A directionless desert, devoid of interest.
Any book that is described a a bit of Graham Greene, Thomas Pynchon and the Coen brothers has to be a winner, right? Alas, in this case, no. There's a real sense of the Emperor's new clothes in the few professional reviews of this book. All agree that is a masterpiece of a book, yet none really put their finger on why. I suspect that's because they, like me, had absolutely no idea what was going on. I'm pretty sure that was Herrnorf's intention - a story that really ends up being whatever the reader imagines it to be. The strength of it may lie in its symbolism, or its various philosophical discourses, but that was evidently beyond me just as it was the reviewers.
Such as it is, it opens with a killing spree at a hippy commune somewhere in the North African desert in 1972. Three policeman are sent to recapture the (escaped) perpetrator, a one Amadou Amadou, but are also later warned not to try too hard. This initial plot really disappears and the bulk of the narrative is thereafter reserved for 'Carl', who apparently is being pursued by various factions and has lost his memory (he takes the name from a label in his clothes). Carl bounces from one bizarre situation to another, largely in tandem with mysterious blonde cosmetic saleswoman and karate expert Helen. Along the way, characters come and go, for no other reason that to further obfuscate the story, and Carl never really gets anywhere near whatever 'truth' there is.
I read a review that said the first 100 pages are incomprehensible, but after Helen meets Carl, it starts to make sense. Well, it doesn't. It's like the closing sequence to the Benny Hill show, everyone running rings around everyone else, and nothing ever getting resolved.
It is darkly comic throughout and it does appeal to my black humour (though the final paragraph is a genuine kick in the gut), and I stuck with it expecting all these strands to come together in a blaze of narrative genius. However, it didn't. I'm not entirely sure what I just read, to be honest, but whatever it was, I felt like I just wasted my time.

    Publisher's Summary:
"For Christ sake dont become a fluffmeister," are the last words Barnaby Griswold gets from his father. But despite trying to turn out otherwise, Barnaby knows himself a fool and already makes his living as a fluffmeister, as a puffer-up of investments. Well-bred, more or less educated, friendly to everyone, Barnaby is in fact foolishly successful. Until he blows it all.
At 46, disgraced and broke and lonely, Barnaby must repair his life. Maybe, just maybe, hell find out that doing the foolish thing can lead to redemption.
Book Lust Rediscoveries is a series devoted to reprinting some of the best (and now out of print) novels originally published from 1960 to 2000. Each book is personally selected by NPR commentator and Book Lust author Nancy Pearl and includes an introduction by her, as well as discussion questions for book groups and a list of recommended further reading.

    When the wave breaks.
Yeah, Barnaby, Chapter One, is not a guy I would admire as a friend. He is narcissistic, superficial, without any real substance, but with a dangerously poor sense of ethical behavior. He is an arrogant hip shooter and almost pridefully detached from anything but making a buck. There is a bit of the ambush predator about him and his ploys. No one likes him for his core person, only for what he brings. A big part of what he brings is a disruption of order and the high risk capitalists he runs with seem to love that pandemonium that Barnaby brings. If they know it is coming they believe they can jump on the "wave" and ride the moment over the less well informed, outsiders and the uninitiated. Wee Haa! He is very successful while he is in the club.
But then...oh yeah, then he falls off the wave and gets beaten teachable. Not beaten wise, remorseful, redeemed or even likable. He is beaten until he can no longer be cocky. He cannot be extravagantly wealthy or haughty. He has to dig in and just be.
That is when the story gets going. It is written in a slightly constrained flow of conscientiousness style. It has some of the qualities of well known picaresque fiction but falls just short of the mark. I felt the style, while occasionally jarring was realistic. When you are fully stressed ideas and plans, with little assessment of consequences shoot around your brain one after the other.
I am not going to give any spoilers but the last part of the novel included how he redeemed himself. It also shows that redemption is not an single eureka moment. It is laboriously built brick by brick, scar by bruise, over time. There may be an aha moment, but it is the result of the hard redemptive work done by he who seeks redemption.
I believe Barnaby had an eureka event when he returned to his empty home at Christmas. Walking through the home with no one there, the gifts open but still under the tree; the kensian feel gave him the impetus to mentally restructure, maybe re-prioritize his life.
