    Title: The Best of Friends
    Subtitle: Martha and Me
    Author: Mariana Pasternak
    Narrator: Karen Saltus
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-16-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
Set in a world of luxury and power, this is the tell-all story of two remarkable women and a friendship that changed both their lives forever.
For more than two decades, Mariana Pasternak and Martha Stewart were nearly inseparable. They first met over a garden gate in Westport, Connecticut - two suburban wives wedded to successful men but with grand aspirations of their own. Their bond only deepened after their marriages ended in divorce. Struggling as a single mother, but drawn into a seductive world of privilege and adventure, Pasternak watched with admiration as her friend built an empire that would make her one of the richest women in America.
A European émigré with sophisticated tastes, Pasternak helped to smooth Stewarts rough edges, while Stewart drew Pasternak into a rarefied world, where together they navigated the sometimes hilarious and often difficult challenges of being single. The depth of their friendship not only benefited them both but also influenced how they defined themselves, through good times and bad.
Friendship between women is never simple, and this one was no exception. With Stewarts new-found success and Pasternaks zest for adventure, the two womens developing friendship was based on their mutual quest for wonder and discovery. They rode horses through the desert dunes of Egypt, hiked the winding Inca Trail to the mysterious Machu Picchu, paddled at night in dugout canoes through the Amazonian jungle. They toasted the good life with thin-stemmed champagne glasses and sipped jade dew green tea in Marthas Turkey Hill kitchen. This was no ordinary life.
Over time, money, men, and the arrogance of wealth frayed the bonds they had built so carefully for over 20 years. The final break came when Pasternak was called as a witness in the high-profile trial that brought about Stewarts conviction and prison sentence.
Pasternaks deeply personal memoir tells the story of their friendship with honesty and candor, reflecting on the power of such intense relationships to change our lives, and the devastating aftermath when they end.

    Martyr
This woman lives in a fantasy world. She drones on and on about what a wonderful person she is and what a wonderful friend she was to Martha. She refers to "moguls" and "celebrities" but never divulges their names. This book was a self-fulfilling and selfish attempt to make herself look good. The only positive is that it allows the reader some insight into Martha's lifestyle and the people she has shared her life with. I became ANGRY many times while listening to this pathetic martyr.
    Is she kidding ?
Holy Cow....talk about being glued to someones hip & being afraid to speak up for fear of losing a 'friendship'.
Mariana Pasternak overlooked despicable traits in her' friend' Martha Stewart because she so enjoyed the life she was living. The whole thing made me ill.
This life of privilege and snobbery and feeling entitled, and constantly excusing it all to come back for more.OH MY. From the ridiculous relishing of drinking tea from special tea leaves to buying up houses and the fancy schmancy parties. So self absorbed.
The reader, while her voice was lovely, only made all of it so much more nauseating.

Title: Star: How Warren Beatty Seduced America
    Author: Peter Biskind
    Narrator: David Drummond
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 23 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 27 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
Famously a playboy, Warren Beatty has also been one of the most ambitious and successful stars in Hollywood. Several Beatty films have passed the test of time, from Bonnie and Clyde (which confirmed for him the importance of controlling the projects he was involved in) to Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait, Reds (for which he won the best director Oscar), Bugsy, and Bulworth.
Few filmgoers realize that along with Orson Welles, Beatty is the only person ever nominated for four Academy Awards for a single film - and unlike Welles, Beatty did it twice, with Heaven Can Wait and Reds. Peter Biskind shows how Beatty used star power, commercial success, savvy, and charm to bend Hollywood moguls to his will, establishing an unprecedented level of independence while still working within the studio system.
Beatty's private life has been the subject of gossip for decades, and Star confirms his status as Hollywood's leading man in the bedroom, describing his affairs with Joan Collins, Natalie Wood, Leslie Caron, Julie Christie, Michelle Phillips, Diane Keaton, and Madonna, among many others.
Throughout his career, Beatty has demonstrated a fascination for politics. He was influential in the 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns of Gary Hart. It was said of Hart and Beatty that each wanted to be the other, and Biskind shows that there was considerable truth in that wry observation. As recently as a few years ago, Beatty was speaking out about California politics and contemplating a run for governor.
Biskind explains how Beatty exercised unique control, often hiring screenwriters out of his own pocket (and frequently collaborating with them), producing, directing, and acting in his own films, becoming an auteur before anyone in Hollywood knew what the word meant. He was arguably one of the most successful and creative figures in Hollywood during the second half of the 20th century, and in this fascinating biography, Warren Beatty comes to life - complete with excesses and achievement.
    Critic Reviews:
"A complicated portrait of a complicated man." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Lackluster listening
This is more a history of the various films that Beatty created. It provides little insight into the man or his character.
    This is very dull
At the end of the first part of the three parts, I was mildly amused. As a young man, Beatty was quite a character. The author
says this about Beatty: he is vain, mean, holds up productions, spoiled, treats people badly, screws every woman he ever met, etc. I began to wonder why Beatty hadn't been shot. The author tediously goes through each movie Beatty has been involved with and discusses each of the behaviors mentioned above. Over and over and over. I was disappointed because I thought this was an authorized bio. It was not. It's really not too good. The sources are also very dated, but the author doesn't mention that so it sounds/reads as if these people quoted were recently interviewed. Don't spend your credits on this

