Drama meets science

I started the read as research for a project, but halfway in approached it as leisure reading. The personalities involved in the race to break the code, the unorthodox methods that Crick and Watson applied, and the dynamics of the scientific development (or MISdevelopment) that led to the discovery are all intriguing for the average science buff.

Hawking and Black Holes

"Hawking and Black Holes" is one title in the "Big Idea" series, by the British writer/philosopher Paul Strathern. All of the titles in this series have been of interest to me, and some of them have also been professionally useful because I am a science teacher. I can also recommend a book by Strathern which is not in the Big Idea series; it is called "Mendeleev's Dream", and concerns the creation of the Periodic Table.

Strathern Tackles Science & Scientists

Paul Strathern, author of the outstanding Philosophers in 90 Minutes series, hits the mark once more in a series about scientists. In this work, he gives the reader a comprehensive yet brief overview of Stephen Hawking's life & works. Strathern, as usual, is entertaining, informative & funny. Strathern cuts through the vernacular & brings the subject matter in plain, direct language. This book is definately a winner!

A quick read, but shallow

Strathern's summary of the life of Issac Newton is less than 90 pages of unusually large print -- a very quick read indeed. At best, it is a superficial glance that provides little insight into the life or work of Newton.

In many ways, the book is a contradiction. Strathern's approach is more suited to a children's book, but his writing style is intended for an educated adult. For me, the result was fast-paced boredom.

I Love the Book

This book told me several significant points about Issac that I (and most other people) are not aware of. It also inspired me to learn more. It requires a small amount of time to read. For me that is an advantage.

This is a great book for people that avoid fat books which are padded with trivial details that can't be remembered anyway.

Fascinating Topic

This short book lets the fascinating story of a brilliant and hyper-influential thinker shine through without much interference. After a slightly laboured but interesting enough sprint through the history of computing to the twentieth century, Turing's story is largely given a platform to speak for itself. That story could not fail to make for a interesting read.
