Cover art and title tell you all you need to know about innovation at NBC

Bob Wright is clearly worried about his legacy. That he would spend 400+ pages propping himself up, tearing down GE and others (who he once defended to the detriment of many), congratulating himself on his own âboldâ ideas and actions while getting his old cronies to deliver painfully effusive eulogies on his behalf, is, in the end, rather telling. Instead of being the definitive story of how one man presided over a television entityâs revolutionary change, this book smacks of someone intent on gilding the story of his own professional reputation that has, to date, largely been ignored by media and business historians.

Itâs all so unnecessary. As someone who was actually THERE...on the front lines of Bob's early transformation of NBC for more than a decade, I knew Wright to be a smart and decent guy, but hardly the leadership icon he attempts to portray himself as in this memoir. I got a real laugh at the revisionist history he and his âtrusted colleaguesâ have put forth in this book about the media initiatives and deals they claim to have simply made happen at NBC during this period.

A Biography the Leads to Insight

This biography of Herb Greenberg does an excellent job of using his story to help bring out one's own authentic self. It is well-written and well-edited, and a pleasure to read. I left off one star because the book assumes that every reader holds theories of psychology with the same level of "faith" as the author and the subject. I found much to apply, but have misgivings on some psychological theories, so some sections didn't resonate with me. Whether you're from Brooklyn or not, it's worth the read!

What's Your Leadership Story?

The story of Herb Greenberg, founder of Caliper, will inspire you to reflect deeply on your own leadership story. Patrick Sweeney is a master storyteller: At times What You Arenât Seeing reads like a juicy novel and at other times it reads like a Harvard Business School case study. I found myself answering the reflection questions at the end of each chapter to uncover my own leadership story. If you are a coach, you will also find the questions useful in helping your clients search inside themselves for their own leadership story.

I must admit I was skeptical when I first scanned the Table of Contents and saw a chapter titled âSportsâ. As a female entrepreneur and lifelong student of leadership I often tire of sports analogies because they are typically about male teams and I don't identify with them. While there is quite a bit written about the Brooklyn Dodgers who were influential in Greenbergâs childhood, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the results of one of Caliperâs studies.
