Title: A Century of Wealth in America
    Author: Edward N. Wolff

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 22 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-31-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Understanding wealth in the United States - who has it, how they acquired it, and how they preserve it - is crucial to addressing the economic and political challenges facing the nation. But until now we have had little reliable information. Edward Wolff, one of the world's great experts on the economics of wealth, offers an authoritative account of patterns in the accumulation and distribution of wealth since 1900.
A Century of Wealth in America demonstrates that the most remarkable change has been the growth of per capita household wealth, which climbed almost eightfold prior to the 2007 recession. But overlaid on this base rate are worrying trends. The share of personal wealth claimed by the richest one percent almost doubled between the mid-1970s and 2013, concurrent with a steep run-up of debt in the middle class. As the wealth of the average family dropped precipitously - by 44 percent - between 2007 and 2013, with black families hit hardest, the debt-income ratio more than doubled.
The Great Recession also caused a sharp spike in asset poverty, as more and more families barely survived from one paycheck to the next. In short, the United States has changed from being one of the most economically equal of the advanced industrialized countries to being one of the most unequal.

    Critic Reviews:
"Edward Wolff is probably the most knowledgeable scholar of the empirics of household wealth in the US. The book is comprehensive and engaging. The historical perspective is particularly illuminating." (Philippe Van Kerm, Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research and University of Luxembourg)
    Members Reviews:
    Facts Are Stubborn Things.
Professor Ed Wolff has been studying wealth in America far longer than most living economists. He compiles striking, objective evidence about wealth creation that confounds politically motivated polemicists. His contributions to the field are unparalleled.
Yesterday's Wall Street Journal provided a fantastic book review [by Gregory Clark]
Am about half way through. Yesterday's Wall Street Journal provided a fantastic book review [by Gregory Clark]. Briefly, Mr Picketty the French economist [i.e., the anti-American socialist] wrote in his "CAPITAL IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY" that inheritance is the major source of wealth. Mr Edward Wolff in his well-written and superbly researched work, finds that inheritance provides [only] 23% of wealth, 1989 - 2013. Mr Wolff's fine book is armed with facts and figures. The book is best read slowly; and i recommend it.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 14 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-06-17
    Publisher: Hachette Audio UK

    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Based on the series produced for the BBC World Service)
A Financial Times and Bloomberg Business Week Book of the Year)
Who thought up paper money? How did the contraceptive pill change the face of the legal profession? Why was the horse collar as important for human progress as the steam engine? How did the humble spreadsheet turn the world of finance upside down?
The world economy defies comprehension. A continuously changing system of immense complexity, it offers over 10 billion distinct products and services, doubles in size every 15 years, and links almost every one of the planet's seven billion people. It delivers astonishing luxury to hundreds of millions. It also leaves hundreds of millions behind, puts tremendous strains on the ecosystem, and has an alarming habit of stalling. Nobody is in charge of it. Indeed, no individual understands more than a fraction of what's going on.
How can we make sense of this bewildering system on which our lives depend? From the tally stick to Bitcoin, the canal lock to the jumbo jet, each invention in Tim Harford's fascinating new book has its own curious, surprising and memorable story, a vignette against a grand backdrop. Step by step, listeners will start to understand where we are, how we got here and where we might be going next.
Hidden connections will be laid bare: how the barcode undermined family corner shops; why the gramophone widened inequality; how barbed wire shaped America. We'll meet the characters who developed some of these inventions, profited from them or were ruined by them. We'll trace the economic principles that help to explain their transformative effects. And we'll ask what lessons we can learn to make wise use of future inventions in a world where the pace of innovation will only accelerate.

    Loved this book
I found this book through provoking and really interesting
    Great narration too
    Highly r commended
    Good pick
The short chapters of 50 things is a good way to learn to look at things and enjoy our world. It also is diverse enough to teach something new to most people.
I am bored by the narrator
Would you try another book written by Tim Harford or narrated by Roger Davis?
I love Tim Harford from his More or Less programme on Radio 4 and I am very disappointed that he does not read it himself. After hearing the first story, I do not want to continue because of the narrator.
What other book might you compare Fifty Things That Made the Modern Economy to, and why?
Easy comparison is QI: THE SOUND OF GENERAL IGNORANCE book. It is being read by both authors and it is SOOO good, so ALIVE. You just want to carry on. Not here.
Would you be willing to try another one of Roger Daviss performances?
    Definitely not
Was Fifty Things That Made the Modern Economy worth the listening time?
I only did about 10 mins...
    Any additional comments?
Very disappointed, and I would like to swap for another book
    Very scientific text
Not a light read. probably good, but I abandoned it because it was too technical.

