    Another scorcher
I simply cannot get enough of this series. I'm horrified that I'm going to have to wait until February for the next instalment. What is it with writers? Don't they understand the contemporary need for instant gratification? Pshaw!
This next step, or should I say stumble, along the path with the slow horses does so at a whip-crack pace. I like the premise of this story too. Yes, it's sometimes far fetched and, as the series has gone on, the characters seem less bungling and more Bond but by now we're on their side anyway and want to see them perk up a bit and not get taken out by slickly professional assassins.
Sean Barrett is certainly now the voice of the hero Lamb and turns in another great performance.
My only complaint is the continual use of Americanisms that we British have to stomach: 'hood' 'cops' and I bet the 'BuzzLightyear' quip was a substitution for the colonials - Lamb wouldn't have a clue about 'Toy Story'. It's a British author give us the British publication for god's sake. However, I'm not going to penalise the author or narrator for an annoying corporate decision - only, listener be warned!
    Excellent as always
Love the characters. Slough House is a wonderful invention, and is packed with terrific characters you just want to follow and observe. And I love the trade craft.
A great thriller, like all in this series. Now I just have to wait for the next one.
    The Slow Horses return!
Another superb tale of the sidelined spooks and their acerbic boss, Jackson Lamb, one of the best characters of recent years. Excellent narration as usual.
    Great series
If you could sum up Spook Street in three words, what would they be?
Modern take on MI5's miss-fits and wannabes
What about Seán Barretts performance did you like?
    Excellent narration.
    Any additional comments?
Great series of novels. Characters get better and better.
    A joy to listen to
Characters, plot, prose, all excellent. Sean Barrett does his usual outstanding job. Like the rest of this series, a real treat. One sly phrase at least made me laugh aloud. I do hope there will be more of the series.

Spoilt by music and poor quality audio
What disappointed you about Simple Genius?
naff music and back ground sounds - gun shots etc. Plus poor quality audio kept skipping and jumping - I returned it
    Any additional comments?
Story was good, like the characters and narratives of Sam - good reading - but really did it need the special effects? Notice that future books by DB have 2 narrators - boy and girl - won't be reading anymore - I'm listening to a book not a play.
    I loved this,
Reminded me of Moonlighting watching it week by week in the 80s. Gripping thriller which was not too obvious and easy to solve
    Dirty government tricks!!!
Brilliant story telling. So unique its refreshing. The two main characters have great dialogue and presence . This was a page turner full of excitement, twists and turns and thoroughly enjoyable. This series is the tops.
    Good read but
This was a good story and enjoyed it .sadly I got a bit irritated by the fact it skipped in parts and meant rewinding . Narration was good and presented story well .
    Great story
Great story, thoroughly enjoyable. I liked the music as well. I hope for more from these characters.

    Release date: 09-13-16
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 24 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of Apple Tree Yard, a masterful thriller about espionage, love, and redemption
John Harper is in hiding in a remote hut on a tropical island. As he lies awake at night, listening to the rain on the roof, he believes his life may be in danger. But he is less afraid of what is going to happen than of what he's already done.
In a local town, he meets Rita, a woman with her own tragic history. They begin an affair, but can they offer each other redemption? Or do the ghosts of the past always catch up with us in the end?
Moving between Europe during the Cold War, Civil Rights-era California, and Indonesia during the massacres of 1965 and the subsequent military dictatorship, Black Water explores some of the darkest events of recent history through the story of one troubled man.
In this gripping follow-up to Apple Tree Yard, Louise Doughty writes with the intelligence, vivid characterization, and moral ambiguity that make her fiction resonate in the reader's mind long after the final page.
    Members Reviews:
    Worth the time, not brilliant
I loved the reader's voice and cadence. It fit the deliberate writing style. The story had a couple of great moments and is more sophisticated than your average spy tale. I confess that I more enjoy the action in a cookie cutter thriller even when I see through it. I enjoyed seeing the character at early, middle and later middle life. I enjoyed his thoughts and their realism. But I prefer more action and obvious drama, because I read spy novels less to appreciate the art, and more to briefly step into another world. The book did illuminate some things of beauty about life, but also darkness that we already see all too clearly and can't help but think about. I know many people enjoy reading about life's agonies, and feel that a story without them is unrealistic and then lacks value. I'm the opposite. I think tales and stories must be about extraordinary topics to justify their telling. So I'm always willing to cut an author some slack if their plots are a bit too convenient. That's just not what this author is about.

