    Title: Peter Pan
    Author: J. M. Barrie
    Narrator: Christopher Cazenove
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-01-10
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 159 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Barrie works an indisputable magic on listeners of all ages in this classic tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up. As a baby, Peter Pan fell out of his carriage and was taken by fairies to Neverland. There, he can fly and is the champion of the Lost Boys and a friend to the fairy Tinker Bell. Revisiting England, Peter becomes involved with Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, all of whom accompany Peter to Neverland. The children have many adventures and vanquish the pirate Captain Hook. The Darlings eventually return home with the Lost Boys, leaving Peter Pan to his perpetual boyhood.
Since Peter Pan first appeared as a play in 1904, the boy hero has achieved mythological status in the English-speaking world. The story's emotional truths about youth, freedom, and responsibility continue to touch the heart and thrill the imagination.
James Matthew Barrie (1860 - 1937) was born in Scotland, the son of a weaver and the ninth of 10 children. His mother saw to it that he was educated, despite the family's low income. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and spent two years on the Nottingham Journal before settling in London as a freelance writer in 1885. His short stories, essays, and novels were well received, and he began to gain a fine reputation as a playwright. His most enduring work is Peter Pan, which is based on stories he made up for children in his neighborhood.

I will listen again and again
This is perhaps my favorite audible so far. I have listened to this with my daughters three times now. It is much more fascinating than the Disney version of Peter Pan. The story is interesting enough to keep both adults and children engaged. The narrator is also very good. He adds a lot of value to this book. I will likely listen to this a few more times at the least, and this was money well spent!
    A Delightful and Moving Experience
Listening to Peter Pan read by Christopher Cazenove was a delightful and moving experience, a story of exuberant childlike imagination (in which the line between make-believe play and real adventure is blurry) with an undercurrent of painful adult loss. One moment we are laughing at the pathetic pirate Smee, the unlucky Lost Boy Tootles, the conflicted Captain Hook (who can never resolve the dilemma of ???good form???), or the playful narrator (who likes to hint at doom on the horizon or to remind us that we are after all only spectators), the next moment we are sighing at the sadness of Peter Pan???s existence or at the inevitability of maturity and mortality. Wendy and Peter playing at being and almost becoming the parents of the Lost Boys is affectingly humorous and sad, because it is not quite the real thing and because it cannot continue.
Christopher Cazenove???s reading of the book is flawless and engaging (just as is his reading of Howard Pyle???s The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood). He doesn???t need to change his voice dramatically to represent different characters, because his emotional engagement with them is so affecting.
I love Barrie???s fusion of ideal (joyful innocent play) and real (heartless selfishness and forgetfulness) childhood. He channeled his conflicting feelings for children, childhood, parents, and adulthood into a charming and moving classic. If you???ve only ever seen the Disney version of the story, or if you???ve never experienced Peter Pan in any form, I highly recommend this audiobook version of it.

  • Missing Sisters Audiobook by Gregory Maguire

    Title: Missing Sisters
    Author: Gregory Maguire
    Narrator: Angela Goethals
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-09
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 26 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
From best-selling author Gregory Maguire comes a funny, heartrending story of the strength of sisterhood and the struggle to find a family of one's own.
    Editorial Reviews:
Gregory Maguire is best known for writing Wicked, which inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. He also spent time in a Catholic orphanage in his youth, thus he has firsthand knowledge of the setting of Missing Sisters. In this young adult novel, Maguire examines the less-than-charmed life of Alice, a late 1960's orphan with disabilities who loses the companionship of Sister Vincent de Paul, the one person who seems to understand her.
Angela Goethals brings her wealth of experience as a young adult audiobook narrator - as well as an accomplished film and television actress - to the narration. At times touching and at others humorous, Goethals' voice embodies the full spectrum of emotion required of a tragic tale turned triumphant.

    Nothing ever happens
This book feels like a slow beginning of a story that could go somewhere but it never does. Nothing really ever happens in this book the characters don't really grow or endure anything and it ends with a new person showing up and deciding to wrap things up in a nice bow. I don't understand how anyone would think this is worth their time.
A Gentle Breeze takes us back
This book took me on a quiet and unexceptional visit to my own childhood. To a community and time I knew intimately, where everyone had a catholic parish affiliation and upbringing, where we all new the same prayers and relied on them to get us out of trouble, where 12 year olds were still children and parents pulling a car over to spank children was a threat that counted. A life we were all familiar with that had rules and guidelines. It was a life where we were safe from all the scary things we now find in books and on the news, but it was also a real world without easy answers; where dreams didn't come true and where life was controlled by grown ups and rules we never understood.
A story from the past that might only speak to children from that past - but as I am one myself, it was a relaxing read. I wish we could raise children in that world today, but it is a long time gone. I think a lot of us miss it.

