    Publisher's Summary:
"The Thirty Nine Steps" is an adventure novel by the Scottish author John Buchan. It first appeared as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine in August and September 1915 before being published in book form in October that year by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh.
It is the first of five novels featuring Richard Hannay, an all action hero with a stiff upper lip and a miraculous knack for getting himself out of sticky situations.
The novel formed the basis for a number of film adaptations, notably: Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 version; a 1959 colour remake; a 1978 version which is perhaps most faithful to the novel; and a 2008 version for British television.

... 39 steps was one part in particular that 'I' liked well as his mind began to grow back again ...
During a lot of parts of Hannay's thoughts in-side of the book and in reconstructing his thoughts to him self about the 39 steps was one part in particular that 'I' liked well as his mind began to grow back again to another bar of 'Annie Laurie; to the sound of 'Twisdon's as some kind of resemblance to the beauty of a black stone, the name isn't it,?' / And about Trafalgar Lodge the movie say's it's inside of the London Palladium. / And the movie also says that it was a woman that was skewered surprisingly with a kitchen knife in the back. When the book says that Hannay's imagination led us to believe that he had came back 4 hours past 10 and skewered the body of Scudder and then dressed Scudder into Richard Hannay's own pajamas when shooting him in the head as for Scudder was one of the guards men and the porter inside of Hannay's flat that was in-side of the new block behind Langham Place. Does this book relate to The Skin Game in 1916 (or) by any chance also the book Sabotage in 1914?? "I" enjoyed the book very much so that "I" could say that "I" loved the book, Thank You Kindly, MJQ Los Angles California.
An English Novel Pre-World War I
A good story with much detail and color to put the whole thing in a mentally visual context. Personally, I had a little difficulty understanding some of the local English vernacular, being an American. But I got the majority of the discussions and descriptions to keep the story flowing along to the end.
    A racy spy thriller!
A short novella. A racy read!
The plot revolves around a political conspiracy and the attempts of a colonial Scotsman to thwart it, after his chance encounter with the person who first detected it. Although some events seem more contrived and less likely to help the protagonist escape (I didn't trust one person he did when he was a fugitive!), this is clearly seeing it as a person in 2016 and not in the 1910s when this book is based. In fact, I believe this book was one of the first in the spy thriller genre, and clearly worth a read for that. Lastly, hearing the characters speak in my head was lots of fun (the book goes to great pains to "vocalize" local accents).
If all this doesn't sway you, this little gem is free on Kindle! What more can you ask for?
    The classic man-on-the-run page-turner
On merit, the book earns 3-stars, but for clarity of writing, pace and a publication date over one hundred years ago you have to award another star to Mr. Buchan. The plot has holes, but you don't really care.

    Publisher's Summary:
A thrilling new novel exploring the lives of a Chinese mother and her daughter who has been adopted by an American couple.
Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate - the first automobile any of them have seen - and a stranger arrives. In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking and a reticent Akha people.
Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, rather than stand by tradition she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city. After mother and daughter have gone their separate ways, Li-yan slowly emerges from the security and insularity of her village to encounter modern life while Haley grows up a privileged and well-loved California girl. Despite Haley's happy home life, she wonders about her origins, and Li-yan longs for her lost daughter. They both search for and find answers in the tea that has shaped their family's destiny for generations.
In her biggest seller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, See introduced the Yao people to her readers. Here she shares the customs of another Chinese ethnic minority, the Akha, whose world will soon change. A powerful story about a family separated by circumstances, culture, and distance, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane paints an unforgettable portrait of a little known region and its people and celebrates the bond that connects mothers and daughters.

    Stunningly compelling
I loved this so much that I implore everyone to listen, I'm sure you won't regret it.
    Another beauty by Lisa See
I have listened to a lot of Lisa See books now and this one was another beautifully written, heartbreaking and heartwarming story of women. I come away feeling educated and entertained, grateful and honoured. These characters are so rounded and deep that I feel like I know them all, like I've lived through them and like I could visit China and remember parts of the story by visiting the areas mentioned in the story. I really can't express how wonderful and powerful this book is. Please read it.
    Fantastic story!
I have longed for some armchair travel to a remote and culturally diverse place for some time, and Lisa Sees book delivered it in spades. Transported off to a different world altogether, I not only discovered the culture of the Akha people (one of the 50 ethnic minorities living in China), but learned so much about my favourite beverage tea that it has added a whole new depth to my morning cuppa of Chinese Jasmine tea. See seamlessly blends facts and fiction, educating the armchair traveller as the story progresses and adding depth to her characters. I fell in love with Li-yan, and felt quite bereft when the book ended. Li-yans journey from her simple and yet culturally rich life in the remote mountain village in Yunnan to being confronted with all the trappings of 20th century life was fascinating. I often tried to put myself in her shoes, thinking how strange it must feel to come from a place without cars and electricity, and suddenly having to learn her way around a computer, catch a plane, drive a car.

    Publisher's Summary:
The last time Tess de Vere saw William Benson, she was a law student on work experience. He was a 21-year-old, led from the dock of the Old Bailey to begin a life sentence for murder. He'd said he was innocent. She'd believed him.
Sixteen years later Tess overhears a couple of hacks mocking a newcomer to the London Bar, a no-hoper with a murder conviction, running his own show from an old fishmonger's in Spitalfields. That night she walks back into Benson's life. The price of his rehabilitation - and access to the bar - is an admission of guilt to the killing of Paul Harbeton, whose family have vowed revenge. He's an outcast. The government wants to shut him down, and no solicitor will instruct him. But he's subsidised by a mystery benefactor, and a desperate woman has turned to him for help: Sarah Collingstone, mother of a child with special needs, accused of slaying her wealthy lover. It's a hopeless case, and the murder trial, Benson's first, starts in four days. The evidence is overwhelming, but, like Benson long ago, she swears she's innocent.
Tess joins the defence team, determined to help Benson survive. But as Benson follows the twists and turns in the courtroom, Tess embarks upon a secret investigation of her own, determined to uncover the truth behind the death of Paul Harbeton on a lonely night in Soho. True to life, fast-paced and absolutely compelling, Summary Justice introduces a new series of courtroom dramas featuring two maverick lawyers driven to fight injustice at any cost.

