    Publisher's Summary:
Truth in advertising has long been something to ignore, or at least downplay. The role of advertising has been to position and manipulate brands to convince consumers that they're imbued with qualities they don't necessarily possess, or presume to tell them which ones matter. It worked when the brand's voice was the only voice, but with the rise of social media that era is over.
Marketers have focused their messages on entertainment, creating funny or engaging campaigns that win awards but don't always sell products. Consumers determine what's true, and smart companies have realized that every communications medium can and will be used to contribute to those conclusions.
In Tell the Truth, Jonathan Salem Baskin and Sue Unerman look at the content and context of marketing communications. They provide the research of hundreds of companies and in-depth case studies on more than 50 global brands to show us that truthful brands deliver sales, profits, and sustainable relationships. Truth yields true competitive advantage.

True Million Dollar Step by Step Blueprint Here
So, I recently got a hold of 3 of Pete Williams' books (2 of which I will read next) - I JUST finished this first one, "How to turn your million-dollar idea into a reality", and I got so much out of it.
I myself am on my road to millions (and not just money, but also experiences, love, caring, and relationships) - although of course this book talks strictly about money, and how to start from scratch, and turn my idea into a million dollars (and if I'm really doing it right, many millions).
I loved all the different chapters relating to ideas, goals, but the REAL million dollar chapters are the pricing for profit, technical business stuff, effective marketing, and back-end profits.
The only things I had to skip over were the links to the .au/australian (I think) domain names - they relate specifically to Australian-based businesses, so I couldn't use those to my advantage. Although, most countries have the same type of technical business pages and websites, so it should be easy to find, as Pete explains what types of things you need to think about with million dollar ideas and businesses.
Pete is a true leader, and it not only shows in this book, but also his various webinars, videos, other ebooks, and blogs and websites I've seen and heard from him on. Thank you for both the inspiration as well as the step-by-step instruction for making my million dollar idea a reality.
And yes, I'm a real person writing a real review. Thank you again Pete Williams for all that you do!!

If you've ever considered starting a business I rate this book as a must read. Aussie Pete Williams is offers a veritable paper treasure trove of practical ideas. If you're brand new into entrepreneurialism be prepared to be flooded with ideas. If you're a seasoned entrepreneur you won't get off lightly either - I found myself having heaps of "ah-ha" moments and found a stack of websites references especially that I wanted to look at. Pete's story is inspirational, creative and sassy - but the book isn't just about his story "selling" one of Australia's landmarks, it's also about practical, implementable tips and ideas that any business can put into place now.

Ready to transition from a "just" person to a "what if" person!
I recently ordered a mountain of marketing/advertising/design books in hopes of taking my career to another level because I've been in a professional slump lately. I began my career quest with Stefan Mumaw's "Chasing the Monster Idea," and it was a great way to start!
First, I will admit the incriminating fact that I am not much of a reader. I switched my major to design in college because psychology involved too many darn books. That being said, it should mean a lot to know that I had trouble putting this book down, and not because I was stuck to it from simultaneously eating a jelly doughnut. Aside from the fact that Stefan had me cracking up (which he fantastigloriously did), I was applying each "rule" of monster ideas to my own ideas (past and present) as I read, sizing them up as I made my way through the book. And the corporate examples that were given as support were so interesting and inspiring that I would interrupt the highly important baseball game that my husband was watching to tell him all about it. He was thrilled.
I didn't just read this book. I studied it. I took notes. Pages and pages of notes, so I could commit these concepts and questions to memory. I now feel prepared to test my ideas so that at least I know that if they fail, it will be a smart failure. I even got a bit choked up in the last chapter because I came to the conclusion that I have been a "just" person who's terrified of failing for years instead of a "what if" person who realizes that greater risks bring greater rewards. And that needs to change NOW.
    I loved this book!
Stefan's writing style is funny and personable, making the information he presents easy to digest. He takes you through the process that will help you to recognize your own Monster ideas, pulling you into the action using dynamic narrative and relevant, real world examples. The overview given for each example is detailed but if you need more info, corresponding online links are included for most. I plan on incorporating what I've learned from Stefan into my own creative process.

