    Title: Rainbow Six
    Author: Tom Clancy
    Narrator: David Dukes
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 56 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-03-02
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 498 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
At its heart is John Clark, a master of secret operational missions, and newly named the head of an international task force dedicated to combating terrorism. Clark tries to figure out where a recent string of terrorist attacks is heading, but there is no way to predict the real threat: a group of terrorists like none the world has ever encountered, a group so extreme that their success could literally mean the end of life on this earth as we know it.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Clancy] writes action scenes beautifully. John Clark is a gratifyingly distinctive, three-dimensional hero." (Entertainment Weekly)
"The charged clouds of good and evil build toward a typically foreshadowed and explosive Clancy finish." (Kirkus Reviews)

GREAT BOOK! (the narrator isn't that bad)
I was real nervous about purchasing this book due to the issues everyone seems to have with the narrator. I took a chance, and let me tell you...GREAT BOOK!!!!! The narrator is not as nearly as bad as everyone is making him out to be. He is not the best, but I followed him without a problem and he DEFINITELY did not ruin the story! (It's only a book people! Being just a little to picky!) The story was compelling, the plot got better and better with every moment and the there was never a dull point. If you like military or spy novels, this is the book for you!
    Narrarator was horrible.
This review has nothing to do with the quality of the book itself. I could not finish listening to it because the reader read in sporatic bursts. It was if he was reading the book for the first time and was unsure what tone to use or at what pace to read the passages.
One of the worst abridgments that I've heard
I guess I will have to buy the book. This has got to be one of the worst abridgements that I've ever heard. The plot is all over the place and the reader, is awful. I wasn't sure that it could get worse then having Dennis Boutsikaris as a reader. David Dukes reads a lot like William Shatner and his characters, especially the women as noted in other reviews, are horrible. Every women character has an annoyingly deep and "breathy" voice. Had these characters been drag queens, this would have been fine. As for the story, it has a lot of potential. Lots of Special Ops stuff. Action from the get-go but I felt like I was missing half of the story. This seems to be one of those books which should never had been abridged.
Short But Good, My Favorite Tom Clancy Story
To me Tom Clancy in general tends to be a bit "dry". Lots of techno-babble, and light on story, and many of his stories crawl along. Rainbow Six is different. It starts right out of the gate exciting, and doesn't let up. As a result, the book is actually pretty short, I actually wish it were longer, but it's a lot of fun. Tons of action.
Typical special ops - a warning.
Ok, first off, I love everything fictional Tom Clancy has written. This book is no different. But a warning, if you arn't into special ops, their weapons, or their school of thought, not your book. If you like the Jack Ryan series and want to try something with a bit more action, this is your book. The story is told well, the acting is above par. Overall, about par for Tom Clancy.

    Critic Reviews:
"This superbly crafted thriller puts Silva at the forefront of his generation of foreign intrigue specialists." (Publishers Weekly)
...[it] moves at a brisk clip, with clean, lucid exposition and characters who are thoughtfully drawn. (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Campbell Scott brings
Just as the ability and range of the actor can bring a play to life, so is the vocal range and intonations of the narrator of an audible book. "The English Assissin" is very intriguing. I could have read it and been completely captivated by it. But, Campbell Scott's narration had me mezmerized. No other way to describe it. The combination of the book and narration was excellent!
    do the unabridged
Fun to listen to but the unabridged would have added more detail to make the story more enjoyable. Overall fun.
enjoyed - lots of twists and turns
This was a really good book that held my interest. The climax was full of twists and turns.
Altogether an enjoyable & spellbinding read
    Fun to listen to.
Silva's spy novels are a lot of fun to listen to and this was no exception. Its like watching a good action movie. I am not sure why this was called English Assassin. This book had more to do with Swiss secrecy of looted art.
    Surprisingly entertaining
This was my first Silva thriller, and it was a pleasant surprise. I am a great fan of espionage/political suspense, and it is difficult to find new (to me) authors that are both entertaining and interesting. Silva had just enough twists and turns, along with careful plotting to keep one guessing, as well as providing enough stereotypical characters to keep it familiar and comfortable. Highly recommended.

Refusing to be contained to Irish turf, their next planned assault promises to stun the world. Marcinko and his merry band are determined to stop them, but there are a few unknowns: they don't know the target, they don't know the date, and they don't know where the terror is going down.

    It's a Marcinko book alright!
The first Rogue Warrior book I ever heard / read was Red Cell - this was back when that book first came out (mid-90's) and it blew me away - the story, the action, the detail, the overall content. This book I didn't feel was quite as good, but still entertaining none the less.
If you like "special forces" or "navy seal" type stories, especially where the good guy looks to be stuck in a hard-spot and must take down the bad guy, give this one a whirl!
Audible - Please get the rest of Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior books, especially the first one, his auto-biography...these would be the top of my shopping list and definitely worth the effort to have available! :o)
    Great Story
I have read all of the 'Rogue Warrior's' books and have always imagined what his voice sounded like. I wasn't disappointed. Very compelling and fast paced story-line. I hope that the rest of his other books will be put on this site.
    I want the 10 commandments
please get dick's other books! The rogue warriors success books are great! I would also like to be able to buy his auto biagraphy.
2 Thumbs Up for being Very Rouge-ish
I enjoyed this book thouroghly....Richard Marcinko takes you into the very mind of a Navy SEAL and tells it like it ought to be told. The life of a rogue and the job of protecting the free world from terrorism is dirty work but somebody has to do it. Thank the God of War that we had someone like Dirty-Dick and his rough-house rogues to get rid of the deserving "tangos" (For all you non-milpers types...that translates to targets!!) On a more personal note....a heartfelt thanks goes out to these members of SEAL Team 6. Hoooyahhh
    trigger time!
Dick writes a good book! Great escapism
colourful language - A book about rough people who do harm to others, so we can sleep soundly in our beds at night!

    Wanted more
This book was the first in a series that I will definitely go back and listen to. It would be good if these books were in 'Unabridged' format because the depth of the characters would be better.
Great book for a short read.
    Bogus Abridgment
This supposed abridgment stops right in the middle of the book, without finishing what the story line is of the actual book I read prior to purchasing the audiobook. This isn't an abridgment, it is merely a truncation of the book.
Don't purchase this, it is a waste of a credit or your money, whichever you use...
At first I thought it was a damaged audiobook, so I downloaded another copy, which was identical to the first download.
    There are better from Flynn
I now have listed to all but one of Flynn's novels on audible. Avoid this book and choose from among other great Flynn novels. The best are read by George Guidall. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Vince Flynn--just not this one. There is very little action, particularly from the counter terrorism hero we all love--Mitch Rapp.
    Abridged sucks
Great story, love the spy hero types but I hate that it is only offered abridged. You miss so much.
4.5 Fast pace with interesting twists
My 12 year old son, who is an intelligent and avid reader, turned me on to Vincent Flynn. The story moved along well and kept me captivated throughout. The narrator could have paused between chapters slightly. I needed to rewind for points that were missed when the story changed abruptly. I recommended this for spy novel fans and plan to download other Vincent Flynn books available.

    Release date: 12-15-99
    Publisher: Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
It is summer 1999 in Russia, a country on the threshold of anarchy. An interim president sits powerless in Moscow as his nation is wracked by famine and inflation, crime and corruption, and seething hordes of the unemployed roam the streets. For Igor Komarov, one-time army sergeant who has risen to leadership of the right-wing UPF party, the chaos is made to order. As he waits in the wings for the presidential election of January 2000, his striking voice rings out over the airwaves, offering the roiling masses hope at last - not only for law, order, and prosperity but for restoring the lost greatness of their land.
Who is this man offering the promise of a Russia reborn? A document stolen from party headquarters and smuggled to the West sends nightmare chills through those who remember the past, for this Black Manifesto is pure Mein Kampf in a country with frightening parallels to the Germany of the Weimar Republic.
Officially the West can do nothing. But in secret a group of elder statesmen sends the only person who can expose the truth about Komarov into the heart of the inferno. Jason Monk, ex-CIA and "the best damn agent-runner we ever had," had sworn he would never return to Moscow, but one name changes his mind. Colonel Anatoli Grishin, the KGB officer who tortured and murdered four of Monk's agents after they had been betrayed by Aldrich Ames, is now Komarov's head of security.
Monk has a dual mission: to stop Komarov whatever it takes and to prepare the way for an icon worthy of the Russian people. But he has a personal mission as well: to settle the final score with Grishin. But to do this he must stay alive.

    Great Book
I read this book a few years ago. There are some things I miss in the abridged version, but the story is still amazing. Moreover, the narration is really, really good. If you like spy / mystery novels, you'll love this book.
    I just can't stop hearing
Catching story. Forsyth at it's best. This book honors the day of the jackal. Excellent
    Wonderful
Wonderful, as usual another great story with interesting characters and suspense.
Forsyth at his very very best.....
I have to say that this maybe my favorite audio book ever. I have listened to it many many times and each time I find something new. Forsyth's ability to construct a plot around real events is just amazing. If you buy you'll be entertained and you'll learn lots as well.
    I didn't like this
I didn't like this and I didn't listen to more than the first few pages. It was a big disappointment because I enjoy Frederick Forsyth's books, his style of writing etc, and I had enjoyed listening to 'The Afghan'.
As Forsyth is such an English writer, I was surprised and disappointed that the reader is American. I hadn't realised that. I find it very difficult to listen to American readers - I've found that with other audiobooks.

    Great Story-Wrong Narrator
I have long been a fan of Mrs. Pollifax, having listened to the library audio book by Barb Rosenblat. This narration is done by several different people and makes the flow difficult. Why doesn't Audible carry the series narrated by Rosenblat?
    FINALLY
I have been wondering why Audible didn't carry this series! I love reading all of the Pollifax books and now I can finally listen to them. You won't regret this listen if you are looking for a light adventure. I far prefer Barbara Rosenblat as the reader but this is OK. I take away one star for format/reader. A fun book!
    Gotta love her
When I'm in the mood for light fiction, I often turn to Mrs. Pollifax. No romance to speak of, and certainly no sex; just a good story and some human interaction and nothing to get upset about. Actually, I should say I turn to the author, as she has other books besides this series and I have probably read them all.
The Story is Great, the Narration is lacking
I am a huge fan of Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Polilifax series, and highly encourage you to read all of them. The narrator for this one reads too quickly and it is frequently difficult to differentiate between the female voices. Barbara Rosenblat does the best job with this series in my opinion.
    Barbara Rosenblat Where Are You!!!!
I was so looking forward to this book - and then the narrators began - they all were so hurried in their reading it seemed like they couldn't wait to finish.
Ms. Rosenblat reads at just the right pace for Mrs. Pollifax, and gives the right tone and inflection to all the other characters in the story.
I just listened to a few minutes of this book and then turned to another Gilman novel, which is being read wonderfully by Ms. Rosenblat.

Robin that is really some to new levels of low.
NV prologue almost tells the next story which couldn't be worse than this one and had to be better I'm actually listen to it and yes Reagan did get better the narrator Kramer he's incredible. is internations and inflections that you know who is speaking. If Robin realize this he wouldn't have gone on with the he said she said they did they didn't and so on
    Well Done!
This one had me riveted to the edge of my seat and burning midnight oil to get to the conclusion.
Preformance is so bad, can't get into story
What disappointed you about Divide and Conquer?
The monotone voice of the performance was so dull and bad, couldn't follow the story
What was most disappointing about the authorss story?
Could never tell, couldn't follow the plot due to performance, LOU DIAMOND PHILLIPS where are you when reads such as this are still around
What didnt you like about Michael Kramers performance?
    Absolutely nothing
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Couldn't stand listening long enough to make a good judgement call
    Treason at the highest level!
What made the experience of listening to Divide and Conquer the most enjoyable?
Being able to follow the audio with the print version of the book just makes the reading experience more enjoyable.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The twists and turns the book takes and discovering who all the plotters in the whitehouse were was edge of the seat stuff.
Which character as performed by Michael Kramer was your favorite?
Paul Hood is my favourite character as he unravels the plot and doesn't let anyone stand in the way of letting the president know the truth of what is going on with his closest advisors.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened in one sitting on my kindle fire. I always speed the audiobook up to get through it faster.

    Main character was creepy.
This is the first bad review I have ever left!
When the main character wasn't bathing the little girl, he was lying to her and/or manipulating her into endangering her life to save his own. Perhaps the unabridged version doesn't make him seem like such a bumbling creeper.
The ending was extremely abrupt, as if even the author was disgusted with the direction in which he had taken the character.
    The narration was great :-)
    Not as expected.
ends abruptly. Everything seemed like it happened accidentally instead of at least some bit of a plan as you would expect from SAS

    DeLeo Doesn't Disappoint
True to form, DeLeo tells some well integrated stories about the adventures of his hard-assed, no-mercy, covert team. And there's a little cage fighting again in this book - much appreciated!
The first couple of chapters are page turners, followed by a slow one where you can catch your breath. There's plenty of action to follow.
Most of the team's missions feature a sexy, sadistic, and deadly female knife fighter. She joins the team as their master interrogator (torturer), with no holds barred.
The missions are compelling and hard-hitting, including breaking up a ring of preadolescent-girl slave traders, conning a cartel, thwarting a school bombing, and dismantling a vicious crime syndicate (none done exactly gently!). Yet they also include an endearing but funny story about setting a deserving guy straight. And the most exciting mission of all is saved for last and ties in nicely with one of the early ones.
In the second half of the book anticipation of an illegal cage fight builds. When it happens, David (John) goes up against a Goliath (Demetrius) sponsored by a Mideast gang. DeLeo's at his best in describing these fights, and I'm not even going to hint about whether history repeats itself in the David and Goliath encounter. Nor will I divulge an aftermath involving a prior opponent, The Big O.
While the book is very well composed, DeLeo and Parker should definitely thin out their highly repetitious descriptions of guffaws after people get ragged - they are particularly dense in the first part of the book and become tedious. And it wouldn't hurt to add a list of characters with one-line descriptions. (Psst - and the objective case of I is me.)
One thing I particularly enjoy about DeLeo's writing is that he doesn't abruptly jerk you back and forth at the high points of different subplots as so many authors do. Rather, he integrates them seamlessly so that you're never cut off in the middle of some action to be sporadically popped back into it after visiting other subplots. And I like happy endings.
All in all, the book is an excellent addition to this series. And, by the way, it's a stand-alone read should you have had the misfortune to miss the earlier ones - you can go back to them later.
The good guys are flawed but love their country
The Hard Case books have been enjoyable for me. The good guys are flawed but love their country. The bad guys are really, really bad and get what they deserve. I have read some reviews of this series that compare it in type to Dexter. I agree up to a point.
