Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
We have all experienced anger at one point or another, and for some it may be a regular emotion. It can be as simple as a minor irritation or as complex as full-fledged rage. The human emotion of anger is completely common and perhaps, could even be considered healthy and normal. The trouble sets in when the anger is out of control and actually turns negative and destructive. You can have issues in your various personal relationships, your job and in your life's overall quality. When anger reaches the point that you feel as though you are merely at the mercy of an emotion that is both powerful and unpredictable, then that becomes the tipping point for many to seek help. Something needs to change.
Anger is linked to other biological and physiological changes. For instance, when something sets you off and you become angry, your blood pressure and heart rate elevate in addition to your adrenaline, energy hormones, and noradrenaline (norepinephrine).
As long as the world continues to spin and relating to others is a part of our day, it is inevitable that someone sometime will eventually test our nerves. In the same breath, you, too, are guilty of getting on other's nerves without even being aware. When you are faced with distressing circumstances, the optimal things to practice are maintenance of your calmness and coolness and keeping the tantrums of anger at bay. In essence, control your anger as opposed to your anger controlling you. Make control a part of your reality by further understanding what causes anger, childhood connections, healthful displays of anger, stage of life rage, and the strategies for achieving that much-desired control.

    How did this get published?
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Anger Management and Real Life Stories?
The author is functionally illiterate. Almost every paragraph has grammatical problems - most of them basic errors which should never have made it to publication. Brutal
    Any additional comments?
The stories are interesting, but the rest of it was excruciating.
There are better books on anger management.
I wish I could say something nice but while the topic is of utmost value this book is very dry and boring.

    Simple and Insightful
How to Stay Depressed is a short, easy to read, gentle yet practical book about reducing depression. The chapters present things clearly and kindly, with humour and a reassuring tone of authority that comes from the author's evident clinical experience.
As someone who has tried any number of techniques in the past, I was pleasantly surprised to find in these pages some simple things which are new to me (as well as reminders of others I have encountered elsewhere) which are effective in shifting myself away from depression. It is good to know that there are things I can do to help support myself, whether I am in depression or well. That makes me feel more at ease.
This book can be read one chapter a day or is short enough to read in one sitting. I preferred the slower approach so I could absorb the concepts and practice them before moving on.
The spiritual section gave me some useful guidance without any religious context, which I found both welcome and unexpected. The principle section provides some quotes which would be great to print or write out and have about your home to remind you to take care of yourself, and to keep the key messages in mind.
A varied toolbox of techniques is needed to make ongoing adjustments towards living an easier and healthier life, and this book gathers some key tools together in one place that is easily accessible.
    Nothing New
This book is fine if its your first book on depression, or if you don't have access to the internet; otherwise, its pretty much a waste of time, money, and paper. Everything in this book is easily found in any standard article on depression.

Understanding the secret code of illness and health
Many doctors overlook the seemingly inexplicable tragedies and recoveries that happen in hospitals every day, opting to view them simply as aberrations from the medical norm. In this book, Dr. Marc Siegel draws from his decades of experience treating patients and explores the sometimes miraculous effects that the spirit and emotion can have on disease and healing. The inner pulse is the essence that links the soul to the mind and body, the marker that predicts whether a person's life force is fading or strengthening. This book shows you how to tap into your inner pulse and even how to influence it.
Exploring the uncanny world where expectation and outcome are driven by a patient's personal intuition, this book will give you a deeper understanding of how the mind relates to disease and how the mind and the body working in sync can help heal.

