"Stardom is only a byproduct of acting. I don't think being a movie star is a good enough reason for existing." (Natalie Wood)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Few actresses have ever gotten the kind of career start that Natalie Wood did during the 1950s. After appearing in film and on TV as a child, Wood broke out by appearing in the classic Rebel Without a Cause alongside James Dean in 1955, despite the fact she was still just 15 years old. She earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for that role, one of three Academy Award nominations she would rack up before the age of 25. That included starring in Splendor in the Grass (1961), West Side Story (1961), and Gypsy (1962). Altogether, she was in over 50 films.
Given that she was a successful actress for several decades, it's no surprise that Wood generated a lot of press during her career, and her personal life in particular was tabloid fodder. When she married star actor Robert Wagner, they had one of Hollywood's most famous and most successful marriages. But Wood was also notorious for relying on psychoanalysts, to the extent that she would become heavily reliant on constantly having access to one.
People were also caught by surprise when Wood retired after the birth of her daughter in 1970, and unfortunately, that has contributed to the fact that she is best remembered today for her mysterious drowning in 1981.

Robert Wagner - Devoted Widow or a Fortunate OJ Simpson?
This 59 page summary of a great actress, which includes discussions of her various movies, is well written.
I especially appreciated the discussion about 25 percent through the book. Acting with Bette Davis in The Star, 1952, we see clearly that the then 14-year old had a deep-seated fear of the water. I can't help but see that she must have had dreams or other premonitions of her eventual demise.
As have many others, I've long had this uneasy feeling that Robert Wagner got away with murder. What really gets in my mind now, after having learned the cause of Wagner-Woods first divorce was her finding Wagner in a compromising position with another man, is that, possibly, she found him again in such a state with the other man...
American Legends: The Life of Natalie Wood is a good buy.
    Natalie, why?
I have always wondered the same things about her death as it was a well known fact that she hated water. I'm glad they have finally looked into the matter again. Of course, the details will never make the light of day but at least the looked! She was the best and even though she had problems, who doesn't, she was the best. I really enjoyed reading this and remembering those times. Rest in peace, wonderful lady. She's with the truly great now.
No Surprises for Natalie's Fans Here...
Having been a fan of Natalie Wood's and read many books on her life, I was slightly dissappointed in this thin paperback which basically recounts many details of her life and tragically early mysterious death.

Title: American Legends: The Life of Farrah Fawcett
    Author: Charles River Editors
    Narrator: Tom McElroy
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-12-15
    Publisher: Charles River Editors
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Celebrity Bios
    Publisher's Summary:
"TV had much more impact back in the '70s than it does today. Charlie's Angels got huge numbers every week - nothing really dominates the television landscape like that today. Now there are so many channels and so many more shows it's hard for anything to get the audience, or amount of attention, that Charlie's Angels got. Farrah was a major TV star when the medium was clearly dominant." - Larry King
The sensation that Farrah Fawcett caused in the 1970s can be confirmed by the fact that TIME magazine designated her as the "epitome of '70s glamour". Indeed, there was no actress or supermodel that so comprehensively captured the attention of the American public during that decade. Her career accomplishments are remarkable, considering Fawcett did not emerge into the cultural spotlight until halfway through the decade. Whereas most famous celebrities earn a reputation for themselves by their mid-20s, Fawcett did not become a household name until 1977, when she was already 30 years of age. In other words, when Farrah became famous, she defied the odds, and her continued success in subsequent decades demonstrated that women could stay glamorous well into middle age.
To limit the accomplishments of Farrah Fawcett to her glamour is to diminish the cultural importance of her appearance, to ignore the significant role she played with regard to the representation of women in popular American media.
In an effort to do justice to the intricacies of Fawcett's image, this biography explores Farrah's body of work, with attention paid to the distinct interpretations of her oeuvre and public image. Fawcett's personal background also is discussed, as is her bout with cancer that ultimately took her life at the premature age of 62.

Title: British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Laurence Olivier

    Publisher's Summary:
"If I wasn't an actor, I think I'd have gone mad. You have to have extra voltage, some extra temperament to reach certain heights. Art is a little bit larger than life - it's an exhalation of life and I think you probably need a little touch of madness." (Laurence Olivier)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' British Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of Britain's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Of all the great actors of the 20th century, none personifies acting royalty more than Laurence Olivier. Some of this is simply due to the fact that he was actually knighted in 1947, along with a lengthy list of other honors that include being named a life peer in 1970 and admission to the Order of Merit in 1984. To speak of The Right Honourable Lord Laurence Olivier is not a figure of speech but rather a fact.
Of course in addition to the literal sense of the term, there is undeniably a manner in which Laurence Olivier qualifies as acting royalty. It is not for nothing that Spencer Tracy once referred to Olivier as "the greatest actor in the English-speaking world". It is also important to note that Tracy refers to Olivier not as a film or theater actor specifically because much of Olivier's lofty standing derives from his ability to successfully navigate different mediums like stage, film, and television. The breadth of mediums in which he worked, the various roles he inhabited within them (actor, producer, director), and the formidable time span of his career lend Olivier's career a scope of perhaps unmatched magnitude.

