Publisher's Summary:
The inside story of the protest that has given birth to America's most important progressive movement in a half century.
In a vivid, fast-paced narrative, the key events of the occupation are described: the pepper spraying of young women corralled between plastic fences by the NYPD; the mass arrests on the Brooklyn Bridge; the victory on October 14th when an announced "clean up" of the square was abandoned by a mayor's office fearful of a PR disaster; and the eventual storming of the occupation that brought it to an abrupt end. Woven throughout are stories of daily life in the square focusing on how the kitchen, library, media center, clean-up, hospital, and decision-making at the General Assembly functioned, all in the words of the people who were there.
The future course of Occupy Wall Street remains unclear. But one thing is starkly evident: Under the banner "We are the 99%" the protest has given birth to America's most important progressive movement since the civil rights marches half a century ago. This is the story of that beginning.
Writers for the 99% is a group of writers and researchers, active in supporting Occupy Wall Street, who came together to create this book. A list of all those contributing will appear at the back of the book.
All profits from this book will be donated to Occupy Wall Street.
Members Reviews:
an interesting and unique perspective
For someone who wasn't able to keep track of events during the occupy movements, this book serves as an excellent executive summary. It also includes several slice-of-life stories that bring the movement into a clearer focus that perhaps wasn't observable with traditional media.
Voices From the Ho polioi in culture
Having the original 'Voices From the 99 Percent' autographed and (as being edited) by Lenny Flank, I find this book to be very accurate. The question is, "what do we have for a future?" We live with headline after headline capturing attention, for the moment, but as we may realize, little changes. Sited from page 78:, from the book 'A Promise to Methuselah' Wesley Clark recounted conversations that The Secretary of Defence has outlined the distruction of seven countries. The seven countries are Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Libia, Sudan and Iran.
The political muse continues:
"The budget should be balanced,
The treasury should be filled,
Public debt should be reduced,
And assistance to foreign lands
Should be curtailed,
Least Rome become bankrupt.
People must again learn to work,
Instead of living on public assistance."
Cicero 55 B.C.
Much better than I had expected
Much better than I had expected, as it weaves together many essays from participants which, when taken as a whole, provide a profound analysis and historiography of the movement (sort of like Occupy itself). This book remains essential reading for activists, simply because other moments will present themselves in our future when we'll need to grapple with the many questions raised. Among other things, the future movement will need to solve the issue of occupying a particular spot, yet also being able to go out from that spot to do marches, join up with strike actions, etc.