He did achieve redemption. Will it last, can he sustain his redemption? We do not know and is probably unimportant. We leave him a better, wiser, poorer man and in the process he has attained some self awareness.
I like this book. It is not a light read and you cannot be superficial in the attention you devote to Fool.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a hot summer Texas afternoon, Cindy Nance introduces young Doug Hoover to the two great secrets of life. Doug likes the first secret a lot. The second, that guys grow up and go to work, doesn't appeal to him at all. A series of meaningless marriages and do-nothing jobs prove Cindy was right. Turned off by the present, Doug tries to recapture the joys of his past: Captain Marvel and cinnamon squares, Dr. Pepper and window-peeking fun.
Nothing goes right until Doug meets Sue Jean, the culmination of a lifetime enchantment with mean-eyed Southern girls, his all-time carhop queen. Reality takes a hard right and never slows down. Doug, Sue Jean, and listeners who can hang on tight are swept through an indescribable romp that gives new meaning to life, death, and roadside romance.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Hereafter Gang is a posthumous fantasy. Like similar work by a wide variety of writers, from Vladimir Nabokov to Flann O'Brien, from John Crowley to Gene Wolfe, it tells of a hero who, after the death of the body, must sift through the materials of the life he has left in order to make sense of his naked soul.... It is one of the great American novels." (The Washington Post)
"A remarkable piece of work...that keeps the glamour of the novel screaming ahead at a high quantum level all the way through. The Hereafter Gang is the charm of the author's voice. Barrett knows how to write economically and evocatively.... His characters are earthy, bawdy, sensual, and dimensional. In other words, they live." (Locus)
"Barrett has an ear for the bedlam din of urban Texas, and a storytelling voice which deposes matters of great subtlety with great shouts, and an exuberance which glows in the dark, and he's hilarious." (John Clute)

    Whimsical and Poignant
Would you listen to The Hereafter Gang again? Why?
I would. There are a lot of levels to this story, and the narrators voice captures the characters and the laid back pacing perfectly.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Probably Sue Jean. Particularly after you get the entire story of the characters and come to realize why she acts as she does in the earlier segments of the story.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I believe it would involve fighter planes and Jesus, but if I was to explain that, it would ruin an important part of the story.
If you could rename The Hereafter Gang, what would you call it?
    Roundup at the Drive-Inn Corral
    Any additional comments?
This is the sort of slow-burning story that sticks with you. When you listen, you get drawn in - you feel like you know all of the characters, and as it gets stranger and stranger, it happens subtly so that nothing strikes you as off-kilter until...it is. I would recommend this book to anyone, though there is some adult content that would be inappropriate for teen listeners.
    fulgar
What disappointed you about The Hereafter Gang?
I could not tolerate the language or content to listen to the entire first chapter.
What could Neal Barrett have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    ...
How could the performance have been better?
    ...
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disgust
    Any additional comments?
I, unfortunately, mixed up the reviews between Hereafter & Unveiled. last time.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jennifer Stevensons debut novel starts with Raedawn Somershoe, who lives in a trailer on the banks of the Fox River. She likes men and men like her. It runs in the family: her mother, Gelia, can seduce a man just by walking across a road. When they set their sights on a man, something magical happens.
Alexander Caebeau drives a bucketloader for a construction company. Hes lonely, homesick, tired of cutting down trees and putting up ugly buildings. He dreams of going back to the Bahamas, but when Alexander meets Raedawn Somershoe, something magical happens.
Raedawn has just lost her lover. Her mother is keeping secrets from her. Her childhood sweetheart has come home and is looking for answers. Riverfront developers want Rae and her family gone. She may just be falling in love with Alexander Caebeau. And the Fox River is beginning to rise.... Something magical is about to happen.