I had never read about Laurence Olivier before. I have always admired his acting abilities; so it was interesting to see what made him the actor he was.
    Beautiful man, dedicated actor.
A great actor and handsome too. I first saw him in Rebecca and then had to go back to watch Wuthering Heigts.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go so much further than people with vastly superior talent." - Sophia Loren
Among all the stars in Hollywood, there are few alive who have achieved as iconic a status as Sophia Loren. A stunning beauty whose career started because of an appearance in a beauty pageant in Italy Sophia quickly ascended to the top of the profession. Loren has won every kind of major award, from an Oscar to a Golden Globe, and she has too many lifetime achievements to count. Loren is the only living actress who made the American Film Institute's list as one of the Top 50 actresses of the 20th century, and as one of just 13 on the list born outside the U.S., she is unquestionably Italy's most acclaimed and famous actresses.
Born in Italy in 1934, Loren's family wasn't well to do, and she came of age during World War II, and being in Italy, her family constantly had to deal with Allied bombing campaigns. In fact, one bombing raid left Loren injured by shrapnel as she attempted to reach shelter. She would later note, "The facts of life are that a child who has seen war cannot be compared with a child who doesn't know what war is except from television."

    Chronological Listing
This book on A great actress is a chronological account of the making and fate of Sophia Loren's films. It is a hurried text, I.e. The desire to just get the job over. Beginning usually with quotes from Loren's sayings /writing, the text is edgy. It leaves one looking for some more research on the proclaimed sex symbol who has been a great actress and a family lady thinking positive as well as the film genres she acted in. The professional aspect needs more meat to its story.
    A Nice Overview
This biography presents a nice walk through Loren's life, providing some context, but not much depth. Loren is a very interesting figure, whose life has taken some unusual turns. There were a number of events and circumstances described or more accurately 'touched on', and that were intriguing enough for me to want to delve a little deeper- not in this particular book, though. I would consider it to be a well-written introduction to the actress, and in that sense, it whets the appetite for more.
Sex symbol or just a beautiful woman?
I've never really understood what made Sophia Loren a sex symbol. True, she is a beautiful woman and a very good actress, but is that all it takes? This is a very amended version of her biography, touching only on the highlights of her life and career. Still, it's a good read for that long train ride into work.
    Not bad!
A short but precise bio of a well known Italian screen gem of great beauty
While her best days as an actress are over - the text offers insights into her childhood, upbringing & career
The story is compelling & sprinkled with interesting anecdotes
    San Diego
I was looking for more personal information about Sophia as a person. If you are looking to find out more about her career this book will be for you.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Career is too pompous a word. It was a job, and I have always felt privileged to be paid for what I love doing." - Barbara Stanwyck
In the 1940s, film noir was at its peak, and Hollywood was churning out dark, mysterious, exotic and erotic classics like The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not, which helped turn some of the industry's sultry actresses into superstars. In 1944, the premiere femme fatale was Barbara Stanwyck, who was the highest paid woman in America that year, thanks to roles in films like Double Indemnity (1944), in which she uses her persuasive powers to convince a man to commit murder. That film would earn Stanwyck the first of her four Academy Award nominations. After a nearly 60-year career in acting, the American Film Institute would recognize her as the 11th greatest female screen legend of the 20th century.
If anything, Stanwyck's reputation for being a femme fatale obscured the fact that she played strong women that made her seem modern instead of traditional, and not just in noir films. Her versatility also led to roles in all kinds of genres, including Westerns and traditional dramas, but that should come as no surprise, because she was legendary around Hollywood for being a consummate professional that everyone on set loved to work with. Frank Capra noted, "She was destined to be beloved by all directors, actors, crews and extras. In a Hollywood popularity contest she would win first prize hands down."

Great audiobook about a classic star!
What did you love best about American Legends: The Life of Barbara Stanwyck?
I'm a big fan of classic movies on TCM and so I've seen many of Barbara Stanwyck's pictures. I also love audiobooks. I recently bought one about Walter Cronkite and enjoyed the narrator. So when I looked up other books by the same narrator I was delighted to find that he had done one about Stanwyck. I ordered it immediately and was not disappointed.
What did you like best about this story?
The audiobook was revealing about her life and I discovered a number of her movies that I want to see.
Have you listened to any of Charles McKibbens other performances before? How does this one compare?
As I've mentioned before. I liked the Cronkite book read by Charles McKibben but Stanwyck's life was much more colorful.
    Any additional comments?
I hope this narrator will do more on this series of American Legends.

"I wasn't born an actress. Events just made me one." (Jean Harlow)
When the American Film Institute ranked its top 50 screen legends of the 20th century, many of the people named had careers spanning several decades, but one of them managed the feat despite living less than three decades. Ranked as the 22nd greatest actress of the 20th century, Jean Harlow was on the screen for less than 10 years, but in that time the "blonde bombshell" became the most popular actress of the 1930s, eclipsing superstars like Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer along the way. In fact the platinum blonde accomplished that feat as a leading lady for just five years before her premature death of renal failure at just 26 years old.
Although Harlow is remembered today more for her tragic fate than for her career, she was influential well beyond the 1930s. Despite being so young, she managed to craft a persona as a seductive femme fatale that would critically shape how subsequent actresses approached similar roles. Of course her platinum-blonde hair served as a template for future blonde bombshells like Marilyn Monroe, who actually watched Harlow's movies and studied her performances to model her own early career off the dead legend.

