Eight years later in Little Venice, a group of friends and family gather to view the painting. They are treated instead to a murder....

    More Campion!
This had never been my favorite Allingham but I am thrilled to have more of my favorite series available on Audible. I have always admired the lightheartedness of Margery Allingham's books. They are silly and they know it but they are good fun to read.
The story is well read by Francis Matthews, who is my favorite narrator for the Campion series (I have them all on cassette). I just hope I am not the only one who loves these books and that Audible releases the full collection unabridged. I would love to see the Gyrth Chalice, Beckoning Lady, Traitor's Purse and The China Shepherdess available here.
    Campion turns sleuth
No Lugg in this one! Argh!!! And people refer to Campion as a sleuth, which he'd always denied before, preferring to be called an adventurer and universal uncle. Even though he seems to accept detective status now, this one is hardly a mystery, as the killer is known very quickly. After that, it's just getting evidence. Good, but my least favorite Campion so far.
Matthews brings the characters to life!
The story is complex and interesting. The ending was a bit outrageous, as were several of the characters. I enjoyed the book - not a 'page turner', but it kept my interest. It was the monthly selection for a book club - we are reading various books from this period - seems the different prominent authors of crime stories were satirizing each other. This is a good one!
    Albert Campion - Ghost Buster!
Would you listen to Death of a Ghost again? Why?
Yes it is a gentle but compelling mystery, as the best of Margery Allingham always are, dark in places and yet somehow cosy and comforting. My son used to listen to the tapes as bedtime stories and now thanks to Audible and the Magic of MP3 we both can relive that time all over again even though he is nearly 30 now.
Who was your favorite character and why?
the ghost - a totally fictional artist but such a compellingly drawn rouge that you wish he was real just so you could see his artwork
Have you listened to any of Francis Matthewss other performances? How does this one compare?
Francis Matthews used to do all of the Albert Campion books, and his voice is a perfect match for them, happily satirical but warm and generous to the listener. It is sad that so few of his recordings on this website. the narrators on the other titles, while excellent for other stories, read these Campions too quickly, too sharply, these are cosy armchairs of books, and should be read as such. I advise anyone to get the stories read by him first!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
it is a much more subtle story than that - you tend to have a quiet smile on your face through out. Though it's not a rice pudding of a story, it has some wonderful twists.
    Entertaining
I very much enjoyed this and Francis Matthews performed the story so well. Great listening.

    Title: Uncertain Voyage
    Author: Dorothy Gilman
    Narrator: Alyssa Bresnahan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-12
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 43 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Dorothy Gilman, famous for her best-selling Mrs. Pollifax mysteries, crafts a novel pulsing with international intrigue and psychological drama. Uncertain Voyage is certain to hold you spellbound with its tale of a timid young American woman who finds herself in situations that would test anyones courage.
Melissa Aubrey is touring Europe alone as part of her quest to establish her self-reliance. Still recovering from a nervous breakdown brought on by a disastrous marriage, Melissa is fragile, to say the least. When one of her fellow travelers makes an urgent plea that she deliver a small package to an address in Majorca, Melissa is thrown into a dizzying whirlwind of romance, mystery, and danger.
Narrator Alyssa Bresnahans elegant, expressive voice evokes the artistic young heroines changing states of mind. With her performance you will experience the thrill of adventure in foreign lands right alongside Melissa.
    Members Reviews:
    Sadly, no uncertainty
Painful pre-Pollifax book, not helped by a sentimental performance by Bresnahan. It has the ring of springing from Gilman's own experience, but unalloyed self-searching doesn't make for an engaging book. Maundering interior monologue rehashes, circles, and never seems to end; nothing happens for hours of audio, except an extended and a tedious semi-affair that's mostly a walking tour of Copenhagen; and worst of all, the heroine is a dolt. It's not that I mind silliness in a spy plot, but this one is a practice book for Mrs Pollifax, without any of Mrs Pollifax's charm or modesty. Thank goodness Gilman got over herselfI enjoyed the Pollifax books very much, at least the first four or five, and several of her other books (Incident at Badamya, The Clairvoyant Countess, Kaleidoscope). But don't waste your credit on this one.
    Annoying self talk.
Such an annoying psychological examination of the 'heroine' of herself. It did not move well.
    Don't bother...boring!
The story is extremely slow. Narration is enough to put you to sleep. The narrator is too "whispery". I will finish it just because I don't want to waste my credit.
    slow but good
Not a typical espionage thriller, but a good, introspective book. not action packed. This sounds more negative than i intended, I enjoyed it a lot .
    dark but uplifting.

seemed repetitious in the beginning, but finally I saw the light, just like Michelle. Her strength was uplifting.

