    Interesting, entertaining and educational
One of the reasons I love historical fiction is how much it teaches me. Not only did I learn more about the KGB, the Mossad and the production of nuclear weapons, but I was never bored and up let several nights not wanting to turn it off. As always Ken Follet delivers interesting characters in extraordinary situations.
    Old-style spy thriller
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to a friend who likes stories of cunning and intrigue over stories heavy with action and slick one-liners.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character was the Egyptian double-agent. I found his motivations fascinating. And I was very interested as he took actions that looked evil on the surface, but turned out to be necessary.
My favorite character to hate was the Egyptian spy who was working with the Russians. I found his character to be realistic and evil. The realism of him was enhanced in how I found his motivations to be completely unreasonable in my American mind, but to also be in complete agreement with many of the Middle Easterners that I have encountered in my life.
What does J. Charles bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
An Australian accent to a Cockney Englishman.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes it was. I was listening to it while I was in my workshop woodworking. When I was done, I continued to listen to it as I made and ate dinner. When I wasn't listening to the audiobook, I was thinking about it's twists and turns.
    Great Spy/Action Thriller
This book has everything a good espionage book needs. All the characters are believable and not over the top like most books these days. The book is narratted the plot is thick with intriguie esponionage and twists. All the action is gripping action. This is the type of listen you won't easily be able to stop when your commute is over
This is a follett classic and a must listen for anyone who enjoys books of this Gendre
Great story of Israel's entry into the nuclear clu
The story spans the critical years of the birth of Israel and its growth into a nuclear power.
The characters are well developed and mostly believable.

    approach it as a fable
This is not meant to be a Tom Clancy thriller. Even when trying to write what Greene called "entertainments" (versus his more literary works) to make a living, Greene is still quite deep, making moral statements with brilliant dialogue. This is also far from being one of Greene's best novels, though.
He wrote "Confidential Agent" (circa 1938-39) to put food on the table while he was working on "The Power and the Glory," but, being Graham Greene, it's not just a spy story even if that's what he was aiming for- it's kind of archetypal. The characters are not supposed to be well developed, I think, but sketches of types found in situations of injustice and rebellion and global economic disparty. You can read into it that the espionage revolves around the Spanish Civil War, but it is meant to be a generic situation. Imagine the audience for that in pre WWII England.
My problem with the audiobook is the narration --afer a few chapters I got used to it, but found it irritating at first. I am unfamiliar with the narator; he is either British and (rightly) affecting a nondescript European accent for the main character (whose nationality is not given in the novel on purpose)-- or someone using a British accent and trying to do so. In reviews of other books, I read that some U.S. listeners find some Brit accents hard to follow; if that is your circumstance, avoid this download because the narrator swallows a lot of vowels in this work, whatever his nationality.
I wish there were more of Greene's novels on this site. Audible, please give us more Greene (and his best novels) so more Americans (and Canadians like me) can rediscover the man who has been termed the "best Catholic novelist of the 20th century" (though I suspect the currrent pope wouldn't agree).
    An unexpected treasure
I had read the reviews, and was unfamiliar with the author when I decided to purchase the book. I am truly glad I did! Patrick Tull is untouchable as a narrator and his ability to impress a unique personality and breath life into an entire cast of characters is in full effect here. A touching story told by a main character who must continue after his own personal tragedies during a time of war that manages to be at once felt and experienced through these words. You will enjoy this story as it unfolds in a series of experiences, and feel all the richer by the last page. Well done!
    Worst of Greene's books
Would you try another book from Graham Greene and/or Patrick Tull?
I like Greene as an author. I just felt this book didn't have much to say and the plot was confused
What could Graham Greene have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Greene is dead - Rest in peace. There is very little he can do now to make this book more enjoyable.
How could the performance have been better?
This story needed a more youthful and compelling narrator
    You didnt love this book...

