Real Delight

One of my favorite movies is Fat City which I feel has never received proper recognition as a real movie masterpiece, so that is why I wanted to listen to this book. It was a true delight. I did not know about Keach's extensive stage career or his classical training. Now I wish I could see him on stage in King Lear. There is no self pity or whining in this book. He is frank about bad choices he made, but the overall picture is of an actor who has enjoyed his profession to the fullest. I would bet that his career has been more fulfilling due to his desire to embrace all opportunities to work than many others who are bitter about not becoming big stars.

Definitely recommend the audiobook over paper.

Would you listen to All in All again? Why?

Keach's childhood struggles and Broadway tales alone make this earnest and entertaining memoir worthy of one's time, never mind the stories including Gregory Peck, Orson Welles, John Huston, Rod Steiger and Laurence Olivier, among other legends! And, regarding the origins of the pencil test...I'm speechless. Highly recommended to anybody who enjoys reading about acting, movies, the arts, Hollywood lore, etc. The best part is when you have this stage star offer his insight on playing Hamlet, King Lear, Richard the III, Macbeth, and some of the other well-known characters that sprung from the mind of that Brit genius. And it's all told in probably the best voice for an audiobook one could hope for. A gem!

Narration could have been better

The writing was good enough and the story was interesting and sincere. What disappointed me was Stacy Keach's reading. He started every sentence loud or high and ended most of them in a whisper. I was frequently left wondering what could have been the last few words in the previous sentence.

The Perfect Sequel

Would you consider the audio edition of Asylum to be better than the print version?

Yes it would have to be as Pantoliano does a great job narrating and also adds additional commentary here and there.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Asylum?

I really enjoyed listening about some of his celebrity encouters such as his encounter with president Clinton.

What about Joe Pantolianos performance did you like?

What didn't I like? He is very sincere and he really does a great job changing his voice and stressing his words depending on the subject he his talking about.

This book is just as good as his first book, possibly even better as this book covers his Hollywood tales while also covering important subjects such as depression.

Maybe. She needs to slow down and add some emotion to her reading. It really seemed as if she rushed through it

Horrible Narration

What would have made Never Say Never better?

Having someone that could do a better job narrating than Ricki Lake.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

You would think that having the author herself, (especially considering that author is also an actress) read the book would undoubtedly be the best choice, but that is certainly not the case here. I am an avid listener of audiobooks, as in there is NEVER a time when I'm not listening to SOMETHING but unfortunately, in this instance I was unable to even get through the first few chapters because Miss Lake's "narration" was so disjointed, uncomfortable, unemotional & honestly just completely lacked of ANY inflection or feeling whatsoever that it was a TOTAL distraction from the story itself.

There have only been a handful of times in the YEARS I have been listening to audiobooks where I've felt the narration was so completely distracting that I had no choice but to turn the book off & unfortunately, Miss Lake's book was one of those times.
