SINGLE & SINGLE
John le Carré
This renowned author is known for his novels of espionage and suspense, departing originally from the Cold War and continuing into an amoral post-Soviet mire of ambition and deceit. The sub-text of his work lies, however, in his mastery of narrative technique, and the creation and revelation of extraordinary characters, generally of subdued personality. They belong in the shadowland of subterfuge, after all.
This book, however, unlike its numerous and prodigious companions, is plodding and obsessive. It deals less with spies and more with finance, curried in relationships, and specifically the complex psyche of the father-son syndrome...or, as the case may be, disorder. And given the authorâs own introduction to this edition, he is writing of himself and the father he abhors, deplores and adores. The poetry of the text is therefore far beyond gritty. It is painful. A towering, tremendous, tremulous son, never more than a neophyte in the world of the law and lawlessness, strives to win the approval and acceptance of a diminutive progenitor known as âTigerâ, who is at once crooked, deceitful and pretentious, and a ridiculous caricature of a sociopathic tycoon in the best clothes, cars, food, women, thus naked to his unhappy offspring, who is powerless to stay his demise.
Can a miniature man produce a gigantic son? Yes. It is not only genetically feasible but a frequent occurrence. Can a miniature man foment gigantic upheaval in his large, otherwise attractive and capable offspring? Yes. The tiny father can, especially with a large personality and the wielding of power, make the full-sized son feel insignificant. Why donât people look in the mirror instead of head-on at their ancestors? Psychiatrists would then be out of business! This is an enthralling book, also heart-rending and pathetic. As we say in Spanish, âhijo de tigre, pintitoâ.
LeCarre never misses
Regardless of how long it has been since you last read leCarre, he never disappoints with excellent story and character construction. His skill stands with the modern mystery storytellers.
Surprising
A good bjy not truly believable. Needed more character development. OK buy not great six more words. Enough for me
Certainly as good as any since Spy Who Came in from the ...
I've read most of le Carre's novels, and this ranks near the top! Certainly as good as any since Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and Tinker, Tailor.
Typical Le Carre - and that means a good spy novel
Although the Cold War has long since faded into the history books, John Le Carre is still turning out good, well-written spy stories.
