A psychological mystery filled with droll humour, brilliant language and unforgettable characters.
Twenty-five-year-old Clemency James has moved from Sydney to a chilly bedsit on the other side of the world. During the day she studies for the bar by correspondence; in the evenings she gives French lessons to earn a meagre wage. When she meets Christian, a charismatic would-be actor, she can see he's trouble - not least because he's involved with an older woman who has children. She is drawn to him nonetheless: drawn into his world of unpayable debts and wild promises.
First published in 1960, The Catherine Wheel is Elizabeth Harrower's third novel and the only one of her books not set in Australia. In it she turns her unflinching gaze on the grim realities of 1950s London and the madness that can infect couples.

    Title: Mohawk
    Author: Richard Russo
    Narrator: William Hope

Length: 12 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-10-18
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
An unforgettable tale of life, love and passion in a decaying mill town in upstate New York.
Mohawk, New York, is one of those small towns that lie almost entirely on the wrong side of the tracks. Its citizens, too, have fallen on hard times. Dallas Younger, a star athlete in high school, now drifts from tavern to poker game, losing money and, inevitably, another set of false teeth. His ex-wife, Anne, is stuck in a losing battle with her mother over the care of her sick father. And their son, Randall, is deliberately neglecting his schoolwork - because in a place like Mohawk it doesn't pay to be too smart.
In Mohawk, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo explores these lives with profound compassion and flint-hard wit. Out of derailed ambitions and old loves, secret hatreds and communal myths, he has created a richly plotted, densely populated and wonderfully written novel that captures every nuance of America's backyard.

A slow starter, but keep reading â the effort will be worth it.
It took me a little while to really get into reading this book. Actually had to put it down and read Empire Falls first, then I went back and read Mohawk and thoroughly enjoyed it. So don't give up, keep going and you'll find I thoroughly enjoy will read.
    Can't figure this out.
Decent read, but it leaves a lot of loose ends. Russo seems to write a lot about a small town near Schenectady that is dying and has a polluted creek. Many of the same characters with different names. This one leaves us wondering about the kid and a couple of widows. Maybe he will move to Rhode Island next?
    women
I always enjoy Russos books. Im not sure his women would act as he has them doing. I read a lot and it seems to me , few male writes can write true as far as women are concerned. They always have them acting in ways they would like instea of how they probably would.
I never go wrong reading a book written by Richard ...
I never go wrong reading a book written by Richard Russo. He is my kind of author! Thank you for not disappointing me again.
    An early attempt
This is Russo's first novel, and it feels like a first novel. Some chapters feel like MFA writing assignments, and you can tell who his influential authors are. At the same time, he already had his gift for creating believable characters and for developing conflicts that never quite fall over into melodrama. People who like Risk Pool and Nobody's Fool should go back to see where he started.

Novel shows the rougher sort can be as moral as the finer sort
I'm not sure whether losing one's ability to hear also results in loss of speech in an older child as Collins here portrays, but his characterization of so many characters in this work is worth reading. An unlearned person, in particular, steals the show in Hide and Seek..
Hide and Seek by Wilkie Collins
This book, like his others, is very readable, and keeps you reading to the end. I'm in the process of reading all of his books, and have read "The Moonstone", "The Woman in White" and others. In my opinion he's an excellent writer who keeps one interested all the way through because he adds little mysteries along the way. I read them with alacrity, one of his favorite words.
Another Great Book by Wilkie Collins
Wilkie Collins is, IMHO, greatly under-appreciated today. Known for The Moonstone and The Woman in White, he wrote a great many novels, most of which are well worth seeking out. Hide and Seek is pretty typical. It is well written and has an interesting plot and characters. It clearly follows what Collins said was his creed -- Make them laugh, make them cry, make them wait.
    Hide and Seek
A somewhat sad story of a girl that can't talk or hear and what made that her that way as well as the rest of her family history is a very good read, just when I think I have read his best he then surprises me with yet another great story.
WC's books are generally interesting with good characterization. However, he usually includes health issues as a primary part of
It is more ridiculous than one would expect, even taking into consideration the time period. Overall though, it's an enjoyable read.

    Publisher's Summary:
Chinatown, Vancouver, in the late 1930s and '40s provides the setting for this poignant first novel, told through the vivid and intense reminiscences of the three younger children of an immigrant family. They each experience a very different childhood, depending on age and sex, as they encounter the complexities of birth and death, love and hate, kinship and otherness. Mingling with the realities of Canada and the horror of war are the magic, ghosts, paper uncles and family secrets of Poh-Poh, or Grandmother, who is the heart and pillar of the family.
Wayson Choy's Chinatown is a community of unforgettable individuals who are "neither this nor that," neither entirely Canadian nor Chinese. But with each other's help, they survive hardship and heartbreak with grit and humor.

