    Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013
Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange mans seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.
Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to draw attention in a tiny southern town.
The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesnt know what - and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.
Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

    BRAVO!
    What a story---What a performance!
This is one of the best audiobooks I've listen to. It's abridged, but so well edited one would never know there was a longer version. I think I prefer the abridged version because the Mafia assassination the 16 year old girl witnessed and other scenes of violence are no-doubt more detailed in the unabridged version. Julia Whelan's performance draws you into the story... it's as if you can see the scenes and feel the fear of the witness.
"The Witness" has much to recommend it: likable characters, humor, mystery, romance. I don't want to spoil anything; by not knowing what will happen next is part of the books appeal....I listened to it in one night. I was so caught up in Elizabeth/Abigail and Brook's story I didn't want it to end.
    I highly recommend it!
    great book
I really liked this book. a real page turner. couldn't put it down. loved it
    Took a different turn
I wasn't expecting so much of a love story but it still turned out to be a very interesting book. I enjoyed not exactly knowing where the plot was going to go.
    A pleasure to listen
Like the story very much. Love the performance or the reader, her enunciation and inflections as well as her ability to differenciate characters through out the voice tone.
    Good Job Nora.
I struggle to find books worth listening to. Thank you for fixing that. I look forward to adding other titles of hers to my collection.

    Publisher's Summary:
The men who killed Tush Bannon knew he was a nice guy with a nice wife and three nice kids - trying to run a small marina on the Florida coast. They also knew he was in the way of a big land development scheme. Once they killed him, they figured they were on easy street. But Tush Bannon was Travis McGee's friend, and McGee could be one tough adversary when protecting a widow and her kids.

My Favorite Book In My Favorite Series
What did you love best about Pale Gray for Guilt?
McGee is a conflicted but essentially moral man and his rage at what happened to his friend is very nearly palpable. It infuses the book with a tension it wouldn't have if the protagonist had been a disaffected third party investigator.
Another thing is the realness of the plot. As someone quite familiar with criminal activity, I am always struck that the action in this book follows the law of unintended consequences that we often see in street crimes. Other authors (Elmore Leonard and John Sandford come immediately to mind) use the technique in contemporary fiction but MacDonald did it first and does it best.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
When a reader cares about the characters, he cares about what happens to them. MacDonald creates characters so real that each one of them could walk off the page and sit down on the next bar stool. We care, of course, about McGee's knight on a spavined steed but we also care about his friends, particularly Tush Bannon. How could you read the early description of the man and not see a decent guy? What happens to him is tragic...and thus the essence of the plot. We want to see justice.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene where McGee cons a description of what happened to his friend Tush out of an unwitting phone repairman.
I have also always been moved by McGee's simplified visualization of life and death. I don't want to spoil it for the uninitiated but, suffice to say, I read it the first time when I was about 12 and it's stuck with me for nearly fifty years.
    It Still Works
Another excellent McGee mystery that still works even though it was written in 1968. Once again there is a old friend in trouble. To quote Travis "Tush Bannon was the best friend I ever had." This despite the fact that that he is never so much as mentioned in the first eight books in the series. Bannon; his wife and three children are living on the water in their motel attached to his marina. It's a nice little business but it's unfortunately in the way of a large piece of property that both local and statewide big shots want to get their hands on. So using the power of local government they drive him into bankruptcy; then he is killed. Though they attempt to make it look like a suicide McGee has the body sent to a lab where he has another friend who hasn't appeared in any of the other McGee novels. It's not a suicide; it's murder.
So McGee and Meyer swing into action to con every penny possible out of the local big shot (Preston LaFrance) and the state, even national big shot (Gary Santo.) They are aided if only slightly by McGee's love interest in this book Puss Killian. (An obvious ode to Pussy Galore from the Bond film Goldfinger) She is a more serious girlfriend than most of the McGee paramours and is thus marked for death.

