entering the bizarre world of Dark Horizons

With his novel The Child Thief, Dan Smith took us to the snowy forest regions of the Ukraine, chasing an unknown who stole a village child. With this novel, Dark Horizons, Mr.Smith takes us to the hot and sultry jungles of Sumatra. Alex, back-packing by himself, wakes up at the side of the road after his bus crashes to find an "angel" hovering over him. This angel is a pretty female by the name of Domino who comes to visit him in a Sumatran hospital. She persuades Alex to leave the hospital and come with her on the "adventure of his life." Needless to say, Alex, having lost all of his belongings to a thief, and hanging on to his passport for dear life, decides to follow Domino into the jungle to meet with her friends. These friends, as Alex soon finds out, are not the kind of friends you would want. He joins their commune and soon realizes that unless he complies with their requests and demands without asking any questions, his life is in 100 percent danger. Whom can he trust? Is Domino the friend he initially thought she was? Can he trust Helene, to whom he is soon attracted? How can he escape their confines and return to a normal existence? The cast of female and male characters, plus the locale, makes this a winner of a book. Dan Smith has a natural way of writing and draws the reader into the action. You certainly will not go wrong if you buy this book and see how Alex fares!

So I thought this book would be at least good. It was not

Ok so this book was written by the same author who wrote The Child Thief, which was incredible. So I thought this book would be at least good. It was not. Very predictable and the ultimate 'gotcha' was not that exciting. If you're looking for a light read and haven't read the Child Thief yet, I guess it might entertain. Or, you can just read the Child Thief and forget this one......

Easy listen

This was a book following several generations of an interesting family. There were some good themes but the story fell short. It was pretty shallow and the characters were flat and quickly became boring. In the end, I had a story to listen to. Actually mistakenly came upon it while looking for the WWII story by the same name.

Ruskin Bond rocks but Ninestars Information Technologies Ltd. clearly doesn't

The book is amazing and as innocent and pure as any Ruskin Bond book you'll find. But the guys who have translated it into the Kindle edition (Ninestars Information Technologies Ltd.) have done an amazingly bad job. The first alphabet of every chapter is not aligned and there are some spelling mistakes as well. I wish somebody else had made the Kindle edition instead of Ninestars Information Technologies Ltd.

I totally recommend the book but see if you can lay your hands on a Kindle edition that has been made by anyone other than Ninestars Information Technologies Ltd. because these guys suck big time or better still buy the paperback version.

Wonderful read

Love the way Ruskin bond portrays the life of the village girl around the blue umbrella. The narrative carried us to the valleys of himalayas.Thanks for the wonderful story

A glass of lemonade enoyed in the hot Texas sun

Read this book with a cool glass of lemonade at your side. This book develops at a leisurely pace under the hot, dry West Texas sun. Dee returns home to care for her injured mother, and we travel with her on the journey across the sere landscapes of her farm and her heart, and watch as the rains come to revitalize both. The author never takes a cheap shot, never goes for the violent or sensational, but rather allows this very real, flawed woman to come to terms with her mother, her lover, and her daughter. She sees with unflinching eyes her repetition of the family patterns of undemonstrative, restrained, or denied affection and the withering effect this has on the growth of the child's own heart.

I especially enjoyed the research and writing process of Dee's own book, and the flowering of the West Texas writers, and I was grateful for the well-crafted paragraphs, the excellent phrases and unsentimental observations. While the male characters are not fully realized, especially Max, the women fairly shimmer with life on the page. This book is ideal for book clubs as well as for readers who enjoy a beautifully written story of growing up at forty.

A Trip to Texas

Reading The Paragraph Ranch felt like a trip back home to Texas! I loved all the Texas-isms used by the authors to add color and humor to the story -- fixin' to, which means I'm about to do something; and bob war, which is Texan for barbed wire, just to name two examples.

I especially enjoyed getting to know Dee, the youngest of three siblings (divorced, with a college-age daughter) who has returned to rural West Texas to take charge of her mother's health care ... temporarily. The challenges she faces will resonate with so many women in the "sandwich" generation. Her mother Alice is a hoot!

I'm looking forward to reading Book Two in the series: A Wedding at the Paragraph Ranch

Something for Every Reader

The Paragraph Ranch indeed has something to offer every reader. Evenly divided into twenty-four chaptersâlike two cartons of farm fresh eggs--TPR feels like a multigenre novel: part creative-writing text, part family saga, and part cozy mystery. Whew! Thatâs a lot to expect of just one book, but Brannon and Ellington have created one that seizes your attention from the first paragraph (heh heh) and never lets you go.

Thirty-something Dee Barnett-Kaufmann, native Texan, is called back to her home from North Carolina, where she teaches literature at Walter Raleigh College.

Boring, boring, boring

The author may have received accolades for this book, but I found it extremely hard to read. The main character was colourless, and the story was colourless. Nothing seemed to be achieved. I read this as it was on my book club list and it was not enjoyed by any of the other book clubbers either (10 of us in the club). Other reviewers I know have given The Memory Artist good reviews, but unfortunately I can't recall any part of this book which would alter my opinion.

Hard to read

I didn't enjoy this book. Too abstract and hatd to continue to read.

A haunting, beautifully written novel, unputdownable towards the end.

âThe Memory Artistâ opens in 1999, when Pasha Ivanov (the narrator) learns of the death of his mother. Pasha is a Russian writer, a child of dissidents who grew up in the 1960s in a small Moscow apartment where his parents and their friends gathered. Members of this group were determined to find out and circulate information about the ruthless repressions which had continued under successive governments long after Stalinâs death. Millions of people had been murdered, placed in mental institutions, exiled to remote gulags or had simply disappeared. Pashaâs mother and her friends campaigned for the release of political prisoners. And Pasha remembers the âshiny mint-green Latvian radio that was moved to the table for those gatheringsâ.

âThe emergence of memory seemed to me like a warped wound, with a welt or bruise that had arrived inexplicably late. â

Pasha is in his early twenties when Mikhail Gorbachev comes to power in the 1980s. With glasnost providing the promise of increased openness about the activities of government institutions, Pasha wants to write a book about the stories of killings and oppression he had heard while growing up. He particularly wants to write of those who were forced to undergo treatment in the mental institutions. While many Russians want to forget this period, Pasha believes that the past needs to be acknowledged.

In the 1990s, when the USSR has disintegrated and become the Russian Federation, Pasha is living in St Petersburg. He is teaching Russian to foreigners, but has made no progress with his book. He is seemingly overwhelmed by the past: unable to forget it or leave it behind, unable to treat it the way he thinks he should. In the meantime, his own life is stalled.