    Excellent excellent excellent
This is my first 5 star review and I've been listening to audible books for 7 years! This story was clever interesting emotional. Characters and plot well drawn. Better than any court room drama I've read. Especially good as it has been written by a barrister so you feel it is based upon genuine procedure. Narration complimented the story well. I have genuine remorse that the next book hasn't been written yet!
Best book for a very long time. And I'm 67.
LIke other reviewers, I couldn't put this down. It's clear, fast paced and sounds good.
Hope this is first of a series!
Really pleased to have found this author and only did so because Daniel Weyman is one of my favourite narrators. It's a well-plotted story with very convincing court scenes and an intriguing main character. Some questions about him still to be answered, so hoping that there'll be a follow-up!
Recommend this book to anyone who likes legal dramas and complex characters. As always, extremely well interpreted by Daniel Weyman, who has a real gift for bringing stories to life.
    Catnip!! - where's the sequel?
Unpudownable - or rather un-stop-listen-to-able - brilliant story with excellent new characters - can't wait for the next one! I couldn't stop listening - a brilliant reader and if you like courtroom dramas this is top stuff. A slight criticism of some passages in the story - I won't tell you anything - but really, this is a thriller and you have to except some rather unbelievable passages. This does nothing to detract from the interaction between the characters or one's desperate desire for the next part of the story!
    Brief Encounters!
I think Audible have a real gem here and they really need to give it some air. This book introduces a quite unique protagonist.

    Publisher's Summary:
The unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Mohsin Hamid's How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, read by the author himself.
The astonishing and riveting tale of a man's journey from impoverished rural boy to corporate tycoon, How to Get Filthy Rich in Asia steals its shape from the business self-help books devoured by youths all over 'rising Asia'. It follows its nameless hero to the sprawling metropolis where he begins to amass an empire built on the most fluid and increasingly scarce of goods: water. Yet his heart remains set on something else, on the pretty girl whose star rises alongside his, their paths crossing and recrossing in a love affair sparked and snuffed out again by the forces that careen their fates along. The hero of the story could be any one of us, hungry for a different life. And ours too could be the fate that awaits him....
Fast paced, vivid and emotionally absorbing, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia creates two unforgettable characters who find moments of transcendent intimacy in the midst of shattering change.
'This book is a self-help book. Its objective, as it says on the cover, is to show you how to get filthy rich in rising Asia. And to do that it has to find you, huddled, shivering, on the packed earth under your mother's cot one cold dewy morning....'
    Members Reviews:
    Title misleading
Disappointed by the contents. Wasn't expecting a self help book. Avoid if you looking for fundamentals of asia
    Surprisingly tender
This is an unusual novel, written in the second person in the guise of a self help book. Though the structure is initially alienating, the story breaks through its constraints to become something heartfelt, tender and true.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a spring afternoon long ago, 13-year-old Wyn Davies took a shortcut through the woods in her New Hampshire hometown and became a cautionary tale. Now, 20 years later, she lives in New York, on the opposite side of a duplex from her ex, with their four-year-old daughter shuttling between them. Wyn makes her living painting commissioned canvases of birch trees to match her clients' furnishings. But the nagging sense that she has sold her artistic soul is soon eclipsed by a greater fear. Robby Rousseau, who has spent the past two decades in prison for a terrible crime against her, may be released based on new DNA evidence - unless Wyn breaks her silence about that afternoon.
To clear her head, refocus her painting, and escape an even more present threat, Wyn agrees to be temporary caretaker for a friend's new property on a remote Maine island. The house has been empty for years, and in the basement Wyn discovers a box of film canisters labeled "Epitaphs and Prophecies". Like time capsules, the photographs help her piece together the life of the house's former owner, an artistic young mother, much like Wyn. But there is a mystery behind the images, too, and unraveling it will force Wyn to finally confront what happened in those woods - and perhaps escape them at last.
A compelling and evocative novel with an unsettling question at its heart, T. Greenwood's The Golden Hour explores the power of art to connect, to heal, and to reveal our most painful and necessary truths.
    Critic Reviews:

    Great story and great narration!!!
Never felt bored listening to this book, it was heartwarming, suspenseful and the descriptions of places and people made it a very visual experience.
    Loved it!
I listened to this book in one day. Kept me wondering thru the whole book coming up with several outcomes
Maine accent is hard to stomach : (
First off, one more minute of the author trying to convince me of Wyn's love for her child and I'm going to scream!
Second, and most important; as a person who has lived in Maine their whole life I can promise you NO ONE talks like that!! The "Maine accent" is more a mix of Irish Canadian...yessah deah, it's like nails on a chalkboard. This means a lot to me as I LOVE Therese Plummer, one of my all time favorite narrators.
Halfway through the book now and Im still waiting for the actual plot to present itself...doubt Im going to make it to the end of this one.
    Beautifully told
This novel was everything promised but what I appreciated most about it was the insights into a victim of violence and the soul of an artist.