    Members Reviews:
    21st Century Arabian Nights
This snappy, issue-aware urban fantasy adventure is the kind of book that Neil Gaiman might have written had he lived in the Middle East. To me, the setting was a breath of fresh air in a genre that could use a little more diversity, and Wilson engages with the intersection between the modern world and the folkloric, spiritual past in a way that has a little more depth and honesty than a typical fantasy novel.
The story, after a prologue set centuries in the past, opens in the present day. Alif, a scrappy, somewhat arrogant young hacker, spends his days helping various dissident and black market groups circumvent the Sauron-like cyber-eye of state security in his unspecified country. When his beautiful upper-class first love jilts him (for reasons that seem particular to that culture), he hits his keyboard and takes petty geek revenge on the young woman. But, like a sorcerer's spell, the program, which may indeed have the mark of otherworldly spirits on its bits and bytes, gets out of control and falls into the wrong hands. The really wrong hands.
However, Alif also manages to acquire an ancient book, that has to do with the lore of the djinn, the supernatural people who still inhabit the world, but are hard to see until one finds true faith. This puts him in touch with some interesting new friends.
The plot, once it unfolds, is a little predictable in its outlines. Of course Alif will eventually fall for the annoyingly devout girl next door. Of course the cantankerous old imam will prove to be a kindly, wise ally. Of course the lore of the djinn will grant Alif superhuman Hollywood hacking powers. Of course the spoiled young prince will find his courage. Of course the bad guy will eventually get his just desserts. But, I liked that these tropes all felt genuinely Middle Eastern in their detail, and had humor. When an Arab Spring-like movement unfolds in the latter part of the novel, Wilson grasps both its hope and its frightening uncertainty.
The novels most intriguing ideas, however, feel less than fully developed. I was curious about the authors vision of Islam as a faith deeper and more sublime than the negative stereotypes most Americans have of it.

Wish I'd gotten the unabridged version
I love any Harlen Coben's book read by Scott Brick so much and can't get enough. I didn't realize that this was an abridged version of the book until I was done listening to it and regretting not getting the unabridged one. I felt that it ended so quickly.
I don't care what anyone else says about Coben's story being far fetched or Scott Brick being over dramatic, I am a huge fan. I keep looking for his books that are narrated by Scott Brick, but there is not enough of them. I wish Scott Brick re-read all his books, because I really don't want his great books to be ruined by not perfect readers.
I would highly recommend this one as any others of this duo.
    Intricate plot
Scott Brick is one of the best readers around. Harlan Coben is unlike many writers who have a standard plot and just change the people and location. His books are each unique and original.
    A short, good, unpredictable mystery.
The narration was on point. I enjoyed the story, especially the ending. I like when I can not tell who done it. Nice job. I like this author, and will read more from em.
    a trashy novel
I hate to write a bad review, especially after all the work that must go into writing a novel. However, when I think of an author writing drivel like this, and an audience that seems to drink it up, I can't help but reflect upon the amount of time and energy that is wasted, and the mental flatulation that is the result.
"Why did the author write this book?" I kept asking myself.
After I was done reading, my conclusion was that: the author wrote this book, because he set out to write a book.
He may have started out with: a murder mystery, a sleazy strip joint and bar, a weak detective, a soccer mom who longs for the seedy underground, and a wrongly convicted man who still blames himself after 17 years of incarceration(huh?).

