This is not 50 Shades

I enjoyed this book when I read it in college, I enjoyed it even more a few years ago. This is classic literature, it is dark, and naughty and hot....but it is literature..not beach trash. There is nothing light or whisical about it.

The story is prefaced with a number of forwards, and literary studies on the work which I found fascinating.

The story was originally published in 1954 as Histoire d'O. It was penned entirely in french and some may find the "translation" difficult. The writer, Anne Desclos a french author and journalist, wrote the book because her editor said no woman could write erotica. She did not reveal herself as the author until 40 years later.

I enjoyed the audible edition, and truly appreciated the forwards, but it will not be for everyone.

Would you listen to Story of O again? Why?

Definitely, the story of O is a complex one but well worth the listen and read! I do recommend going in with an open mind and trying your best to not form an opinion until the very end. This story seems like one that helps you further develop your thoughts of the story, characters,and concepts with every additional read.

What other book might you compare Story of O to and why?

As so elegantly stated in the introduction, this was the first erotica book written by a women! The better question is what books would I compare to O. The whole idea of the possession can be seen as an extreme version of the Crossfire novels. To be noted, there are plenty of differences between the Crossfire and O but if open to see it, you can also find similarities.

Which scene was your favorite?

An unforgettable part in the book was the branding of Sir Steven's name on O, and the way they attached the leash for the ball.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

In the beginning I was very offended and at times upset but once O explained herself and her feeling and reasons my reaction turned to respect. Not respect in what she allowed to happen to her, but in respect in knowing what she liked and wanted and not apologizing for it.

I truly loved the book. There are difficult parts and down right things I would never fully digest, but the story is well written, I only wish I could have enjoyed it in french.

Not sure if i would listen to it again but I am glad that I finally gave this audio a go. It's intense, disturbing, sad, and seductive.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't know if I liked any of the characters. I found Jacqueline's character to be very interesting because she was so different from O. She was not so willing to bend and while O called her selfish, Jacqueline had a sense for self preservation.

I have read all but one kings book when I finish writing this I will be reading the last oneâI love the Kings books cause the stories are well written n different. They believe in family, honor n hard working. The King men play hard too with the ladies but they always get thrown for six when they lease expected. In this story Rafe King finds real love after even after his divorce. Love comes when u lease expected. Believe n it will happen.â

Really sweet.

I am really loving this series. Ms. Child makes her characters as believable everyday people, with everyday problems. Yes, the Kings might be very rich, but every single one of them worked very hard to build their own empires. I also like the fact that her female characters, for the most part, are women who know how to stand on their own two feet. They may not be rich and famous, but they do have jobs and aren't push-overs by any means.

As usual, Ms. Child has written another page-turner. Rafe King, pretending to be a carpenter after losing a bet to Joe, meets and falls in love with Kathie ( The Kookie Lady). She is on the rebound from Cordell King, his cousin, and states emphatically at their first encounter that she detests every rich male with the surname of King. So Rafe alters his from King to Cole ( get it the nursery rhyme or Nat 'King Cole' LOL!). Their romance blossoms, while he tries to change her feelings about the 'Kings'. His deceit is naturally detect by her on a chance encounter with her ex, Cordell, thereby breaking her heart again. Her wise Nana points out that she needs to fight for him or at least hear his explaination, which she does. And they kiss, make-up and get hitched in the end.

Great plot, wonderful characters and humorous dialogue. Another great 'beach read'!

King 's Million-Dollar Secret

I really enjoyed reading this book. You don't need to read the rest of the King books to enjoy any of them. So far I've only read 3.

In a nutshell, the only thing good about this book is that it's short, so the torrment is over quickly. And, accidentally, it's so bad--the writing & the narration--that it's funny at times. This book sounds like a young teen's first attempt at writing an adult-focused book when he/she has only read books up to the 10th grade level, first attempt at writing sex scenes without ever having experienced sex, and first attempt at writing about BDSM after reading about it in a mens magazine and understanding none of it. For instance, readers are to buy the line that the main female character has sex that's so good that she's willing to agree to a life-changing decision. Really?! And then when she learns that he's a wolf during sex, she's not pressed b/c the sex is soooo good. Really?! And Elijah is an alpha male, but he won't "force" his mate to become part of his pack. What kind of alpha is that? What kind of wolf is that?

