Title: The Triumph of an Idea
Subtitle: The Story of Henry Ford
    Author: Ralph H. Graves
    Narrator: David Mitchell
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 33 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-04-10
    Publisher: Coolbeat Audiobook Publishing
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 14 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
Here is the story of a mechanically inclined farm boy who turned the automobile from a toy for the wealthy, into a necessity for modern life.
This biography approaches the story of Henry Ford in the context of his world. For example, roads were as much a factor for cars, as the car was for roads. The farmer would not risk his livelihood on a Ford internal combustion tractor until the engine proved itself in his Sunday car. And the public was suspicious of mass production until Ford showed it could provide value, quality, and good wages.
    Members Reviews:
Shallow book badly read - waste of money and time
What would have made The Triumph of an Idea better?
More insight into Ford's organisation and people management. Coverage of Ford's problematic attitudes like antisemitism and support of nazis and Hitler.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Mitchell?
Anybody or nobody. Narration is very amateurish, but even the best performer would not save lack of content.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Triumph of an Idea?
Most of it. Long lists of contextual historical events and exhibition descriptions are almost unrelevant.
Very Poorly Written - Misleading Title
I bought this book expecting to listen to the story of Henry Ford and how an idea and vision had triumphed, instead I ended up listening to what I could easily find from Wikipedia about Henry Ford.
The author had shamelessly used the name of Henry Ford and written about a subject he clearly had no clue about. In every chapter he gives us a line or two about Mr Ford and then the storyline wonders to paragraphs of meaningless rambling about historical events that occurred during the time of the event author started to talk about.
If those historical occurrences were at least distantly related to Henry Ford or his triumphant vision we could have tolerated the book, but unfortunately about seventy five percent of the book has absolutely nothing to do with Henry Ford.
For example; he starts to tell us about what happend during a certain time of Mr Ford's life and then starts to tell us about who ruled France at the time, what happened in England politically and how a something else was occurring in India during the same time.
    An absolute waste of time.
Just Terrible; People Magazine in History
    - Very awkward narrator (may be due to the old age of the recording).
    - Very unusual in sentence and paragraph structure.
    - Runs at about 50:50 random world history at the time to actual information about Ford
    - Information about Ford is not well organized, very loose and starts late in his life
    - It skips around in years
This is the first time I have wanted to return an audible book. Please, please avoid this title.

What made the experience of listening to Jack and Suzy Welch at the 92nd Street Y the most enjoyable?
The straight talk from Jack Welch was very good. Would prefer to have the topic of politics not enter the discussion... but it is worth listening to that to get the business gems from these two.

His ensuing creation of General Motors essentially invented modern-day corporate America, gaining and losing him three fortunes in the process.

Creating Billions in Just 15 Years !!!
When Money Is King: How Revlon's Ron Perelman Mastered the World of Finance to Create One of America's Greatest Business Empires, and Found Glamour, Beauty, and the High Life in the Bargain, by Richard Hack
This is a great book to gain an understanding of how a one man force can create a multibillion-dollar empire in just 15 years through buying, selling and restructuring companies at a frenzied pace. This book is similar to most of the books I have reviewed both on Amazon and on my blog (at - bloglines.com/blog/KevinKingston ) in that an empire builder (Ron Perelman in this case) has the common characteristics of a super achiever, he is: drive, has tremendous courage and confidence and he has the all important understanding of the importance of cash flow.
The book starts out by explaining how Ron's relationship with his father was all about business, balance sheets and cash flow while growing up. He would sit in on board meetings with his father starting at age 11 and study financial statements after school instead of playing ball.
In 1961 as his freshman year in college came to an end he pursued a buy out of a Pennsylvania family owned Brewery for $800,000. Three years later his father and he sold it for a profit of $1,000,000. This deal gave him the adrenaline rush on which entrepreneurs thrive. The victory was sweet-and-addicting. Ron was hooked! He then married into a $100 million dollar fortune and it's deal mania from then on.
The key to Ron's success is the use of leverage, the understanding of cash flow and his ability to see and create value where others don't. It is no small task to take in money (Milken money) at a cost, in the area of 14.5% through the issuance of junk bonds and put it to work buying business that can not only pay the heavy debt load but generate handsome profits as well. This is really the key to most great fortunes, to understand how to borrow money and put it to work so it creates cash flow and builds equity over time.
The details of the corporate takeover battle for Revlon is a must read for those interested in finance. A deposition of Ron on pages 193-204 regarding a law suit by a former executive is totally comical. When asked a few questions his answer was. "I'm not going to tell you". This set the tone for the deposition and also gives you a sense of Ron's personality.

    Language: English

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
Acclaimed historian Edward J. Renehan, Jr. - author of Dark Genius of Wall Street - draws upon previously unreleased documents to deliver the definitive biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the 19th-century transportation tycoon who accumulated the largest private fortune in U.S. history. This is the definitive biography of a man whose influence on American business was unsurpassed in his day - or any other.
©2007 Edward J. Renehan Jr.; (P)2008 Recorded Books
    Critic Reviews:
"Vanderbilt's personal life is fascinating; highlights include the Vanderbilts' grand tour of Europe, his lifelong penchant for prostitutes (including the Woodhull sisters, whom Vanderbilt made the first female brokers on Wall Street) and the syphilis-induced madness that plagued his final years - material new in this biography and a testament to Renehan's typically assiduous research." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    An odd biography
Cornelius Vanderbilt was, with John Jacob Astor, the first millionaire industrialist in America. Both men accumulated their millions, and contributed mightily to US industrial development, long before the "takeoff" period in the US economy, which took place in the decades after the Civil War, and took the US to preeminent status among the world's developed countries by 1900. This book suffers alittle because Cornelius was not that interesting as a person, not all that colorful, but that is offset by the new material the author brings forth about steamships, railroads and corporations in the period from around 1810 to 1860. This is a little known and little studied period, so I think it can open the eyes of many readers.
Because the book is more corporate & economic history than biography, it does not click along like many biographies ... it does not have a potboiler or gossipy base. And even I, a lover of economic history, missed some of that. But I do think it is worth reading if you are interested in US history and in US economic development.
The author did great with a mundane subject
Cornelius Vanderbilt had an iron will, was aggressive and fearless in business, and was an extremely hard worker. Other than that he really had few redeeming qualities. His business ventures are more interesting than the man himself, and the author rightly focuses and that subject. It was Cornelius' son who actually created the vast bulk of the Vanderbilt wealth and built the massive railroad empire that Cornelius would come to be historically associated with. Nevertheless, this book is worth a listen. It does a great job showing the ruthless battleground of business that early American entrepreneurs battled in.
Interesting Life of a Robber Baron
I enjoyed this book, the first I have listened to, on the life of the Vanderbilt Patriarch. The narrator's performance was enjoyable and he was easy to understand. The book focused on life from the protagonists view and most of the time characters who were closely associated with him - either in business or personal life. Negative views of opponents were shared, but the majority of the information shared seemed to be neutral or positive.
Overall, the author accomplished their goal to provide information on his life and did so in a meaningful way.
