Backstage Pass to a Revolution

I remember reading Wolman's story in Wired a number of years ago about these no-account revolutionaries in Egypt. They tried to fly a kite as a protest but they couldn't even get it in the air before Mubarak's thugs beat them. I remember thinking, "Nothing will ever change." Well, I was wrong and Wolman was right to bring these students to our attention. Those same kids who couldn't even manage to fly a kite have just re-written the rules of revolution. This in-depth look at how they did it is fascinating and important. But it's also thrilling to feel like you are right there with them as they overthrow a government.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time: David Wolman's 2008 trip to Egypt to report on young Egyptians using Facebook to organize against the repressive regime put him in the perfect place to trace the roots of this year's historic events in the Middle East.

In "The Instigators," Wolman tells the story of the April 6 Youth, a brave group of technologically savvy activists who sensed the Internet's potential as a tool for organizing and, perhaps, affecting some sort of change in their country's authoritarian political system.

And now look where we are. For this longer piece, Wolman returned to Egypt to reconnect with his local sources, who are now fielding calls from world leaders instead of running from security police. It's a riveting story of bravery, serendipity and hope whose ending is still far from certain. Definitely recommended.

Fully Captivated by The Instigators: Relatable and Relative

What was most intriguing about reading The Instigators was how it effectively captured a piece of the complex story of the Arab Spring and the conflict in Egypt. It was clear that Wolman put incredible time and effort into profiling Maher and gathering the details of this story, making it more than just another simply journalistic report of the conflict. Some of the careful detail in this piece include the welled-up eyes of the sympathetic woman from Cairo, the passionate but secretive exchanges between Maher and El Shaheed, and the subtle notes of humor, including the somewhat comical descriptions of Maher and his shiny head. Ultimately, I preferred how Wolman occasionally reminded the reader that he was involved in the fiasco himself, as the writer and reporter. Rather than writing the piece without any trace of a first-person voice, as in several other pieces I have read, Wolman did establish a certain sense of himself as the reporter and insider in this story.

Great economic policy primer

Debacle is a great book that clearly explains the past, present, and possible future for the USA.

The book is well researched, sighting many interesting facts. It explains how the US economy got to where it is today and how the stimulus packages have negatively affected things.

The book also lays out an intelligent plan for productive future.

Some of the topics explained in Debacle:

* Stimulus Bills made the recovery and employment rate worse, not better.

* States and Countries that "stimulated" less did better.

* Canada/Germany unemployment trends mapped with ours up to stimulus event.

* Larry Summers is one of the people most responsible for damaging the US economy.

* How Keynesian economic theory has proven to be a failure, yet Obama still embraces it.

* Stimulus funds went not to where the worst economic conditions existed, but to where Obama's supporters were mostly located.

* Political pressure to give out risky loans and funds to friends of the administration are exposed.

* Why and how the Sub-Prime housing market crisis happened, mostly due to political pressure from both parties on banks to give out risky loans to low income borrowers. Freddie and Fannie, by being government backed, was another leading reason.

What disappointed you about Dangerous Diplomacy: How the State Department Threatens America's Security?

The readers intonation was terrible. It was impossible to tell the difference between a quote and a statement. In addition, his tone was like someone reading to a kid, which contradicts the serious tenor of this nonfiction book.

Don't know. I think I'll read a book. This is my 3 rd disappointment since I re-upped.
