Not really a mystery-unique among Campions
Where does The Tiger in the Smoke rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm not answering these questions Audible asks, I'm just writing my review.
SPOILERS IN HERE!! SPOILER ALERT!!! In discussing the book you may think I reveal too much if you don't like to know anything about it!! SPOILERS!!
I have read in discussions of Margery Allingham that this is her masterpiece; it is certainly very different from any of her other books that I have encountered so far. Though there are some mysteries in this book, and a number of murders, it isn't really a murder mystery as I see it. Campion is of course in it, but it's not really about him, either. It seems to me to be a meditation on the second world war, and upon loss and grieving and change and how to accomplish these things well (or poorly). Also, and this grows as the story continues, it seems to be a meditation on the nature of good and evil, and upon what God is and what God isn't and most of all what a person becomes when God is lost to them. It's not surprising that someone who was born in 1904 in England would have thought extensively about these things, and their thinking about those points always speaks deeply to me, even though I was born in 1961 in the United States.
There is a scene in the second half of the book, where Meg's father (a minister of the church) goes deliberately out to talk to the murderer. This action on his part is certainly distressing from a pragmatic point of view, but that's part of the point of the story if the story is more than a murder mystery. He believes that he is called to do so by God in order to offer salvation to the murderer, and what he says to the murderer about the path he (the murderer) is on I found to be greatly moving. I also found the final scenes at Sur la Mer extremely moving for the same reason (though more so the second time I listened to it, because the first time I was too anxious to find out what would happen to think deeply about what Allingham was really trying to say.) This is a book I will listen to more than once, especially the second half, for what Allingham has to say about spirit and loss and redemption and faith, rather than because it's a comforting golden age mystery. It's not a preachy book, but I think it has to be understood from the point of view of a discussion of what's real and what's not, rather than as a simple murder mystery.

    Redaktionelle Rezensionen:

    Publisher's Summary:
Campion investigates once more, but this time he is on the run from the police - classic British crime writing at its best. Celebrated amateur detective Albert Campion awakes in hospital accused of attacking a police officer and suffering from acute amnesia. All he can remember is that he was on a mission of vital importance to His Majesty's government before his accident. On the run from the police and unable to recognise even his faithful servant Lugg or his own fiancée, Campion struggles desperately to put the pieces together while the very fate of England is at stake.
Margery Allingham was born in London in 1904. Her first novel was published when she was seventeen. In 1929 she published The Crime at Black Dudley and introduced the character who was to become the hallmark of her writing - Albert Campion.

    One of Allingham's best
Traitor's Purse may be my favorite Campion novel. Campion himself is such a delightful character. But this is the only one in which he experiences true character development. The device of amnesia forces him to figure nearly everything out with no context and no background, just his wits. It's a very enjoyable read.
    Can't listen to this narrator..
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A different narrator. I can't even finish listening to the book because his voices are so annoying. I'm going to finish the story by reading the hard copy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Traitor's Purse?
Campion's realization of how important Amanda is to him. And the way Albert muddles through with his loss of memory.
What didnt you like about David Thorpes performance?
The various voices he uses. The one he gives to Campion is dreadful. But the others are annoying as well.
    Any additional comments?
I'm going to return it for a refund. I won't be buying anymore Albert Campion books narrated by David Thorpe. That's too bad because I enjoy these stories.
    Campion and Amanda triumph!
For some reason missed this one when listening to the series in order ... now things make a lot more sense! Great story and wonderful adventure as always for Campion and his usual band of characters - loved it!
    Won't download
This is the second Audible narration which will not coordinate
With the book. The first always narrated a different chapter than the one I was reading in the book. This one plays only the sample then stops. Not a good bargain.
    NOTHING CATCHY HERE.
BORING, TO MANY SENARIO,S, AND CHARACTERS. TOOK 2 NIGHTS TO GET THROUGH IT. TRIED THIS BOOK BECAUSE I KINDA LIKED TIGER IN THE SMOKE. BUT ALAS, NOT THIS ONE. NARRATION WAS VERY STIFF AND BORING.

Dont be fooled by the title!
The title, and first 30 minutes of listening may lull you into thinking you've got a cozy little mystery, but do not be fooled! This book moves abruptly into child abuse, madness, kidnapping, murder and many other horrors. The story is compelling, with complex characters and plot twists, but it is often overshadowed by the stilted dialogue. Her characterization of a couple married more than 40 years is awkward and reserved. The author seems to pause the story periodically to stand on various soap-boxes regarding a number of worthy social causes, but they are weird breaks in the story telling and don't serve the book. The narrator uses an artificially low-pitched voice for the main character, making her a bit irritating when the listener should feel sympathetic. She does a far better job with other characters. I'd recommend it for the overall story, but be prepared to overlook some awkward writing.
    I liked it!
the ending was a little predictable but it was a long in depth book with twists and turns.

    Clever, elegant classic British mystery
    Any additional comments?
Author Edmund Crispin writes in a vein similar to Ngaio Marsh---interesting, quirky characters, a murder victim everyone hates, a baffling mystery, and best of all great use of language. It is a sheer total pleasure to bathe in this cascade of vivid writing and witty turns of phrase. The narration of this audiobook is perfect. If you like these mid-20th century British mysteries I think you'll enjoy Swan Song.
An entertaining atmospheric post war novel
I love Edmund Crispin's novels and I am so pleased that Audible has recently brought out new stories. This is very atmospheric and enjoyable. This reader is new to me but I enjoyed his performance very much.
    Good
It was thoroughly enjoyable. A clever plot kept me guessing until the end. Not world shaking but worth reading if you enjoy the light hearted insouciance of Gervase Fenn.
    Excellent nostalgia
Edmund Crispin effortlessly conjures up the feel of post war Britain. The plot, set around the world of Opera, has many twists and turns. Several murders or attempted murders, love and marriage and theatrical tantrums all woven together with skill and some humour. His central character, amateur sleuth and Oxford Don, Finn, untangles it all leaving the reader with an unexpected denouement. A variety of interesting, well drawn characters all add interest. Very gentle and not to all tastes but I thoroughly enjoyed it as I did his other " Finn" mysteries.
    i missed the humour
    Any additional comments?
the story was good and enjoyable and the solution to the murder was unusual but I missed the humour of the previous books.
I have bought the rest of the series and hope the humour is once again present in those stories.

