Autor:: Franz Kafka

Erzähler: Bruno Ganz

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 1 hr and 4 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 03-24-16

Herausgeber: Der Audio Verlag

Kategorien: Classics, European Literature

Atemberaubende Geschichte.

Es ist die Klassik von der Weltliteratur. Sehr kürze aber wirklich erstaunliche Geschichte. Man kann sagen, horror Erzählung. Es ist sicher wert zu lesen.

Really great

It's fantastic that these books are available like this. The only thing that would be better is if they were available somehow in dual-language editions on Kindle.

I often re-read a paragraph just to savor the descriptions, translated them into English, and marveled at the clarity of the emotions. Beautiful!

Narrateur: Jean Louis Barrault, Françoise Rosay, Louis Jouvet, Michel Simon

Format: Original Recording

Durée: 36 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 11-20-15

Éditeur: Editions JADE

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Title: The Snow Queen and Other Fairy Stories

Author: Hans Christian Andersen

Narrator: Greta Scacchi

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 57 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-18-15

Publisher: silksoundbooks Limited

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have become so much a part of the Western culture that they are often assumed to be a part of folklore and not credited to the strange and gangling Dane who wrote them.

Several years before the fairy tales came out, the Brothers Grimm had published their tales taken from the folklore of European stories, but Andersen was to change the understanding of what a tale can achieve. His tales were not the black-and-white moral fables of previous fairy stories; here there was ambiguity. Very often the bringer of truth and understanding would be a child, not a good fairy or an angel. And, most surprisingly for his readers, more often than not there would be no happy ending.

Many of his stories deal with the concept of being different or misunderstood. This is presumed to be a direct reflection of Andersen's life. He was a strange child and grew into a man who seldom felt he belonged. This is beautifully explored in stories like "The Ugly Duckling", giving a form to that very common feeling of not being recognised for what we are. His indeterminate sexuality is often ascribed as one of the main driving forces behind his writing - "The Little Mermaid" is said to be one of his explorations of impossible love.

"The Snow Queen" is the longest and most intriguing of all his stories and is almost a Pilgrim's Progress, with the heroine battling temptation and wickedness to free her less virtuous playfellow from the clutches of the gloriously evil Snow Queen. These are not the fairy stories of the pink princess in the sparkly palace. They are, however, some of the most popular and powerful of all stories. They have been copied and adapted almost continuously since he wrote them, and we think you will love them as much as we do.

Title: 56 Fables of la Fontaine

Subtitle: Aesop French short stories

Author: Jean de La Fontaine

Narrator: Stuart Walker

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 45 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-12-15

Publisher: Astorg Audio

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine were issued in several volumes from 1668 to 1694. They are classics of French literature. The Fables supply delights to three different ages: the child rejoices in the freshness and vividness of the story, the eager student of literature in the consummate art with which it is told, the experienced man of the world in the subtle reflections on character and life which it conveys. The Fables were regarded as providing an excellent education in morals for children, and the first edition was dedicated to the six-year old Dauphin, the Eldest Son of the King.

Eventually the fables were learned by heart for such entertainments and afterwards they were adopted by the education system, not least as linguistic models as well. Most famous Fables are The raven and the fox, The frog that wished to be as big as the ox, The city rat and the country rat, The wolf and the dog, The lion going to war, for example. The Fables were adapted from classical fabulists like Aesop. The subject of each of the Fables is often common property of many ages and races.

What gives La Fontaine's Fables their rare distinction is the freshness in narration, the deftness of touch, the unconstrained suppleness of metrical structure, the unfailing humor of the pointed the consummate art of their apparent artlessness. Keen insight into the foibles of human nature is found throughout, but in the later books ingenuity is employed to make the fable cover, yet convey, social doctrines and sympathies more democratic than the age would have tolerated in unmasked expression.

Almost from the start, the Fables entered French literary consciousness to a greater degree than any other classic of its literature.

For generations many of these little apologues have been read, committed to memory, recited, paraphrased, by every French school child. Countless phrases from them are current idioms, and familiarity with them is assumed.

"La Fontaine's Fables," wrote Madame de Sévigné, "are like a basket of strawberries. You begin by selecting the largest and best, but, little by little, you eat first one, then another, till at last the basket is empty".

Beautiful Book

What I liked:

It was very well written, the narrative and characters were very interesting with right amount of details. Makes you reflect on how to live your life and how your choices can affect it.

What I didnât like:

The book starts with great philosophical content. However the middle of the book drags out a little too much. I kept waiting for the big moral of the story but it didnât really have an end that wraps things up, the moral happens through the book and is left for reader to question things as they develop by themselves. I didnât really care for the jump in time and how major details were omitted by author.

I

Good book, I didn't like it much though

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a heart breaking story of the effects of selfishness and narcissism. I am not a huge fan of literature that utilizes characters that are all wit and no substance. I feel that is the way with most of the characters in this book. Lord Henry is one-dimensional and his personality consists of nothing more than witty ways of saying the same thing over and over. Dorian Gray shows hints of complexity throughout the book, but his choices, not to mention his total lack of making decisions based on what he thinks rather than other people, force him into the one-dimensional corner as well. I liked the overall story and appreciated the message that although Dorian Gray could escape the corporeal negatives his actions would have caused that the mental trauma is what got to him. I feel that it is well written with a good story. I dock a star because I just don't like the non-stop witty and empty characters.

Classic Lit for a Literature Lover

So far as Classic literature goes, Dorian Gray is very readable. It's fairly slow to start (one of the drawbacks of reading on a Kindle is that it's very easy to glance at the bottom of the page and think "hey, I'm 30% of the way through the novel and the plot is only just now getting started") and if you're at all familiar with the premise, you have a pretty good idea of where the story's going. However, since the specific plotpoints in this book are less widely known than a lot of other Classics, there's still room for tension, surprise, and engagement.

Not for people with short attention spans

Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this book. I wanted to read this book so I can say I read at least one 'classic' as an adult.