The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy
Thanks for responding quickly. I have been reading the Author Wayson Choy's writing for a few months. I was happy to find my purchase in the mail and have enjoyed the story.
    Four Stars
    good
    A gem
The Jade Peony reads as though Choy had been mulling it over in his mind for a few decades, slowly developing each line, scene, emotion, description and nuance. It reads a dream; it's heartfelt; it takes you authoritatively into Vancouver's Chinatown before and during the war -- a world most of us don't know very well. Really a set of connected short stories rather than a novel, the book lets us slowly discover the nature of relationships in one family. Nuclear, it isn't.
By comparison, Choy's later work, All That Matters, felt rushed despite its length, and somewhat thin and repetitive.
But The Jade Peony is a gem, and not to be missed. Four stars.
Poignant Story Reflects on Difficult Times
As most people know, the 1930s were as difficult for Canadians as they were for the rest of the world. But in Vancouver's Chinatown, times were especially tough for new immigrants struggling to survive economically, socially, and psychologically. THE JADE PEONY is the story of one particular family told from the viewpoints of the three youngest children (each child has a section). By using this technique, author Wayson Choy gives readers an intimate glimpse into the psyche and family life of Chinese immigrants over the span of a decade.
To those who don't know the history of Canadian Chinese immigrants, the characters might appear irrationally suspicious, wary, and racist. For those who know about the treatment of Chinese laborers brought over to work on the railway, the government head tax that permanently separated men from the families they'd hoped to bring over from China, and the attitudes of white folks in general, you'll understand where the characters' animosity comes from. Unfortunately, there's far too little back story to help readers unfamiliar with those events to fully appreciate the sentiments of people trying to cope in a world they don't know or understand and ultimately fear. Small wonder they stay in Chinatown as much as possible.
By the time WWII is well underway, Chinatown residents are learning about the atrocities Japanese soldiers are committing against people in China.

    Title: Nocturnes
Subtitle: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall
    Author: Kazuo Ishiguro
    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-28-17
    Publisher: Vintage Canada
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
In this sublime story cycle, Kazuo Ishiguro explores love, music, and the passage of time. This quintet ranges from Italian piazzas to the Malvern Hills, a London flat to the "hush-hush floor" of an exclusive Hollywood hotel. Along the way we meet young dreamers, café musicians, and faded stars, all at some moment of reckoning.
Gentle, intimate and witty, Nocturnes is underscored by a haunting theme: the struggle to restoke life's romance, even as relationships flounder and youthful hopes recede.
    Critic Reviews:
"A fine and moving collection of stories, displaying [Ishiguro's] unique combination of the sad, the stoic and the consoling. It's about failure, but it dignifies failure, and with it, the human condition. There is nobody like him." (Margaret Drabble, The Guardian Books of the Year)
"Each of these stories is heartbreaking in its own way, but some have moments of great comedy, and they all require a level of attention that, typically, Ishiguro's writing rewards." (The Observer)
"An amusing read, at times very funny.... There are a number of scenes in Nocturnes that are almost worth the price of admission on their own." (The Globe and Mail)

Wonderful, thought provoking stories. Time well spent.
    book group selection
I don't think his short stories are as good as his novels. Will know more after the book club meets.
Intriguing but a very good read
I am not a short-story lover, but I am an Ishiguro fan - his writing is so good, he makes it all work so very well! With Ishiguro there is always a twist, things are not exactly what they seem, apparently simple characters and plots turn out to be actually deep and complex, a subtle but real insight into human nature. I was really taken by the first story in particular...
    Unmemorable
Kazuo Ishiguro is one of those critically-acclaimed authors that I'm not entirely sure what to do about. "The Remains of the Day" was my only experience of him before this collection, and while I lauded the clear writing in the story, it was more about mood and atmosphere than any real plot. I thought that "Nocturnes", being a short-story collection, would have a little more oomph to it, but the stories were oddly bare.
There are five stories here, and in some ways, it's important to read them in order as they self-reference on multiple occasions. 'Crooner' is about an Eastern European guitarist working in Venice who is hired by Tony Gardner (a contemporary of Frank Sinatra) to help serenade Gardner's wife Lindy on their anniversary. 'Come Rain or Come Shine' is about a music fan named Ray who visits old college friends Charlie and Emily and ends up getting caught in the middle of their most recent marital spat. 'Malvern Hills' is the story of an up-and-coming songwriter who has taken a job at his sister's B&B and meets well-to-do performers from Switzerland. 'Nocturne' is the story of a saxophonist who is recovering from plastic surgery in a Hollywood hotel with famous socialite Lindy Gardner (yes, from the previous story) living next door. And 'Cellists' is the tale of Tibor, a Hungarian cellist who falls under the guidance of an American while spending one summer in Venice.
My biggest problem with this series of stories is that I found them more anecdotal than anything else.

Men kunstvrket krver sine ofre.

