It's a real coup for the West except for one thing: Kurbsky is still working for the Russians. The plan is to infiltrate British and American intelligence at the highest levels, and he has his own motivations for doing the most effective job possible. He does not care what he has to do or where he has to go...or whom he has to kill.

Best Jack Higgins book in several years
I 've been a huge Jack Higgins fan for over 20 years. The last several Sean Dillon books that I've read repeated too many of the same formula elements, i.e. the boat ride to Ireland, plane landing in the sea, Blake Johnson getting ambushed, the same quote from Heidegger about resolute living and Dillon getting saved by his titanium waistcoat. A Darker Place does repeat most of these leitmotifs but it goes further and explores many new elements.
Sean Dillion is relegated to a relatively minor role. He is in the story throughout, but in the back row of the characters. My interest in the next book in the series is high because of the introduction of one or more new characters that I think can enrichen the cast of usual characters.
    Enjoy Sean Dillon
Glad Sean finally has a girl friend. He's reason I keep reading the books although he's not as prominent as he used to be. It was nice to see how Roper was injured.

    Publisher's Summary:
Castillo finds the information both infuriating and fascinating, particularly after a recent experience with two CIA traitors whose own deaths were swift and suspicious. Despite there being some similarities, though, he thinks therei??i??s something different with these new cases, something he can't quite put his finger on. At first, it's idle thought, but Castillo expects it's only a matter of time before the commander in chief assigns him and his group of troubleshooters in the innocuously named Office of Organizational Analysis to look into the deaths while all those intel agencies fight among themselves trying to put the pieces together.
Meanwhile, Castillo has problems of his own - fallout from recent missions involving a clandestine rescue of a DEA agent from South American drug runners, and the confiscation of some 50 million dollars from thieves in the Iraqi oil-for-food scandal. He's made more than a few enemies, he knows - both foreign and domestic. And then comes another back-channel message, this one delivered personally by his lethal friend, the Russian mobster arms dealer. All that has happened so far, he says, is just a warm-up for what's about to come out of the Kremlin.
Could sabers be rattling for a new Cold War? Or worse? Presidential Agent C. G. Castillo is about to find out...
Filled with Griffin's trademark rich characters and cutting-edge drama, this is another exceptional work in an exceptional series.

    Best of Presidential Agent Series
This is by far the best of the Presidential Agent series. Since Griffin's writing style is to repeat the important events of this series over and over again, new readers of the Presidential Agent series can skip earlier book of this series and start the adventures of Charlie Castillo with the Black Ops. The narrator is Dick Hill for the first 5 books who does a great job of bring the characters to life. The most recent book of this series is the Outlaws, which continues the story of Charlie Castillo and his new friends, two former Russian SVR spies. I recommend listening to that book after the Black Ops. The narrator of Outlaws is Jonathan Davis, who does a great job as well. Some reviewers have been critical of Jonathan Davis compared to Dick Hill, but I believe he does an equally great job with the characters as Dick Hill did in the earlier books of this series.
I don't know if it was the change in narrators or the addition of WEB IV as co-author, but there is big personality shift in the character of Ambassador Montvale the Director of National Intelligence, who is an arrogant *** in the Black Ops and a good guy in the Outlaws.
I have listened to all of the books in the Presidental Agent series several times and recommend the entire series as well as the Honor Bound series. Both of these series use Argentina as the site for much of the activities, since the author (WEB III) lives there for part of the year.

    Worst Listen
By far the worst read I have ever purchased from Audible. After finishing a le Carr? novel, which I enjoyed tremendously, I thought I would continue in the spy genre so I purchased this New York Times bestseller. Suffice it to say that it read like the wet dream of a 15 year old video game aficionado undergoing a testosterone storm.

When the world faces a deadly threat from a lost weapon, Lachlan Fox, disillusioned ex-Navy operative, is forced back into action. Lachlan Fox has made a career out of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a shore assault specialist in an Australian Navy Clearance Diver Team, he came up against bad guys and even worse odds. Having been discharged from the Navy, Fox tries to enjoy the quiet life, but during a visit from his best friend Alister Gammaldi, Fox's life is thrown out of balance. On a diving trip off Christmas Island the pair recover an obviously military but unidentifiable pod from the sea floor of the Indian Ocean-setting in motion a chain of events that will drag them both into the corrupt world of international politics and arms races. From East Timor and Christmas Island to Grozny, Washington to New York, Venice to Iran, Lachlan Fox is forced back into action to save the world from a deadly threat.
    Editorial Reviews:
Lachlan Fox has retired from his work as diver in the Australian Navy and is hoping to live the quiet life, but he's thrust right back into the action after he discovers a mysterious pod on the floor of the Indian Ocean. The discovery, and what it reveals, thrusts him into an international web of politics, arms sales, intrigue, and corruption, stretching from East Timor to Iran and back again. This is a dark, suspenseful tale with plenty of continent-hoping action, and performer Adrian Mulraney's distinguished baritone lends a touch of class.

