    Language: English

    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
A best seller in the author's native country of Estonia, where the book is so well known that a popular board game has been created based on it, The Man Who Spoke Snakish is the imaginative and moving story of a boy who is tasked with preserving ancient traditions in the face of modernity.
Set in a fantastical version of medieval Estonia, The Man Who Spoke Snakish follows a young boy, Leemet, who lives with his hunter-gatherer family in the forest and is the last speaker of the ancient tongue of snakish, a language that allows its speakers to command all animals. But the forest is gradually emptying as more and more people leave to settle in villages, where they break their backs tilling the land to grow wheat for their "bread" (which Leemet has been told tastes horrible) and where they pray to a god very different from the spirits worshipped in the forest's sacred grove.
With lothario bears who wordlessly seduce women, a giant louse with a penchant for swimming, a legendary flying frog, and a young charismatic viper named Ints, The Man Who Spoke Snakish is a totally inventive novel for listeners of David Mitchell, Sjón, and Terry Pratchett.

    stupid, adolescent
childish plot, silly characters. even for a fantasy the deus ex machina plot repairs are gimmicky
    Wonderfully mysterious
Very good book that deals with the subject of change and things that pass over time. It's a beautifully raw written fairy tale.
    Intriguing origin story
Narration really added a separate and more endearing element of story imagery to the author's carfully chosen words, characters, and setting. I was immediately drawn into our protagonist's struggle with humanity's daring dance to change and be the change we want to see in the world, more specifically in society. It takes peer pressure to the extreme while harkening the keen voice of J. Swift's "Modest Proposal" in all his satirical glory!

    Publisher's Summary:
From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Sea and Ancient Light, a new novel - at once trenchant, witty, and shattering - about the intricacies of artistic creation and theft, and about the ways in which we learn to possess one another and to hold on to ourselves. Equally self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating, our narrator, Oliver Otway Orme, is a painter of some renown and a petty thief who does not steal for profit and has never before been caught. But he's pushing 50, feels like a hundred, and things have not been going so well lately. Having recognized the "man-killing crevasse" that exists between what he sees and any representation he might make of it - any attempt to make what he sees his own - he's stopped painting. And his last purloined possession - the last time he felt the "secret sliver of bliss" in thievery - has been discovered. The fact that it was the wife of the man who was, perhaps, his best friend has compelled him to run away: from his mistress, his home, his wife, from whatever remains of his impulse to paint and from the tragedy that haunts him, and to sequester himself in the house where he was born, trying to uncover in himself the answer to how and why things have turned out as they have. Excavating memories of family, of places he's called home, and of the way he has apprehended the world around him ("no matter what else is going on, one of my eyes is always swiveling toward the world beyond"), Ollie reveals the very essence of a man who, in some way, has always been waiting to be rescued from himself.

Such an intimately scathing critique of the modern ontological crisis, in all its ridiculous self consciousness, that is both symptom and effect, can only be portrayed by one as gifted(and afflicted?) as Banville.

    Publisher's Summary:
The highly anticipated release of the most personal novel by Kyung-sook Shin, who first burst onto the literary scene with the New York Times best seller Please Look After Mom.
Homesick and alone, a teenage girl has just arrived in Seoul to work in a factory. Her family, still in the countryside, is too impoverished to keep sending her to school, so she works long, sunless days on a stereo assembly line, struggling through night school every evening in order to achieve her dream of becoming a writer.
Korea's brightest literary star sets this complex and nuanced coming-of-age story against the backdrop of Korea's industrial sweatshops of the 1970s and takes on the extreme exploitation, oppression, and urbanization that helped catapult Korea's economy out of the ashes of war. But it was girls like Shin's heroine who formed the bottom of Seoul's rapidly changing social hierarchy, forgotten and ignored. Richly autobiographical, The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness lays bare the conflict and confusion Shin faces as she confronts her past and the sweeping social change of the past half century. Cited in Korea as one of the most important literary novels of the decade, this novel cements Shin's legacy as one of the most insightful and exciting writers of her generation.

    Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Would you recommend The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness to your friends? Why or why not?
It's not an easy story to listen to as the author jumps in time frequently. However for those interested in a time and place we here little about (South Korea during the 1970s) it is worth a listen. The narrator (who may or may not be the author) gives incredible details of the time and what it was like to work and live in Seoul during that period.
    Any additional comments?
This work walks the line between memoir and fiction. Many of the background events (such as the Gwangju Uprising) are lifted straight from history and depicted in a deeply intimate manner. I honestly don't know how much of the author's story is true, and perhaps that is the point.

Interesting book, but very hard to follow. The language is so strange, you have to read every work in order to understand it. Clever, but lots of work.
Stayed with it for 50 pages
This Book of Numbers starts with zero and doesn't get far beyond that. It is the product of a respected author, but I gave up around page 50.
BOOK OF NUMBERS is a novel for people who like the postmodern literary stylings of authors such as David Foster Wallace
The CEO of a software company I used to work for once posed shirtless for a local alternative newspaper, with gold glitter covering his chest, face and long black hair. This was during the late 1990s, when the hot air balloon known as the original dot-com bubble had yet to burst. Few software leaders go to that extreme to promote their companies, but I mention this memorable act of self-promotion in case you pick up Joshua Cohenâs BOOK OF NUMBERS, read the passage in which the head of a Google-like Internet search company strips off his kasaya robe and neoprene wetsuit to greet a visitor naked, and think: Thatâs more than a little farfetched. It is, but not as far as you might think.
BOOK OF NUMBERS is a novel for people who like the postmodern literary stylings of authors such as David Foster Wallace. If you loved the encyclopedic writing of INFINITE JEST or the detailed catalogue of corporate speak in stories such as âMister Squishyâ from OBLIVION, then youâll enjoy BOOK OF NUMBERS, a big, rambunctious novel that delights in detailed descriptions of just about everything. The writing is exuberant throughout but is most vivid in the 250-page middle section that chronicles the companyâs rise and is the memoir of the firmâs wetsuit-shedding leader.
Joshua Cohenâs novel is the story of two characters named Joshua Cohen. One is the bookâs narrator, a mid-list novelist whose one novel came out on September 10, 2001, to much hoopla: a book party in which â[c]opies of the book were piled into pyramidsâ; where Finnity, Cohenâs editor, âall prepped, Harvard vowels and Yale degree,â talks about his authorâs âmigrant storyâ but mispronounces all the Hebrew words; and where party attendees do lines off the blurbs on the back of the book. Itâs a huge celebration, until the events of the next morning bring the party to an abrupt end.
Because of the events of September 11, 2001, the book sells poorly.

    Extremely Predictable
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really well spent. I knew what was going to happen before it happened. Too preticable.
If youve listened to books by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke before, how does this one compare?
    I've not and I don't think I would.
What didnt you like about Amy McFaddens performance?
The narrator was really bad. Her accent was odd. Very annoying. Her male voices were absolutely awful.
Did The Status of All Things inspire you to do anything?
Not read anything else by this narrator
    Any additional comments?
I think this should have been in the teen genre. Very immature and predictable. I COULD NOT get passed the narrator. I don't think I even finished. I just skipped around toward the end and got the jist of it. $24 was way too expensive for this!
    Perposterous, annoying
You prefer literature but you're not a snob. Occasionally you enjoy a lighthearted "beach read"; you may even dip your toe into the dreaded pool of chick-lit on occasion. Sometimes you're pleasantly surprised, as in the case of Bridget Jones' Diary, for example. Liane Moriarty does a good job delivering a great story, too.
Not so with this book. It serves up everything that makes you roll your eyes about chick-lit. Not only is the story utterly preposterous in the way a Hallmark channel Christmas movie, but even more annoying.
The narrator's voice, first of all... a counterfeit Joan Cusack with none of the charm or personality.
I finished this one only because i'd used all my credits and returns for the month. So it SI better than nothing I guess, but not by much. I did need to shit it off many times because i got so irritated by it.
    great from start to finish
    Any additional comments?
Man oh man...I loved this book...from cover to cover. I think that Fenton and Steinke are quite the team. They have a way to write a perfectly blended stories that are engaging, original and so much fun to read. But it is more than that. The Status of All things also is a book that makes you think, reflect and make changes in your own life. It is pure genius and I highly recommend it to all! 5 stars
    Cute but extremely predictable
A nice light listen, but 100% predictable. Characters were fairly well developed, but just so cliche. I wouldn't say it was a waste of a credit, but I also wouldn't listen to it again.
    Utterly engrossing and captivating premise
Would you listen to The Status of All Things again? Why?
No, but that is only because I prefer to only listen to books once.

