    Chick flick
I am learning Spanish and I was looking for some easy read, that would capture me, so I don't have to push myself through it. If you have some intermediate level of Spanish, and probably a female, this is great for your reading in Spanish. I am 50 year young and I could relate to many of the stories. Although stories are from women of different ages. Chilean slang didn't bother me, as one the readers complained. The author is from Chile, she writes about women living in Chile, what would you expect??? You just Google a word and get familiarized with this country Spanish particularities. I wish those stories would keep coming. I didn't want this book to end. I just loved it!!! Another book that I would recommend is Sexperiencias. I will write a review on that book.
Y había amado a mi vez".
    Diez mujeres...excelente novela.
    I enjoyed the book
I enjoyed the book, I have read other books by Marcela Serrano that I have enjoyed more. I didn't like the structure of this book, the 10 women whom I met in the book, were well developed characters but not memorable.

    A potent moment in time
I found this book captivating - the vivid descriptions, especially of India/Pakistan as it moved toward independence were evocative and informative. I love well-researched historical fiction where I can gain new perspectives and understanding. This book did not disappoint - though I found the content quite different from what I expected based on the publisher's description. The narration was terrific as well. A rich experience.

    Five Stars
Kipling captured the English Rahj quite well. This time is long gone, but it was still an interesting culture.
Oh East is East and West is West...
Like the Kipling poem that supplied my title, the novel Kim represents a counterpoint of East and West. The two main characters, British orphan Kim and the Tibetan monk, represent polar opposites -- youth and age, worldliness and otherworldliness, intrigue and detachment, Western and Eastern civilizations, religions, and world-views -- and yet they become friends, develop a relationship of mutual respect and help each other accomplish their objectives.
Rudyard Kipling is well known as an author of boys' adventure stories, and while Kim can be read as such by younger readers it is much more than that. Traditional views of Kipling, that he was an apologist for the British Empire who despised the "lesser races" that made it up, are likewise not entirely just. In this novel he brings many threads together, with India a sort of third character -- a complex India with many ethnicities and cultures living in close proximity under the benevolent rule of the British Raj. His encyclopedic knowledge of those many cultures comes out with incredible wealth of detail, as well as frequent use of words borrowed from Farsi, Sanscrit, Hindi, and Arabic, some of which have since become part of the English language, but many of which will be new to the American reader. If you haven't read Kim yet, you should -- it's entertaining and also has a humanistic and moral theme -- that humans are more alike than different, -- just like the Ballad of East and West.
This particular version has a helpful Foreword by an English professor that brings out the scholarly view of the work. Type is legible for a paperback of only slightly more than "pocketbook" size. The only criticism I have of the production of the book is that footnotes at the bottom of each page, properly numbered, would have given an appropriate Victorian feel to the book as well as being much easier on the reader. As it is, all those unfamiliar words have to be looked up in the back of the book, requiring much riffling through pages, and even then, they aren't divided up by chapter, but under page number headings.
Kim by Kipling: the touchstone for 200 years of spy novels
Kipling's KIM is perhaps the best spy novel of the last 200 years. It is strikingly contemporary in its portrayal of the dark and dirty side of the spy game, its robust understanding of India, and its honest respect for the myriad ethnic differences of that complex nation. The darker works of John le Carre such as THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD come close to matching the weltshmertz but not the grit and sophistication of Kipling's presentation of the Great Game as it was played in India. KIM paints a world in which no one can be trusted and any, even children, may be sacrificed to advance government policy.
The reader would do well to do a little research into the Great Game, the first Cold War, an espionage battle between Britain and Imperial Russia between the early 1800s and the Russian Revolution (and in fact, until India's independence in 1947). Generations of British spies earned their bones in the Great Game, and the lessons they learned shaped British intelligence through the Cold War. Many have tried to convey the utter creepiness of espionage at the street level.

    Language: English
    Release date: 03-01-16
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
The author of the critically admired, award-winning A Replacement Life turns to a different kind of story - an evocative, nuanced portrait of marriage and family, a woman reckoning with what she's given up to make both work, and the universal question of how we reconcile who we are and whom the world wants us to be.
Maya Shulman and Alex Rubin met in 1992, when she was a Ukrainian exchange student with "a devil in [her] head" about becoming a chef instead of a medical worker, and he was the coddled son of Russian immigrants wanting to toe the water of a less predictable life.
Twenty years later Maya Rubin is a medical worker in suburban New Jersey, and Alex his father's second in the family business. The great dislocation of their lives is their eight-year-old son Max - adopted from two teenagers in Montana despite Alex's view that "adopted children are second-class".
At once a salvation and a mystery to his parents - with whom Max's biological mother left the child with the cryptic exhortation "don't let my baby do rodeo" - Max suddenly turns feral, consorting with wild animals, eating grass, and running away to sit facedown in a river.
Searching for answers, Maya convinces Alex to embark on a cross-country trip to Montana to track down Max's birth parents - the first drive west of New Jersey of their American lives. But it's Maya who's illuminated by the journey, her own erstwhile wildness summoned for a reckoning by the unsparing landscape, with seismic consequences for herself and her family.
Don't Let My Baby Do Rodeo is a novel about the mystery of inheritance and what exactly it means to belong.

such a terrible reader it's not even worth it
Don't let authors read their books. They are not actors. I have no idea if this is a good book because the read is so boring and thin and annoying. Writers should write and actors should act. To take the cheap way out and have a writer read his own book was a very bad decision. He could not be worse. Again, it might be a good book, but who wants to stick around and find out with a read like this
Nearly ruined by Author reading his own book.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would not recommend this audio book because the reading was nearly intolerable. I don't know why so many writers insist on reading their own works. They're rarely good at it. Writing is one thing, reading as performance is another thing entirely. Mr. Fishman reads the prose as if he's reading scripture, with a singsong approach that is both boring and irritating. I think this was an rather intriguing book, but I'm really not sure. The narration stood in the way.
East meets West, then heads East.
Well crafted story about an extended family. There's only one three dimensional character though. The rest seem to be two dimensional foils. No spoilers here. Listen to a sample and decide.

    Title: Native
Subtitle: Dispatches from an Israeli-Palestinian Life
Author: Sayed Kashua, Ralph Mandel - translator
    Narrator: Fajer Al-Kaisi
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
Sayed Kashua has been praised by The New York Times as "a master of subtle nuance in dealing with both Arab and Jewish society". An Arab-Israeli who lived in Jerusalem for most of his life, Kashua started writing with the hope of creating one story that both Palestinians and Israelis could relate to, rather than two that cannot coexist together. He devoted his novels and his satirical weekly column published in Haaretz to telling the Palestinian story and exploring the contradictions of modern Israel while also capturing the nuances of everyday family life in all its tenderness and chaos.
With an intimate tone fueled by deep-seated apprehension and razor-sharp ironic wit, Kashua has been documenting his own life as well as that of society at large: He writes about his children's upbringing and encounters with racism, about fatherhood and married life, the Jewish-Arab conflict, his professional ambitions, travels around the world as an author, and - more than anything - his love of books and literature. He brings forth a series of brilliant, caustic, wry, and fearless reflections on social and cultural dynamics as experienced by someone who straddles two societies.
Written between 2006 and 2014, Native is like an unrestrained, profoundly thoughtful personal journal.
