Story could be OK but for the reader
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The story seamed to be good, it was just the reader. she is HORRIBLE
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
plot line was good, reader was horrible
How could the performance have been better?
The reader was like listening to a female version of Garfield the cat who had just smoked a pound of weed. i'm not kidding. excruciatingly S-L-O-W and ill-timed. she read almost all the characters in a really brain baked way that made them sound like idiots. it was VERY difficult to tell who was talking in a character dialog. because she used the same voice and often didn't break between.
i could not get through the book.
    Any additional comments?
please god don't hire that person again.
i really think with a decent reader the book might have been alright.
    but she ruined it.
    Forgive the Narrator-Great Story Anyhow
Where does The Lost Enforcer rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Were it not for the Narrator, it would rank near the top. The story is well devloped, complex and easily followed, however the Narrators inept handling of pronunciation and accent almost made me stop.

    Publisher's Summary:
The year is 2085, and the world dives blindly into capitalistic hysteria while dreaming of a technologic singularity. India and China now dominate as economic leaders, and people have become over-reliant on the cold logic of artificial intelligence. Who can save the world from such self-inflicted decay?
Here we find Sumeet, the cream of Indian education, and a top notch investment banker. But he's unhappy with the good life laid before him, and soon meets Shinzou Friemann, a mysterious consultant who offers solace from the fetters of unbridled capitalism. But Shinzou is not all that he seems, and Sumeet is unwittingly drawn into the hunt for an unusual terrorist group - one where the lines between terrorist, freedom fighter, hero, and madman all break down.... Welcome to the Freedom Club.
Both men explore a future world overrun by consumerism, technology, and discontent, where being human isn't good enough as God-like Sentient Beings threaten the very meaning of life.
Written in a way that echoes John Brunner's Stand on Zanzibar, Freedom Club is frighteningly prescient, and intensely powerful.
    Members Reviews:
Intricate plot, cool characters; just needs ladies
Set in 2085, the world is technology dependent. More and more, humans have come to rely on their Sentients to run things, everything from large financial structures to household schedules. Sumeet, who was top of his class, and excellent in his chosen field, eventually finds himself not satisfied. Shinzou offers up his advice and a possible job, both of which give Sumeet pause. The Freedom Club pushes for simpler, less tech-infused lives, but how does one explain that to a Sentient?
This book offered up a lot of food for thought. The plot was intricate and the cast interesting. Also, if one wanted to do some inferring, there was a deeper message about dependence on technology. The story starts off with a little historical flashback to 1600s Japan and the last remaining Christians. This flashback is explained later in the book. In fact, these little historical flashbacks happen regularly throughout the book, showing various members of the Freedom Club throughout history.
The tale then launches into a mystery crime story with a virus taking down payment systems. Phoenix is the first city hit and Hugo is the cop assigned to look into it. He suspects an anti-tech group might be behind it, but he will have a hard time proving it. He hesitantly teams up with Shinzou for info swapping. This opening is what hooked me on the story I like a good SF crime story. Little did I know things would get so intricate.
So theres a bunch of corporate maneuvering with international companies (such as Takahana Biovores and Chando company), which wasnt nearly as interesting as what Hugo the Cop was doing, but it set a stage for me to get to know several other characters, including a few Sentients. The Sentients, like Henry who is Shinzous friend, are a type of AI. They interact with the physical world via avatars that allow them to walk and talk. In fact, if someone isnt paying close attention, they can appear quite human in their mannerisms. Shiro is another Sentient who plays a pivotal role in the story. His personality is quite different from Henrys. Rather late in the tale, we learn how the AIs are made and let me just say, wow! I wasnt expecting that!
Theres other cool tech on display in this thinking SF story as well.

    Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:
AD 2600.

    More complex than Book One!
It's very difficult to review this book without spoilers, as it's he middle book of a trilogy. I will have to content myself with saying that the unusual events of the first book are more fully explained in this volume, but the more we find out about the narrator and this weird dystopian landscape, the more questions we have... Like the first book of the trilogy, this is gripping and inventive, and I urge you to listen to it - but not before you listen to the first volume!

