    Language: English
    Release date: 09-02-14

    Publisher's Summary:
Dennis Lehane returns to the streets of Mystic Riverwith this love story wrapped in a crime story wrapped in a journey of faith - the basis for the major motion picture The Drop, from Fox Searchlight Pictures directed by Michaël Roskam, screenplay by Dennis Lehane, and starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini.
Three days after Christmas, a lonely bartender looking for a reason to live rescues an abused puppy from a trash can and meets a damaged woman looking for something to believe in. As their relationship grows, they cross paths with the Chechen mafia; a man grown dangerous with age and thwarted hopes; two hapless stick-up artists; a very curious cop; and the original owner of the puppy, who wants his dog back.

    THAT IS LIFE,
SOMEBODY COMES ALONG WHEN YOUR NOT LOOKING, NOR EXPECTING
This is a middle of the road listen. It is not awful and it is not great. This is more about the characters then the story. I am a dog lover and the puppy is what kept me listening, even thought the dog is a very minor part of the listen. The characters are a little gritty and offbeat. There are some Chechin bad guys, but nobody is really a good guy, as in most Lehane books. Also like most Lehane books, it is pure Boston (underbelly).
I AM NOT THE ONE WHO WASTED MY WHOLE LIFE WAITING FOR IT TO START.
    Soooooo great
I just listened again, having purchased this 2 years ago, and if possible like it even more than the 5 stars I gave then. Can't give more stars, so will have to write a review.
This book depicts some of the most savage, venal, depraved, avaricious - oh well, all the deadly sins and then some - but somehow Lehane's writing and Frangione's narration turn that mess into a totally enjoyable book. I won't say which part I enjoyed most, but, hint, it had something to do with the dog. And it's sort of an uplifting Christmas story, though the ending was a downer and a cliffhanger (I hate both of those), but at least answered a couple of lingering questions. Looking forward to listening again in a couple more years!
Simple yet tightly knit story grounded in reality
It does read like a script that there is a lot of dialogue between characters, but book is excellent, and I throughly enjoyed it. It is a very focused book on few characters. Author does a great job developing these characters, and I got to know them very well.
Story is simple but powerful rooted in gritty reality that I could see these events could take place in rea life. At times, readers are introduced to either very accomplished tough guys, or naive incompetent ones. This books walks a fine line between these characters which are possibly neither. It made a very interesting read. This is my first Lehane book, but it will not be the last. I highly recommend Lehane.
Narrator did a great job portraying the grittiness of various tough guys. Overall, narrator is able to capture the spirit of the book. Again, I would be looking for other books narrated by from Jim Frangione.
Mr. Lehane is getting better as he ages.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Drop to be better than the print version?
Having not read the print version, I can't say. However, all other things being equal, I always prefer the audiobook, because the performance aspect adds so much to the story that it begins to resemble a movie that is cast in your head. In this case, there actually is a movie of the Drop.