    Title: Runway RunAway
Subtitle: A Backstage Pass to Fashion, Romance & Rock 'n' Roll

    Narrator: Lorelei Shellist
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 1 min

    Publisher: Big Happy Family, LLC
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
From the streets of Los Angeles, as a teenage runaway waitressing at The House of Pies, to the catwalks of Paris, working as a model/muse to Chanel, YSL, and Christian LaCroix, Lorelei Shellist has led a life full of gritty and glamorous extremes. This is her story, a memoir that, on the surface, may seem all glitz and glam, but whose beauty runs deep - an every woman's quest for strength, hope, happiness, understanding and inner-peace.
Rebellious, headstrong, independent and on her own at 15, Lorelei dreamed of being a model. She made that happen through determination and serendipity; a chance meeting with a '70s Southern California rock star opened the A-list Hollywood doors to a wondrous world, as well as a full-blown romance. Pounding the pavement in L.A. and New York taught her the hard knocks of being a working-class model. Fortitude and sheer will jetted her off to Europe, and there she met the doomed love her life, fiancé Steve Clark of Def Leppard. Theirs was a relationship mired in dizzying highs and bottomless lows, as she watched Steve drink and drug himself to death, and caught herself in the wake of his spiraling cycle of addiction and depression, unable to help.
Ultimately fleeing and finding the strength to save herself, Lorelei now shares the candid and blatant truth of how she survived the greatest loss in her life, as well as the aftermath and her determination to not only survive, but to heal herself and help to heal others.

Thank you for a wonderful tale
What made the experience of listening to Runway RunAway the most enjoyable?
What I found most enjoyable was hearing about Lorelei's climb to success and, of course, her relationship with one of my guitar heroes, Steve Clark.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character has to be Steve but the insight Lorelei gives into their lives is what truly makes the latter part of the book the most compelling and enjoyable.
What aspect of Lorelei Shellists performance would you have changed?
The fact that it was her telling her own story made it seem that much more real. My first complaint (and it could be hardware related on my part) was the skips and breaks that popped in occasionally. My second was the mix of the between chapter music. It overwhelmed the chapter titles often making them hard to understand.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was nearly in tears by the end of the book. I've loved Steve Clark's and Def Leppard's music since I was in jr. high back in the 80's. To hear how he spiraled so out of control was heart-wrenching. Even worse was hearing how much damage he did to those that loved him, especially "Martha". It's a shame, a real shame, he never saw how much he had and how much he deserved it.
    Any additional comments?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lorelei, for sharing such a wonderful tale. Not only were the stories with Steve compelling, but your life before Steve had me almost equally enthralled.

