Read all the multi-packs and shorts packs long ago, since 2012. The author has gotten better with age/practice. I've read almost all of the Cooper stories (1 - 230) and several of Mr. Bernico's short stories and most have not disappointed me. You'll find some poorly written or predictable stories, but for the most part they are fair to good. The Cooper series are better, but there's a few stinkers, too. They're great for a coffee break or a few minutes to relax.

Will Eddie make it out alive?

Eddie knew well enough what âtaking a rideâ meant: he'd taken enough folks on a "ride" himself. However, now Art and Gordy were taking HIM on this ride. He pleaded with them, "You know me! We're friends!"

Eddie knew exactly why he was in this predicament. He had broken an unbreakable rule of conduct for his position, and Carmine wasn't one to forgive. However, whatever terrible scheme Carmine might have devised to punish Eddie he claimed to give him a fifty-fifty chance to come out of it alive.

What happens to Eddie? Will things go according to (Carmine's) plan? Find out as you check out this latest addition to the Cooper collection: it is only twelve or so pages (depending on the font size) so it won't take long at all to read.

Never lagging in action this story is certainly worth a reading for all Cooper fans.

A chance to work with a star

Sullivan had an appointment with Clyde Peterson about a job in Ricky (uh, make that Rick) Nelson's band. His friend, Don, kept asking if he was nervous. After all, Nelson was a big star.

I assume Don was also there to try out for the job. We are never told that, but I have no idea why else he would have been there. At any rate he was a sounding board so we would at least know why Sullivan was there.

You know it has been said to be careful what you wish: it just might come true. Think Sullivan could be that fortunate? He's been in the business for years so he can only hope this is his shot at fame. But even if he DOES get the opportunity to be in Nelson's band, will it really be all he expects it to be?

You won't even have time to put up your feet this time around because it only lasts a few minutes (VERY short). However, still worth the read so what is stopping you? You must be a little curious about the story. Why else would you be reading reviews?

Good Reads

I enjoy this man's writing. His stories are short and entertaining and varied enough to keep me guessing about the outcome. I find they are a nice change from mega word plus reading and when I start one of his stories I feel like I am visiting with an old friend and finding out what is up with him - this time. When a book of his is available then I gladly add it to my reading list

Guitar player for Rick Nelson

A short story about a musician who becomes either a bass or guitar player for Rick Nelson's band. It was a whole story even though it was a short story. I enjoyed it. I gave this story 4.5 stars and rounded up to 5 since amazon doesn't have the .5. It is a sad story and may not be appropriate for everyone.

How much of Life is about the money?

Burt (or Bert - the spelling wasnât consistent) sold a lot of hot dogs from his vending cart, but he certainly wasn't getting rich. How was he going to make ends meet now that the cost for the dogs AND his rent were going up?

Burt's friend, Alf, invited Burt to work with him as a window washer hundreds of feet up in the air. Burt is terrified of heights, but Alf said he could make four or five times more money than what he's made selling hot dogs.

Will Alf convince Burt to try window washing? And even if he does, will Burt decide to risk his life just to make more money?

Another good excuse to take a reading break, this story makes Burt (us) consider just what is important.

Richest Man in New York

Was an interesting read about a vendor, who truly loves his job in New York, and how his customers helped him out of a predicament! But, I prefer the Matt Cooper stories!

Nothing personal: it's just a job.

Frankie had a job to do. He and Lou were taking Eddie on a ride to the desert. One of them wasn't coming back. Eddie'd taken his share of guys on rides so he knew the score: no surprises for anyone here.

But once the guys got out of the car Eddie saw his chance, and he ran like his life depended on it because... well, it DID!

Only one question: could he run fast and far enough?

You'll have to read and find that out for yourself. Only thing I can tell you is that he's gonna give it his best shot. Oh, yeah - the story's short so it won't take you long at all to find out what happened to him. Come on. Read it. Don't you care enough about the poor guy to find out if he made it or not? Awww, come on! SOMEbody's got to care about poor old Eddie!

These books were very good. I read them all over a three day weekend! The characters were interesting and the plot exciting. Really enjoyed these.

Just one more scam

Kenny Masterson was a scam artist. Sure, he'd happened into this innocently enough: he'd slipped on some ketchup at a fast food restaurant. The manager had given him a $25 gift certificate to avoid having an unhappy customer. Unfortunately, Kenny thought that was such a good thing he would do it over and over (so to speak). Sure beat the heck out of working.