    Title: Dear Daughter
    Author: Elizabeth Little
    Narrator: Bonnie Dennison
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 10 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-31-14
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 284 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
A sensational debut thriller featuring an unforgettable heroine who just might have murdered her mother.
Former "It Girl" Janie Jenkins is acerbic, whip smart, and fresh out of prison. Ten years ago, at the height of her glamour and fame, she was incarcerated for the murder of her mother, a philanthropist best known for her string of rich husbands. Now, released on a technicality, Janie chops off her trademark hair, determined to chase down the one lead she has about her mother's killer. The only problem? Janie doesn't know if she's the one she's looking for.
In an isolated South Dakota town whose secrets rival Janie's own, with the unwitting help of the locals, she pieces together a shocking picture of her mother's supposedly pristine past. On the run from the press, the police, and possibly even a murderer, Janie is forced to choose between the anonymity she craves and the truth she so desperately needs.
A gripping debut novel, Dear Daughter follows every twist and turn as Janie unravels the mystery of what happened the night her mother died - whatever the cost.
    Members Reviews:
Too many witticisms, too little substance
I was looking forward to this novel because of the great reviews it seemed to be getting everywhere. Someone (I think in People magazine) compared it to "Gone Girl" (clearly, someone who had not read Gone Girl).
There is very, very little here except one witty, cutting remark after another from the protagonist. And it gets old very, very quickly--particularly because there is absolutely nothing to back it up: no character development (the main character herself is totally unbelievable and it only gets worse with the slew of secondary people...most never progress past the stereotype); no verisimilitude (The plot is based on this girl's quest for her mother's killer. She's released from prison after serving 10 years for the murder...and immediately follows the most implausible of leads EVER -- and I mean EVER -- and, of course, because this book is awful, the lead pans off); no resolution (you keep waiting for some twist to happen...but, no...it's just one runaway train of a plot); no talent (sorry, Ms. Little).
Perhaps if I had not been expecting so much (or if I was a 16-year-old looking for a very light 'mystery' to read on the beach), I would have given it three stars. As it was, I had to force myself to finish it.
The narrator compounds the issue. I found her voice grating and her never-changing inflection (perhaps unavoidable because she had nothing to work on) makes the lines seem even triter than they are.
Nothing like Gone Girl - A slow painful read
What was most disappointing about Elizabeth Littles story?
I read some reviews that this book was similar to Gone Girl. Whoever said that must have been confused. This was a painful read for me. Too many characters, no in depth story line, and the main character was shallow. Once you get the general story line of this book, that is as far as it goes. I felt like I was waiting for it to get good and it never did. It also seemed like you never really get into the characters which got confusing. I would not recommend this book - it's a very slow and boring read.
Creatively presented, but smacks of Scooby Doo
Lets get this out of the way - there is no one to like in this book.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 43 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Slowly the Czech was becoming animated, but in a muted way, so typical of the man. Maigret now noticed his hands, which were long, surprisingly white, and dotted with freckles. They seemed to reach out and take part in the conversation. 'Let's be clear that it's not your professionalism which I question. If you understand nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, it's because from the very start you've been working with facts which had been falsified.'
Set in the in the atmospheric and squalid streets of Paris, Maigret sets out to prove the innocence of a man condemned to death for a brutal murder. In another one of Maigret's unconventional and audacious plans, he arranges the escape of the condemned man in an attempt to prove his theory. The presumed murderer goes on the run across Paris and its suburbs, dropping misleading clues along the way and leading Maigret into the labyrinthine twists of the mystery. Maigret is in for more than he bargained for, as he encounters rich American expatriates, dangerous foreigners and their hidden motives.
Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

I couldn't stop listening to this story, it beats any Agatha christe strory hands down

Always enjoy this narrator. Plot resolution was disappointing..all that build up for such a quick and rather improbable ending. good thing I love Maigret.

Lieutenant Richard Sharpe and a detachment of riflemen join the assault of a strong French force holding the Holy City of Santiago de Compostela.
Lieutenant Richard Sharpe and a detachment of Riflemen are cut off from the rest of the army and surrounded. Their only hope of escape is to accept the help of the Spanish, but this assistance comes at a price: to join the assault on the holy city of Santiago de Compostela, held by a strong French force. There is little Sharpe would enjoy more.
Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sharpe and his creator are national treasures." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation." (Daily Mail)
"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." (Observer)
"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." (George R.R. Martin)

    Wow
The narration was fantastic, the story was fantastic. Bernard at his best, thoroughly enjoying, rediscovering the books that made me love reading as a kid.
    Fantastic book
I have read the book but listening to audio brought it to life.
Could do house work while reading
    Cornwell genius
I've run out of words to describe Mr Cornwell books. The historical research behind them, the geographical description. but here Sharpe takes his first command, unofficially . One thing I can say, is that tv did not do justice to the series, though it brought me to the books, and yrs of entertaining reading and listening, not just a fan, I'm a sharpes fan.
    rip raring adventure yet again
as usual Bernard Cornwall has done justice to the memory of these brave men. Rupert Farley does a good job of narrating. His French and Spanish accents are really good. It is understandable that Sharpe is and will forever be Sean Bean (and the voice is uncanny) but it's a little disconcerting to find Dave Lister making an appearance . I'm not going to spoil it for you. You're going to have to listen to see who I mean.
    Totally different to TV series.
Excellent book well written by Cornwell totally different to TV series. As usual book better.

