In John le Carré's electrifying novel Our Kind of Traitor, innocents abroad are drawn into the darkest recesses of the financial world.
Set in contemporary, recession-gripped Britain, a left-leaning young Oxford academic and his barrister girlfriend take an off-peak holiday on the Caribbean island of Antigua. By seeming chance they bump into a Russian millionaire called Dima who owns a peninsula and a diamond-encrusted gold watch. He also has a tattoo on his right thumb and wants a game of tennis.
What else he wants propels the young lovers on a tortuous journey through Paris to a safe house in the Swiss Alps, to the murkiest cloisters of the City of London and its unholy alliance with Britains Intelligence Establishment.
Critic Reviews:
"If you want to know about the state of Britain today, forget the Booker shortlist. Just read John le Carré's latest thriller." (Evening Standard)

enough room for a sequel
The abrupt book end leaves many loose ends. How were they knitted together? Where did the characters go from there? How did they resolve their individual dilemmas without the head of the family to guide them?
At least six to ten short-stories are left unwritten for the reader to puzzle out for himself. Careful integration of those six short-stories would yield the second volume of a trilogy.
Book three would have to deal with the Russian Mafia in contrast with Putin and the new Russian order. Now comes Ukraine and the diplomatic war that follows which will be built around banking and economic sanctions. This is the new way of foreign policy; Army's are being reduced and money squeeze is an updated diplomatic skill.
Juxtapose money laundering against this new order and you have a follow-on series that would be a wow factor in contemporary literature.
Good storytelling, engaging and interesting.
I wanted to read this book as it is being made into a movie. The storyline is definitely interesting. The pacing was good and most of the characters were fairly well developed though the main couple (Percy and Gail) almost became periphery characters. The most charismatic character was, by far, Dima. Though this was written some years ago, it's still a valid and appropriate story line for the current time.
I would recommend this book. I'd also like to read some of le Carre's other novels.
I have to admit that Le Carre' grates on me at times as he seems to over tell the story and try to make a work of literature out
Le Carre' keeps up the quality and his rather unique ways of telling us the story. In this case it is all about unintended spies who just blunder into the job with characteristic British panache of course. I have to admit that Le Carre' grates on me at times as he seems to over tell the story and try to make a work of literature out of a good spy tale, but be that as it may... By the time we get up to the climax of the story and the denouement we are hooked and won't put it down. The tale of a "zek" who becomes the money washer for the Russian mob is intriguing, as are the manifestations of modern spy-dome with its tendency to betray the people in its web. Stick to it, and you will be rewarded with an fascinating read and a glimpse of what spies are all about.
Breathless, brilliant: the master plays in a minor key
It's a spy novel about an amateur tennis match.
