    Title: Blow the House Down
    Author: Robert Baer
    Narrator: Paul Michael
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-25-06
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 77 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Veteran CIA officer Max Waller has long been obsessed with the abduction and murder of his Agency mentor. Though years of digging yield the name of a suspect, an Iranian math genius turned terrorist, the trail seems too cold to justify further effort. Then Max turns up a photograph of the man standing alongside Osama bin Laden and a mysterious westerner whose face has been cut out, feeding Max's suspicion. When the first official to whom Max shows the photo winds up dead, the out-of-favor agent suddenly finds himself the target of dark forces within the intelligence community who are desperate to muzzle him.
Eluding a global surveillance net, Max, in the summer of 2001, begins tracking the spore of a complex conspiracy, meeting clandestinely with suicide bombers and Arab royalty and ultimately realizing the Iranian he'd sought for a decades-old crime is actually at the nexus of a terrifying plot.
Showing off dazzling tradecraft and an array of richly textured backdrops, and filled with real names and events, Blow the House Down deftly balances fact and possibility to become the first great thriller to spring from the war on terrorism.
    Critic Reviews:
"Former CIA agent Baer, author of the memoir See No Evil, which inspired the film Syriana, offers the same closely observed details of intelligence work and life in his first novel." (Publishers Weekly)
"Extremely well crafted....The author...fills the book with the kind of detail that will make readers feel as though they have completed a crash course in international intelligence." (Booklis)

    What if...
What if what happened on 9/11 could have been avoided? What if so called "leaders of industry" had the blood of thousands of Americans on their hands? What if members of the government who are suppose to serve and protect us were serving themselves? I'm glad I didn't read any reviews before I listened to this book. I look at what our government is doing now in response to what happened on 9/11 and I'm so confused. Why haven't the ones who so mercilessly killed our sisters and brothers not been brought to justice? This is a bad joke or dream or both. Mr Baer tries to open our eyes to the inconsistencies of US policy and action abroad. I found his book supremely entertaining and Paul Michael is a very good narrator.
    another great book
this book leaves many questions unanswered regarding 9/11 and Iran and why the US government hasn't done what theyre supposed to
    Great Book
    Any additional comments?
Written by a former spy, Robert Baer brings to life the "life of a spy" and the intense moments as well as the skills need for a spy to do his job!
    So Boring
I have read other books by Baer and thought this one would be fascinating.
It was a completely boring dud.
Just kept waiting to become interested in any scenario or character, but it never happened.
    Don't bother with this one.
(The narrator was very good, though! Just had, should I write it again? BORING material.)
    Interesting, but . . .
I have read Baer's account of his service in the CIA and admire his accomplishments, but this would have been much better as a straightforward presentation of his observations and theories than as a novel. It lacks the strength of plot and atmosphere of the work of Furst and Le Carre's earlier works.

    author should stick to nonfiction
I read both of Robert Baer's previous (nonfiction) books on his life in the CIA and US-Saudi Arabian relations, and they were great. This novel is a so-so international espionage thriller, whose most interesting part is details about what it's like to be a CIA agent (better outlined in his nonfiction). I think it probably suffers greatly from being abridged because I found some of the connections hard to follow in an abridged audio format.

    NOT ENOUGH ACTION
This book did not keep me in suspension. It needed more action.
It would seem that this would have been the last in this series as most of the
main players are now gone. But, alas, there are more with new people
and I won't read anymore of the Net Force series.
    the End In The Future
Well written and exciting. Not too much computer jargon and a well developed plot that continues to a rapid conclusion.

    Publisher's Summary:
A sequel to the New York Times best-selling novel, Masquerade, The Coil picks up several years later. Liz Sansborough, former CIA agent and now an academic, has managed to put the pieces of her life back together. But Sansborough has a dark secret, she is the daughter of the one of the most notorious Cold War assassins, The Carnivore. When a series of prominent political figures are blackmailed into certain actions or die in suspicious ways, the CIA becomes convinced that someone has gotten hold of the Carnivore's files and is using that information to further some secret agenda. Sansborough herself, the closest living link to the Carnivore, is the target of a murder attempt, her offices are searched, her files stolen, and her TV program on the secrets of the Cold War inexplicably shelved by the network. When she learns her cousin Sarah Walker, who bears a close resemblance to Sansborough, is kidnapped off the street with the ransom demand being the Carnivore's missing, possibly apocryphal, files, Liz is determined to save her cousin and uncover the swirling conspiracy, linked to a shadowy group known as The Coil, centered around the legacy of her father. But she's far from the only one going after the truth behind the legendary assassin.

