    Critic Reviews:
"A perfect little gem, the best Cold War thriller I've read in years." (The New York Times)
"Concise, smart and funny, this novel turns Cold War spy cliches on their head." (Publishers Weekly)
"Littell deserves his comparisons with Deighton and le Carre." (The Times, London)

    The Defection of A.J. Lewinter
I found this book to be very slow moving and unsatisfying. The "central" character, A.J. Lewinter, turns out to be a bit player in this imitation melodrama. We never really find out from him why he defected, but only get speculation from the "spooks" on both sides as to why Lewinter traded sides. Since the book never really grabbed me, I had to force myself to continue listening. Then when the book ended, I said " . . . that's it?" Save your money and your time: choose something else to read/listen.
    Brick Makes the Story
A good story with interesting quirks which Scott Brick brings alive. Not in the same class as "The Company" and has some areas which are only salvaged by Brick's talent as a narrator. This is a book you must pay attention to in order to "get" lots of the nuances. If you enjoy Littell or Brick this one is worth your time.
    Luke Warm At Best
Not even close to the quality of "The Company". However, it is readable and enjoyable -- just a disappointment after reading his show stopper.
    Droning
I found the story slow and full of tangents. Some of the social philosophies and spook actions were at times interesting, but I quit listening to it. I found the reader's voice to be a bit droning and character's inflections started sounding the same. The accents were helpful, however, when figuring out who was saying what.
    Slow moving - lacking substance
This was perhaps one of the bottom 5 books that I have downloaded. Save your money. The characters are flat, the plot predictable. I had to force myself to finish it and would not recommend spending your time listening. I continue to like Scott Brick as a narrator but even he can't make up for a weak plot.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 47 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
The New Yorker raved that her bestselling memoir, The Spy Wore Red, "reads like a perfect thriller." Now the real-life model-turend-spy presents a thirlling novel of suspense -- based on the true intrigues of Carlos the Jackal. One of the most infamous names in the history of espionage, Carlos managed to elude his enemies for decades...until his recent arrest made headlines across the world. This exciting ficitonal account reveals the insidious methods -- and brilliant genius -- behind his international maneuvers. It is the story of a man whose smooth, cultured charm hides a secret identity and a shattering plot -- and the one woman who discovers he is actually the notorious Carlos the Jackal.
The inspiration for the Countess of Romanones' novel was her own actual meeting with Carlos the Jackal in 1977, when he delivered documents to her home in Madrid; and her experience as a consultant with a wide variety of world specialists on international terrorism.

    Intriguing
While the reader's voice is gravelly, I couldn't stop listening. Knowing that this novel is based on fact continually drew me in to the thread of the action. I recommend this one.
    Snore
I cannot understand how this has an overall score of 3.7 stars! or why it is priced at $53.87. This is the worst audobook I have ever heard. The story is tedious and slow moving, the "countess" pretentious and the name dropping is ridiculous and the reader is annoying and monotonous. Skip this one folks.
    Absorbing but disappointing
This has all the makings of an excellent yarn, but the prose is flabby and trite. By removing all the superfluous detail as well as the unnecessary adjectives and adverbs, the countess would actually heighten the suspense and enjoyment. The choice of reader was also unfortunate - her voice verges on unpleasant and her range of expression, as someone once said (probably Dorothy Parker) "runs the gamut from A to B."
fun, but not as good as earlier books
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed listening to the narration, very relaxing. however, this particular book was more of a society name dropping excercise than previous books. It is harder to picture her in the action heroine role in this story. Still fun to listen too.
Would you be willing to try another book from Aline and Countess of Romanones ? Why or why not?
yes, hoping to hear more of the author's past writing quality and experiences.
    Intriguing!
At first, I was a little put off by the reader's voice. But, as I was drawn into the story, the reader's style added to the interest of the story. I found the story very interesting--especially because it is based on fact. I'm certain this is the way spying was done at the time of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down! by Anne (not Robert)

Sharp-minded, somewhat cynical, McCready is a maverick whose independent style has often driven him beyond the rules. Presented to a panel of his peers, McCready's exploits may be dazzling evidence of his value, or damning proof that he must be put aside. Presiding over this long-shot effort by a great spymaster to save his career will be Timothy Edwards, McCready's most determined foe, and in the balance hangs the future of Britain's secret intelligence operations.