  • The End of Loyalty Audiobook by Rick Wartzman

    Title: The End of Loyalty
Subtitle: The Rise and Fall of Good Jobs in America
    Author: Rick Wartzman
    Narrator: Rick Wartzman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-30-17
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 37 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Having a good, stable job used to be the bedrock of the American dream. Not anymore.
In this richly detailed and eye-opening book, Rick Wartzman chronicles the erosion of the relationship between American companies and their workers. Through the stories of four major employers - General Motors, General Electric, Kodak, and Coca-Cola - he shows how big businesses once took responsibility for providing their workers and retirees with an array of social benefits. At the height of the post-World War II economy, these companies also believed that worker pay needed to be kept high in order to preserve morale and keep the economy humming. Productivity boomed.
But the corporate social contract didn't last. By tracing the ups and downs of these four corporate icons over 70 years, Wartzman illustrates just how much has been lost: job security and steadily rising pay, guaranteed pensions, robust health benefits, and much more. Charting the Golden Age of the '50s and '60s, the turbulent years of the '70s and '80s, and the growth of downsizing, outsourcing, and instability in the modern era, Wartzman's narrative is a biography of the American dream gone sideways.
Deeply researched and compelling, The End of Loyalty will make you rethink how Americans can begin to resurrect the middle class.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.
    Critic Reviews:
"TheEnd of Loyalty is the rich story of how the corporate bonds that were once essential to American life have fractured. It's a prescient book that helps explain the rise of Donald Trump and why so many people feel anger and an acute sense of loss." (Jill Abramson, former executive editor of The New York Times)
"The End of Loyalty tells a story that needs to be told. Rick Wartzman vividly describes a world in which corporate leaders believed that good business meant generating value for their employees as well as their shareholders, an old-fashioned attitude whose time may come again. It's a great book." (Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America and author of Unfinished Business)
"In a lucid economic history of the last seventy-five years, Rick Wartzman's The End of Loyalty convincingly argues that the economic angst and political turbulence of our moment are linked to the collapse of a corporate social contract that guided American economic life for much of the twentieth century. While Wartzman places much of the blame for this problem on business and a growing obsession with profit, he challenges all of us - liberals and conservatives, CEOs and union members - to imagine what a new social contract might look like." (E. J. Dionne Jr., author of Our Divided Political Heart and Why the Right Went Wrong)
    Members Reviews:
    In-depth and interesting
The publisher's summary and the critics' blurbs are accurate.
I read (listened to) this book after I heard the author speak about the book on a podcast. It's a subject I've thought a lot about lately after nearly 40 years in the work place. I've never really felt that any company I worked for had a "social contract" with me, so I was curious to read about an era in which this was the case.

    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
For the past 50 years, the business world has been dominated by the Milton Friedman financial capitalism economic model, which preaches that it is the "sole social responsibility of business to maximize profit for distribution to shareholders". This one-dimensional focus represents a grossly incomplete view of reality - there are many other factors businesses need to pay attention to if they are to thrive and endure - and has resulted in increasing global economic dysfunction, widening inequality, and environmental destruction.
In this book, Roche and Jakub offer a new model that is built around detailed metrics to measure and track performance in all forms of capital, including social, human, and natural as well as financial. And this is not simply theory: The model has been extensively field-tested in live business pilots in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. It is delivering superior measurable performance across the different forms of capital, including generating more profit than a profit maximization approach. Recent high-profile books like Capital in the Twenty-First Century have exposed the shortcomings of today's financial capitalism model, but this book goes far beyond by describing a well-developed, proven alternative.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-09-17
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
The former top CEO examines the scandalous and corrupt reasons behind obscene pay packages for corporate executives - and explains how this hurts all of us - and how we can stop it.
Today, the pay gap between chief executive officers of major US firms and their workers is higher than ever before - depending on the method of calculation, CEOs get paid between 300 and 700 times more than the average worker. Such outsized pay is a relatively recent phenomenon, but despite all the outrage, few detractors truly understand the numerous factors that have contributed to the dizzying upward spiral in CEO compensation.
Steven Clifford, a former CEO who has also served on many corporate boards, has a name for these procedures and practices: the CEO Pay Machine. The CEO Pay Machine is Clifford's thorough and shocking explanation of the 'machine' - how it works, how its parts interact, and how every step pushes CEO pay to higher levels. As Clifford sees it, the payment structure for CEOs begins with shared delusions that reinforce one other. Once this groupthink is accepted as corporate dogma, it becomes infinitely harder to see any decision as potentially irrational or dysfunctional. Yet, as Clifford notes, the Pay Machine has caused immeasurable harm to companies, shareholders, economic growth, and democracy itself. He uses real-life examples of the top four CEOs named the highest paid in 2011 through 2014. Clifford examines how board directors and compensation committees have directly contributed to the rising salaries and bonuses of the country's richest executives; what's more, Clifford argues, each of those companies could have paid their CEOs 90 percent less and performed just as well.
Witty and infuriating, The CEO Pay Machine is a thorough and incisive critique of an economic issue that affects all American workers.
