Author: Jay Kaplan

Narrator: Aaron Sinn

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs

Language: English

Release date: 02-13-15

Publisher: Green Leaf Publishers

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage

Publisher's Summary:

Could another terrorist attack happen in New York City, and are we ready?

Rat Island explores an attempt by three wily, well-funded terrorists to infiltrate New York City and detonate an explosive device at ground zero on 9/11. After buying a yacht in Venice, they proceed up and down the Adriatic, raising money for their task, and eventually sail to City Island, New York.

Meanwhile a disgruntled Russian atomic scientist buys deadly Polonium 210 to be injected into four missiles, which are then cleverly placed on a freighter in the port of Gdansk. It sails to New York City and meets up with the yacht. Through devious means, the terrorists are able to place these missiles on a vehicle and into a tunnel under the Hudson River.

The good people who are trying to thwart this plot include three former SEALs, one of whom is a vessel examiner with the coast guard auxiliary, and a beautiful undercover Interpol agent aboard the yacht.

Scenes shift from Venice to an area in Poland where Polonium has been buried to a secret laboratory where the bombs are assembled and finally to City Island, New York. The bombs are secreted in an abandoned hospital on a small island - Rat Island - until they are transported to ground zero. The major challenge for the SEALs once they discover that missiles are aboard the yacht is to find out where they are hidden and ultimately where and how the bombs are going to be exploded.

The climax occurs in a tunnel filled with cars. Will the SEALs be able to thwart this terrorist attack?

Fast-paced

Jay Kaplan's "Rat Island" is a thriller/suspense novel about a terrorist plot to detonate a bomb at ground zero. A group of highly trained SEALs is determined to foil the plan, using every tool in their arsenal to figure out everything they can about the plot and defuse it. "Rat Island" is a fast-paced book with each chapter beginning with a place and a time e.g. 12:00 AM, July 23rd, Outside a factory in Gdansk. You really get to see the progress of the terrorists, which builds the tension as the SEALs race to stop them. I loved reading about the various settings. Recommended for anyone who wants to read a thriller about a terrorist plot!

Terrific Read!!!

I was enthralled by this book from beginning to end. It was very well written and the characters were brought to life by this author. It is a sad fact that there are terrible people out there just plotting such atrocities but stories like this give us a little hope that there are also good people out there watching and taking the time to notice little discrepancies that may thwart these horrible plans. Thank you Mr. Kaplan for giving us all just a little hope. I will be recommending this book to all my friends and family and I would like to let all the readers out there in "Amazon land" to come renew your hope and give this book a read.

Skip this one

This was the worst-written book I have read in years. It's awful, do not waste your time on it!

Need new Editor

Worst editing I've seen in a long time. There are so many mistakes that reading the book became annoying.

Excellent Series!!!

I read the 4 books of the series , not in one sitting but in one day, and they were fantastic. The female lead was the best and her mission with the religious aspect in it was great. Of course the ISIS terror was what drew my interest in reading the series. Once I started reading it, it was hard to put down, but didn't put it down for long. The ending is fantastic as causes you to search for the next book, which isn't written yet. And after you realize that you hope the next book comes out soon. Fantastic Work....Keep it up please.

Title: The Blackguards

Author: Richard Murphy, David Niall Wilson

Narrator: Gene Blake

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 2 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-15-15

Publisher: Crossroad Press

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage

Publisher's Summary:

Nick O'Malley has come home from Vietnam but with more questions than answers. His unit, the 173rd Airborne, had orders to close the port of Cam Pha, which should have crippled supply lines and might have ended the war. Instead, just before Nick transferred out, the orders were cancelled. Nick later learns his entire unit was then dropped in behind enemy lines and wiped out. A mistake? Or something darker? With the help of his father and a Chicago journalist, Nick heads back in-country to try to find answers--to the fates of both his unit and the president of the United States.

The Blackguards is a story of politics and big business as Nick races to uncover the truth, facing violence and danger at every turn. The characters are tough Americans up against near-impossible odds, making The Blackguards a relevant, good-versus-evil thriller with just enough facts and reality.

Author's note: I was a sergeant in the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed in Okinawa in 1963. We had orders from President Kennedy to close the port at Cam Pha. The Brigade, for unknown reasons, did not go, and though I survived, the entire unit was wiped out.

Members Reviews:

A great thriller based on a desperate time

If you could sum up The Blackguards in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, sorrowful, interesting

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack was by far the more prominent so stood out

What about Gene Blakes performance did you like?

His ability to cover the wide rage of voice changes and put some excitement into his reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No; but there were a couple places that surprised me.

Any additional comments?

I received this book free of charge in exchange for a review.

At first I did not think the story would be much but it developed well and actually made you believe such a conspiracy was possible. I really enjoyed the story as it developed. There were a couple of technical issues like the digital cameras 30 or 40 years before their actual development but other than that the story line was fairly consistent. That such a plot could be carried out and that the bad guys could have people waiting in so many places without current surveillance technology was a bit of a stretch but still within possibility and kept the reader on edge during the whole book.

Scratching my head

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. The story continuity doesn't work. Nick is shipped home before he is deployed to Vietnam but when he goes to investigate his story he is familiar with his surroundings. Jack, who also has never been there, seems to be a local expert. Right down to knowing the language. The story is set in the 1960's but yet they use digital cameras. Really?

If youve listened to books by Richard Murphy and David Niall Wilson before, how does this one compare?

Have not

Would you be willing to try another one of Gene Blakes performances?

No, it's like listening to Columbo trying to narrate a story. Terribly irritating.

Do you think The Blackguards needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Please no!

Any additional comments?

This story had potential to be riveting but, between the poor performance and the lack of attention to detail, it falls flat on it's face.

Mediocre at best.

Story line was okay but the amount of errors in this book was unbelievable. Does no one proofread anymore? Sad, sad, sad.

Great read

Really like his books, always a good and interesting plot. I always have to keep reading until I have finished the book!

Good Book

This was interesting, mixing politics and passion. Although it did not have all the intrigue of other Wallace books, still it was a good book.

Good fiction. Another beautiful work of

Good fiction.Another beautiful work of Wallace

Not a typical Wallace effort

An immensely disappointing novel, especially from an author like Wallace. The plot was thin. I now know exactly what people refer to when calling characters cardboard- there was little to no character development. And realism? The 6-year old son of Noy speaks of his various classes in school: arithmetic, geography, history- a 6 year old? And he complains how lame one arithmetic class is. Also, President Underwood demands that the secret service not cover him while he confronts "the bad guy". Not to worry- they outfit him with a gun! Not realistic at all, in my opinion.

I've read a number of Wallace's books: The 3 Sirens, The Plot, The Second Lady, and The Almighty. These were excellent, riveting books. Perhaps Wallace was not well at this time, because this novel is a shadow of the others.