Subject matter is a 5 star. the booh? 1 star. like 8 pages long. Fooled me.
    Very Disappaonted

Disappointed. Expected more about her personal life.
    Just the facts
This book was a little different from others about Harlow, but for those interested in the highlights of her life, it was informative. There was so much more to the woman, but this book touched on the main aspects.

From the day television existed as an entertainment medium, giant companies have battled each other for viewers. In the history of television programming, no show was as consistently excellent in the ratings as The Ed Sullivan Show, a variety show that brought on all kinds of acts, from dancers to artists and singers. It was the longest-running show to maintain one time slot, and today it is widely remembered for introducing the nation to the likes of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. When Elvis was on the show in 1956, over 82% of the nation's entire television audience tuned in, a rating that would make even the Super Bowl blush. Indeed, being booked on The Ed Sullivan Show became so important for performers that Aretha Franklin once noted, "And I was booked once to go on Ed Sullivan and I got bumped, and ran out the back door crying."

Perhaps no actor has been able to retain their popularity into old age as well as Sean Connery. Despite retiring in 2006, Connery remains a venerable figure who continues to receive accolades for his handsome virility and status within the Hollywood elite. After all, in 1989, just shy of his 60th birthday, Connery was feted by People magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive, and in the years that followed, Connery was awarded with even more lifetime achievement awards, including being named Sexiest Man of the Century by People magazine in 1999. As an actor, Connery won an Academy Award for his performance in The Untouchables (1989), and he has been awarded Golden Globe and BAFTA awards as well. Based on these designations, one can reasonably place Connery among the ranks of the most acclaimed Hollywood actors of all time, a figure whose critical reputation only grew as he matured.
Considering his personal acclaim as an actor, it is perhaps surprising that despite his status, most of the films in which Connery has appeared are not particularly acclaimed. Indeed, scanning his filmography, viewers finds very few films that have been showered with any significant awards, and even the role that brought Connery to fame, the James Bond franchise, initially received a largely lukewarm critical reception.

    BRUSQUE BOND
Most of us know Sean Connery only as Bond, James Bond. Because I have three children who were once addicted to the Disney Channel I've heard him sing on "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", though both my husband and I wondered if it was really him singing.
And because I love science fiction I know the folks at Paramount tried to entice the man to appear as the villain in Star Trek 5 by naming his domain Sha-ka-ri.
But I knew nothing of his early home life. Possibly the info was available on the internet, but it was so nice to have it bundled up in one place for me.
And I didnt know he was in the military, or that he got his first role because he'd been lifting weights and had a body.
I didn't know a certain Mr. Caine was his friend, though it's always good to have friends who can help you.
The books available from Charles River Editors always surprise me.

If people were asked to list the pros and cons of being a star in Hollywood, there's a good chance that Gene Tierney lived all of the highs and lows they could come up with. In many ways, Tierney had the prototypical career of an actress who experienced the best that Hollywood had to offer, and she got caught up with some of its most notorious pitfalls.
With beauty queen looks, once she was discovered, Tierney was almost immediately marked for success as an actress. After just a year on Broadway, she was making her film debut around her 20th birthday. But once she seemed to be on the road to instant fame, her early career faltered. All the while, she felt pressure to look her best, which included a strict diet to maintain her weight. In an attempt to lower her voice, which she complained sounded like "an angry Minnie Mouse", she also became a heavy smoker.
Tierney was a major star in her 20s, was one of World War II's most notable pinups, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress by the age of 25, but life off the screen continued to cause her problems.

"It's said that Chaplin wanted you to like him, but Keaton didn't care. I think he cared, but was too proud to ask. His films avoid the pathos and sentiment of the Chaplin pictures, and usually feature a jaunty young man who sees an objective and goes for it in the face of the most daunting obstacles. Buster survives tornados, waterfalls, avalanches of boulders, and falls from great heights, and never pauses to take a bow: He has his eye on his goal. And his movies, seen as a group, are like a sustained act of optimism in the face of adversity; surprising, how without asking, he earns our admiration and tenderness." - Roger Ebert

In the 1920s, the burgeoning movie industry was starting to come into its own. Alongside actor and director Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton was at the peak of Hollywood. It's no surprise that Keaton was so effective in silent films. He had been practicing comedy in his family's vaudeville acts as "The Little Boy Who Can't Be Damaged", and became a popular performer by the age of five. Indeed, his physical form of comedy, which initially involved having his father throw him around the stage, translated well onto the screen. Some of his slapstick and other comic gags remain legendary even today, in part because Keaton practiced his own stunts. In fact, Keaton wrote his own material, and was a crucial comic influence on acts like The Marx Brothers and The Three Stooges.
