I love Twin Peaks!!!

As a fan of Twin Peaks and being so excited about the news season it was a special treat to listen to "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer" read by the voice of Laura Palmer Sheryl Lee. I really loved it and if you are a fan of the show, you will love it too.

Wrapped in plastic

As a newcomer to 'Twin Peaks' I hadn't read this novel when it came out so the audio recording was my introduction to Laura's diary. It's a very raw, dark story and a far cry from the quirkiness of the show (take this as a warning if necessary). Jennifer Lynch's writing is very strong and elevates what could have been a gimmick in other hands.

As to the narration, Sheryl Lee gives a very powerful performance as Laura, delivering a very emotional, harrowing and devastating experience for the listener. Her performance as BOB in particular is downright sinister. It's hard to listen to at times, which is a compliment to be talent.

One minor issue: Flipping to my Kindle version I noticed that at various points throughout the story the reader is informed that pages have been ripped from the diary. In the recording there are no indications that the diary has been tampered with. I imagine most people will miss out on this element just listening to the audio.

Small caveats aside, this is essential listening for 'Twin Peaks' completists.

The book is a very interesting insight into the world of Twin Peaks and the mind of Laura Palmer. The tone of the book (Laura's diary entries) progressively becomes darker and darker, all well captured by S.Lee's performance.

Many other better books about Buffy, pass on this one.

Worst book about Buffy I have read, and I have read more than a few. None of the essays raise above the worst fanfic you can find for free on the web or could have heard in any school cafeteria when the series was running. Especially annoying is the faux university essay about Xander, I am sure I have read several fanfic stories on the same subject that are better. Also annoying is the repetition of 'insights' into the slayer's love life over several of the essays.

Also appears that some of the essays were written by people who only know about the series from listening to people talk about it, instead of watching it. One author writes about a guy she has a one night stand with and then spent the next several weeks pining away for as if they had a long-term mutual relationship. He wasn't, "high maintenance" he wasn't maintenance at all because he was never in a relationship with her. To him she was just another Freshman one night stand(this was emphasized several times over several episodes). Nothing more.

Into every generation, a Slayer is born and people will write stuff about her

Just goes to show, fantasy & sci-fi writers are human, too, and they fall prey to frenzied fandom as much as you and I. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER has been gone for a few years now, and I still miss it, and I still look around for some sort of substitute to satisfy Buffy withdrawal.

varying quality but mostly good "companion" to the Firefly 'verse

this is an anthology of essays by sf writers, Jewel Staite (the actress who played Kaylee) and academics. Most of it is very enjoyable and gives you a much broader picture of the series and the exacting care taken to put that series onscreen.

A couple of the essays were a little too dry-academese for my taste, and since the essays were written before the Serenity film was released, some of the speculation on the 'verse's backstory is just plain wrong. A couple times in Staite's piece you can almost hear her trying not to give any spoilers for the movie.

But still well worth reading if you're one of those fans who love the show and were bummed when it was cancelled so early.

Some good, some better, some... not so good.

The cancellation ofFireflyleft many questions unanswered, and many theories on character back-story and motivation are expounded upon in this collection. The essays, edited by series writer and long-time Joss Whedon co-conspirator Jane Espenson, were all written in the period of time between the end of the series and the release ofSerenity, which gives the book a quaintly episodic feel in an I-know-something-you-don't-know sort of way.

The essays themselves are something of a mixed bag - if you're a fan of the show, at least one of them is pretty much guaranteed to piss you off. But fans will appreciate contributions from other long-time Whedon co-conspirator Marti Noxon, and a sweetly nostalgic accounting of favorite moments from actress Jewel Staite.

Uneven, but valuable collection

I have to agree with the reviewer who commented that this collection was a mish-mash. It falls uncomfortably between the scholarly and the fan-oriented. But I found much worthwhile and enjoyable writing alongside less-useful commentary. If we set aside papers where the theory overwhelms the material such as in "Whores and Goddesses" and ones that are rather pointless such as "Firefly vs. The Tick" and not hugely funny satires such as "Mirror/Mirror" and "The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of Firefly" we have a slim volume including reference materials on the Mandarin used in the series, well-argued commentary on the mixing of genres ("Just Shove Him in the Engine, or The Role of Chivalry in Firefly") and some very insightful commentary on the characters ("More Than a Marriage of Convenience"), on the culture ("Asian Objects in Space") and the setting ("Star Truck").