    Too Much
Would you try another book from Jack Du Brul and/or J. Charles?
    Yes.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was well written with enough closure regarding all the main characters.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
The author(s) did not need to include so much adult sexually explicit material. It did nothing to cause me to want to recommend this book. Many great authors use implied concepts to express what this book stated in a blatant if not annoying way.
I kept waiting to like this book, never happened
The dialog is devoid of anything interesting. All the law enforcement people are dumb as a bag full of hair. The main character, whom you are supposed to like is a weird alcoholic that sees a woman at a formal dinner and comments on how he is becoming sexually aroused in public, and that is about it for his personality. The villein is able to kill large numbers of people associated with each other at will in public with an entourage and is impossible to spot. The president is a heroic meathead that decides, not only to ban all foreign oil imports but to also limit domestic production and cripple the entire United States and for that is treated as an heroic figure. If you have a brain, and blood is moving through enough of it so that you are not on life support you will hate this book.
    Really good book
Mercer is a great character in this book and the plot and action were great. I will definitely look for more books in the Mercer series. Very well worth my time listening to
A great story with lots of action!
The lead character of this story, Philip Mercer, has more endurance than any person I can imagine. The story takes Mercer across the North American continent to the Alaskan frontier and bordering ocean and then on to the Middle East. This story never lacks for suspense because the author entwined three simultaneous events in a global plot to disrupt environmental and energy programs. A MUST READ for 'action enthusiasts '.
    Good performance poor story line
Come on, liquid nitrogen to stop Alaskan oil pipeline. I have read or listened to all Clive Custer and Jack Du Brûl books and this one is a reach.

    Publisher's Summary:
In Jack Higgins's acclaimed best seller Dark Justice, intelligence operative Sean Dillon and his colleagues beat back a terrible enemy at an equally terrible cost. One of them was shot, another run down in the street. Both were expected to survive, but only one of them did.
As Detective Superintendent Hannah Bernstein of Special Branch lies recuperating in the hospital, a dark shadow sent by a figure from the past steals across the room and finishes the job. Consumed by grief and rage, Dillon, Blake, and Ferguson swear vengeance, no matter where it takes them. But they have no idea of the searing journey, both physical and emotional, upon which they are about to embark - nor of the war that will change them all.
Filled with dark suspense, driven by characters of complexity and passion, this is a novel that once again proves that, in the words of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Jack Higgins is the dean of intrigue novelists. He has no equal."

"Page does a credible job delivering the goods as both sides ruthlessly clash in typical Jack Higgins style." (AudioFile)

    Voices
I am very impressed with the narrators voice and enjoy the book thoroughly what I'm not impressed with is how he changed one of the characters voices the last two books that he narrated Charles Ferguson's voice went from being deep and old mannish to an Irish Scottish voice not impressed with the change for it plays havoc in my mind trying to keep up with the characters
    Another Higgins masterpiece!
Enjoyable story masterfully read and an ending with a surprise. One of my favorites. Looking forward to more!

    Suspended in mystery
Mystery, suspense, murder and intrigue. Nonstop action and plotting with never a drag. The secret organizations of the Brits, The Russians,The followers of Ossama. Wonderfully narrated. It will keep you thinking.
    Good Story, Great Narration . . . but . . .
Jack Higgins is certainly an entertaining writer (his best is probably the WWII thriller, "The Eagle has Landed") and this story, which is set in a kind of fictional alternate universe in a post-9/11 world, certainly holds one's interest. The narration by Michael Page is also expertly done -- he manages to give almost every character (especially male characters) different-sounding voices that are remarkably diverse.
The problem with the book is that it's actually intended as a continuation of a series of novels (apparently, this is no. 15) involving the character Sean Dillon. Dillon actually has a secondary role in this novel, but there are a number of places where Higgins refers to events that have already happened in other novels, and one gets the feeling of having walked in during the middle of the play. So, it's an entertaining and well-read audiobook -- but I wouldn't have chosen it if I had known it was part of a series.
Same old thing. But that's okay
With any Sean Dillon book, much is familiar. The same characters. Same descriptions. Just occasionally rearranged. In this book, Dillon and friends go to war with an international panoply of villains. For all that, it's still fun and well written. I like this narrator much more than the fellow who read the previous books.
    Technical issues
The narrator was excellent and the story good, but it was irritating that every 15 minutes or so, a small section of the book would repeat itself. Usually no more than a few lines of text, but it did not lend itself to an enjoyable read.
    Great story, Well read!
I enjoyed the plot and suspense, which made the audio hard to put down.