    A swampy problem for McGee
Would you consider the audio edition of The Long Lavender Look to be better than the print version?
It is a hard task to be "better" than Macdonald's original print, but having a skilled reader (the original McGavin or now performed by Robert Petkoff) accomplishes the objective.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Long Lavender Look?
As with many of the Travis McGee series, the opening sequence of events where McGee narrowly misses running over the girl, then is shot at. To say the writing is skillful would be insulting to how good it is.
Have you listened to any of Robert Petkoffs other performances before? How does this one compare?
I recently listened to the entire Travis McGee series as read by Petkoff, and to my mind, he does the occasionally grouch McGee in fine fashion, and captures the caring Meyer perfectly. Great performance.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Nearly all of the McGee novels cause introspective thought on the societal commentary contained in them, even now, 30 or 40-odd years later.
    Good story and Narration
Robert Petkoff is a great story teller, and this one is written well. Most of the John D. Macdonald books are top notch. I enjoyed it.
I thought Miss Agnes was a goner for sure!
This one starts off with a bang, and hardly slows down. Poor Miss Agnes suffers horribly, but not as much as the ladies who come into the life of Travis McGee. A woman sleeping with Travis seems to have the same life expectancy as a guy wearing a red shirt in an opening episode of Star Trek! And dear Meyer is fast becoming more of a partner than a friend. A great book!
    Robert Petkoff is Travis McGee
This story had many twists and some were really a surprise for me, but I really kept coming back because Trav is a sarcastic joker. He's funny but he does bed most women in these books. Aside from the dollar values given in the book, I was amazed by how similar his 'time' compares to current day.
    Not my favorite
I'm a fan of this series, but I suggest it isn't judged by this particular book. It's just that this particular novel just didn't work for me. I think it was because it was quite fragmented, lots of extraneous conversations and explanations -- too much information about people who weren't particularly interesting. But, as is always the case, Travis McGee is deeply compassionate (fight it though he might he is a bit of a Robin Hood and a soft touch for a tragic lady) and resourceful and has the freedom and danger of working parallel to the law.
Ah well, perhaps there wasn't enough about his houseboat home -- I really enjoy that setting!
As always, Petkoff reads with commitment and understanding.

Please the morose music is annoying. This was okay but a stretch. The others in this series were better. I do like the reader. I will move forward to the next in the series, last chance!
    Very entertaining!
Another good book in the Peter Decker / Rina Lazarus series. This one had more humor and not as gruesome as other books in the series.
Great in spite of being over 20 years old!
I normally don't like books this old, but once I got past wanting them to pick up a cell phone, I really enjoyed it! LOL
    Such a Disappointment
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No - it was truly awful. I have started the series and really enjoyed the other books, this one was nothing like the others.
Would you ever listen to anything by Faye Kellerman again?
    Yes
Which character as performed by Mitchell Greenberg was your favorite?
    Decker and Lazarus.
Could you see False Prophet being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This book was such an awful and stupid plot line. I agree with others that the ending was a disappointment. I really hated the characters - predictable and boring people. Just not up to par with the other books.

