Publisher's Summary:
Death waits at the top of the world in this adrenaline-laced thriller from Sarah Lotz, perfect for anyone who loves the film The Descent or John Krakauer's book Into Thin Air.
Adrenaline junkie Simon Newman sneaks onto private land to explore a dangerous cave in Wales with a strange man he's met online. But Simon gets more than he bargained for when the expedition goes horribly wrong. Simon emerges, the only survivor, after a rainstorm trap the two in the cave. Simon thinks he's had a lucky escape. But his video of his near-death experience has just gone viral.
Suddenly Simon finds himself more famous than he could ever have imagined. Now he's faced with an impossible task: he's got to defy death once again and film the entire thing. The whole world will be watching. There's only one place on earth for him to pit himself against the elements: Mt Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. But Everest is also one of the deadliest spots on the planet. Two hundred and eighty people have died trying to reach its peak. And Simon's luck is about to run out.
Members Reviews:
Claustrophobic, Deeply Chilling
This may be Sarah Lotz's best work to date. Her gift for literary foreshadowing is incredible. Within the first pages, a creepy, ominous tone is established and leads to a sense of dread that continues throughout the book. The characters were very well-developed and believable.
At different points, you'll feel dismayed at the protagonist, a thrill seeker whose brushes with death continue to haunt him. The sights and sounds as described in Simon's head are one thing. His inability to say "no" is even when the stakes may result in death or severe injury is another. His insight and judgment unravel more with each thrill-seeking adventure.
A chilling narrative is established early on, and as the pace of the story develops, that deep chill escalates to palpable dread and fear. Simon's flashbacks, hazily-remembered visual and auditory hallucinations with a mounting sense of terror are vividly described. Early in the story, Simon's claustrophobia and panic are very well detailed. He is tormented acutely by what he may or may not have seen, heard, and experienced but can't fully recall or prove.
Simon's best and only friend is manipulative and unabashedly insensitive to the fragile emotional state Simon is in. Lonely, traumatized early in life, Simon is convinced yet again by his partner, who seems hell bent on exploiting him to acquiesce to new and ever more death-defying adventures for the ostensible purpose of a blog. The reasons, held to the light further in the book, include exploitation, profiteering and singularly cruel betrayal.
I read this novel in two days, a simply incredible book that I couldn't put down. Sarah Lotz has won me over completely with her unique style, masterful story-crafting, and characters.
Disclaimer: I've never climbed a mountain, or trekked a cave. I didn't need to because Ms. Lotz's narrative grabs the reader by the heartstrings and nerves and doesn't let go until the last page. Maps and a brief glossary of terms are provided within the book.