    Members Reviews:
Find a plot and stick with it
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Have no idea who would enjoy it.
Has Deep Black turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I love the genre and typically like the author. This book was so bad, I seriously wonder if Coonts simply received a check for allowing someone to use his name. There are five separate plot lines running simultaneously and none are wrapped up at the end. It's almost as if the author realized the story was getting long and only had one chapter left to finish the book.
What didnt you like about J. Charless performance?
Different characters require different voices, and those voices should stay the same throughout the story. I found myself on MANY occasions rewinding because I didn't realize he had switched characters. There were also many instances where the accent for a character switched in the same scene.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment.
    Any additional comments?
I listen to books while traveling. This one put me to sleep on the plane so often that I thought perhaps I didn't like it because I was only getting a few pages at a time before I'd nod off. I decided to try it AGAIN while making an 8 hr drive, thinking it would be easier to follow. It WAS easier, but only because the traffic on the freeway kept me awake.
    Great espionage thriller
Listened to by my husband: Really enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the complexity of the missions. Only complaint was that the narrator read the book way too fast, and had to slow down the playback to catch everything and everyone in the story. Planning on getting all the Deep Black Books after this first sample.
And the plot was? Did we finish? That's it?
What disappointed you about Deep Black?
There are so many sub-plots that never get tied together or wrap up that the entire book left me wondering what was the point. What happened to 'Wave 3?' What was the point of the defection of the pilot? (That entire plot line seemed worthless). Was this book about 'lasers' or the assassination? What dies any of it really have to do with Deep Black? This book was a mess of topics that never tied together.
Has Deep Black turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. But I will give the series another chance. Perhaps this (book 1) leaves alot open for the next one.
What didnt you like about J. Charless performance?
First, pick a dialect for the character and stick with it.

    Tom Clancy? 007?
Tomcat FA-18 Superhornets? A 660,000 ton aircraft carrier? The deck area of this monstrous carrier is just four and a half acres! It's more than six times the weight of a regular carrier but no bigger as to deck area. What, it extends three hundred feet down into the water? This story is Mr. Bell's attempt to write a Clancy-type thriller (he even takes Clancy's name in vain!) but the problem is he has none of Clancy's knowledge of his subject. Remember the movie ... Hidden Dragon? The characters in this silly story can do similar stunts. No, Really! And all the goofiness of the 007 movies? That is all here, too. The only good thing about this story is that the narrator is very good. He just needs a better story to narrate.
    Solid and enjoyable series.
Characters are well developed and fun. I like reading series like Mitchell Rapp and Gabriel Allon.
A Great Story minus one Important Element
Pirate is a James Bond like epic replete with international intrigue, historical references, yacht chases and much more. The story line is intricate and hard to hold onto in places. But it was kind of fun piecing the characters together with the right settings; and I didn't feel cheated making the effort -- I felt it was worth it. Throughout the book, however, with all the many characters, there was not a one who I identified with or who I cared about. That made the story a bit harder to get through.

    Publisher's Summary:
Autumn 1937: War is coming to Europe, and French and German intelligence operatives are locked in a life-and-death struggle on the espionage battlefield. At the French embassy, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-François Mercier, a decorated hero of the 1914 war, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal, and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of Warsaw.
At the same time, the handsome aristocrat finds himself in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of Polish heritage, a lawyer for the League of Nations.
Colonel Mercier must work in the shadows, amid an extraordinary cast of venal and dangerous characters: Colonel Anton Vyborg of Polish military intelligence; the mysterious and sophisticated Dr. Lapp, senior German Abwehr officer in Warsaw; Malka and Viktor Rozen, at work for the Russian secret service; and Mercier's brutal and vindictive opponent, Major August Voss of SS counterintelligence. And there are many more, some known to Mercier as spies, some never to be revealed.
The Spies of Warsaw is Furst's finest novel to date - exciting, atmospheric, and erotic.
    Members Reviews:
The Real Deal in Espionage Stories Fascinating
Lt. Col. Mercier is a complex yet loveable man, who is highly intelligent and thrust into a benign role as handler prior to WWI in Warsaw. The plot which draws him into an ever tightening circle of intrigue dovetails unexpectedly and omniously with the feel of a true story prior to the invasion of Poland during WWII. What is best about Alan Furst's books, especially this one is that you are immediately in Warsaw and Paris in Springtime, at that time at that moment, every detail, every nuance enriches the story.
If not 1st among spy rivals, a decent place/show
A robust, tight and occasionally frisky Furst novel. I am quickly approaching the end of my Furst 'Soldiers of the Night' jag and thus far it has been a fascinating experience. His character-driven novels could easily be bound into one gigantic prewar novel. They all swirl and fugue with similar themes, many of the same characters, and the same dark ambiance. He is detail oriented, historically accurate, writes well AND is one of the best atmosphere writers around. He leaves you feeling the grit, the cold, and the tongue of the WWII night. He is a first-class genre writer that while not quite in the le Carré aristocracy, is certainly in the spy-Master ruling class.
'Spies of Warsaw' is centered around a French military attaché in Warsaw who is struggling with a growing sense of urgency about the inevitable crash of Nazi Germany tanks into France and Poland, while also dealing with a satchel filled with unreliable allies, reluctant spies and self-serving superiors.
    My favorite Alan Furst novel.
Exquisite balance of compelling plot and historical fiction. Captures the intrigue leading up to the fascist expansion of the thirties and forties. And to some, a cautionary tale for today.
    What a shame!
What would have made The Spies of Warsaw better?
What a shame to ruin a GREAT series by changing narrators in mid-stream. I certainly hope it was not a money issue, because if so what a waste and what false economy.
