Sympathy for the Devil?

I am no Thatcherite... BUT this audiobook gave me a fascinating glimpse of the deeply held values that motivated MT and the Tory government under her leadership during those formative years in the 1980s.

Union power and the Miners Strike, the Falklands War and the Belgrano, Carter & Reagan, EEC and monetary union, unemployment and the riots, and her final bitter betrayal by her own Cabinet and Party are all tackled with her own brand of ebullient individualism.

Having just read Tony Blair's 'A Journey', I am struck how similar these two characters are. Both strong 'Presidential' style leaders, who took difficult decisions which divided the Country. In both cases dogmatic self-belief being both an asset and the cause of their downfall.

And surprisingly... I was left with an admiration for the 'Iron Lady'. The lessons of Churchill & the War, values of loyalty, fighting for democracy and British interests, not being deflected by criticism and a kind of assertive honesty came through strongly as her foundational virtues. Love her or hate her, this book is a great insight into her way of thinking.

A well written and read book

Having lived through these years as a child and only ever hearing politics from my fathers very anti Thatcher stance I couldn't resist trying to understand why Mrs Thatcher did the things she did.

She is not one for discussing her failures much it seems but at times she was humble and it was moving the way she spoke of the tragedies that occurred during her time.

I came away from this admiring her more for her determination and strength of decision making rather than the hopeless 'listening' governments we have now that back away from any remotely bad publicity or making decisions that might stop them staying in power. Interesting that she feels she came into power with the country in a complete economic mess after Labours overspending and comparing this to todays situation. So much of what was going on back then rings true to now its scary.

Well read and interesting insight into an iconic lady. Like her or loathe her this is an interesting book. I'm off to hear the other side of the story from Tony Blair now!

Context is key

Unless you lived in and around her time, or are studying her, or simply know a lot about eighties politics, this book might bore you. She provides little to no context, and fires off names and events with dizzying frequency. If, like me, you wanted to learn about her, I would buy a book written about her and maybe then come back to this one.

love the fact this is read by maggie herself. an honest and true account of her time in downing street, great for anyone interest in educating themselves on a particular period.

John D Rockefeller is one of the most successful businessmen the world ever produced, listening to him not only inspiring but also provide excellent lessons on building a business based on a solid foundation and long-term financial and organizational strength rather than speculation and short-term gains.

Great book! I'm a young aspiring entrepreneur looking for skills to build a healthy foundation of wealth and an overall good life. John D Rockefeller wrote this in his later years after the mistakes of a younger man and he shares the ingredients necessary to be a massive success. It's your job as the reader to read between the lines. Thanks for the wisdom Mr. John D Rockefeller!

I was thrilled to learn that this book is available because I've been searhing out the books on old school businessmen. I loved reading about how his beginnings in business (his father gave him some money and lent him the rest - at a rather high interest rate!) and although his reminiscences of men are rather boring (all of them long gone), the reminiscences of events and his thoughts on various subjects are thrilling.

Great book on the life of a great man.

Excellent.

Once a Knight is not always enough

I bought Reach for the Skies, partly because I needed a 'quick fix' to get me through to my next credit and also because I admire the man. He is a man of my time and we share a timeframe thus there are many connections through ideas developed during the shared years. This is always a good start and him narrating was a bonus.

There is little doubt Sir Richard knows his stuff and he takes us through the great experiments of flight with passion and connectivity. Of course you couldn't be Branson unless there was an opportunity to promote his brand and it is well evident but the connections to his tales work in a way that did not make me feel as if I had paid for a Virgin commercial. Tight, short and tinged with pathos, we discover insights about pioneers that are a worthy listen.

Sir Richard of Virgin, I salute you for your tale telling and unabashed but sensitive promotion.

intriguing and engaging

A great and engaging audio book about air travel, ballooning, space travel, the environment and adventure.

This is an enlightened account into what the troubles and lives have gone into improving the technology to fulfil our dreams of flight and going into space. A tad dated

Many of the subjects in this book are rather old, in relation to the history of the internet. Perhaps it's because I just read The Facebook Effect, but I found that many of the case studies here were a bit long in the tooth. Netscape, AOL and even Apple are ancient history.

Good, not great

It is an interesting read, but not memorable. A bit outdated, but not special. Could have been better.

Interesting all the way through

I have only been a member of audible for a few months and have to say that the writing of Winners & Losers keeps you listening all the way through. If you are interested in how some companies have won in this internet age and how some have gone from great heights and have lost then you will find as I have that you have to keep on listening all the way through as the story flows and goes from one interesting fact to another. The narration is also first class and easy on the ears. My first book that I have enjoyed so much that I have had to leave this review. Very highly recommended. hope you enjoy this also.

Good listen but very irritating at times

Some fascinating insights into the early days of some of the biggest new age companies around. Especially worth listening to for those who weren't adults in the early 80's.

The authors love of Apple and dislike of Microsoft comes through to often for my tastes and the different voices the narrator uses are annoying after a while.

Fascinating insight into internet business

This really is an exceptional book! Kieran Levis has studied his subject well and discusses what havoc the internet has wreaked on business at large. The big blue-chips are discussed here - Sony, Apple, Nokia, IBM, Kodak, Google, Ebay, Microsoft and Sky to name a few; you'll be surprised at who won, and who lost... and who nearly lost but won!

Each company is described in comprehensive detail, but this never becomes boring or repetitive (like some books I've listened to).

He is, in my opinion, the best performer of audiobooks. Everything he does with characters is great, and his voice itself has character.

Don't waste your money

This was my first audible book and I was looking for Sam Walton's auto biography. I was disappointed in this 30 min junk. It is more like a magazine article.

Worthless information

I didn't look at the time length of the book. Just assumed it would be a full length book. My error. Don't waste the $2.

Webinar by Mr. Harrison on monetizing media appearnaces

I am not tempted to purchase anything by Mr. Harrison after attending a recent teleseminar he presented this past Monday 2/24/2014. I so realize these events are primarily an opportunity for a coach to convince you to purchase their wares. As a busy entrepreneur I attend many of these. For my hour or so time investment I always receive at least 15-20 minutes of high quality information, and get an introduction to some excellent speakers, instructors, and coaches, some of which I go on to purchase some of their information products (such as Nancy Juetten, and Bill Barren, both whom I highly recommend). The hour and a half I virtually spent with Mr. Harrison this past Monday was a complete, frustrating waste of my time, as it was 90 minutes of just trying to sell me his program.