    Needs work
This was an okay read. The characters were likable and the story believable. I was a bit unsatisfied with the ending and a plot twist that was never truly developed. All in all, it was an ok book. The narrator gets one star because of the annoying noises that I heard throughout the book. I'll give the second book a try. Hopefully there will be a new narrator.
    Great story, terrible performance
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Loved the story, but the poor performance by the speaker and the poor audio quality made listening very distracting.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Interesting plot line; I liked the twists.
Would you be willing to try another one of Lynda Evans???s performances?
    No
Do you think Deadly Gamble needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes - with a better audio engineer and better speaker.
good story but long and drawn-out
good story long and drawn-out great detail the story was told well cat me wondering
    poor narration and recording
Prepare to hear pages flip, voice echo and surrounding studio sounds during the reading. This is the first narration I've heard from this studio and I am not impressed. The sounds prevent the listener from losing themselves in the story.
    Deadly Narration
The plot line of this book was decent, but hard to follow in places. The characters were likeable and believable, though somewhat flat. Charlie seemed to do the same thing every night. There wasn't really anything unique about her. I feel like a hobby or relationship could've added some depth. The characters' reactions to the deaths in the story were entirely unrealistic--nobody was upset in the least. I do not anticipate buying the next one in the series.
However, the narration was terrible. It did not feel like a performance at all! There was absolutely no voice differentiation for different characters, so I would often get confused about who was talking. Charlie is supposed to be a relatively young woman, but the voice sounded much older. I couldn't tell when it was supposed to be a man talking versus a woman or a child.
There were several times when it seemed like the narrator lost her place or needed to turn a page (unnatural pauses).
There was also background noise, like pages turning or people talking in the distance. A couple of times, I actually paused it and looked around to see who was talking.

    Publisher's Summary:
The picturesque Cotwsold village of Winter Parva has decided to warm the post-Christmas season by roasting a pig in the town square. Agatha, always one for a good roasting, organizes an outing to enjoy the merriment. But as the rotary spit is placed over a bed of fiery charcoals and the pig is carried toward its final resting place, Agatha realizes that things are not as they seem...
"Stop!" she screams suddenly. The "pig," in fact, is Gary Beech, a policeman not exactly beloved by the good people of the village. Although Agatha has every intention of leaving matters to the police, everything changes when Gary's ex-wife hires Agatha's detective agency to investigate - and then is murdered too. With that provocation, how could any sleuth as vain and competitive (and secretly insecure) as Agatha do anything other than solve the case herself?
    Members Reviews:
    Penlope Keith is perfect !
Agatha is a breath of fresh air, and Penelope Keith knows her inside and out. The whole Raisen series is a British sit com in written form, and from "Good Neighbors" to "Agatha Raisen", no one portrays a cranky, bitchy, opinionated, reckless goodhearted. British upper class busy-body better than Keith. This is strong hot tea with lemon, thank you, not with warm milk and sugar. The plots are roughly Brit-Sit, too -- who needs to believe them? In the diet of Brit Myst readers, P.D. James may be the hearty main course, but don't forget some Beaton for dessert.
    Beaton always delivers
Agatha Raisin is definitely human. She can be petty, crabby, selfish - in other words, just like the rest of us. She is not a superhero in any sense of the word. Beaton writes with wry humor and spins an engaging yarn. I've read thousands of mysteries and thrillers, and I must admit, this story has a unique way of disposing of a body. If you enjoy British humor, you'll enjoy this one.
    A fun little read!
What did you like best about this story?
This story was fun and entertaining
Have you listened to any of Penelope Keiths other performances before? How does this one compare?
    no
    Any additional comments?
Agatha raisin is certainly an interesting character. The book dragged at times but overall it was a good read. But I don't know that I've run out and read it again
    Fun and outragous
This is the kind of light reading that relaxes me with a chuckle or two added into the mix.
    Who wrote this book?
How and when did Simon's parents rise from the dead. If the writer read Busy Body they would have known Simon's parents were killed in an accident. Now in As the Pig Turns they show up at his wedding. The story was a good one if you hadn't read Busy Body.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Celebrated crime master and two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke returns with a gorgeously crafted, brutally resonant chronicle of violence along the Texas-Mexico border.
Sheriff Hackberry Holland patrols a small Southwest Texas border town, meting out punishment and delivering justice in his small square of this magnificent but lawless land. When an alcoholic ex-boxer named Danny Boy Lorca begs to be locked up after witnessing a man tortured to death by a group of bandits, Hack and his deputy, Pam Tibbs, slowly extract the Indian mans gruesome tale. It becomes clear that the desert contains a multitude of criminals, including serial murderer Preacher Jack Collins (whom The New York Times called one of Burkes most inspired villains).
Hollands investigation leads him to Anton Ling, a mysterious Chinese woman whose steely demeanor and aristocratic beauty compel Hackberry to return to her home again and again as the investigation unfolds.
James Lee Burke is at his engrossing and atmospheric best in this, his 13th novel, as Hackberry plumbs the depths of mans inhumanity to man - from killers-for-hire, to the U.S. government, to the misguided souls in search of a better life across the border.
    Critic Reviews:
[O]utstanding.... The richness of Burke's characters, always one of his strengths, reaches new heights.... The intricately plotted narrative takes numerous unexpected turns, and Burke handles his trademark themes of social justice and corruption with his usual subtlety. (Publishers Weekly)
As Burke steers the elaborately structured narrative toward its violent conclusion, we are afforded looks inside the tortured psyches of his various combatants, finding there the most unlikely of connections between the players. This is one of Burkes biggest novels, in terms of narrative design, thematic richness, and character interplay, and he rises to the occasion superbly, a stand-up guy at the keyboard, as always... Though he is best known for his Dave Robicheaux series, the broader canvas of this Hackberry Holland adventure makes a fittingly grand stage on which to play out such a landmark event in American publishing. (Bill Ott, Booklist)
The dialogue scenes, along with the action sequences, the South Texas landscape and the indelibly conflicted characters make you want to give Burke a medal. (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    Outstanding story with remarkable delivery.
I find Burke to be one of the best novelists in the suspense genre. His characters are flawed, believable and wonderful to discover.
This book is one of a series about a sheriff of a small town on the Texas/Mexico border with a dark past, Hackberry Holland, but it is not necessary to read any of them in order.
Will Patton is a remarkable actor and the best reader I have encountered. He brings the characters to life and makes Burke's unique and eloquent prose a haven of pleasure.
Shoot Out at the More-Than-OK Corral
Most of the reviews I've read thus far, in spite of the disparity they contain, have valid points. I'll offer what I think is probably most helpful to someone considering this book: Burke is flat out a magnificent writer, his command of language, his artistic prose, his adeptness at continuity, and his strong characters.