  • Winning Across Global Markets: How Nokia Creates Strategic Advantage in a Fast-Changing World Audiobook by Dan Steinbock

Title: Winning Across Global Markets: How Nokia Creates Strategic Advantage in a Fast-Changing World
    Author: Dan Steinbock
    Narrator: John Allen Nelson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
    Genres: Business, Marketing
    Publisher's Summary:
Lessons for attaining global competitiveness, one market at a time, from international business giant Nokia.... Winning Across Global Markets examines how 145-year-old Nokia grew from a paper mill in Finland to a multinational telecommunications leader. Why are Nokia's lessons critical for other companies and industries? While multinationals based in large countries benefit from inherent advantages - such as a home base that often accounts for 30 to 50 percent of their revenues - multinationals based in smaller countries such as Nokia, enjoy no such competitive edge. Nokia, in fact, generates less than 1% of its revenues in its home base. To such a company, global competitiveness is a matter of life and death. With unparalleled access to Nokia's leadership, Winning Across Global Markets reveals the remarkable story of Nokia's resilience and endurance. Shows how Nokia's flexibility and focus on its people and local markets drive its distinct global approach.
    Members Reviews:
Good View on Global Business Strategy
I enjoyed reading 'Winning Across Global Markets.' The book presents a good overview of the key elements driving a small-country multinational. The author presents a very straight forward (often too straight) view of the various dimensions that lead to Nokia's success including culture, innovation, organization structure, and team-based strategy. It serves as a reasonable history of why Nokia has performed so well to date. As I read the book I kept wondering if the same elements will keep it winning in the hyper-competitive market of converged devices. For example, despite having an R&D lead with tablet computing Nokia apparently became tentative about cannibalizing existing products and therefore did not act aggressively in the market and now must play catch up with Apple.
Overall I appreciate a book that works to describe a non-US centric global view of market interactions. Although the US is the epicenter of wonderful technology developments its quite interesting to read how non-US based companies compete in other parts of the world; and how technology is influencing the 'bottom of the pyramid.'
At times when I read about Nokia's business strategies I would have liked more detail on what their competitors are doing. All too often the author merely states, "Nokia does this...others don't." Since the book is about strategic advantage I would have liked to understand the choices they worked through, how the management team grappled with the trade offs and how they reached their conclusions. That would have given me more insight into their performance and practices (and likely would have been more lively reading) than simply having it described to me in a passive manner after the fact. Nonetheless the author should be commended for being comprehensive about the key elements of Nokia's success and the associated research required to catalog them. It served as a useful primer.
Looking forward, it will be interesting to see how Nokia performs in the next 10 to 20 years, even five. The author makes regular reference to analysts and naysayers counting them out in the past but then they prove the doom saying crowd wrong. With rapid convergence in the tech space and the rise of emerging markets and the shift to a multipolar world its anyone's guess how it will turn out.

    Putting Social to Work
Starting with a real-life and enlightening exchange with is wife, Barry Libert begins to open our eyes to how we must take advantage of everything our new Social Nation has to offer. Libert seems to have written Social Nation so that we all can save the many good things about being in charge of a small company, of being an employee of a Fortune 500 company, of being a customer of the hardware store down the street.
Libert, has managed to write a business book which is truly for any adult, be they an employer, employee, or customer. The book has an excitement to it, due to how Mr. Libert has written at a pace which makes me and others feel that this is the time to fix some of the many things that were so great about American capitalism.
Today, if we did an impromptu interview out on the street, I would bet it would be hard to find customers who felt that the places they shopped actually even knew if they were a customer; and men and women who work in all sorts of buildings and industries would tell us that they have never had a real discussion with their manager or his manager together with other employees. Many would tell us that the "suggestion box," now seen only in movies before the 1970's, has been broken and out of service for the entire time they have worked at their job.
It is true that there have been "scares" about us losing how to really communicate with each other. Think of the television, then the cell phone, and ..... Libert spins no scare tactics in Social Nation. He has the facts. He cuts to the truth. For a number of decades businesses have cared more about assets and cash on hand, "than they did people and their relationships." Well, now, with the Internet and the Web, companies, employees and their clients can regain what made capitalism in the United States so great, we were all part of it. We can be again. Companies can offer clients their own Web sites which would contain information about the products they have purchased, and, the company would offer specials directly to the customer and not through a blaring commercial. This would all be done on an opt in basis, no push advertising. The customer receives a genuine invitation to be a part of that business.
Better yet, as Social Nation points out, employees and employers can start rebuilding, or for most of us, start from scratch, the building of trust, commitment, and loyalty.