Never too old or too young for tender love.
A Daddy loving by doing makes this book one I hug, and my students into middle school did, too. I used it with my beginning ESOL students who could read/sing finding delight and fluency. They haven't "met" Elvis Presley yet but they have felt the affection between the father and daughter. I especially liked that golf was included in their activities. The new generation which received my latest gift of this book will be tickled that there are golfers in this book anyway. Most of my dearest stories have dated activities-not this one. Bravo! I think I have now purchased for school and family about 20 copies since the book first came out. That's new for me.
    Missing CD
Disappointed that CD was not included or that back cover was permanently wrinkled. Reading pages were in good shape.
    Five Stars
    Love anything Elvis verntouching.
Great book to share with little ones
Love the book. Bought it for my granddaughter who is expecting her first child in June. I've been an Elvis fan all my life and my children/grandchildren are to. I was disappointed to find that the CD had been ripped out of the back of the book.
    Just BEAUTIFUL
Illustrator, Tom Browning, puts a new twist on an ELVIS classic love song. Never before has this song meant anything other than a dedication from a lover to another. But now, this book brings to life in a unique way the emotional bond between a father and his daughter.
Rich colors and sweet, sensitive facial expressions bring the lyrics to life in an extraordinary way as we see the many ways a father shares special moments with his daughter, from ice skating, feeding ducks on a pond, bundling up in the fall breeze, and blowing out birthday candles on a special cake.
Share this one with your little one, your father, or your grandfather. An absolute TREASURE of a book. And the cd of the Elvis is even included in the back!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I was looking for an audiobook that captured the essence that MJ was. This book was the opposite; just a long list of cold, hard facts.
Has Michael Jackson turned you off from other books in this genre?
I'm of the opinion that most books on MJ are people milking the cash cow. What a shame.
Michael Truly Was The King Of Pop!!!
Even if you're not a music fan, you were probably aware of Michael Jackson's musical greatest. Sure he was weird and eccentric, but I think that added to the mystic and the genius.
I've been a music lover all of my life, so I grew up on Michael Jackson music. It's sad that his life came to such a quick end (much of it he brought on himself), but his music will live on forever!

    Title: Bud
    Subtitle: A Life
    Author: Charles Bud Tingwell
    Narrator: Charles Bud Tingwell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-07-09
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
Tingwell's career has spanned over 50 years, from glamorous post-war Hollywood, to London in the swinging 60s, to some of Australia's favourite film and stage productions. That a man can star in two films as widely separated by time and distance as The Desert Rats (1953) and The Castle (1997) is surely a sign of extraordinary longevity and talent.
Yet there is much, much more to Bud than his long list of acting credits. Before he ever established himself as an actor, he served in Europe and North Africa in World War II as a fighter pilot with the RAAF. But above all he is Bud the family man, a loving husband and father. He writes frankly of coping with the death of his beloved wife, Audrey, and of how he was to find comfort in his work. This is Bud's story - as wise, funny, captivating and endearing as the man himself.
    Critic Reviews:
"A tender, quiet challenge to the salacious big-noting typical of the showbiz memoir....impossible to resist; one succumbs willingly to its modesty and candour." (Sydney Morning Herald)
    Members Reviews:
    A great Aussie
This a a good story read by a Aussie acting icon who has had a fascinating life. He talks of many old actors that could be lost on under 30s or those unfamiliar with early Australian TV. Otherwise well read in the brilliant famous voice of Bud.
    Bud: A bloomin' good read
The generosity of Bud Tingwell is burned into Melbourne history. His acting, directing and advocacy of the Arts is part of our cultural milieu. Bud offers (in his resonate tone) in this exquisite narrative an up-close-and-personal with a truly enjoyable lilt. From his childhood memories of his grandmother's advice, "that's just people being human" through to his work with the D-generation in "Charlie the Wonder dog" and the "Castle", his warmth and his signature "good will" is in every page. If you miss Bud - this will remind you of why - and reinforce his place in your heart.

What would have made Anything Goes! better?
Delivery was rushed and garbled, and his stories weren't told with context or flair. I really liked "My Remarkable Journey" so go with that one.
Nothing to do with the Title
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
the title suggests that Larry is going to summarize the wisdom that he got from all the successful people he interviewed . which would have been an amazing book to listen to.instead i got a simple reciting of some historical incidences , some are totally useless others entertaining but definitely not educational . mix in some self grandiosity temper it with some self deprecation and u get a book ? this was a great disappointment
What was most disappointing about Larry Kings story?
so not represented in the title
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Larry King?
    he is a good narrator

Comedian Richard Lewis' distinct voice enhances the charm of his performance as he speaks with longtime friend Keith Olberman, former host of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olberman on his family, particularly his relationship with his mother, and politics, including his thoughts on the Iraq War, using his incisive wit as a magnifying lens.
