    Wahhh--Hoooo!!! The real thing. . .
I had not read anything by Tony Daniel previously -- and have been unhappy with the last three books I've read. Too simple, or derivative. I keep looking for something like Dan Simmons' Hyperion series or Peter Hamilton's Commonweath/Void books. Something with a little "there" there. I also enjoy darker pieces like Alastair Renolds (Revelation Space) or Charles Stross' post-moderns (Halting State / Rule 34). I also like some good old fashioned military sci-fi like John Campbell's Lost Fleet, John Ringo's Aldenata Series (or his new Gate series).
This book was a breath of fresh air -- complex players, clever plotting, a hard science edge. It is a very good start to what I hope will develop into a great series. It is Military Sci-Fi (somewhere between Ringo and Campbell) but with a little complexity and darkness mixed in.
When I first started it, I thought: "Ok, bad aliens bomb earth. . ." But the characterization, clever (and well fleshed-out) aliens, and smart plot make this a cut well above the average. There is definately military sci-fi here -- and it is quick and intelligent. But there is also a well-laid foundation for broader thinking and deeper plots to come.
The conclusion builds well, and by the time you get there -- you are fully engaged in the action. This was a pleasure, and I hope that there will be more to come.
Hunt for Red October in space
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would. Tony Daniel is a great writer, even if the story is not incredibly original.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the portrayal of the alien commander.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No; it was a little militaristic for my tastes.

"[P]age-turning thrills aplenty.... Boyczuk borrows from sources as diverse as Tolkien, Star Wars, and Alan Moore, and integrates the miscellany admirably into a fast-paced plot." (Publishers Weekly)

Science Fiction That Packs a Punch
This book is great on so many levels. Good solid Science Fiction, great characters, complicated but interesting relationships, solid plot twists and an excellent narrator.
Although the books stands up well as an entertaining single read, I am hoping a sequel is in the works.
Fun, and looking forward to the author's work...
I'll keep this simple, and give away no storyline points. This is a very good read. Believable, well-planned, moved along briskly, and keeps your attention. It takes armageddon to another level - Revenge! Enjoy this listen for what it is - A sweeping story with no moral lessons. It will keep you listening, and wanting more. Robert, I'm looking forward to what's next - You've set your bar high.
    More please
A good story well written and narrated.
It is listed as a series but it is the only one in the series, I am hoping for more of the same.
It is often a little difficult to get ones mind around the time and distance factors, Yes, but the plot was good and surprising, Yes.
    Well worth a listen.
    Big Universe to Fill
There are no zombies. These days zombie fiction seems pretty prevalent, and I was reticent to start this novel when "plague" and "no trace of human life" were used in the publisher's summary. I was glad to see the author wasn't trying to capitalize on this quickly fading fad.
The narrator Nick Sullivan did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and I have nothing but praise for his performance. I wish I could say the same of the plot he had to work with.
I'll warn you now, Robert Boyczuk creates some great characters and then proceeds to make you hate them. One dimensional is an understatement. The second half of the book is purely dedicated to cleaning up the mess he created in the first half. Setting that aside the universe the characters live in is epic, I mean huge, and Boyczuk makes it truly interesting. The novel ends a little abruptly with the fate of some of the characters completely unknown, leaving the potential for more books. Although I think it may be best he just leaves these characters behind and starts anew else where in their universe.
    Disappointing
The story idea was good and there are some good characters but the actions of some of the characters are contrived. Whenever the author wants a twist in the story, two of the characters simply "give up".

    Very Enjoyable Sci-Fi Adventure/Satire!
Sixteen-year-old space commander Sal is once again leading his minions into glorious battle when he encounters Princess Hatari, who seeks his help in gaining her rightful planetary throne! This is a nice sci-fi adventure/satire told with wit and verve, which can be appreciated as a rollicking space yarn, a humor piece or both. There are amusing allusions to several sci-fi classics, including Star Wars and Enders Game. Well paced and enjoyable throughout, the narrator does this short work justice. Recommended.
Laughably bad - teenage fan fiction
What disappointed you about Alien StarSwarm?
I read a lot of Robert Sheckley when I was younger and always remembered enjoying his sense of humor. So I was actually excited to hear this. Sadly, it reads like it was written by a teenager in the '50's. Remember when girls were kind of icky. Yeah. The robot sounds like he should be smoking a cigar.
What could Robert Sheckley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not sure. It's largely a pretty lame story that I don't think would even get printed today.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Waterss performances?
    Uh, no.
    Ironic humor
What did you like best about Alien StarSwarm? What did you like least?
    Clever and silly.
Would you recommend Alien StarSwarm to your friends? Why or why not?
Other Sheckly stories are have more hard SF.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Waters???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Reader has good voices for story telling.

From the depths of Space a new foe rises to do battle with mankind: the British Space Empire is threatened by the lemming-people of Yull, ruthless enemies who attack without mercy, fear or any concept of self preservation. At the call of their war god, the Yull have turned on the Empire, hell bent on conquest and destruction in their rush towards the cliffs of destiny.
    Critic Reviews:
"Toby Frost managed to write not only a laugh-out-loud space romp, but one that holds up well enough if you take all the humour away and start looking at the back bone of the stories - the world he has created. It just works so well and because of the fun I had with the first two novels Wrath of the Lemming Men was pretty much my most anticipated book of the year and the sooner I could get it through the letterbox the better. Not only did it meet my expectations, but once again Toby is expanding more and more from the base he set up in Space Captain Smith." (Walker of Worlds)