"just a bad MEMORY"~ 5 STAR Linda Howard Thriller
Lizette suddenly is remembering her secret past~
Lizette is very ill and takes a day off work. What she cannot explain is why she does not know her own face. She is awere of having some very interesting hidden "talents" and is aware she is being "monitored" finding some bugs in her home and GPS in her car. She just is not sure WHY. As the cloud of her memory "clears" she is suddenly in danger. Using her HIDDEN TALENTS she flees for her life. Hot on her trail is Black Ops Xavier who has also been monitoring Lizzie and is now her protector. ** SPOILER** DO not read this unless you want to learn the plot*** Lizzie was part of an ultra secret detail of the President and first lady. When a murder happens Lizzie has her memory "erased /wiped" and is given a new life. but the MEMORY WIPE is not perminent as they planned. now someone is out to kill Lizzie to make sure all her memories "die with her". On the run and Xavier hot on her trail has Lizzie eluding both a KILLER and Xavier. This is a first rate plot right down to the killing and cover up. As well as the "memory" erase. Lizzie is one of Howards BEST heroines and Xavier is her match in every way. This one is excellent and one of the better Howard books. I give this one 5 STARS for PLOT, 5 STARS for READER ~ Carrington McDuffie is first rate and holds us following the facinating look the world of Black Ops. EXCELLENT.
Very good will listen to this one again
I always listen/read her books and found this one to have the same 4 star rating. I also enjoy Carrington MacDuffie as a narrator.
    Great
Once again Linda Howard has managed to grab my attention and keep it. It was worth my credit...my last credit. Ms. MacDuffie was simply beautiful. She brought Linda Howard's novel to life.

    So close to being great
I was really into this book. The author did a great job of developing the characters and making me interested in them. The problem for me was that the ending didn't match my expectations from the rest of the book. There is a lot I would like to write about the ending, to explain why it was disappointing to me, but I don't want to spoil it for others. It's also possible the ending will be perfect for certain readers; it just didn't do it for me.
I would still recommend this book to others. McDermid's style of writing was captivating, and the story was fresh, unlike anything else I've read.
    Kept me interested and riveted
An unexpected and unusual storyline. Lots of twists and turns and you'd better pay
attention or you will be 'rewinding' to catch important details. I liked it very much and will be
    reading this author again.
Just when you think you have it figured, you don't
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it has twists and turns and the ultimate turn leaves you going "what!"
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Vanishing Point?
    The last chapter
    Which scene was your favorite?
Probably the abduction, It had the feeling of the raw emotions that were running through the main character.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    As above, the abduction scene.
    Any additional comments?
    Well worth the download.
Great Book except for the last 10 minutes
Great story. Interesting style. Nice twists. In the last 10 minutes this one goes in the toilet. My advice: In the last chapter, once the front door is opened and the characters identified, stop listening. Had I done so this book would get all 5's.
    Excellent
I really enjoyed this book. It was a good story. The narrator was excellent . I could hear every word. I would recommend this book. The ending was most unexpected.

good book narration was not so good
I enjoyed the book. Not one of the best of hers. The narrator was female and her attempt to change her voice to a male's was laughable. It would have been more enjoyable if she had not tried.
Good Book, terrible narrator doing the voice!
What disappointed you about The First Prophet?
I haven't read the entire book, in fact I couldn't even get past the first chapter because the narrator's voice is so annoying. I can't stand it when a female narrator attempts to do a male voice. It would have been much better with a male and female narrating this book. I was looking forward to this because I'm an avid Noah Bishop fan, however, I'm going to have to buy the e-book to get through the entire story.
In the future I'll make sure to stay away from any audiobook with this narrator.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story doesn't need to be changed, good book so far, however, two different narrator's; one male and one female would have been more enjoyable.
What didnt you like about Joyce Beans performance?
Her voice is annoying; especially when she attempts to do a male voice.
What character would you cut from The First Prophet?
    None.
Move along. This one is a real disappointment.
Oh, brother. I forced myself to wait 'til the end of this book to write a review. I kept hoping it would get better and it never did. I have read or listened to many of Kay Hooper's books and have enjoyed them all. This one was ridiculous and I think the narrator made it worse. I don't want to just beat up on the narrator or the story, but I would highly recommend you go find one of Hooper's early books/series and listen to that one. And definitely make sure they are narrated by someone else. If there are more in this series (since Hooper tends to write in groups), I won't buy them, that is for sure.
    Great mystery with paranormal
I enjoyed the plot. Ms. Hooper writes so naturally that it seems normal that most of us would have paranormal gifts. My one issue with the story is that the heroine seems a bit too frightened and naive, over and over again. I don't have to have a strong female lead, but I do believe the shrinking violet is a touch overdone.
I'm not sure if either character will have repeating roles in this series, but I hope so.
Ms. Hooper doesn't disappoint because all of the paranormal books of hers which I've read, have been very easy to suspend belief.