    A New Hero for me
Would you listen to The Hope Vendetta again? Why?
Absolutely! There is so much to the story, so many unexpected twists and turns, that I'll have to listen to it again just to pick up anything I might have missed. Also I'll listen because I really enjoy the characters, the narrator and the story. It never lags or gets at all boring.
What did you like best about this story?
The main character, Ben Hope. He's a combination of Jack Reacher (though smaller in stature, but just as lethal) with the evasive ingenuity of Jason Bourne. He has integrity, has a strong quiet center and is always ready to protect the innocent. He admits to his character flaws but doesn't let them deter him from what he feels is the right thing to do. Great hero material!
Have you listened to any of James Langtons other performances before? How does this one compare?
I listened to "The Mozart Conspiracy" which I liked very much and which I believe was also narrated by him. He makes the Ben Hope character come alive. He is also excellent at a variety of voices, accents and can do women's and children's voices very well. I look forward to more of his narrations. Beautiful, soft English accent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It as hard to put down, but very long. So, as much as I'd have liked to listen all in one sitting it wasn't possible. However, I could hardly wait to get back to it.
    Any additional comments?
I am impressed with how Scott Mariani was able to keep such a complicated plot together and keep it interesting. Though the subject of religious fanaticism and power hungry deviousness has been done a lot, he manages to bring a some new twists which keep it from being redundant. I hope that the average British reader will not believe that all Americans are "right wing religious fanatics".

    Non-stop action all the way
Would you consider the audio edition of Poison Flower to be better than the print version?
I love audio and I love print. Can't say for sure which is better.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This was definitely a rocket ride from the beginning. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone. Jane starts out moving fast, and never slows down.
What about Joyce Beans performance did you like?
Joyce is very good in this series and she is Jane's voice that I hear in my head when I re-read the stories.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen in one sitting. I'm retired and have the time. I stayed up VERY late. It was worth it.
    Any additional comments?
If you have never read any other Jane Whitefield books, DO NOT START with this one. It brings in characters and situations from earlier books. As a series reader I loved it, but it would not make sense to someone who wasn't.
Start at the beginning with Vanishing Act and come forward.
    Love the Jane Whitefield series!
I have been hooked on the Jane Whitefield book since I read Vanishing Act years ago so was excited to see another addition to the series. The one thing I did not like about Poison Flower was the torture scenes. Not that they did not fit in the story - just that I found them too disturbing to listen to. (If I had been reading rather than listening to the book I would have simply skipped over those parts.)
    Love Jane's Attitude
If you have read the whole series then you will love this one just as much or more.
    Very Graphic
Would you ever listen to anything by Thomas Perry again?
Yes, I love Thomas Perry as an author, but this book was very dark, very graphic in image.
The image and details presented in the torture process was horrible. It is not necessary to go into so much detail.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joyce Bean?
    The narrator was good
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
After you get past the chapters of torture, the book is a typical Thomas Perry novel that keeps you involved in the story.
    Any additional comments?
Don't read this book if you have a weak stomach; the torture details are to graphic, it is not needed for this story. It ruined the book and made me think twice about reading a Thomas PERRY NOVEL AGAIN.
    Perry missed with "Poison Flower"
Would you try another book from Thomas Perry and/or Joyce Bean?
Previous Perry novels kept me in constant suspense; "Poison Flower" plods along with unengaging situations and a very predicable bland climax. Nothing new is revealed about Jane Whitefield's character.

Matthew Reilly make the legend continue !
If you could sum up Scarecrow Returns in three words, what would they be?
The tradition continue ! Cannot put the book down (or in this case the headphone down).
What did you like best about this story?
It is non-stop ... exactly like all the other Matthew Reilly books.
Have you listened to any of Scott Sowerss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Easy to listen ...
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The torture near the end, I was sure the team did lost an other member.

If you have never read a Matthew Reilly, look at the sequence he wrote the books, and read them in the same sequence .... he surprise you at each book.