the funniest audiobook in my collection
What made the experience of listening to Wrath of the Lemming-Men the most enjoyable?
The whole book is an action packed comedy with truly likeable characters. Every line spoken by a Lemming Man is priceless. Out of the 1270 or so auiobooks I bought I have listened to this book and this series more than any other. I wear a carefree smile when I listen to this book. It is a joy to listen to and I crack up over the same lines. This book is permanently on my MP3 player and will never be deleted. The narrator hits the voices perfectly.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Wrath of the Lemming-Men?
The prologue where noble born Colonel Vock leads his suicidal "tidalwave of fur" against the legendary warrior and renowned accountant Eggshad Nine Swords, father of Soruck the Slayer, at the battle of the Tam Bridge. HOP HOP! Just typing these words gives me goosebumps!
What about Clive Catteralls performance did you like?
He does all the voices perfectly and in a unassuming manner. Great job.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laugh every time I listen to this book. And I have listened to it at least 20 times. No joke.
    Any additional comments?
Buy this audiobook! You will be entertained from start to finish.
    Amazing!
Amazing fantasy sci/fi storyline, interesting characters and filled with witty, clever humor to make you continuously laugh out loud. If you liked hitchikers guide or pretty much any sci-fi/fantasy you will love these books.
    Save yourself.....don't do it.......
This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
This book sounds like what would happen if Monty Python ever wrote a skit that made fun of a science fiction story. Clive Catterall reads his lines with all the delivery you could ever ask from Monty Python. Unfortunately, I didn???t make it past the second chapter.
    Funny and intelligent space romp!
Toby Frost's characters, in this 3rd in the series, are still as funny as ever. Juxtaposition of Space Opera and British Empire memes leads to much silliness. Clive Catterall's reading is so perfectly low-key, that the irony and silliness kind of sneak up on you.
I have listened to this one 3 times already, since I purchased it, and will listen many more times.

    Awsome listen and read :)
Would you listen to After America again? Why?
All aspects of the story was a total draw in. The main people you could love and care about and the the baddies were very nasty and you love it when they get justice served on them.
All of John's books are as enjoyable as this one i.e. Axis of Time Trilogy, After America and the list goes on Very Happy with this book :D
Who was your favorite character and why?
Pretty much all the good guys especially. The Villains you can really dislike.
What about Kevin Foleys performance did you like?
Excellent reading and he really gets into the story with all its shades.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole book moved me in so many emotions.
    Any additional comments?
A Great listen and read :)
    Good sequal
A long sequal like the first but some great characters. overall another brilliant book by Birmingham, however the previous narrator was more convincing.
    GREAT STORY
Would you listen to After America again? Why?
Yes I would...in a year or so....its an easy and entertaining listen
What other book might you compare After America to, and why?
Collapse, very simllar stories...the end of a powerfull America, a looming threat of Johnny Foreigner on there doorstep!
What about Kevin Foleys performance did you like?
Coolio...even the womens voices werent to bad, Usually male readers just sound really camp when they do this. Which amuses me.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Nooo....its not that kind of book
    Any additional comments?
Bourne Identity meets The day after tomorrow is the best description for this jolly little jaunt.
    Interesting
Not a bad story but need to pay attention to keep up with the political theory line
I feel that a lot of his other books are much better
A good book otherwise although seems the end could do with a more polished finish and a follow up would be good

    Critic Reviews:
a surprisingly balanced combination of political intrigue (subversive manipulations and deceptions from mysterious characters), fast action (shootouts, crash landings, and rescue attempts) and meticulous world building (alien cultures, shared minds, forbidden technologies, character and race histories, etc.).[An] ultimately worthy space opera that never fails to involve the reader. Members Reviews:
    Great Original Sci-Fi
Andrew Swann has put together a great story with great characters that is VERY reminiscent of the table top miniatures game Infinity while at the same time being very much its own, unique story. The narration by Kevin Pariseau is also excellent . . . although someone should tell him not to mimic static noise . . . especially at serious moments of dramatic tension . . . I feel I cannot maintain my willing suspension of disbelief in the face of the same sound I used to make when playing Star Wars in the back yard as a child :)
    Not his earlier moreau work
    Any additional comments?
Loved Swann's earlier moreau trilogy / quartet. They all very much had the hard-boiled detective, noir feel to them.
This is a foray into a more conventional type of science fiction, and lacks the pared down and direct plotting of his earlier work. Felt sprawling and unfocused to me, and the characters were less engaging. I didn't see Swann's earlier works on audible. Do yourself a favor and get them in paperback, or on a kindle.

    At Empires Edge
Having read the majority of this author's books I was surprised to read one person's review as "dull and predictable". I found the book neither. It was as enjoyable as his 'legion of the damned' series and his 'earth rise' series. If you are already a dietz fan you will not be dissappointed.
Standard Sci Fi with a predictable story
The story is standard sci fi. Futuristic cop chasing shapeshifter criminal with murder conspiracy, politics, etc. Not that most people mind that.
I couldn't give it below 4 stars for despite the predictable plot, as it is reasonably written and is well paced. Of course, I like sci fi and it had all the sci fi elements, with winged villains and what not.
It will suit people who love science fiction action stories and don't mind a slightly predictable plot.
    Military Sci Fi
If you like action/adventure with your Sci Fi, then this is for you. A few cliches in the main character, but very listenable. Narration is good.
Good Story -Tight Plot- Excellent Narration
Not really what I expected. But it was a pleasure to listen to this story. Reminiscent of the western genre in it's simplicity (hero chasing the outlaw).
Complex characters...such a the blood thirsty monster - with a heart.
    Great book
Zak Cato is a xeno-cop. Great primes and great story. Very exciting and well written. Great story Bill.