    Performance ruins the story
the performance is awful, accent ridiculous . it ruined the book for me I could not listen. I am not British and I recognized this was not a native speaker.
    Historical intrigue
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, great story, fascinating historical facts interwoven. Narrator dreadful. If the story hadn't been so good, I would have bailed because of her. If narration had been good, book would have been fantastic.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Autumn in Oxford?
Encounters with historical figures like Bayard Rustin.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Breathy, phony English accent was truly gratingly bad. Speech pattern distracting.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Historical revelations were moving
    Any additional comments?
Would have been a great physical read
12 hrs of a rushed hysterical whisper - whew!
    Any additional comments?
Another audiobook that should have never been released. Audible should pull this dud. The Amazon reviews are good and it is a Kindle Unlimited, so I will give the read a try.

    Five Stars
    Good read.
    A Different Perspective
It is hard to be objective when it comes to reviewing an audio book, as there are so many elements one can be sidetracked into reviewing. At the same time those elements have to be included in the review, but the most important part is always the audio itself.
The Unabridged Brilliance Audio Die Another Day Audio Book spans 4 casette tapes or 2 CDs and is approximately 6 hours in length. It is based upon Raymond Benson's 245 page novelisation of Die Another Day, which is taken from a screenplay by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.
Sitting down and listening to the adventure that is Die Another Day is a vastly different experience from sitting down and watching the adventure unfurl onscreen, but this doesn't ever seem to detract from the audio book, nor does it detract from the novelisation. It isn't necessarily true that Raymond Benson's work is better then the film, but the novel, and in turn the audio book, does posses a unique quality; scenes that will never appear on the silver screen. It is obvious when listing to the story that particular scenes, for instance flash backs, just won't make it to an print of Die Another Day. The novelisation definitely feels closer to Benson's Tomorrow Never Dies then The World Is Not Enough due to its added scenes.
The novelisation is read by American Michael Page, and first uncertainties about an American accent reading a Bond novel were soon dispelled. This is largely due to Page's theatre background, most modern actors aiming for a neutral accent that Page easily finds. Furthermore, he brings in accents for particular characters, some of which he does repeat, but never in the same scene. Jinx and Miranda Frost have particularly different accents and Zao's voice is brilliantly delivered. Colonel Moon's voice is almost touch and go at times as it sometimes comes across as a satire Asian accent.
Despite his theatre background, some of Page's pronunciations may not hit directly home with the audience. For instance, his pronunciation of Omega tended towards `a-mega'. Another pronunciation that `felt' strange was that of Zao's name. To date it had always been sounded, in my head at least, as `Zay-oh' rather Page's pronunciation is closer to `Zah-oh'. Page's pronunciation is similar to that of the onscreen pronunciation, so any unfamiliarity will be seemingly dispensed after the films release.
An audio-book is definitely not for everyone, however, Brilliance Audio's Die Another Day Audio Book does `work' and is very entertaining. Bond fans should definitely buy either a copy of the novelisation or a copy of the audio book, depending on their reading preferences.
    Extremely disappointing.
After a long string of highly successful Bond novels, this is Benson's last one.

    Members Reviews:
Just a copy of the movie
From the perspective of a person who has seen the movie, the book gives the impression of being a cheap and short let-down made based on the movie script. The thing is that the way the movie is made just doesn't work as a book that well, and the book mostly just tries to describe what is being seen on the screen. That, however, is a fault of Benson, and Vance's reading is really brilliant, as a have grown to expect from the other Bond books he has read. Still, please watch the movie instead of listening this book.
Good film plot but poorly realized as a book
Two things sadly lacking - an editor for the author, a producer for the performer.

    Excellent.
One of the best books I have read lately. A bit dragged out at the end but worth the read!
    The Brave Widow
I liked the setting, the characters and the plot. I liked it all!
I would recommend it for readers who like adventure and suspense.
It was well written and I like the character Gabriel who ties these novels together.
    Eerily Accurate
I always enjoyed Mr Silvas books but this one struck home hard as the latest attack in Nice France was happening as I listened to Lily work her way thru the perils. From start to finish I enjoyed every moment. My only complaint is that it had to end. A great listen!