    Not Grandma Dowdel but good!
I LOVE Richard Peck- I listen to his works for comfort and entertainment. This one is on the same lines as his "teacher" and "librarian" titles. I was hoping the grandfather in here would be the male equivalent of grandma Dowdel, but he isn't quite. She is unique!

    Still a good adventure
Not quite as funny as the first one, and it included people getting killed. I still like the series and hope #3 is a little better.
    good book
This is a good book. My son and I read books from this series before bed. We enjoyed this book.
    A Exciting Book About Pirates
The Not-So-Jolly Roger by Jon Scieszka is a good book about pirates. The main characters are Sam, Joe and Fred. The story takes place on a pirate ship named Queen Anne's Revenge. The main challenge Sam, Joe and Fred faced was finding the book that took them back in time. The boys were brave, adventurous and smart which helped them get past Blackbeard and find the book. The boys learned that teamwork helps get past scary places. I would recommend this book because it is exciting.
    I liked the book

Five and eleven year old are loving this book!
We are halfway through the book, it is such a wonderful story so far. My two boys (5&11) are eager to continue. My oldest keeps asking if he can read ahead. I love how this book is written, there are lots of great lessons to be learned. I highly recommend this book!
    Wonderful book for many reasons
I recommend this book for its story, cultural accuracy, and high interest action. First it is an exciting story of how conflicts arise and can be resolved with an exciting lacrosse game at the end. How cool is that? But the cultural and historical details make this a fascinating read for all ages. If you want to know about the lives of Native Americans in the New York area, written by a Native American, and put into an historically accurate story, this is a great read. I would recommend this as a high interest type of reader for middle school readers, one that would challenge them as well. The story could be about conflicts today, but the action is naturally more intense. If you are looking for an accurate portrait of Native American life, Bruchac is a wonderful author for you to choose. It is hard to find good books about northeastern Native Americans.
    My son enjoyed the story

We read this as part of Build Your Library 5th grade curriculum. Both my 11 year old son and I really loved it. Bruchac does an excellent job of making an engaging, page-turning tale with many life lessons and historical facts throughout. It was very hard to maintain the schedule in the curriculum as both of us just wanted to keep reading. Five stars, for sure.

    Great (2nd generation reader)
I read this book when I was in 6th grade. The whole class actually read it - I remember it being a huge sensation. I suggested this for my son now that he is in 6th grade. He read it over the summer and also loved it.
It is realistic fiction, ideal for kids like my son who don't find much to like in the current trend of fantasy/dystopian young adult. It is probably more of a younger reading level so it was good for slower readers too mature for books at their reading level, too.
I would not be put off by the subject matter. It is a reality many kids live through and it is good for kids to understand what happens in other lives. When I grew up we had a large foster home down the street. The reality of what I heard from those kids (who became my friends) was far more brutal than anything described in this book.
    Still Relevant and Wonderful
The story of Carley, Harvey, and Thomas J still resonates with children. I read the book aloud to my eight-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl. At one point when I tried to stop reading they shouted at me to continue, so wrapped up in the story that they could not bear to stop. I loved The Pinballs when I was a kid and I am happy to be able to share it with my own children.
    Awesome story
I read this story back when I was a kid in school, and enjoyed it then. Even as an adult I found this book to be just as enjoyable as it was 20 years ago.
I highly recommend this book for all ages---young to adult!

This is a really good book helping children and teens see how adversity can be turned around into a positive. Life is not easy for many children and this book brings three children together who come from very different troubled home situations and turns their lives around as they begin to form a "family" with some wonderful caring foster parents. A good read.
    Nice!
This is a nice story... a bit depressing, yes, with all that bad fathers, and a bit bad mothers, but it is amazing the way the writer puts such a deep deep deep message into words, into this wonderful and amazing story. I hope there is a sequel to the book. Read on.
