OK i have to admit this book took me a LONG time to get into, but I finally finished it. The reader was very good, bringing the characters to life and giving voice to nuances. The story? Broadly speaking, been there done that...but learned something about the desert, history, and overall was entertained. That's the point, isn't it?

A less than satisfying listen!

After listening to God???s Spy and thoroughly enjoying it, I was looking forward to this book with much anticipation. However, I struggled with this book for at least the first half and only slightly less so for the remainder. I could never quite get my head into the overall book. While some parts flowed along nicely, other parts seemed disjointed and misplaced. There are so many characters to keep track of that many of them just get lost. I forced myself to continue listening at times just to see if the story would start to flow better. I breathed a sigh of relief when I finally finished the book, but I didn???t feel fulfilled such as with many other books. Yes, the plot came to a conclusion, but it was not a satisfying one. As far as recommending this book to friends, I am hesitant since there are many better thrillers out there that I would recommend before this book. And this book???s predecessor, God???s Spy, would be one book definitely recommended over this one.

I listened to the entire first half and still am clueless. I think it must have lost something in the translation, that and the narrator puts me to sleep. Can I get my credit back? Wouldn't that be nice.

Either back on form - or better than ever

I love Bernie Gunther, but it's been a bumpy ride - not bad, but maybe and naturally/rightly veering about a bit in style across the books in this pretty long series.

Prussian Blue felt like a return to how I remember the first few books - felt like Philip Kerr had got his teeth into researching an interesting bit of history, and had then dropped in Bernie to stubbornly Chandler his way through it.

Another outstanding piece of work from Philip KERR

Kerr again adeptly develops two compelling plots full of punchy and witty dialogue and several twists. He again demonstrates his undoubted detailed knowledge of extremely troubled times in Europe and expertly blends reality with fiction to the extent it can be difficult to differentiate between the two.

Another Bernie triumph and roll on the next episode.

Yes - for the story. No for the discursive rants about Nazis - we all know how ghastly they were....

What other book might you compare Prussian Blue to, and why?

Can't think of any off-hand. Technically very accomplished. A lot of research has obviously been done (but appears quite natural).

I have read most of the Bernie Gunther series. The stories are always excellent and he seems a most pleasant fellow. However, if I were to read this on paper I could skip all (or most of) the predictable wise-cracks about the horrors of Nazism (a bit like the Latin prayers in Ulysses!). We all know how awful they were. I have read history and Primo Levi. If we don't know by now, no one can tell us!

Difficult

There was nothing endearing about the characters which would make me want to finish this book and I've managed to finish some poor books. I normally wouldn't complain about the narration but an American accent narrating a German character really didn't work in this.

The Best

This is without doubt the best love story/spy thriller I have encountered in many listens. The reader is great and it was surprising to me how well a male author captured female views. So many of these tales just want justify a womans roll in the ranks of spys and cops. This one was much more.

My mother recommended this audiobook and I wholeheartedly agree with her recommendation. This book is elegantly written with an intricate, meticulously-drawn plot and multi-dimensional characters.

The writer, "Kamensky", was my favourite character because of his profound capacity to love.

No - but I thought this performance was wonderful.

The Secret Lovers is so much more than a spy thriller. It is a love story told with such elegant brilliance that it took my breath away.

Winding sluggishly, the plot was improbable and often boring. A real disappointment since I loved all of McCarry's other books.

Ok, but.......

What did you like best about Rogue? What did you like least?

Story was good but details of places was poorly researched. It's obvious that the author has never been to Argentina, and hasnt a clue about Buenos Aires which spoiled the story in my opinion.

I've bought the next two books in the series already as this made me laugh, reflect and imagine ! A gripping thriller without unnecessary gruesome violence on every page. A balanced story of characters and plot. Loved it.

Quite a good thriller, not as good as Bond, Bauer and Bourne, as claimed. I'm not sure if it's the narrator or the author but someone needs to learn how to read/write a 24 hour clock!

Awful, I deserve a medal for actually completing it!

Plot unrealistic and unbelievable - too many improbable scenarios, even with this genre I would expect a pinch of credibility...

WWII again

A new take on the last days of WWII. The story is well told if a little implausible. Readers of this type fiction will be used to the heroes and the anti heroes always being one step ahead but the antihero in this book almost takes that too far. If the good guys would have had him on their team the war would have been over in 1943 and Hitler would have wondered what hit him. The hero is not only a good guy but an understanding, caring good guy, a combination we don't often see in police characters. The narration was very well done and the book is certainly worth a listen.

Totally excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A couple minor technical details that those of us who have served will pick up on, but a great story never the less. If you like Eye of he Needle, you'll like this one too.

jeeps don't have keys

Some minor technical mistakes make it hard to suspend disbelief. Hard nosed cop makes a good hero versus nazi super villans. Military vehicles don't have keys, for one thing. My step-father was in the battle and remembered asking other GIs "who is the king of swat?" (Babe Ruth).

The Germans did cause chaos.

Perfect voice for the master's stories

John Le Carre writes quite amazing stories - about flawed innocents with pure intentions caught up in the mendacities of the real word. There is something about Michael Jayston's voice, the slightly jaded world-weariness, that makes it quite the perfect vehicle for Le Carre's writing.

Well read in a strong believable voice.

The ending is different to the film adaptation, which I believe is better because your mind makes its own predictions of the outcome, which I'm finding aren't quite as nice.

HOPE NEVER DIES....

In the best tradition and under the cover of hide-and-seek, it's a hunting love story, resembling a Russian folktale, which offers a rare and enthralling spectacle: the resurrection of buried hopes. The novel is reserved, but still full of potent surprises, 24 years after its publication. This could hardly be said about the global political system, which inspired its conception. We were full of hopes then. Many of us disenchanted of what has transpired since. The work is a great example of fine literature may outlive reality that has gone to the dogs.

Not one of le Carre's best

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Weak plot and too much padding makes this no more than two stars.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Michael Jayston?

The narrator uses a whisper, particularly with female voices, so it can be difficult to follow without the text or by adjusting the volume.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Russia House?

Most chapters could have sections removed without affecting the weak plot.

This is really a short storey expanded into a too long novel.

Pointless

I am a Le Carre' fan but this one is such a waste of time. I think the author must have been in a different place. There is no direction and because the text books are bogus, no relevance