    A down-and-out bluesman.
    A rough-and-tumble-biker.
    A series of supernatural murders.
Roy Porter lives on the streets of Tulsa, his music all but forgotten. When his friends start dying in horrible ways, Roy realizes he's seen the pattern of death before. The cops are searching for a regular killer, but Roy knows there's more going on and if he doesn't act, he might be next of the death list.
He teams up with Jim Hartford, a tough biker with a haunted past, to hunt down the killer. But how can this unlikely pair hope to face up to a killer with powers born from the depths of evil? They're on a train bound for hell and it's a one-way trip.
    Members Reviews:
Now I have a small scorpion phobia.
Roy Porter has to go with the cops to the Tulsa morgue to identify another body. This time it is Willy, another homeless man that Roy knew. The cops have their ideas about who is killing the homeless but Roy has seen this pattern before. He knows that theres something supernatural to it. With trepidation, he goes to Jim Hartfords to ask for his help. But Jim isnt interested, having his own demons to fight off with a bottle of booze.
This story has a noir feel to it. Its part mystery, part urban fantasy. It was interesting and engaging. Loner biker Jim has a lot of secrets and we never learn what they all are. However, we do know he defeated whatever this is in the past and theres hints from the beginning that it cost him dearly. Roy is the true hero of the tale mostly because he has to step up and own his power and become that hero instead of holding himself back. There were plenty of references to blues music icons that I didnt get, but thats OK. Roy used to be a musician himself and I can appreciate the music icons through him.
Theres this mysterious place called Safe Haven thats introduced early on and then revisited later. The folks that live there have the ability to fight this evil, but they would have to give up their hard won sanctuary to do so. Obviously, they are very hesitant to do so. I liked this aspect to the story because it lent weight to Jims instance that his previous win against this evil cost him too much. But I can also see that Roy doesnt get why these folks, Jim included, are not initially willing to assist.
The evil itself comes in the form of a man. Its complex and the killings are pretty gruesome. The bodies look like they have been stung or bitten or gnawed upon, each body being a little bit different. As Roy and eventually Jim dig into this mystery, Roy learns exactly why the bodies end up the way they do. Its eerie and spooky. Let me just say that I now have a minor scorpion phobia due to this book!
Sadly, all of the ladies are secondary or tertiary characters. Trent, the Tulsa detective, is the most interesting. The Reverend who tries to help the homeless has several lines, but shes not an important minor character like Trent. Theres references to Jims old girlfriend Trisha and then theres Susan in Safe Haven. Out of all of them, I would have liked to see more of Trent and her detective skills.
All told, the story kept me engaged throughout. I would have liked more about Jim and of course I hope for a sequel to find out what Roy does after this. I wouldnt mind a prequel showing Jims first encounter with this particular evil.
The Narration: J. Rodney Turner had a great voice for Roy and a good one for Jim.

    Interesting. An entertaining premise.
This story most definitely goes into some odd directions. If I am given absolute power over everything, literally, I'm sure I would get more creative and sadly, I must be honest with myself, I would surely be more greedy than our protagonist. That said, some of the protagonists choices had me scratching my head and others had me banging my head against the pillow when reading at bedtime but overall out was an entertaining story. A perfect hero wouldn't make for a very good story, would he?
I was pulled in almost from the start and honestly the book did drag on a little through the halfway mark but finally picked up near the end. I had envisioned a completely different resolution, if you will, but the story came together rather well at the end. It was decent entertainment.