Now Kenny wasn't greedy. He would only pull a new scam when he was running out of money from the previous one. Wonder how much he'll collect for his latest idea. Or is this the one where he gets caught? Has he gotten away with his last scam?

Not implausible

Almost 60 years ago we were driving through the mountains on those winding, 2 lane roads when someone passed our car only to slow down. After a while Dad passed him as we continued on our way to meet friends from church at an out of the way motel near the river. There would be several families joining us, but there was no one on this stretch of road except us and the crazy driver.

You have to remember that 60 years ago there was no such thing as "road rage", but the guy sharing the road with us reminded me of this story. As soon as Dad passed him, he again passed us only to slow down once again.

Of course Dad passed him again, and then he passed us, and.... This went on for quite a while before the other man apparently got to the point he needed to exit the road and leave us alone. Until that happened, Mom was extremely nervous because she was really afraid this crazy driver would do something else sooner or later, and we had no idea just what that might be.

Unlike the character in this story, there were no other irritating qualities to our wacko. All he did was continue to pass us and slow down. However, as I said, this was a different time.

Today, I could definitely see someone acting like Mr. Obnoxious in this story. We had an elder on the way to church a few years ago who was rear ended so hard it ripped the front seat of his vehicle off the floor so that he was lying down facing the ceiling. Several people stopped to help, but one man really caught his attention. This man walked up to the elder, pulled out a gun, and asked the elder, "Do you need this?" The elder was shocked. He said what he needed was a phone - NOT a gun.

So I DO know from personal experience that anything is possible when you share the road with someone who is a little crazy like the character in this story.

Fortunately, I have never seen anyone go as far in his rage as the drivers in this story, but I can absolutely imagine it happening. For me this story is all too believable.

You will have to read this for yourself to find out just how far these drivers were willing to go with their rage, but it will only take a few minutes to read so I would encourage you to do so.

This was a really good story to be so short, and I enjoyed it. I think you will too so get your copy today.

Okay, but very short.

I've read a few of Bill Bernico's short stories now. They are what I call light reading, easy to get into, and easy to get out of. Some are better than others. I find that in a lot of them, the story is just so unbelievable, and people act so out of character for real people that it spoils the story. However, at the same time, they are intended as light reading with no time for character development, so some artistic licence should be allowed.

This is a very short story, even for Bill Bernico.

Town bully

Delbert, Alabama, like most towns, had a bully. However, Jasper McKeever wasn't your ordinary bully. Standing well over six foot-five and tipping the scales at just over three hundred-fifty pounds Jasper was a bully extraordinaire: EVERYONE steered clear of him, and for good reason. He'd had years to perfect his meanness. With him mean wasn't just a streak: it ran plumb through him.

They say what goes around comes around, but the sleepy little town of Delbert is still waiting for karma to catch up with Jasper. And to make matters worse, Jasper just got his hands on a whole box of some mighty powerful firecrackers. Too bad the town has no idea: they'd surely close up shop and head for the hills!

Oh, well.... Find out for yourself just what "fun" Jasper is planning to have with his new toy. Trust me when I say that you are gonna LOVE this one. Come on, Jasper: bring it on!

Karma

This is a well-written short story about a horrible excuse for a human being. The story proves the old saying that what goes around, comes around. You'll have to read the story to understand the reference. Suffice it to say it's karma.

Poetic justice at its finest.

This short story is a terrific read with the perfect ending. Reminiscent of Stephen King short stories. Definitely an author to watch...

Take a chance

Melissa Berkley was bored with her uneventful life. She was tired of being alone: even the cat she'd adopted ran away. It was time to do something about the situation so she put a note in a bottles and threw it off the side of the ship mid way through the four hour voyage across the lake. She was hoping to find the man of her dreams, but ANY response would at least be a distraction from this humdrum existence.

It took months before anyone responded to her note: in fact, she'd all but forgotten about it. Would this turn out to be the beginning of a marvelous friendship? The love about which she had dreamed? An exciting adventure?

You will have to read this short story to discover who got the note, but it only takes a few minutes so check it out for yourself. It may be a little predictable, but this is still a good little story when you want something light to read.

Bernico has dozens upon dozens of short stories. Some are terrific and some are duds, but most of them are somewhere in between. This one is pretty good. But don't take the reviewers' word for it: read it and decide for yourself. That's all Bernico can ask you to do.

Oh this is a good one! The main character is interesting and there is enough time to get to know her a little. Melissa is nearing her 40s, and still single. In an attempt at love, she drops a bottle over the stern of a ship as she crosses Lake Michigan.