On the narration: The main male charcter, Elijah, and one of his friends named, DeShaun, are played by the narrator as males with the most red-neck sounding voices. This, even though Elijah is of mixed race, one of them being Hispanic and part of a family that's very in touch with their heritage. It's not impossible, especially if they were southern. But it seems unlikely that those two characters would sound like the last governor of Mississippi. And the narrrator sounds like shes faking it all the way through. And she can't read AT ALL! She mispronounced wanton, miniscule, permeated, wherewithall, and cataclysmic. That's a lot in a book that lasted an hour. And when I say mispronounced, I mean really. Cataclysmic was pronounced as catacaclysmic. I know; go ahead and laugh. And wherewithall was read as whetherall. I had to rewind to make sure I got it right. This book just proves that anyone can get a book published.

This is my first short book purchase so I wasn't expecting a great plot but I did think the sexual encounters were probably going to be good. I was WRONG. This was a complete waste of money and time.

Superb Reader/Actor

The Marketplace books have been a series that I have long looked forward to owning on audio. When Laura announced to her friends and fans that she had made an agreement with audible to release The Marketplace I did a dance of joy and eagerly anticipated the release.

Although anticipating the release, I have been praying that the reader/actor would do justice to this book. I have occasionally been disappointed when I have purchased the audio version of a favorite book after finding what I considered a well written book had been ruined by the audio presentation. The result was the urge to turn it off within the first couple of chapters.

Upon downloading and beginning to listen to this favorite, I was happy to hear a beautiful british accent and someone that appears to understand the nuances and this material. I look forward to hearing the other books in the series as they become available.

What did you like best about this story?

I've always enjoyed this series, and I am delighted to hear it with this delicious English accent! It's the perfect sound for this incredibly intriguing story. If you've never really read or listened to anything with a BDSM theme, you should know that this is more than just a kinky story. The characters are compelling, and it's incredibly funny. If all you've ever read is Fifty Shades of Gray, then hey, I have no judgment, but you should really dip your toes in these well-written waters. It's hot, AND smart! And if you are fan of BDSM themed stories, then you don't need to read this review-- you have already read all these books, because these are the best in the genre. But still, you've got to give this a listen-- the narrator's voice adds a truly tasty dimension to this favorite series of mine.

Her Promotion

There is only one thing I did not like about this book, I wanted more. It was very tasteful and honest and extremely sexy. I have read a few different BDSM books and this author by far has been the best. I got this first one for free and after reading it had to purchase the other two. It definately left me wanting to experience more.

Arousing BDSM Enters the Office

Mixing business and pleasure is at the heart of Her Promotion, and Michaels has woven an effective and arousing piece. Tori and her powerful boss are believable characters both in and outside the bedroom. There are also a couple conflicts brewing beneath the surface, namely the nature of Tori's promotion, and her uncertainty about BDSM.

Her superior and dom-in-waiting, Ashburn, is far more experienced than she is. This dichotomy is a nice departure from many erotica tales, where the domination and submission seems to happen pretty mechanically. This isn't the case in this story. Here, the budding relationship and sizzling sex happens rather organically, which is true to life, but the set up remains fantastic enough to suspend your beliefs, which is what I'm looking for in my erotica.

Better yet, Michaels incorporates a few fascinating elements rarely seen in other stories. A secret passage, for one, adds to the atmosphere wonderfully.

The BDSM in Her Promotion is tasteful and authentic. Those into humiliation and hardcore pain will want to look elsewhere. However, if you're like many in the lifestyle, you'll love the way Tori takes her lover's blows and discovers that there is pleasure in discipline. The safe word she has available to escape at any time makes her submission more powerful too.

All in all, I enjoyed this dirty short, and I'm glad to see that it looks to be the opening salvo in a series. Once you've watched Tori blossom into her new role, chances are good that you'll want more. I know I do.

A very sexy intro to the BDSM lifestyle

This story held my attention from word one until the end. The characters are wonderfully believable and well written, with a gentle writing style that is never intrusive or jarring.

We pass seamlessly from the set-up to the moment where Tori's boss is outed (as far as his participation in BDSM) and it's done in a way that could have been such a terrible cliché. Instead, the writer neatly sidesteps the potential problem and does so in a way that is positively intriguing (with a perfect reveal as Tori and Daniel embark on her initiation in BDSM).

I highly recommend this story. It is sexy as can be, depicting introductory aspects of BDSM with sensitivity and a faithful adherence to the reality of the BDSM lifestyle. You can just feel it as Tori experiences each new step in her initiation and one has no doubt that the author is certainly writing from experience.