    HUGE FAN!!!
I got turned on to Gayle Lynds when I realized that she was actually the author of some of the Robert Ludlum "Covert-One" novels. I enjoyed them so much that I began to look for her other books. This was my first and I was hooked! She is fantastic! Her characters are great and stories exciting and suspenseful!
I'm a big fan!!! If you like Ludlum, you'll love Gayle Lynds!
    A great follow-up
Although this book can be enjoyed without having read the author's Masquerade, I don't think it can be fully appreciated. Both are excellent stories and well-paced. The narration of The Coil is good, but I didn't care for Ms. Reading's male British accents very much. Not distracting enough to lessen the book's enjoyment, but distracting none-the-less.

    Publisher's Summary:
One man leads this aging, ragtag crew. He has no known past and has taken the name "Oliver Stone". Soon the Club must join forces with veteran Secret Service agent Alex Ford, who becomes an unwilling participant in one of the most chilling spectacles to ever take place on American soil. the camel club
it's amazing that the synopsis of the book is so different from the actual book....it's like the person never read (or listened to) the book.
the story is ok and and has some nice twists but is not in the "can't stop listening" category.
    Not worth the time
I really like most of this author's books but this one was really weak. the plot did not make a lot of sense and he never really developed the characters. I really did not like all the political ramblings in the book.
    Entertaining
The narrator was good. I enjoyed the eclectic cast of characters. Suspend belief and remember it is fiction. I enjoyed the ride.
Very poor writing, even for espionage fluff
Some of the dialog was of the oldest cliches. Even the title concept, a club? An ex-assassin and a few geeks holding meetings like 8 year olds? Plus. the sections in which the author editorializes about US Middle East policies, come up again and again with the same basic tune. I found myself skipping ahead 5 minutes when I got to an annoying section, and listening to the end not because I cared what happened, but because I was fascinated at what outlandish crp came next. Like looking at a highway accident.
Enjoyed the idea of the Camel Club altogether.
Unusual Premise, and great narration. Would like to see how the Camel Club Started so will look for the first book in the series,

With few clues and little time, Jon Smith must find the mysterious figure who stands at the center of this nefarious plot.
    Members Reviews:
    Competant yet stereotyped
The Moscow Vector is a competant novel that sticks to its genre. That said, the book is unfortunately quite predictable especially to those who have read Larkin/Ludlum previously. Quite political at times with characters mirroring those of today's world leaders, the book should have maintained a bit more independent focus. As it were, the story mired itself in an immutable disbelief on the reader's part given the farfetched nature of the schemes. Also the book's jingoism gets a little old especially in the context of the us-vs.-them mentality espoused by the author.
However, being farfetched and patriotic (weak use of the term) is what these books are all about, so do not let that dissuade you from reading the novel. If you like Larkin, then I think you will enjoy this offering.
    Wonderful!
One of the most entertaining thrillers I have listened to in a while. Fast paced, well written and enjoyable.
    Good Series Continued
Would you consider the audio edition of Robert Ludlum's The Moscow Vector to be better than the print version?
I prefer to listen. If it's the same reader you look forward to the story.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Well written. Keeps you wanting more.
What does Erik Bergmann bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Solid performance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If there were only time, yes.
    The Moscow Vector
Very good as mysteries go, but I got lost at times
    Drove me crazy
This book would be much better and shorter if the author had left out the numerous adjectives. How many times can one book claim the character said something "grimly." or shrugged quietly. On the plus side the reader did well with the accents in particular, the American voices were superb. Someone needs to give Erik Bergmann
a real book to read. In the end I couldn't wait till it was over. It drove me crazy. Ludlum was a genius compared to this. Save your money.