    Disappointed
There is abridged, and there is the Cliff Notes. This version more resembles a granola bar than a light meal. A fan of Forsythe will be disappointed that little of his rich narrative has survived the compression process. Save your credit and wait for a full unabridged version.
    The Deceiver
This is one of my very favorite books. Classic British spy with superb story and reader.
It's actually several books in one in that it relates several cases the spy master has worked on during his career. So it is perfect for reading a section at a time. My only complaint is that only this abridged version is available but don't let that put you off - it is still a great listen. I know eventually they will put out an unabridged version BUT it's not going to have this good a reader as he will be a hard act to follow. So I recommend this book and not wait for the complete version.
    Fantastic
Wonderful, as usual another great story with interesting characters and suspense.
    not good
a mix of three stories all too short and quickly over. A likely change of approach for Fred but not to my liking. I prefer a good meaty long involved story. If you really like Fred then you probably wont be too dissapointed, but be prepared for a let down.

Not as good as the usual Daniel Silva book.
This was not nearly as good as the Gabriel Allon series books. Less punch and depth. it never grabbed me.
    An OK novel
What did you like best about The Marching Season? What did you like least?
Daniel Silva was recommended to me by a friend. I am hoping that the later books are better. This one just never grabbed me.
Would you ever listen to anything by Daniel Silva again?
    Sure.
Have you listened to any of Campbell Scotts other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes and this one was just as good.
Was The Marching Season worth the listening time?
    Yes.

    Modern day sci-fi thriller
This book was a departure for Sidney Sheldon, who is usually known for plots involving romanance and adult drama. This, however, is a story worthy of the "X files", and a very good one, too. A mixture of sci-fi and intrigue, the plot moves quickly along and is loaded with action. Fans of sci-fi and suspense will like this one.
An amazing story but a horrible narration
If you could sum up The Doomsday Conspiracy in three words, what would they be?
    Thrilling, fast-paced, exciting
What didnt you like about David Dukess performance?
This says it is narrated by "David Duke" but the narrator is a female and not David Duke. The narrator of this book (not Duke) was so monotone throughout the novel. She could have given such a great performance with the material but it just failed. Even when there were multiple voices within dialogue it was just so bland. It's a shame.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's throughly entertaining but, I hate to say it on an audiobook site, but read the book instead of listening to this narration.
    Slow Down!
The reading of this book is done in such a speed that left me breathless! It is very hard to enjoy the flow of the story with such a hurry. The sentences are pasted together and there is no rhythm to the text, making if much more difficult that the story deserves, being such a nice novel. The story, on the other hand, is very enjoyable, a very fun Sidney Sheldon book that changes the normal leading lady from the other books to a male spy running around the world in a global conspiracy!
    WORST OF ALL TIME
This is the worst thing I have ever listened to.The narrator was pathetic, I actually found myself shaking my head in disbelief at times. The book is predicable , the story line just dumb. DOnt get it sat away
    Not David Dukes
Could not get beyond chapter 1. Female narrator spoke too fast in a monotone voice without any emotion at all. First audio book I could listen to!

    NO.1
Love it!! Good book, never been disappointed by this author. Very enjoyable narration too
    Great book
One of the best in the Private series, but don't miss out on the others!
No 1 Suspect is book No 4?
I enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed all the Private series, but I think the resolution to the main crime in this novel was rushed and could have been developed more thoroughly earlier in the narrative. Whilst the Private crime investigation series books all stand alone and each one is a good story, I prefer to listen to them in series order so that there is a logic to the background drama of relationships between the characters. The series order as it appears on Audible does not match the date of publication and this may cause the listener to question some elements of the background stories if the books are heard in the Audible sequence.
My understanding is that this book is number four in the series, coming straight after Private Games, which in turn follows Private London.
    Good enjoyable read.
I am new to James Patterson but like him, not quite sure how, or why he feels the need for a co-writer, but there you are.
It was a good story, not exeptional but still a good read.
However, if I am going to nit pick JP seems a bit obsessed by what his characters are wearing eg "Justine walked into the room her hair falling onto her dark blue Jacket which she wore over a whitle silk shirt teamed with navy jeans, I picked up my brown leather jacket that was draped over the chair and put it on over my Armani shirt and jeans" at one point I wanted to shout "oh for goodness sake man get on with it, I'm not interested in what you are wearing". It became irritating after a while and I skipped the fashion bits.
That was the reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5. Still a good story though.
    Private no 1 suspect
It was pretty dreadful just full of American slang that grated on me.... The story line was poor and not worth buying.