    Members Reviews:
The quality of author Russell Blake's work and....
...RC Bray's and Braden Wright's narration justify a larger audiobook audience. The Artemus Black novels are unique and funny suspense novels. The JET series of espionage novels are consistently 5 star.
Another good one from Blake and Bray.
I love RC Bray as a narrator and Russell Blake never lets me down although many of his series start to follow certain patterns. This installment was good but I felt the first two were more suspenseful and better all around. The Roxy-Black witty exchanges felt forced here as does the interactions with Stan, although they can still be funny. I guessed the killer early on in this one as it was pretty obvious to me. The first two books I did not. All in all, worth a listen, but don't spend a full audible credit on this. Get it discounted on Amazon when you buy the kindle version or use the kindle unlimited subscription service.
Off to get the next adventure!
A very enjoyable series. Nothing earth shattering just good old fashioned detective stories with a sense of humor.
Another great installment in the Black series!
I love this series, the characters are quirky and believable. I like to listen to the stories using Audible and I found myself making time to listen whenever I could. Great read!
    Love this narrator!
Would you listen to Black Is the New Black again? Why?
Yes. I love the BLACK series, and listening to the audiobook is even more fun than reading the book.
What other book might you compare Black Is the New Black to and why?
I haven't read other books like the BLACK series.
What does R.C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He makes his voice sound just like I imagined the characters would sound when I read the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I laughed a lot. That's why I read this series.
    Any additional comments?
I have read all of Russell Blake's books. Each series is different, and none of the characters feel repeated. Check out his other audiobooks if you like these.

"This is my favourite Abercrombie book yet" (Patrick Rothfuss)
"Joe Abercrombie is fast becoming my favourite writer. Half a King is a remarkable achievement - thrilling, enthralling, and relentless. The action is frenetic, the characters are as sharp as the blades they wield, and the humour is biting. It's sure to garner him a whole new legion of fans" (Derek Landy)
"Enthralling. An up-all-night read" (Robin Hobb)
"Half a King can be summed up in a single word: Masterpiece" (Myke Cole)
"With eye-popping plot twists and rollicking good action, Half a King is definitely a full adventure" (Rick Riodan)
    Members Reviews:
    Great story. Mediocre reader.
Abercrombie doesn't disappoint. Good story, if a bit rudimentary. The speak is not great. But ok.
    Good Story, OKish performance
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was a good story, and i would like hear the rest of the shattered see novels. Yes time well spent!
Would you be willing to try another one of Ben Elliots performances?
Not really, i thought he was dead pan and missed some of Joe Abercrombies humor
    Perfect
Just love his books. Hope Joe will continue write his dark fantasy with all his fantastic characters from that evil world he has created
Enjoyable start to a new series.
What did you love best about Half a King?
The setting. Abercrombie have created a world that seem slightly more inspired by norse culture and nordic history than the average fantasy book. There are for example hints of parallels to the centralization of power which happened in Scandinavia during the Viking age. Not by any means to the extent of giving anyone a lesson in history, but it makes the book more enjoyable to those who already have an interest in norse history I think.
What did you like best about this story?
The ending. It might be argued that this is a much lighter read than what Abercrombie usually serves and the characters are not quite as strong or memorable as some of the others he have created, but as establishing a new world with new characters for a new series I think it works well.
I gave an extra star for giving the book an ending that creates anticipation of what comes next without making a cliffhanger. Reading George R.R.

