Publisher's Summary:
An inspiring and astounding look at the extraordinary courage and contribution of Australian nurses and medics during the Vietnam War.
From the best-selling author of Bush Nurses and Nurses of the Outback comes this collection of compelling and moving stories of our heroic nurses in the Vietnam War.
Being a nurse always requires a cool head, a steady hand and an open heart. But if you're working in a war zone, the challenges are much harder. When Australia joined the Vietnam War, civilian and military nurses were there to save lives and comfort the wounded. With spirit and good humour, they worked hard and held strong, even though most of them were completely unprepared for the war before they landed in the middle of it. Working incredibly long hours and surrounded by chaos and turmoil, these brave nurses and medics were integral to our war effort.
These 15 stories show a side to the Vietnam War that has received little recognition but played an important part in shaping Australia's presence in the war. From flying with critically wounded Australian soldiers out of turbulent war zones to being held at gunpoint, the compassion, courage and grace under fire in Our Vietnam Nurses will inspire and astound.

Different perspective of the war. It was interesting, ...
Different perspective of the war.
It was interesting, but I found the writing was mostly factual chronological and could have brought the characters more to life.
Still worth the read
Every Australian should read this book
A series of clear personal accounts of the Vietnam War form an often forgotten perspective. Hard to put down and I can't see me forgetting these recollections any time soon.
Excellent read
Australian governments should be ashamed of the way our civilian and armed forces nursing staff where treated after returning from Vietnam.
Four Stars
Great read! Love the nurses!
The Amazing Australian Nurses Who Braved and Saved in Vietnam
Australia's participation in the Vietnam War as an ally of the United States involved medical as well as substantial military support by land sea and air. In the USA, apart from veterans who encountered the Australians in the war zone, few here know of this commitment to honor its membership of the ANZUS Treaty and the SEATO alliance. Beginning with military advisors in 1962 to expanding to a full Task Force by a decade later, Australians demonstrated the highest standards of efficiency, courage and effectiveness wherever they were deployed.
For more than fifty years, the extraordinary role of Australian nursing teams has been largely overlooked. This book tells the stories of the exceptional Australian nurses and medics who cared for casualties of the war. Mostly in their twenties, and largely unexposed to the kinds of massive trauma they would encounter in the battle zones, these young Australians cared for wounded countrymen, Americans and local Vietnamese with remarkable professionalism, endurance and courage.
There are American veterans alive today because of the care of these nurses, in field and base hospitals in Vietnam, and on the long range medical transports flown by USAF, with Australian nurses caring for patients onboard, on their way back home to the States.
Annabelle Brayley travelled throughout Australia (the size of contiguous United States) interviewing nurses and veterans to write this important history.