If you enjoy non-stop action, life & death situations and plenty of high-tech gizmos ... not to mention a very capable little robot, this is the next book for you.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Scarecrow Returns?
The idea that we can put the past behind us, that even sworn-enemies can put aside differences for the greater good ... if only it worked in real life.
Have you listened to any of Scott Sowerss other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my 1st of his.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It helped the continuity as they were racing from room to room on island to island if you could listen in a block.
    Any additional comments?
It was a great listen for a road trip, I just kept finding myself hitting the gas pedal a little too hard. "... honest officer, I wasn't speeding. The Scarcrow just had to get back in time to save Mother and the world!"
    great storytelling
action packed, great characters, cool ending can't wait for a sequel with same villain again.
    What a ride!
Non-stop action, unforseen plot twists, believable and endearing characters, military techno-thriller - maybe even the perfect one. What more could you ask for?!!
Caution: authentic military language and gore.
    pretty rough
    Any additional comments?
Well, it sounded like a great premise. This is a book all about action. Think of the most unbeliveable situation you could be in, then think of the most unbeliveable way out of it. Now you have this book. Seriously, do not waste your money.

    An Entertaining Suspense Thriller!
What did you like best about this story?
The Prey had me intrigued from the opening minutes. There really isn't a dull moment from start to finish. The suspense is chilling. I had a fun time sitting down and listening to Gwen read this book. She did an excellent job bringing this novel alive. I felt she handled the violent scenes with great respect to the author's intentions and the main characters were well defined.
    Good book
Full of suspense. I liked the Narrator pretty well. Absolutely worth the listen. Good love scenes as well.
    Addicting and Thrilling
If you could sum up The Prey in three words, what would they be?
    Addicting and Thrilling
Who was your favorite character and why?
John. I like his hard ass portector personality. Yet he was gentle and caring when it comes to family and love.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When John and Rowan(Lilly) finally realize their true feelings for each other
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The entire book has moved me to purchase another story by Allison Brennan
    Waste of credit
Waste of credit, wait and get it free from the Library. The story is good not one of Allison Brennan best, I believe if she had gone with the narrator from her other novels it would have been a very good story, but this narrator does not do the story line justice, her whinny voice for all the characters just makes me want to delete this from my ipod.
    Romance
This is more of a romance storyline than a mystery adventure storyline. Excellent narrative performance.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alan Groombridge had a fantasy. Husband to a woman he didn't like, father of two children he had never wanted, and manager of the second smallest branch of the Anglian-Victoria bank in the country, Alan was doomed to a life of domestic boredom and tedious routine.
All that saved him was that one fantasy: stealing enough of the bank's money to allow him just one year of freedom -one year in which to live a different sort of life. But one day there was no more dreaming and no more games. The Anglian-Victoria bank was robbed and both manager and cashier disappeared. ln place of the dull and dreary repetition on that had once existed, there came a brutal, chilling nightmare that might never, never end.

    Missing the last chapter!
What did you love best about Make Death Love Me?
Great story, would have been a great ending if chapter 25 had been included in this
    Smooth and mysterious
What made the experience of listening to Make Death Love Me the most enjoyable?
Rendell in her genius style weaves a story of an ordinary man making choices to leave his existing life. It kept me guessing how soon he would be discovered. The other characters rang true to form and did not come across and cliche. Wonderful read.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Make Death Love Me?
His decision to believe he was in love with another woman and their plans to live elsewhere. The new woman knows nothing about the man's life or his crime.
Which character as performed by Ric Jerrom was your favorite?
    aka Paul Browning, protagonist
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no.like to spread the entertainment out
    Flawed humans...
Yes, I have to believe the coincidences to love this. But by the time Rendell asks me to do that, I am so absorbed with every single one of her complex and believable flawed humans that it's easy to do! These are the true "nail-biters" for me-- when real people encounter real situations and make choices while suffering consequences for being true to their flawed selves! I could listen to the narrator for a few more days!
    Make Death Love Me
If you could sum up Make Death Love Me in three words, what would they be?
    Thrilling, moreish and contemplative.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Alan Groombridge - he was a middle-aged man who felt as though his life had been blighted by a series of choices made in his late teens and yearned for something different. His journey towards making this happen is extremely interesting.
What about Ric Jerroms performance did you like?
Ric Jerrom is the most talented actor to voice Rendell books. He has a low, mellow and melodious tone which brings all of the different characters alive.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end - it was very sad indeed.