    Author: William Gibson
    Narrator: Robertson Dean
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-07
    Publisher: Penguin Audio

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Hollis Henry is an investigative journalist, on assignment from a magazine called Node. Node doesn't exist yet, which is fine; she's used to that. But it seems to be actively blocking the kind of buzz that magazines normally cultivate before they start up. Really actively blocking it. It's odd, even a little scary, if Hollis lets herself think about it much - which she doesn't. She can't afford to.
Milgrim is a junkie. A high-end junkie, hooked on prescription antianxiety drugs. Milgrim figures he wouldn't survive 24 hours if Brown, the mystery man who saved him from a misunderstanding with his dealer, ever stopped supplying those little bubble packs. What exactly Brown is up to Milgrim can't say, but it seems to be military in nature. At least, Milgrim's very nuanced Russian would seem to be a big part of it, as would breaking into locked rooms.
Bobby Chombo is a "producer" and an enigma. In his day job, Bobby is a troubleshooter for manufacturers of military navigation equipment. He refuses to sleep in the same place twice. He meets no one. Hollis Henry has been told to find him.
    Critic Reviews:
"Gibson's fine ninth novel offers startling insights into our paranoid and often fragmented, postmodern world....Compelling characters and crisp action sequences, plus the author's trademark metaphoric language, help make this one of Gibson's best." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Loved it
I listened to this on a trip to Seattle and back. I think the mood of the story goes nicely with air travel and staying in big hotels downtown in cities.
It's so moody (this is Gibson after all) and so... disconnected. In a very good way, since he pulls you into his world.
The characters will stick with you long after the story is done, even though it really gets off to a slow start. You'll end this and want to grab Zero History, which continues the story, right away.
    The Future is Marketing
GREAT, GREAT, GREAT. This book follows on to Pattern Recognition, and while it is not a direct sequel, it shares the same future (present?). Gibson has captured perfectly the future, which happens to be today. The narrative reads just like a science fiction thriller, but the science fiction devices are all things from our current world. Most importantly, everything is touched by marketing. This, of course, is why I love Gibson's recent work so much. The flavor is like PKD, there is a lot of cynicism here, with a much more consistent style. Gibson's big advantage is that he takes marketing as a key part of who everyone interprets the reality around them. Not a critical analysis of it, but a reality check--the future has arrived, and it is all about consumption.
I especially loved the dead-pan delivery of Robertson Dean, which captures Gibson prose very well.
    Boring and a disappointing ending
This novel was disappointing. I found that the final ending was really a let down. All this excitement over something that was ultimately mundane if you ask me. And the merging of the different story lines was awkward at best. The characters all have interesting starts, but the just kind of go nowhere. The references to pop and geek culture were entirely gratuitous --- especially the story about chombo. Give me a break! I'm really sorry I wasted a credit on this one.
    Great book; so-so reader
This is the Gibson of Pattern Recognition, not Neuromancer.

Canidy, Fulmar, and colleagues in the Office of Strategic Services face an even greater task than ever before: to convince Hitler and the Axis powers that the invasion of the European continent will take place anywhere but on the beaches of Nazi-occupied France. "Wild Bill" Donovan's men have several tactics in mind, but some of the people they must use are not the most reliable; they are, in fact, most likely spying for both sides-so the deceptions require layer upon layer of intrigue, and all it will take is one slip to send the whole thing tumbling down like a house of cards. Are the OSS agents up to it? They certainly think so. And then the body is found floating off the coast of Spain.

OK A SPy Novel it ain't
Having read the reviews I must agree that this is not your typcial spy novel. It probably wouldn't take more than half an hour to tell the plot of the story without missing out on anz of the facts. However, the fun for me lay exactly in the languid pace. This is NOT a fast pace spy thriller but rather a very slow description of spy work during the war. And as we should know by now spying is 95% boring preparation for 5% thrilling action. WEB gives the 95% a human face and paints a facinating picture of the characters.
    this a fraud
I have read most of W.E.B. Griffin's books. This book is not his. He might have created the outline and created the characters but the prose is by Butterworth the too many. It reads and listens like buttermilk. Don't waste your time or money and if you have, ask for a refund. A good nap would be better.
Not the Best in the Series
I have read everything ever written by W.E.B. Griffin. I started this series when it was originally published under the pen name Alex Baldwin. I say that to let you know that I am invested in these characters and their stories. This effort was a dissapointment. It lacked the usual action and suspense. The characters seemed shallow and uninspiring. The narrator had difficulty with the military titles and could never keep straight the difference between a lieutenant and a lieutenant commander. If this is your introduction to this series try another book. The Saboteurs was fun. If you have been reading the series all the way through, prepare to be dissapointed.
    Big fan of W.E.B.
I am a big fan of this author, but this unabridged version was one of those stories where I was just waiting for the good stuff to take place (some action). However it never came to pass as I was expecting. The author went into great detail about how the central character was feeling and the operation in england but when the end results came it was over before it started with little detail. Then the book ended and I was confused, I thought there should have been another few chapters of the book to have some closure. Instead I felt as if it was a sequel. If this is going to be your first W.E.B. book please choose another and wait until you're a fan for this one.
    Double Agents
I disagree with most of the reviews I have read about this book. I have really enjoyed the whole thing. To me it is interesting how the author weaves all the different characters into a triller of a story.

    Audio Triumph
This is the best audiobook I have heard. I think it is probably better as an audiobook than a text because of the incredible narration.
It is beautifully written - full of colours and textures. It is not a thriller, but grpping nonetheless.
It reminded me of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.
    mission accomplished
An absolute fantastic narrative! A totally worthwhile experience. David Oyelowos reading of the dialogs is as every character comes alive. Heres where a good audio book is far better than the printed version.
    Taught, tight writing
Nobody writes like Le Carr? - so much is conveyed in so little words. The action is cerebral, makes you read between the lines. The bad guys are despicable, the good guys are doomed lovers, the World is corrupt as usual. Excellent read.
    Superb book with brilliant reader
Set against an African background but with the action in the UK, this is a rather unusual story about a secret summit of African leaders which is bugged by MI5 and an Afro-British interpreter who is in deeper than he appears to the delegates. The cultured voice of the reader still carries his racial background in its tenor, and he is able to give dicrete voices to each speaker so the listener is never in doubt as to who is speaking. Le Carre as always gives a twisting tale, and with the end of the cold war he has found other forums for his stories. This one is excellent and believable (alas!) but it is the superb reading which makes this audiobook so engrossing and plausible.
good book, good & appropriate narrator
These folk who complain about the narrator don't get it. If they can't understand his various accents, well, I'd say that they must not venture far from home. This narrator was completely appropriate for this book and the character he enacted.
I enjoyed the book. It wasn't my favorite le Carre book, but it was good. As those who have read him before know, he doesn't adhere to a formula and requires more of his readers than do the writers of most "airplane" mysteries. This is worth a listen.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
The Day of the Jackal, The Dogs of War, The Odessa File: the books of Frederick Forsyth have helped define the international thriller as we know it today. Combining meticulous research with crisp narratives and plots as current as the headlines, Forsyth shows us the world as it is in a way that few have ever been able to equal.
And the world as it is today is a very scary place.
When British and American intelligence catch wind of a major Al Qaeda operation in the works, they instantly galvanize, but to do what? They know nothing about it: the what, where, or when. They have no sources in Al Qaeda, and it's impossible to plant someone. Or is it?
The Afghan is Izmat Khan, a five-year prisoner of Guantanamo Bay and a former senior commander of the Taliban. The Afghan is also Colonel Mike Martin, a 25-year-old veteran of war zones around the world; a dark, lean man born and raised in Iraq. In an attempt to stave off disaster, the intelligence agencies will try to do what no one has ever done before, pass off a Westerner as an Arab among Arabs, and pass off Martin as the trusted Khan.
It will require extraordinary preparation, and then extraordinary luck, for nothing can truly prepare Martin for the dark and shifting world into which he is about to enter. Or for the terrible things he will find there.
Filled with remarkable detail and compulsive drama, The Afghan is further proof that Forsyth is truly master of suspense.

    Somewhere In Between
The reviewers of this book either loved it or hated it, thought the plot profound or boring, and the reader great or dreadful. My view is that it is one of the few books that I think I would have been better off reading - and not because of the reader.
The problem with this book in audible format is that the multiple sub-plots and characters are switched between abruptly and frequently. I have to believe that in written format that there are double spaced lines or some other visual clue that would alert you to the change. In audible format I often missed those cues. Further, it is one of the worst books to "rewind" that I have ever encountered. If you had an interruption or lost concentration and tried to return to where you were in the story, it was very difficult to find the break point.
I certainly would not discourage anyone from buying this in audible format if your reading time is all verbal. If you have time to read in written format, however, I think that would be a better way to go.
    Slow Part 1 - Great Part 2
Part 1 is slow. You can start at Part 2 and it will stand on it's own as a great story.
    Reader's Voice Complements Tension
The reader (Robert Powell) is perfect. The tension builds and the plot is interesting. Very entertaining, I thought. In the last quarter, the plot wobbles but it works overall.
    Another Good Forsyth book
Not his best but well written and altough it was not completly beleivable for me it was still a good listen and I recommend it.
A great peek into terror networks
This is a tremendous sagea of the very optimistic view of the west's views, understanding & response to one of the multiple, far fetches terrorist plots against the west designed to surpass 9-11....

    Disappointing Abridgement
I thought: "Well, even an abriged WEB is better than none." After listening, I'm not so sure. There are gaping holes in the plot, and I'd like to have found out how the final chapter of the adventure came out.
Also, there were some surprising research errors (like having a character carrying a .357 revolver--I believe this pistol was a creature of the '50s and not a WW II weapon).
The loud music overlaid upon the narration at the beginning of many chapters drove me nuts. I had to turn my car stereo up to "boom box" levels to hear the narration over the music and road noise.
    Still . . . It was a W E B Griffin (& Son) novel, and that can't be all bad.
I'm not sure it was worth the wait
If you have been a fan of the Men at War series since back in the day, you may be a little disappointed in this offering.
I guess it would depend on exactly what you are expecting. For some strange reason, I expected the story to pick up where we left off with Canidy and Fulmar escaping from Hungary, Jimmy in the Philippines, and Bitter and Douglass, Jr. working on the Aphrodite project. I guess it did but it was just a little off. Jimmy and Douglass, Jr. were mentioned in passing but Bitter didnt exist at all. What about the new young pilot character, Darmstardt, that he spent so much time developing in the last book? He also fell off of the face of the earth. I was also not happy with the personality transplant that some of the characters seemed to undergo during the interim.
Now for the story. It was a good story and very plausible. There were a couple of glaring editing mistakes where characters have information that they were never given. There was also time spent introducing a character that never appeared. It makes you wonder if he was edited out and they forgot to go back and clean up the foreshadowing. I also didnt like the whole Anne Chambers side story. That was not well written.
All in all if you are a longtime fan you may be disappointed. Hopefully this new team will get better with the next installment.
There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!
What a disappointment! I have enjoyed every W.E.B. Griffin book that I have read or listened to. I anticipated this one greatly. Once I started trying to listen to this recording, though, I was really put off by the lousy production. The writing was probably excellent, and the narration was good--when the producer let you hear it. The wretched, loud, and unnecessary music at the beginning of chapters was awful.