Audible needs to allow half stars, for books like this
Ok, overall, a good book. I bought the next in series. Great performance. My biggest complaint is the preachiness & "moralizing", although not in the way you will assume without reading the whole book. Not a western preachiness/moral majority/family values type of dogma. More of the opposite. But the problem is there is still hypocrisy in the author's moralizing. and it sometimes got in the way of my enjoyment of the book. I prefer Timothy Halinan's more honest perspectives on the good and negative of both cultures. Still, I am definitely going to stick with the series if the following books are as interesting!
as Twisted as a hangman's knot
Perfect combination of mystery and Asian philosophy. My first read by this author, and I might not choose to do another for awhile for fear of it being repetitious, but this was a delightful surprise.
    Buddha as a modern man
Would you listen to Bangkok 8 again? Why?
yes, there were a lot of details I probably missed the first time around because I was focused on the plot line.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Our hero, because he was conflicted. We got to see his thought process as a buddhist apprentice .
What about Paul Boehmers performance did you like?
Good. He added color to the story that was good At some times , though, it was hard to distinguish between characters, like between our hero and his boss.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
it became clear , how intricate the web of corruption can get. Even "honest " people get caught up in it
    Tales from Thamkrabok?
This book is a great story but it's not so much a work of fiction. Having lived in BKK for many years. This story is all to true and repeats itself regularly. I left BKK in 2555 (2012) and this is still very much the way of the kingdom, the land of fake smiles and deep feeling Jai Dee locals doing what they must.