    Critic Reviews:
"This just absolutely rocks. Its lyrical, its weird, and its sexy in a very funky way. Trash Sex Magic is full of people you would maybe be afraid to meet in real life, but once youve met them fictionally you are damn sorry you cant at least have a beer with them." (Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Travelers Wife)
"Stevensons first novel is at once sexy, beautifully written, and passing strange." (Publishers Weekly)
"Its not often you get characters like those that appear in Jennifer Stevensons Trash Sex Magic. Even if you remove the oddities like the underground huts and the tree fucking, Stevenson presents men and women who feel entirely new to literature, and theyre so good you have to wonder why theyve been missing. Its so refreshing to read a fantasy book that doesnt read like it bows down to Tolkien, a book with a message that doesnt sound preachy. Trash Sex Magic is Stevensons first novel, and it will be exciting to see what she comes up with next." (Bookslut)
    Members Reviews:
    Magical Not-So-Realism . . .
. . . and that's just fine. This is my kind of escapist literature, which is scary, edgy, and disturbing in a charming way. "Trash Sex Magic" literally flirts with the reader. One minute you are laughing at the classic trailer trash speech patterns and environment (you can almost smell and touch it) and the next minute you are squirming in your chair because - well, the sex is magically hot. The characters are simple - until they are not, and you can't help but root for them (even the rather evil ones). Inanimate objects come to life, tree spirits merge with human spirits, there is even a strong environmental message stuffed between the "sheets". Enjoy this confection, page by delicious page.
    Sublime fantasy
This is without doubt one of the most original books I have read. It is very beautifully written and certainly took me to a place I have never been. It continues to haunt me weeks after I completed it. I can't recommend it highly enough. It manages to synthesize elements of fanatsy, horror, reality and sensuality in a way that leaves you overwhelmed at the beauty of the world. And one thing is for certain-you will never, never look at a tree in the same way again!
    What writing!
This is a book to make you remember why you love books. Stevenson writes as if she's never read one, her insights and imagery are startlingly fresh, making you shake your head and see -- and feel -- the world a bit more clearly.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ten-year-old Judith McPherson is a believer. She sees the world with the clear Eyes of Faith. Where others might see rubbish, Judith finds possibility and traces of the divine.
But at school, Judiths difference marks her only for persecution at the hands of her classmates. And lately, even at home she struggles to find connection in a house filled with relics of a mother shes never known. To escape, Judith makes things in the Land of Decoration, a model in miniature of the Promised Land made of collected scraps. Piece by piece, the world in her room mirrors the town outside: a discarded shoelace is a garden hose, an orange peel a slide. But in the Land of Decoration, nothing is what it once was, and nothing is quite as it seems.
As ominous forces disrupt the monotonous everyday - a strike threatens her fathers factory job, and the taunting at school slips into dangerous territory - Judith makes a miracle in the Land of Decoration that solidifies her blossoming convictions. She is Gods chosen instrument. But such a gift is difficult to control, its origins uncertain, and its consequences may threaten the very foundations of Judiths world.
A debut as intimate and original as it is electrifying, The Land of Decoration casts startling light on how far one extraordinary young girl will go to protect the people she loves most.
    Members Reviews:
An amazing novel, an amazing narrator
If you could sum up The Land of Decoration in three words, what would they be?
    A psychological crucible.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Land of Decoration?
Judith's description of our place in the universe (it involves the Eiffel Tower).
    Which scene was your favorite?
The most delicious fish and chips I never ate!
If you could rename The Land of Decoration, what would you call it?
    Let's keep the title.
    Any additional comments?
An astounding book and a perfect performance by Kate Harbour.
    Tragic, sad, well written.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. It was a beautiful book that made me sad. I think the writing was probably one of the more beautifully written novels I have read in a long time. The metaphors, though difficult to believe a 10 year old would come up with them, were so visual and visceral and really well written and thought out.
Would you be willing to try another book from Grace McCleen? Why or why not?
Yes, as I said, the book was one of most beautifully written things I've ever read.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Hm...probably the final few scenes. From when Judith awakes on the floor until the end. I can't say more because it would give away the ending of the book, which I will not do.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
That's a tough question. Probably. But I think it would be very very difficult to capture the interior thoughts of this tragic little girl in a film version. So much relied on her thoughts...her inner most secrets...
    Any additional comments?
the book was beautifully written. the words were beautiful. the descriptions were lovely. reading this book was like stepping into another world, one that was so electric and vibrant and alive around me. however, the fact that it was narrated by a 10 year old gave me difficulty -- because of the metaphors that inhabited every single page -- they just didn't seam 10 year old to me.
