All Misunderstandings, Cross-purposes, Ugh!!

This story was saved by its good narration. It tells the tale of the antagonistic getting together of Lady Jayne and Lord Ledbury. Both are on the marriage mart and see each other as non-options for matrimony. The antagonism between insulated and beautiful Lady Jayne and military man, Lord Richard Ledbury resulted in engaging repartee that brought a slight smile to my face at various points throughout the story. But it wasnt enough.

The authors attempt to make listeners feel pity or something for Jayne due to her upbringing was completely insufficient to that end. It was a joke and failed to make Jayne more likeable or viewed as a sympathetic character. And the story was a bit ridiculous at points in large part b/c the misunderstandings went on too long. And then Richard was far too sappy at the end as the story came full circle all-too suddenly. It was wrapped up all-too quickly and neatly.

Finally, WHY WAS THIS BOOK LISTED IN EROTICA? IT WAS SOOOOO FAR from any kind of erotica. I think it had about 2 kisses, and one sex scene near the end of the book. This same book is also listed in Romance/Historical, so maybe an error was made. I felt duped.

Totally irritating and boring.

Another Fabulous installment to Author Felica Fox's Series "Sext".

Lots of hot Juicy Dirty Sex!

Lauren is feeling a bit insecure because she is older and more established than Marc but she is pushing those feelings aside to see where this goes. Marc has a job opportunity that will take him away from Lauren but he is in no way jumping at it- Love is more important to him however Lauren is afraid he will resent her. Ending leaves you wanting more!

Wow! Ferris Wheel Fun

Marc and Lauren are really developing a fun exciting relationship as the characters develop. Lauren's insecurities seem real. Marc's take charge attitude makes him manly even with the age difference he knows just when to push. I am not sure about the thoughts Lauren is having about doing a threesome I think it would be harmful to the relationship. I am anxious to see what happens with Marc and his job now that he has picked Lauren over his career. I am ready for part 3.

Breaking free

As we get to know more about Lauren and Marc, Felice Fox hits on the right combination of lust and anxiety as their world becomes a reality. The sex is hot and risqué, and the anticipation of them being together really gets your heart pumping. I can't wait to find out where they go from here. I can feel something's up!

The sex is defiantly on the raunchy side and there is a lot of it.

One could be so lucky to be able to let go like Lauren has. Lauren comes to terms with Marc's lifestyle and discovers something about herself along the way. Marc thought he wanted "things" in the bedroom but really he discovers he only wants Lauren.

One of LB's stronger early efforts

This was Lawrence Block's fourth or fifth book, published in 1960 while he was still in college, and it has several things to recommend it.

The protagonist Dan Larkin was an aspiring author, like Block himself, and it was downright eerie how many aspects about Dan's fictional life would end up paralleling the arc of Block's own life over the next 25 years: the progression from obscure pulp writer to eventual best-seller stardom, the women, the binge drinking, and the eventual spiral into alcoholism. Block addresses these similarities briefly in his afterword, only saying he didn't know at such a young age where his life's journey would end up.

Second, there are flashes of some really good writing. The narrator's voice resembled shades of Matt Scudder at times. It didn't quite match up to the plot, which was (as Block himself notes) mostly devoid of gritty realism and tension. There was a very funny chapter detailing a ten-day drinking binge that presaged passages in After the First Death and When the Sacred Gin Mill Closes. There was a memorable scene of frank and unexpected violence during an encounter with an older woman. Above all, the author's young-eyed enthusiasm for the publishing industry and the life of being a professional writer shines through despite an affected veneer of world-weariness.

This is not a polished work of art by any means. There's a slog of wish-fulfillment sex scenes and it was kind of hard to stomach the book's attitudes about violence towards women. However, this was superior to some of Block's other early efforts.