So, an indispensable, though not entirely satisfactory, collection.

Great for fans of Firefly.

The book was written fairly well but had several repeating instances. Literally word for word repeating as if the reader had to restart the recording?

As far as other audio books go, this was one that hit close to home very hard. I found myself nodding my head a lot of times due to agreeing with the truth the author had to say.

What about Alex Wagners performance did you like?

I liked the ease and natural flow in Alex's voice. It was a very peaceful read and easy to follow. Great speaking voice, very soothing and relaxing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This is definitely a book i wanted to listen to in one sitting. It was short and to the point, no fluff at all and very informative and entertaining. It's packed with such vital information on making it in the freelancing film world.

Being a person who has freelanced in the film and television industry for the last 5 years, I found myself learning more about the business, and was also quite shocked at the similarities in the stories and experiences mentioned in the book.

Could have been more entertaining or comical. but it gets the points across. Certainly worth the $7 i paid for it. It has me more focused than ever on creating my own projects, building my brand, diversifying my income etc. Definitely a cheap must read for someone who doesn't have insights or connections to industry professionals.

I've been in videography as a business for over a year now and this book didn't bring me any new ideas. If you're absolutely new/green/starting out then yes this'll be useful to you. However if you're already in the field I'd not recommend this.

This guy's tone leaves much to be imagined. Its mono, lacks enthusiasm and its hard to work out when one chapter ends and another starts. Also he's not edited out mistakes - unless that was just my download that corrupted.... unless that was just my download that corrupted. Like that a few times.

Better To Get The Book

I adore, nay, worship Outlander. But listening to this book instead of reading it was a big mistake. Nothing personal to the narrator, but she needs to stick to fiction narration. Her lilting tone and pauses before "he/she said" made listening almost unbearable. Narrating nonfiction evidently does not require lots of emotional and dramatic content.

And besides, I didn't realize there were pictures that I was missing.

On a better note, the behind-the-scenes information was terrific, although I would have wished for more insight into the actors and their characters. The production is absolutely amazing in every way and deserves way more attention and awards than it has received.

A side note: Give me Outlander over "Game Of..." any day!

What didnt you like about Tiffany Morgans performance?

Tiffany has a lovely voice but her pauses before the "he said, she said (specific name)" was frustrating. I thought once she got into the book, she would stop that pause. It was incredibly distracting. To the point that I was so focused on her pauses, I lost track of the story. I would expect this from a new narrator but Audible.com has such gifted narrators. It was a HUGE disappointment.

Bought this the second I got in to work today. I had this on audio cassette as a kid and loved it, was so excited to see it's back in print on audible. A must for die hard Twin Peaks fans!

Couldn't put it down

One of those rare volumes that keeps you turning the page. Seth Shapiro took me on a journey that I hadn't realized I'd already been on. From the advent of wireless through Lucy, Johnny and even Monty Python, Shapiro offers a history that (a) I had no idea I was interested in, and (b) was a reflection of my own, personal history. I wish I had it when I started to work, it definitely would have helped a lot.

Lori is so right when she says : if "somebody" else did it, then you can !

She is clear, simple, and goes straight to the point.

And icing on the cake : she loves actors and you can feel it through every single word.

In her book, The Organic Actor, Lori Wyman offers readers a chance to understand the film and television audition world from a casting director's perspective. She insightfully explores each of the controversial subjects related to the audition process, such as how you should slate, the usage of props, and what your resume should look like. The lnformation in Ms. Wyman's book opens the door of success for the average actor - now all he has to do is walk through it. This is an important book for all actors who want to book jobs.

Go on IMDb and look it up, under Marc Macaulay aka MANSAUCE!!! Sick pervert. Donât buy this book, Marc will know where you live, if you have kids. He also employs hackers to steal your private information. do you really want some weirdo showing up at your kids school, looking for our son or daughter. DON'T DO IT !!!

Not what I expected

I was expecting a collection of movies with pop psycho analysis. Instead I got a brain-stretching treatment on myth, culture, good and evil, and "the hero", ranging from Batman to Beowulf. And what Stor y Telling does with them. Not a light read, but a profitable one. So 4 stars.