After numerous affairs and failed relationships, the restless Uncle Benn seeks a settled existence in the form of marriage - but tying the knot again opens the door to a host of new torments. Benn's erotic tendencies and disastrous relationships lead him and Kenneth into a hilarious and wonderful romp through America's mind-body dilemma - a journey in which Kenneth must also examine his own shortcomings with women.

    Bought for future reading
I bought this book to add to my Saul Bellow collection. I expect to read this book in due course.
Not the best Bellow- but every Bellow has something good
I felt a certain tiredness in this work, a certain contrivance of a kind I did not feel in the most gripping Bellow works, Herzog, Seize the Day, Henderson the Rain King. But I also felt that old Bellow gift for inspired insight into life, a kind of reflectiveness on the everyday which makes a poetry of ' seeing'. The story here of the aging botanist in disappointed love as told by his botanist nephew does not in my judgment touch us in the deepest way .It's not the greatest Bellow but every Bellow has much to give.
On the vulnerability of the intellectual in the real world
An man long devoted to intellectual pursuits comes down from his ivory tower in a final bid for love, but finds himself defenseless in the real world, where people do not understand him but are happy to harness his prestige for their own purposes. Benn Crader is a world famous botanist, but he also is a soft-hearted man, as you will know when you encounter the quotation that includes the book's title. Will the great scientist protect his special intellectual gifts, or will he allow the pressures of his new, very materialistic adopted family to destroy him? It's a great premise for a novel, and Bellow covers many, many of its implications and takes the story to a logical yet surprising ending. Bellow's narrator, Crader's admiring nephew, often takes off on tangents to ruminate on current events, the contemporary intellectual scene and various intellectual pursuits. Some of these tangents seem to fit into the story better than others, and once in a while I got frustrated and found myself paging ahead to see when he would stop ruminating and start telling the darn story again. Yet Bellow's intellectual meanderings include many interesting observations about life, and taken as a whole, they help to build a textured world around the story. "More Die of Heartbreak" is not a literary classic, but it is worth reading.
Another Bellow Surprise: Turning the Tables Men vs Women
Just when you think that you understand Bellow, this book comes along. By the way, do night buy this book, there is a newer version from Penguin in 2003 with a better introduction: ISBN 0142437743
I am a Bellow fan, read all of his novels, and wrote an Amazon guide: "A Guide to Reading Bellow." The present book is excellent.

A Gentle Tale of Country Life That Draws You In
    Any additional comments?
This is a tale which beguiles and grows on you slowly. It draws you in, after a slow start, until you realise that you have become emotionally invested in the story and the characters, way more than you would have imagined after the first couple of chapters.
The story starts and ends with the same accident, so that the end explains the beginning. In beteweentimes the narrative explores the characters involved in the accident and their relationships to one another and to the countryside in which they live.
The narrative is slow and gentle and full of references to the English countryside and how modern-day life there has been shaped by the past. It is also about town v country, consumerism v the simple life and the effects on peoples' lives when they fail to communicate. It explores how people are either shackled by the past or mourn for it (with respect to family life and the way in which country life and country-based occupations have irrevocably altered).
All-in-all a deceptively good book. The more I think about it, after a week spent pondering on what it was all about, the more I really love it. I will definitely read more of Melissa Harrison's work on the strength of this book.
    Disappointing
Would you try another book written by Melissa Harrison or narrated by Gareth Bennett-Ryan?
Having really enjoyed Clay I was disappointed in this book. I do like the way she writes about nature and interweaves descriptions with the story but it didn't help to redeem the book overall.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The ending which I found deeply depressing. Because the whole book is also melancholy this was the last straw.
What aspect of Gareth Bennett-Ryans performance might you have changed?
    It was a bit monotone