    Luke McCallin: determined...talented
While listening to this marvel of historical fiction, I found myself stopping and Googling on several occasions. The struggles in the Balkins has always intriguiged me, especially the focal point of Sarejevo. I have learned more from historical novelists and journalistic memoirs than I could have imagined. There are so many threads of man's inhumanity to man that seem to escape the headlines of history. In the epilogue, McCallin refers to the House of Terror, synonymous with his Pale House and to Jasenovak Prison, whose crimes against humanity rival and surpass those of Auschwiz. The Ustase, given power over this tiny piece of geography are material for nightmares that outdo those of the SS.
Gregor Reinhardt is McCallin's vehicle to guide us through and illustrate places in history that we might never have known existed.
I look forward to Gregor's next journey into the no man's land between loyalty and morality. 2016 I think...
To follow Sarajevo into our present frame of reference I recommend the book 'Love Thy Neighbor: a Story of War' by Peter Maas, which can be found on Audible.com.
In the footsteps of Alan Furst & Philip Kerr
If you could sum up The Pale House in three words, what would they be?
Luke McCallin's second Reinhardt book is better than the first, The Man from Berlin. I'm a big fan of Alan Furst's and Philip Kerr's writing, McCallin is more Kerr than Furst. The narrator works pretty well for the material.
Have you listened to any of John Lees other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
great historical and geographic detail combined
with an intricate story and rollicking action. loved it. the narrator is great. accents on point.
    McCallin writes an intriguing story
My second book by Luke McCallin. In this book it's March 1945 in Sarajevo, two months before the war's end. The German army is in retreat. Into this timeline comes Captain Gregor Reinhardt. You've got the Partisans, who were really the Communists, pushing up from the south, the Croatian bullies who are aligned with the Germans, the Serbians who inhabit Sarajevo for the most part, Muslims from Albania, Bosnia, and other parts to the south, along with the German army. And, it's a big mess where if you aren't fighting you are just trying to survive the war.

    Publisher's Summary:
Attorney Sabre Brown is summoned into Judge Lawrence Mitchell chambers for an ex parte hearing. When the judge attempts to discuss one of her cases, she refuses to listen without proper counsel present.
Later that evening, Judge Mitchell is murdered.
Sabre's shock at his death is only surpassed by an attempt on the life of Dr. Carolina Heller, a psychologist she employs on a regular basis. Sabre now fears for her own life.
Sabre enlists her private eye JP, and they begin to comb and scrutinize her cases, searching for connections between the two crimes. But Sabre's life is in danger from someone much closer to her.
Sabre and JP's roads diverge. While JP infiltrates a twisted world of greed and corruption, Sabre is caught up in a domestic crisis fueled by obsession. As each is forced to fight their own battles, the question soon becomes, can they find a way to save one another?

    They Just keep getting better!
What about Laurel Schroeders performance did you like?
Laurel gives a wonderful performance. I would be more apt to chose a book if narrated by Laurel
    Any additional comments?
When Sabre is called into the judges chambers to speak with the judge alone she knows it's against the code of ethics and requests another lawyers presence. When she attempts to bring in a witness the judge becomes irate and throws her out. Later that night the judge is killed by a hit and run driver.
Sabre's teenage client is accused of murder and Sobs is not sure he is innocent. But it is her duty to defend him anyway. She hits a few bumps along the way.
Reluctant to turn to JP for help because his former wife is staying with him she feels she must do most of the work herself. And with a new man in her life she is a very busy lawyer.
In spite of the light hearted moments and the mystery of the case the author addresses the problem of domestic violence in a real but yet nongraphic way
For me, Teresa Burrell's books are like potato chips, you can't stop with just one. I hope that the author keeps the series coming. I must confess I've got a little crush on JP, and I want my own Bob.
One of the best of the series!
This is Book 5 of the 7 book series. The series does not need to be read in order. The protagonist is Sabre Brown who is an attorney and child advocate in San Diego. The Advocates ExParte has action and suspense as well as interesting personal relationships. Narration is so-so, but a much better narrator handles Books 6 and 7.
    Good story.
Sabre is a child advocate for the courts in San Diego. There are a lot of threads to this story some peripheral, some primary. While it took a bit to get into, it was well worth sticking. This time think children smuggled from Viet Nam for nefarious purposes. Ill try another one or two of this series as I run across them. 3.8 stars.
The Truth will set you free or kill you
Teresa Burrell is truely a children's Advocate. In all 5 of her Advocate books she takes on different legal issues and children's safety issues. Is family togetherness always the best thing for children. She brings stories to light that are a real and present danger to children today.
The Advocates ExParte brings Sabre Brown, Bob and J.P. back together again as Sabre has several cases of great importance at the same time.