Within a few decades, solar technology will evolve to the point where power is endless - unless someone wants to stop the flow - which someone does. And the only men who can stop these high-tech terrorists are on horseback. In the near future, the New Las Vegas Sunfield will be one of many enormous solar farms to supply energy to the United States. At more than fifty miles long and two miles wide, the Sunfield generates an electromagnetic field so volatile that ordinary machinery and even the simplest electronic devices must be kept miles away from it. Thus, the only men who can guard the most technologically advanced power station on earth do so on horseback. They are the Outriders.Though the power supplied by the Sunfield is widespread, access to that power comes with total deference to the iron-fisted will of New Las Vegass ruthless mayor, Franklin Dreg. Crisis erupts when Dregs quietly competent secretary, Timothy Hale, discovers someone has been stealing energysiphoning it out of the New Las Vegas grid under cover of darkness. As the Outriders investigate, the scale of the thievery becomes clear: these arent the ordinary energy leeches, people who steal a few watts here or there. These are high-tech terrorists (or revolutionaries) engaged in a mysterious and dangerous enterprise and poised to bring down the entire energy grid, along with the millions of people it supports. The pressure mounts and fractures appear within both the political leadership of New Las Vegas and in the tight-knit community of Outriders. With a potential crisis looming, the mysterious goal of the Drainers finally comes into focus. Only then do the Outriders realize how dangerous the situation really is.
    Members Reviews:
In the Near Future, Solar Energy Fields Will Be Protected byâ Gun-Wielding Cowboys?
Imagine a future metropolis relying solely on solar power and managed by a megalomaniac. Steven John, in his latest novel Outrider, constructs New Las Vegas as one of a modern urban complex that has transcended the energy crisis of the present thanks to superlative technology harnessing the abundant energy from the sun. A typical day for the cowboy Outriders, who guard the electromagnetic solar fields, is mostly tranquil, except for the occasional annoyance caused by power thieves known as leeches. Ordinarily, leeches steal only a small amount of energy. Yet soon itâs apparent that there have been major energy drains daily â more than any leech could manage, and clearly organized on a much larger scale. When thereâs only one source of energy supplying millions of people with power, this is a serious problem.
From the beginning, the reader is thrust into the lives of the Outriders, predominately a man known only as Scofield. Scofield loves solitude above all else, save for the company of his beloved horse, Reese. Patrolling the solar fields grants him this solitary pleasure; being just about the best at his job grants him some quiet pride. However, the growing power crisis will soon force Scofield to make a difficult choice between what he has known his whole life to be trueâ and what he has just discovered.
Steven Johnâs writing plunges the reader into the story, deepening both oneâs attachment to certain characters and oneâs loathing for others. The book maintains a brisk pace throughout.

Incarnate (A Spellmason Chronicle Book 3)
    Reviewed by Justin
    Book provided by Ace Publishing
Review originally posted at Romancing the Book
The third and final book of the Spellmason Chronicle series, Incarnate left me wanting more. Not in the this-book-isnât-very-good way, but in the when-is-the-next-book-coming kind of way. The best kind of way.
The book follows Alexandra and her posse around Manhattan, chasing gargoyles and dodging wizards. Stanis, the gargoyle, is coping with becoming a leader of people now found trapped in their own bodies of stone, and spends much of the book trying to balance helping out other gargoyles and helping out Alexandra et al. Towards the middle of the novel, we learn that a rival group of gargoyles is forming under a big baddie wizard, and our heroes must team up to fight off the coming onslaught.
While the prior two novels mostly revolved around the Spellmasonry aspect of the magical world (and, to a lesser degree, Alchemy), this novel finally blows open the entire underground magic scene in the Spellmason universe. The author has us meeting numerous wizards and witches, and in one scene I was secretly giddy that witches were actually riding around on broomsticks. There is more gore in this book as well, so if rooms full of blood used for selfish magic make you queasy, this probably isnât a book for you.
The unfortunate downsides, however, hit home a little hard for me. A lot of the conversations between the characters feel unnatural and choppy. This forced me out of the story on numerous occasions, but seemed to happen more the later this book went on. This may, however, tie into the heroine, Alexandra.

    Disoranized
Would you try another book from Glen Cook and/or Daniel Thomas May?
No, While the narration wasn't terrible the story was badly structured, and seemed to try too hard to be mysterious.
Would you ever listen to anything by Glen Cook again?
I'd have to be paid to listen to any of the author's work.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Not sure, the story suffered form too many structure issues.
What character would you cut from A Matter of Time?
    Michael as he seems redundant.
    Any additional comments?
It started off good but soon devolved. I didn't know what was happening. Not knowing w2hat is happening does not make it "mysterious".