This is called book 9 in the series, but it is mostly a stand alone novel. It is also mostly Rizzoli and very little Isles.
I started reading TG because of the weirdness she often puts in her books. A good amount of inventiveness can make up for lack of writing skill. This book had less creativeness, but yet the writing has not improved. I liked the story, but had trouble getting into it.I did not feel empathy for the characters. If you are a TG fan then it is worth your credit, if you have not read TG, then start with The Surgeon, probably her best. I also liked Life Support, Gravity, The Apprentice and Ice Cold.
Gerritsen and Eby must be good buddies, cause I can't figure out why Tess is sabotaging her books by letting Eby kill them. Ice Cold was a good book, but Eby read it like it was her first book ever. This book was not near as bad, less weirdness to her voice, also less inflection, less emotion, less everything. I will keep buying and listening to books by Gerritsen, but she is losing possible new fans by letting Eby learn how to read on her books. Tess you are a star now, so do like Stephen King and demand only the best readers.
    somewhat disappointing
I have read all Rizzoli and Isles books long before the TV series was made. I liked the storyline, even though it was really easy to figure out who the murderer was. What I didn't like was the missing interaction between Rizzoli and Isles and even between Rizzoli and the rest of the family, which are only mentioned in passing. The main reason I read Tess Gerritsens Books is because of the interaction of the characters and the full cast of friends family and rivals to follow. Isles storyline I think is only there to prepare for the next book. I really hope that in the next book TG will go back to a real Rizzoli and Isles story
    Waste of time and talent
I am disappointed with this book, I have read all the Isle's and Rizzoli books, and loved them. This one, I only finished because I had hope that it would improve.
While I didn't mind the narrator on the last book, I didn't like her in this one. If you can't make an accent, don't do it, and whats up with the nasal sounds?
The plot I had mostly figured out beforehand, long before, and had I know it would circle so much around parenthood, I would have skipped it.

Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont investigates a dark and deadly conspiracy that reaches deep into the halls of state government in this latest thriller from New York Times best-selling author J. A. Jance.
At first glance, the video appears to be showing a childish game: a teenage girl with dark wavy hair smiles for the camera, a blue scarf tied around her neck. All of a sudden things turn murderous, and the girl ends up dead. Its as bad as a snuff film can get, and whats worse, the clip has been discovered on a phone that belongs to the grandson of Washington States governor. However, the boy, who has a troubled background, swears that hes never seen the victim before.
Fortunately, the governor is able to turn to an old friend, J. P. Beaumont, for help. The Seattle private investigator has witnessed many horrific acts over the years, but this one ranks near the top. Even more shocking is that the crimes multiple perpetrators could be minors. Along with Mel Soames, his partner in life as well as on the job, Beaumont soon discovers that what initially appears to be a childish prank gone wrong has much deeper implications, reaching into the halls of state government itself. But Mel and Beau must follow this path of corruption to its very end, before more innocent young lives are lost.

    Kept me guessing ...
Personally, I found this book to be very enjoyable -- if you like murder mysteries, which I do, then I think you will too. I had never listened to the J.P. Beaumont Series of books before and if they are all this entertaining, then I know I've got 19 others I can enjoy -- since this is Book 20, apparently. I'm always amazed by the different reviews for a book -- I'm reading them and thinking, hey, this is right up my alley and then BOOM somebody invariably (or several somebodies) will write a really bad review. I guess that's just another example of how we are all different. I would recommend this book. I like it.
    Good mystery thriller
Engaging, engrossing, suspenseful until the end. Well narrated. Great book
Lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing
    Prolific and Terrific Writing!
Audible, you suggested JA Jance books and my friend and I really got hooked on them! The Beaumont ones are great because J.A. Horne must be Beaumont in real life! I like the books about Beaumont much better than Jance's books ( "ala Tony Hillerman, of Indian lore) because I loved Hillerman, and think Jance's works are not as good when in shadows of another outstanding author. Thanks for your introduction to her!
    Good story and good performance
This is a good story, just a little wordy in places. Truly fun to listen to.
    Not the same JP
If you could sum up Betrayal of Trust in three words, what would they be?
The story was good, however, once you get used to Gene Engene narrating it is difficult to enjoy someone else who doesn't sound like the real JP.