    Publisher's Summary:
Now, on the orders of Omar Khadri, the malicious mastermind plotting more al Qaeda strikes on America, Wells is coming home. Neither Khadri nor Jennifer Exley, Wells' superior at Langley, knows quite what to expect.
For Wells has changed during his years in the mountains. He has become a Muslim. He finds the United States decadent and shallow. Yet he hates al Qaeda and the way it uses Islam to justify its murderous assaults on innocents. He is a man alone, and the CIA, still reeling from its failure to predict 9/11 or find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, does not know whether to trust him. Among his handlers at Langley, only Exley believes in him, and even she sometimes wonders. And so the agency freezes Wells out, preferring to rely on high-tech means for gathering intelligence.
But as that strategy fails and Khadri moves closer to unleashing the most devastating terrorist attack in history, Wells and Exley must somehow find a way to stop him, with or without the government's consent.
From secret American military bases where suspects are held and "interrogated" to basement laboratories where al Qaeda's scientists grow the deadliest of biological weapons, The Faithful Spy is a riveting and cautionary tale, as affecting in its personal stories as it is sophisticated in its political details. The first spy thriller to grapple squarely with the complexities and terrors of today's world, this is a uniquely exciting and unnerving novel by an author who truly knows his territory.

    The title tells it all.
A far-fetched tale of a spy who came in from the heat and saved New York from disaster while holding off the CIA and Arab/Pakistani/Jihadi terrorists and their diabolical plans. Moments of suspense. Unrealistic (exaggerated) characters. Dialogue uninspired. Probably OK for a long ride across country, but not the best of audibles out there. (Try Grisham or Connelly).
    Excellent Listen
I found this audio book hard to put away and I thought the narrator's voice was the perfect match for this type of book. This book has a "Sum of All Fears" feel to it and will definitely make you think about homeland security.
    Wow
Great story that moved quickly. Finally a replacement for Alex Cross. Can't wait to read the next book.
    A real page turner!
This is a well written book about a timely topic. I enjoyed the narration very much too. I enjoyed it and believe you will too.
    Over Abridged
A good written book has been spoiled by having too much of it taken away in this audiobook.

    A Pleasant Surprise
I've been told repeatedly by fellow 007 fans that I needed to read this series. I'm not really sure why I'd not done this before, but I'm glad I finally picked this one up. I am truly impressed with it! The best way to relate it to the Bond we know is to compare it to the TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It's the same kind of thing, where you can see the elements that would turn the kid into the man we know.
And in this case, the man we know is definitely Fleming's Bond. The setting is in the early 30s when Germany is only beginning its rise to power, and young Bond is still in school, learning to drive a car, and facing off against the local bullies. In this case, the local bully's father happens to be into eugenics. What are the odds?
There are plenty of nods to both Fleming and to Connery to make this enjoyable without going overboard with it. And as a bonus, the narration provided by Nathaniel Parker is a first class performance at all turns. Even when the story isn't so credible, Parker makes you believe it.
All in all, a solid beginning. I'm looking forward to more!
    looking forward to the sequel
My 12yo (and rabid Bond fan) son and I listened to this on a recent roadtrip. I have to say it was a hit with both of us... a good introduction for young Bond fans who may not be ready for the "Full-Flemming". We look forward to grabbing the sequel from Audible when it is available!
FYI - Another good 'starting Bond' is Thunderball - similar to the movie, straight forward, minimal graphic content.
    Loved this book.
This is an excellent, thrilling story. And... what an incredible narrator. if you like Alex Rider, you will enjoy this!
James Bond, the Hogwarts years j/k
So this takes place WAY before Bond was Bond. This is a school boy on an adventure who just happens to be James Bond. It's interesting though because as slow as it starts (why I didn't give it 5 stars) it really does develop into something nice.
I think the lessons, experiences, and mentoring moments in this story translates well into the foundation for James Bond. It's pretty fun, if a bit slow at the start. It wraps nicely and I'm interested to follow this to the next in the series.
    Awesome
    Awesome story!
Listening to Nathaniel Parker made the story sound British.
Always love a good Bond adventure.