Kaspers tredje bog Det europiske forr
Would you listen to Det europiske forr again? Why?

This is a selection of works by three famous Irishmen: Oscar Wilde, W. B. Yeats and Bram Stoker. B. Yeats, which includes his famous poem "The Lake Isle of Innisfree".
There is a general introduction by the writer and actor Tim Dalgleish and other additional material. As the editor writes in the introduction:
"One should think of this little collection as if one, that is you yourself, had just walked into a pub in Dublin: You hand over a few coppers to the landlord and stand sipping your pint of the dark, black stuff. In the corner you spy three eccentric looking characters deep in concentrated conversation. As you make your way over you realise they are telling stories. One is an odd looking fellow, with untidy white hair and pince-nez, he is sonorously declaiming, in a sing-song voice, a tale of mythic, even epic, proportions... this will be a night to remember."

    engrossing read
Catherine and Mark, an artist and an architect from New York, rent a place in Sicily, partly to get away from some unpleasantness at home and partly because it seems like an idyllic place for their work. Nothing is as it seems, however. While I felt somewhat frustrated at times that information about the "unpleasantness" at home was withheld--obviously Catherine and Mark know about it--I was still engrossed in the story of what happens to them in their idyllic village.

A fun read. The author takes you on a whirlwind trip through a beautiful, haunting landscape and the minds of two people affected by it. The story is interesting and the detail is vivid. I enjoyed the descriptions of not only the exterior of the characters' place, but the interior turmoil they endured. A good read, and a good way to visit a part of the world that is rich in culture and history yet not very well-known by most people.
    Great story!
This is a good story, taking you to a part of Italy that is rarely written about, and is fascinating. The people here are as different as can be from New York City, where the main characters come from. I found the story interesting and the setting especially so.
Suspenseful, emotional, with a surprising twist
An absolutely captivating tale that is full of beautiful description and intriguing characters. Children of the Salt Road reveals much about the history of this ancient Sicilian village and its ways and keeps the reader guessing until the very last chapter. Loved it!
    Excellent read
Enjoyed the book. It is very descriptive and loved the "history" of the area. Felt like I was transported to all the places described.

    Publisher's Summary:
Montpelier Parade is just across town, but to Sonny it might as well be a different world. Working with his father in the garden of one of its handsome homes one Saturday, he sees a back door easing open and a beautiful woman coming down the path toward him. This is Vera, the sort of person who seems destined to remain forever out of his reach.
Hoping to cast off his loneliness and a restless sense of not belonging - at high school, in his part-time job at the butcher shop, and in the increasingly suffocating company of his own family - Sonny drifts into dreams of a different kind of life. A series of intoxicating encounters with Vera lead him to feel he has fallen in love for the first time, but why does her past seem as unknowable as her future?
Unfolding over a bright, rain-soaked Dublin spring, Montpelier Parade is a rich, devastating debut novel about desire, grief, ambition, art, and the choices we must make alone.
    Critic Reviews:
"Geary enters the literary arena with a bang: this debut about an unconventional love affair between a teenage boy and an older woman is unassuming but gorgeously rendered." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Unconventional Love
Irish writers are often to be admired. The rough life of those in the working class versus those who are living the posh life give us an abundance of stories. That is where we are today in this book with Sonny and Vera.
Sonny a young lad from the working class often works with his father at building trades when he is not in school. Sonny is one of his siblings who wants to go to school, even though he is often overwhelmed with school and the social class. Appearing as a rough boy, Sonny wants to be a painter. Not a housepainter as assumed by a school teacher, but someone who paints pictures. Unheard of, and he is not taken seriously.
Sonny happens to meet Vera as he and his dad are working on her house. He is quite taken with this young woman, though much older in years than he. She is lithe and beautiful, and she seems to be alone. Sonny does what he can to meet her, and falls in love. School not going well, he pins all his hopes on her.
This is a lovely story of young love in Dublin. From the working class life with nothing to look forward to, to the developing story of love. Vera has her own stories, and none to be shared willingly. This is a short book that will draw you in with its exquisite writing.
    Recommended. prisrob 12-26-17
    Beautiful coming of age
Montelier Parade is a coming of age story set in 80's Dublin told in the second person, which I usually find annoyingly precious. But read in Geary's own voice, it takes form as a memory piece, a recollection of loss and discovery that is beautiful and carries a verisimilitude that I feel might lack certain poignancy if read as text. The time was harsh and life not easy for Sonny in those days, but there is a sense that his life led during those days changed him forever. Haunting.
This is almost too good to be true.
This is almost too good to be true. Brilliantly written and a real gift to the reader. Can't wait for the Geary's next book.
    Nice First Novel
This first novel was excellent. It took me a while to get used to the third person narrative style but I did. The way Geary describes the tenderness of the fairly untamed protagonist and even less tamed female friend alone speaks for the writing.