    Not What I Expected
First of all, I am a fan of Sunday House Call... that is why I bought the book. In my opinion "The Inner Pulse" is simply another phrase for a person's "will ti live." I expected to read about developments in genetic coding, cell modification and medical discoveries. The stories were interesting and the book was an "easy read." I was disappointed and glad I didn't pay a lot for it.
    Four Stars
I originally purchased the book to satisfy my thoughts.
The Inner Pulse: Unlocking the Secret Code of Sickness and Health
I was not able to put this book down. I found this book very thought provoking. I loved how it made me think outside the square and it rang oh so true for me. As a person who has had a recent cancer battle much of I read I found to be current and relevantThe Inner Pulse: Unlocking the Secret Code of Sickness and Health.
    Questions Answered
I enjoy watching Dr. Marc Siegel on TV, and I became very interested in his advise on good health habits, so I purchased this book. It has proven very educational in many ways.
A medical breakthrough --and a great read
Reading Marc Siegel's "The Inner Pulse" is a bit like reading the early work of Sigmund Freud, with one significant difference: Siegel is the better writer. What ties the two together is the rare ability to see the obvious that others have missed, and to identify it even if no microscope can locate it, no electronic scanner graph it. Like Freud, doubtless Siegel may well suffer the slings and arrows of the medical profession, which as a whole insists on dealing only with what can be seen. Siegel, like Freud, deals in what can not be seen but which is nevertheless there.
    And how.
Essentially Siegel has managed to deduce from decades of practice as an internist the existence of a singular bit of human physiognomy that cannot be found in Gray's Anatomy. Where this "thing" resides remains an open question, but after only a dozen pages the reader becomes a believer in the reality of a certain "inner pulse" that drives us to flourish or succumb, to health or sickness or even -as Siegel reveals in a series of eye-opening vignettes, to live or die.

    Riepilogo Editore:

    Publisher's Summary:
Too sensitive for your own good? There are many reasons why certain people - some figures suggest 10 percent of the population - have a "thinner skin" than others, including hereditary factors, upbringing, and a more than usually sensitive nervous system. Whatever the reason, the over-sensitive person often has a hard time of it, being easily hurt, unable to say no, more prone to stress than average - and likely to have vivid dreams and nightmares.
This book shows how to make sensitivity work for you rather than against you. There are many advantages to being "a sensitive", such as increased empathy, imagination, and understanding of people. However, over-sensitive people may need to work at self-esteem and confidence harder than usual, or in different ways. This book looks at how such people can accept themselves on their terms, rather than those of the outside world.

Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind
    Publisher's Summary:
Is there really such a thing as a midlife crisis - a true crisis in a person's life that happens in midlife? Yes, there is. But fortunately for most of us, it is a fairly rare event. Unlike the midlife crisis, a midlife transition is a quasi-universal reaction to the major changes that take place in midlife, mentally, physically, and in relationships. This book describes the powerful, dynamic forces that underlie both the midlife crisis and midlife transition, and provides, through clinical case material, a detailed description of each.
With expertise, understanding and empathy, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Calvin Colarusso, M.D., uses his 50 years of experience of working with midlife individuals to explain this hackneyed, but real, crisis in plain English for the general public.
Think of this book as a way to calmly navigate through the turbulent waters of midlife without experiencing a true midlife crisis or a particularly difficult midlife transition; and to understand the often-times puzzling behavior of those you know and love.
Midlife Crisis: Middle Aged Myth or Reality? contains:
About the author, Calvin Colarusso, M.D.: An eminent authority in the field of adult development, Dr. Colarusso is a board certified clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego. Waste of time
Wasted my time reading this. It offered some examples of anonymous parties therapy sessions and no real insight into the concept of a midlife crisis
    Mid-life crisis.What mid-life crisis?
This is a fascinating book. Once we hit thirty or forty or fifty we convince ourselves that we are having mid-life crises. Some of us have them every two months!
In this short, eminently readable book Dr.Calarusso ,a well known Psychiatrist demystifies the traditional ideas behind the mid-life crisis. This short book is not only easy to understand for even the most ignorant layman it also shows the majority of us that we do not suffer from mid-life crises but we experience mid-life transitions.
It's natural as we grow older that we should feel that we are running out of time. It's also natural that we should question our lives and what we have or haven't achieved.
We ask ourselves: did I make the right career choice? Did I pursue the right interests? Did I marry the right person?
This is perfectly normal and is a mid-life transition as opposed to a crisis. A crisis is where we allow these questions to dominate our lives.
So are you in a mid-life crisis or transition?
If you want to know more and if you want to read about it quickly and easily then this book is for you. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