    Publisher's Summary:
Although McDonald's tested the McCafe' concept - offering specialty coffee and smoothies - many years before the recession hit, the official launch took place in early 2009. Why? Because they knew that was when Starbucks' market share was most vulnerable. And, in early 2010, McDonald's raked in $420m, not only stealing a staggering amount of business from Starbucks, but applying so much pressure that in 2009, Starbucks closed over 270 locations.
If you want to grow in a slowly recovering economy...a stagnant economy...or even a declining market, your best and only plan is to steal market share from your competitors and to remain reactive to the market's needs. Grab More Market Share will teach professionals how not settle for 1% growth. Ross' research uses rock-solid case studies that teach leaders to leverage the recovery to steal 10-15% market share from competitors.
Ross alerts readers to the fact that they must leverage the culture (the public consciousness) to swing dollars towards their organizations. This same discipline will help professionals predict the next human behavior changes in buying habits.

    One Star
Pretty weak book that really doesn't tell you much. 1st couple of chapters were the best.
    Great book for self-motivators
The author does a great job telling examples on how big business missed opportunities which opened doors for new businesses to take over.
    Read this great book!
Ross Shafer spoke at a conference I recently attended. Besides being the most entertaining speaker I have ever heard, he really opened my eyes to what I need to do to not only keep my business alive but how to actually make it grow. I headed straight to the bookstore so I could learn more. Clearly, the times have changed and the economy is new and different from what it was twenty years ago. Shafer shows readers that consumers' habits have changed right along with the economy, and how businesses can and NEED to respond to this phenomenon. The idea that you need to actively outmaneuver the competition to get your share of a limited market is just smart. After going through the case studies and examples Ross provides in this book, I feel like I have a better understanding of how to go about grabbing some market share. This book is flat out enlightening, so I recommend it to anybody who wants to increase their profit.
    Grab More Market Share
This guy Ross Shafer is a genius. In his book he shows how to grab more market share at a time when most markets are not growing. He thinks years down the road which help companies to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. He identifies trends that most people cannot see. He explains how to spot the next customer revolution and how the customer wants to be treated--not the same old "the customer is always right," but how you need to be concerned with customer urgency. He uses examples of famous, successful companies that have gone bust by not remaining reactive to the market's needs. You can wrangle business away from lazy competitors by reading Grab More Market Share--it has worked for me.
    Grab this book
Don't let the brevity of this book put you off. There are many big ideas in this little book. In addition to the plethora of quick case studies, there are lots of insights you can use in your business.

    Publisher's Summary:
Why businesses should never underestimate the power of place: Today's business leaders are so obsessed with all things global and virtual that they risk neglecting the critical impact of physical place. It's a paradox of the Internet age: now that it's possible for businesses to be everywhere at once, they need to focus on what it means to be one specific place at a time. The best global brands, from IBM to McDonald's, are by design also the leading local brands. For instance, your decision to patronize Starbucks will depend on whether it's the best local coffee shop in your neighborhood, not on how many thousands of global locations it has.
Marketing experts John Quelch and Katherine Jocz offer a new way to think about place in every strategic decision - from how to leverage consumer associations with locations to where to position products on the shelf. They explore case studies such as Nike and The Apple Store, which use place in creative ways. Drawing on a blend of hard data and engaging anecdotes, this audiobook will help any business - from global mega-brands to boutique, small town stores - influence customers more effectively.

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-03-11
    Publisher: Simply Media
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Business, Marketing
    Publisher's Summary:
Social Media is good term for one-on-one communication with customers and a critical emphasis on survival and productive efforts by all organizations - for-profit, non-profit, educational, governmental, and unions. Marketers have long done this with ads, coupons, in-store discounts, premiums, and other such things. Now many are drilling down and capturing names, email addresses, and individual information.
This audiobook emphasizes how to empower customers and potential customers to reach out to your organization in a two-way dialogue, much like the old Greek Marketplace, where people talked one-on-one and shared ideas that they were passed along.
Social Media emphasizes best practices, how to listen until it hurts, and how to modify one's perspective and that of your organization. From social media, for example, publisher Simply Magazine learned to feature audiobooks versus software, lecture length versus longer length (except in fiction), and to emphasize subject matter such as self-development and health that customers want. Simply Magazine also learned to price high enough for value and low enough for impulse buying.
Social Media makes an important point: let the customer lead you by listening closely, daily, and adjusting as you learn more. Best practices include asking "What does the customer want?" Are you providing it? Are you getting out of the way, so the customer can get what they want?