    Release date: 01-28-05
    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Publisher's Summary:
In the process of investigating the suspicious death of a local professor, Paul Tomm finds the dead man's heavily fortified office stuffed with books on alchemy. The Geographer's Library entwines his contemporary reporting with a chain of ancient stories-within-the-story, tracking the last time each of the geographer's tools changed hands; some bought, some stolen, some killed for.
The Geographer's Library is an extraordinary debut, smart, stylishly written, and full of suspense. It tempts with the glitter of antiquities and hooks with a chilling plot.
    Critic Reviews:
"One of the year's most literate and absorbing entertainments." (Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    The Geographers Library
The two stories running at the same time was confusing at first. Once I was able to understand what it was all about, it was easier to listen to but it was still a trial. Scott Brick was wonderful as usual. I swear that man could read the phone book and he would hold my interest.
    Confusing
This book requires attentive listening as the story moves from present to past and most of the movement is not linear. Often, a past episode is developed in bits and pieces with portions of how it was resolved left out. The ending is not believeable given that the protagonist is a 23 year old journalist at a time when expose is the mantle of newspapers.
Geographer's Library Reads Like A Map
There's a way of embellishing a modern mystery with historical details that brings the mystery to life, but this work is not an example of it. This work alternates chapters of historical facts/fiction, overstuffed with proper nouns of multiple ancient and foreign languages to the point of pedantic padding that, at the time of the telling, is stilted, plodding and, finally, nothing but annoying and distracting. I found myself fast-forwarding past the relentless "art history" chapters to get to the "modern mystery" chapters without feeling that anything significant had been missed. But that is not to imply that the "modern mystery" is, itself, interesting. Such is not the case. Maybe an abridged version would have seemed less ponderous, but even the narrator could not imbue this one with anything resembling entertainment.
    waste of time
I had the rare opportunity to listen to this book at 2 sittings on long flights, and was really looking forward to it. I don't knoiw why I bothered to hear it to the end except that I had nothing else to do and am an eternal optimist, hoping the author would make something out of his wonderful idea for a novel. The characters aren't developed sufficiently to care about them, and the author drags out descriptions to the point of total boredom. The plot doesn't start to congeal until the last 2 discs, and by then, I didn't care. What a waste of prescious time.
    Good but not great
Well developed characters, great writing style, but lacking in the finish.

    Release date: 09-10-04
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio

    Publisher's Summary:
But she is not the Santa Rosa. She is the Noordendam, a Dutch freighter. Under the command of Captain Eric DeHaan, she sails for the Intelligence Division of the British Royal Navy, and she will load detection equipment for a clandestine operation on the Swedish coast, a secret mission, a dark voyage.
One more battle in the spy wars that rage through the back alleys of the ports, from elegant hotels to abandoned piers, and in the souks and cafés of North Africa. A battle for survival as the merchant ships die at sea and Britain, the last opposition to Nazi Germany, slowly begins to starve.
From Alan Furst, whom The New York Times calls America's preeminent spy novelist, here is an epic tale of war and espionage, of spies and fugitives, of love in secret hotel rooms, of courage in the face of impossible odds.
    Critic Reviews:
"It's no secret by now that Furst is a superlative chronicler of World War II, and his new novel is a splendid addition to an accomplished body of work....The book casts such a spell with its exact evocations of time, place, and language that one could swear Furst was a Brit writing out of his own experience in 1941 rather than an American writing today." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Not enough of a good thing
This is a terrific book read by a talented reader, but its strength lies in the atmospheric details the author does so well and I feel cheated by the abridgement. More Furst, unabridged, please.
    Intelligent, absorbing and superbly read
This is one of those audiobooks that make you wish there were an unabridged version, and wonder whether you should go out and purchase the book. The best audiobook that I've heard in a long time. The reader deserves special praise for bringing it to life.
    The reader makes it great
If you could sum up Dark Voyage in three words, what would they be?
    thoughtful, different, engaging
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
the last 45 minutes were very good, worth the listen.
the beginning is confusing and hard to keep one's attention, at least, mine.
Which character as performed by Graeme Malcolm was your favorite?
    DeHaan.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    unsung Navel heroes of WWII
    Any additional comments?
yes. i LOVE the reader! that's why i am writing the review, i'd read most anything of his and want to vote for him as the best!
    Good but not great
This abridged Furst novel seems to lack some of the substance of his other novels. Nevertheless, it is an engaging story that again shows the dark backdrop of WWII as interpreted by this prosaic writer. Not a top recommendation, but worth a read.
    More Furst please
A very good book, exceptionally well read.
