Title: Fun with Problems

Subtitle: Stories

Author: Robert Stone

Narrator: David Colacci

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 21 mins

Language: English

Release date: 02-04-10

Publisher: Tantor Audio

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 14 votes

Genres: Fiction, Literary

Publisher's Summary:

In Fun with Problems, Robert Stone demonstrates once again that he is "one of our greatest living writers" (Los Angeles Times). The pieces in this new volume vary greatly in length - some are almost novellas, others no more than a page - but all share the signature blend of longing, violence, black humor, sex, and drugs that has helped Stone illuminate the dark corners of the human soul.

Entire lives are laid out with remarkable precision, in captivating prose: a screenwriter carries on a decades-long affair with a beautiful actress, whose descent into addiction he can neither turn from nor share; a bored husband picks up a mysterious woman only to find that his ego has led him woefully astray; a world-beating Silicon Valley executive receives an unwelcome guest at his mansion in the hills; a scuba dive guides uneasy newlyweds to a point of no return.

Fun with Problems showcases Stone's great gift: to pinpoint and make real the impulses - by turns violently coercive and quietly seductive - that cause us to conceal, reveal, and betray our very selves.

Editorial Reviews:

The characters in novelist Robert Stone's latest collection of short stories are depraved, depressed, and debauched, struggling just as much with their vices as their own dark souls. The people who populate Fun With Problems the reckless journalist, the lonely husband, the freebasing actress, the self-destructive professor are beyond redemption, barreling toward an abyss from which they can't or won't stop themselves. This here is heavy stuff.

Narrating is David Colacci, a gruff-voiced orator whose brusque delivery gives these tales of addiction, infidelity, and hopelessness an emotional urgency. The risk here is that Colacci could veer into hokey, sentimental territory, sympathizing with the characters in a way Stone doesn't intend. But Colacci's interpretation is spot-on, oozing with the venomous contempt these characters feel toward themselves and those around them. In "High Wire", the longest (and best) of the eight stories, about the long-term relationship between two addicts, Colacci is particularly heartbreaking, his voice and cadence perfectly reflecting a junkie's sad descent: "We would embrace. Sometimes we would hold each other, as chaste as Hansel and Gretel, to show we cared. We hoped we cared."

This isn't to say the book, clocking in at just over six hours, is an unpleasant experience, though at times it makes for an uncomfortable one. As much as the characters can be unlikeable and their actions unconscionable, they aren't entirely hard to relate to. They may represent the bleaker sides of humanity, but they still come across as, well, human. This as much due to Colacci's forceful yet wistful portrayal as it is to Stone's poignant storytelling.

Critic Reviews:

Stone's evocative prose treads through the murky waters of dead dreams and waning hopes, bringing out the pathetic and nasty side of people warped by addiction, sex, violence and time. (Publishers Weekly)

great book for listening

I'm not much of a fan of the audio book experience so far. But this is a great book for this format. The stories are done well and work great for audio in the short story format.

In The Fall of a Sparrow, Robert Hellenga offers us insights into the emotional lives of both men and women, Italian cuisine, and reintroduces us to the world's great literary classics, with time with time out for some hot licks on a National Steel Guitar. The Fall of the Sparrow is filled with humor and mischief, and pleasure despite its somber subject. This is a rich and unforgettable story about embracing life in the face of loss.

Top 5 Favorites of All Time

I can't believe Robert Hellenga isn't more renowned as an author. This book is incredible. The way he layers in Greek Mythology, music, and sex is intriguing. I can't nail down why I love it, I just do. I've read 2 of his other books (The Sixteen Pleasures and Philosophy Made Simple) and this one is his best of the three in my opinion. I recently met someone who attended the school he teaches at and though she is an avid reader she had not heard of him...this is sacrilege! I hope more people discover this book!

The Best Novel I Have Read in Many Years

I cannot write too much because there are not enough words or appropriate words to describe the book or its effect on me. Many layers of story, of meaning. Every character complex and sympathetic. It has stayed with me and I find myself re-reading it,not wanting to let go of the world he has bestowed on us. It has been many years since weeping openly while reading. At the end my heart was simultaneously broken and whole. If I go on I will reduce it to nothing. Just read it.

I savored this book like a fine wine.

Beyond the author's skillful use of language and the color of Italy, the love Woody feels for his daughters is refreshing. His reawakening to the basicpleasures of his life, namely his music, desires, and cooking, pave the path for his rebirth to a new and fulfilling life. I read this book slowly, taking the time to visualize both the settings and the emotions. One of the best books I read this year.

The Best Novel by One of the Best Novelists

Hellenga's second of three novels(he must have too heavy a class load at Knox) rings so true that it is hard to put down even though it is a difficult read. Exquisite passages like the one describing the purchase of a too expensive guitar are meant to be read over and over. I would guess that even a non-teacher could feel the protagonist's joy in his profession and anyone with a family can share the anguish as his disintegrates.

It has been many years since I discovered a novelist I enjoyed this much.

I could not put it down!

I loved this novel more than 16 Pleasures, and that was a marvelous book. There is so much pathos in this story. And the writing-- ah! -- vivid. Hellenga is a master storyteller.

Review is in English and Deutsch. 'Playing For Pizza', (the U.S. title).

English:

If you liked John Grisham's 'Bleachers', you'll like this one. I've read it several times, as I did 'Bleachers.' Also, I have the Audio-Book version, and have listened to it literally over fifty times. Seriously, 50. The protagonist, Rick Dockery, is so... Human and vulnerable, while being aloof and quick witted, and remains relatable you cannot help but root for him.

Deutsch:
