The story was slow in some chapters... but on the whole it kept my interest and I was sorry when it ended. Can't wait to read the next book.

A great story

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

Now he has an implacable enemy in the vengeful shaman, who blames Vatar for the death of his only son. In his isolation, Vatar finds some comfort in daydreams. He knows the strange girl he sometimes imagines is just that--a dream. Shed better be.

Because, if shes real things could get even worse for Vatar. The accepted magic of Vatars plains tribe wouldnt enable him to see or communicate with a girl he doesnt even know--or know where to find. That would be more like the magic passed down in certain, closely-guarded bloodlines among the ruling class of the coastal cities. And thats bad. Very bad.

Unlike their own, Vatars people think the city magic is evil. If the shaman ever found out, it could be the weapon he needs to destroy Vatar. And yet, finding a way to accept the other side of his heritage may be the only way Vatar can ultimately defeat his enemy.

MY TAKE

I read the ebook when it came out and was thrilled to listen to it in audiobook. The narrator, Ian McEuen, did a great job adding accents to people from the various societies. I've read the whole series, and it was great to go back to the beginning again. I'd forgotten how resistant Vatar was to magic at first.

Mansfield's writing is solid, and she tells an imaginative and sometimes gripping story. Interesting cultures. I thought it was fascinating that the nomadic Dardani were actually more culturally sophisticated in some ways than the city people.

I found Vatar to be very likable, and I felt so bad for him. The terrible guilt at not being able to save his friend was bad enough, but to have his friend's father blame Vatar and seek to punish him was terrible.

Vatar's journey includes finding out that the father he's always known was not the one who had fathered him, if that makes sense. Vatar is appalled to find out that the "sperm donor" was a powerful wizard--or that Vatar has half siblings all over the place. The last thing Vatar wants is to have anything to do magic.

It was fun to watch Vatar really grow into a man--often in the school of hard knocks. To be so young and a "divorced" father only added to his challenges.

A reminder Sword and Sorcery is still alive

Overall I thought the book was well written, and a good reminder not to forget about anthologies, and sword and sorcery tales. The stories are in a good order, and very well worded, and paint a vivid scenery. Some stories leave you wanting more, and others end perfectly when they should.

Is tell anyone who is curious to give it a read, well worth it.

Interesting world and characters

The narrator is a little overly dramatic, but you get used to her. Several short stories, some much better than others. You can tell there are different authors. If you like short stories, you won't be disappointed over all. High quality recording.

Finn J.D. John pours his heart into the Conan mythos.

Listening to 35 hours of Conan would be enjoyable but even a Barbarian needs sleep.

Just okay.

Well there is finally some growth for the main character. But these books need to be sold on groups of 2 or 3 together. 1 alone is just not worth the price or credit.

Compelling and enjoyable

I have enjoyed this series thus far and this book is a fine addition to the story with much revealed about some mysterious characters. I recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy!

66 hours with this narrator...

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator is very monotone, and undynamic which is very hard to get past. Then there are the edits. Multiple times, mid-sentence, the editor cut in retakes that were not level matched and possibly another person. That makes for a very poor listening experience.

Couldn't get past the narrator

Sorry just couldn't get past the narrator. Monotone, and the few attempts at a unique voice was just bad. Even the characters sounded like they were reading a book. Thought I was getting a good deal but feel like I just burned a credit.

Few months later im in a dry spell of credits, so I try again. Made it through part 1 of 6, and just bought more credits to get something good instead of finishing. I think the story might be good, but there are so many characters and so few voices. Give this to

Quirky and Surprising

Another zombie apocalypse. I donât feel bad saying that because this one is actually good! I donât know why the authors decided to give such a telling title but it actually works and it works well. This is a story thatâs a little short but itâs so original and completely interesting I loved it.

The antagonist is all around us, that gives this book an edge aside from the fact that the cast experiences some strange events and escapes a few heart-pounding scenes. Speaking of characters, this cast is definitely diverse in background. It makes the story all the more interesting, quirky, and original. Everyone ranges in age, physical appearance, and definitely personality. Plus, it helps that the depth of the story is great and the detail and description is spot on.

I really did like this story but one thing I have to complain about is the point of view. I did like the multiple characters and insight we get from them. I enjoyed the overlapping stories and how the authors crafted them, bringing together essentially two casts to make one cohesive story.

Everything about that was good, I even liked the style of narration because it almost felt like a comic book but it got a little jumpy as we went from character to character so suddenly. I would have liked a smoother transition but overall it is a good story.

The ending is something everyone keeps talking about, it IS good but so simple I felt a little let down. I wonât complain, though, because the entire book had been entertaining and hilarious up until that point but I will say you will either love or hate the ending and the way you feel about the ending will probably effect the way you feel about the overall story. You can love it until the last page but if that lets you down itâs like the whole story is worthless.

Fortunately for this pair of authors, I didnât think it was so bad so I gave it a rating I think was well deserved.

A Fascinating Take On The Zombie Formula

I'm not often one for the zombie apocalypse theme. I think it's overdone and all too formulaic to be of any real entertainment value. I also just don't find that zombies are a compelling type of villain. Vampires are scary because they are smart AND powerful AND eat people. Zombies just kind of eat people most of the time. Occasionally they are stronger or faster than average people, but a lot of the time they are actually slower. What makes a zombie apocalypse entertaining for most (I think) is generally how the world reacts to a global zombie outbreak. What usually does it for me though, is when the story is more of a spoof off of the ordinary zombie plot-line. Zombieland and Warm Bodies are perfect examples of this. I've yet to find any kind of more serious zombie story that resonates with me in quite the same way as these movies did. I do enjoy Plants vs.

Hartness continues to improves as a editor of anthologies. The quality of this collection is solid. The stories vary from historic pieces to contemporary, from horror to superhero. An excellent mix sure to satisfy any reader of genre fiction. The theme is corsets and, as the title indicates, the contributing writers had "Imagination Unbound" starting from this common theme.

Especially good in my opinion are:

Snake Bite - Ms. Massey does paranormal western stories well. Beware the woman left for dead.

The Circus - The main character of this story is creepy cool.

Basque of the Red Death - Revenge may be needed and purpose may be given. But the lingering impact of these actions ...

The Shadow Fatale - Love superhero prose. Think Spiderman's Venom as half-corset and half-human handler.

And I think the best was

Bone of my bone, Flesh of my flesh - The atmosphere in this historic piece is amazing.

In some it is a major feature and in others the corset is a sinister oppressive feature lurking just at the peripheral of the reader's eye.

Roller coaster of emotion.

At some point in this book, I had to stop listening. It was really painful to hear Riyah inner pain and trouble. She was really believable as a character and while I keep hoping and hoping for a happy end I was so afraid it would not come. I am glad this book is over and my heart can rest. I went through the 4 book in a week. Going through the first 2 you wouldn't see this book coming at all. If i was honest, I would have preferred to stop at book 2. I am glad I could see Riyah grow as a character in book 3 and 4. But the fairy tale lover in me find this story too painful. Not something you see in young adult book often.

Best of the series!

If you looking for something similar to court of thorns and roses.... this is the series. This was my favorite book of the four. The character matured and develop so much for very powerful end!

Great 4 books

The 4 nook series is captivating and action packed. although it is a romance novel I still enjoyed it.

Struggled to finish

I was really disappointed with the narrator's monotonous way of delivering the story. I had loved the first book and liked the second and third, but the storyline of this fourth book was unrealistic in my view and at several points felt drawn out.