    Publisher's Summary:
The president of the United States has broken the nation's number-one commandment, and by doing so has put himself in the crosshairs of America's number-one counter-terrorism operative, Scot Harvath.
Prologue, two years previously: Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In the dead-of-night, five of the most dangerous detainees in the war on terror are pulled from their isolation cells, held at gunpoint, and told to strip off their orange jumpsuits. The prisoners are issued civilian clothes and driven to the base airfield, where they are loaded aboard a black Boeing 727 that whisks them away to freedom.
Flash forward to the present day: Scot Harvath awakes to find that his girlfriend, Tracy Hastings, has been killed, and that the assassin has left behind a very strange calling card. The doorframe above Harvath's entryway has been painted with blood, but not just any blood. Analysis indicates that the killer used lamb's blood tainted with a unique radioactive isotope. The isotope is part of a top-secret program the United States developed to covertly track the movements of the nation's worst enemies.
Angered with the lack of cooperation he is receiving, and against the direct orders of the president, Harvath mounts his own operation to hunt down Tracy's killers and to exact revenge. It's a quest that will thrust everything he holds dear, including his life, into absolute peril.

Yes, but! Please learn how to pronounce secreted and long lived. My attention is pulled tAut, and then I hear se-Cree-ted instead of see-cre-Ted. YHWH same for long lifted instead of long lived. Ahhhhh! Once is a mistake, more than that is disappointing! Some of us listen because we cannot read. What a sad state to be in, especially for those of us who have read before! Please do NOT disappoint us! Some one should " proof read" the reading. Short lifed.......really? This educated reader asks for better please!?

    I don't like Abridged books
I also made the mistake of buying this book before noticing it was abridged.... I really like the Brad Thor books and this one is missing soo much. I feel like most of the technical and operational details that make his books so enjoyable were recklessly cut. I never really felt like I was there and that is part of the appeal of his writings.

They are an international elite unit created by NATO to carry out missions where no other could hope to succeed. A mix of Seals, Delta Force, British SAS and French, German and Polish SpecOps operators. Led by a former Navy Seal, Lieutenant Abe Talley. This is Echo Six. Even before they finish training a crisis develops that requires their unique and bloody brand of soldiering.
Hostages are about to die, facing execution at the hands of the scourge of the seas - pirates. The objective is inside Somalia. Al Qaeda has taken piracy under its control to fund their worldwide quest for terror and death in the name of Islam. Talley's unit is hastily transferred to a nuclear carrier patrolling the Arabian Sea. Echo Six is to go ashore, kill the pirates and rescue the hostages. Exfiltration will be via the advanced, super-silent Black Hawks of the secretive 160th Aviation Regiment. Yet plans can and often do go wrong. And this time is no exception.
Fighting with an ill-prepared yet expert squad of operatives, Talley has to control the bitter rivalry of his own men as they close with the enemy. An enemy who is well equipped and well prepared for the coming attack. Behind him, his own commanders are riven by political infighting and personal agendas that threaten to tear his unit apart almost before it has got off the ground. And the mission rapidly expands to take in new and larger, more dangerous objectives. Echo Six: Black Ops is an exciting and bloodthirsty story of the fierce, no-quarters fighting of a NATO SpecOps unit.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    NARRATION.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    NARRATED bye anyone else.
What didnt you like about Tim Welchs performance?
Narration was all monitone and dry.You could tell he was reading with no emotion or character. I have heard 5 th graders that are better then him.
    Any additional comments?
I wasted money on this book worst narration i have ever heard. I couldnt even finish thats sad because i have sat thru alot of boring narration but this unbearable.
    Nonstop!
    military, pirates, action-adventure
Fast paced and engaging military action. The characters are interesting and engaging, the action is nonstop. The premise of an international unit made up of the most skilled (and egotistical) military men from several countries is a big hook, and the writing does not disappoint.
Tim Welch is more than up to the challenge of narration!
    Would not recommend
Got thru the firs 3chapters of this book and felt like i was listening to a 12 year old's version of a black ops novel.
Not sure if it was the narrator, the writing (as this is audible) or both. But i had to turn it off.
Have listened to over 80 books the likes of eisler, flynn, thor, greaney. This was just plain bad in comparison.
    Stop right there!
What would have made Echo Six: Black Ops - Raid on Somalia better?
The best would have been to not published this or any other book in this series.
Would you ever listen to anything by Eric Meyer again?
Well I did get the second book and listen to it. In the hope that it would be better. But no, I did not get any better. It got worse if you can believe that. I will not ever read a book from the self proclaimed author Eric Meyer.
