    Author: David Downing
    Narrator: Simon Vance
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 55 mins

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Paris, November 1945: John Russell is walking home along the banks of the Seine on a cold and misty evening when Soviet agent Yevgeny Shchepkin falls into step alongside him. Shchepkin tells Russell that the American intelligence will soon be asking him to undertake some low-grade espionage on their behalf - assessing the strains between different sections of the German Communist Party - and that Shchepkin's own bosses in Moscow want him to accept the task and pass his findings on to them. He adds that refusal will put Russell's livelihood and life at risk, but that once he has accepted it, he'll find himself even further entangled in the Soviet net. It's a lose-lose situation.
Shchepkin admits that his own survival now depends on his ability to utilize Russell. The only way out for the two of them is to make a deal with the Americans. If they can come up with something the Americans want or need badly enough, then perhaps Russell will be forgiven for handing German atomic secrets over to Moscow, and Shchepkin might be offered the sort of sanctuary that also safeguards the lives of his wife and daughter in Moscow. Every decision Russell makes now is a dangerous one.

Great view of Berlin after the end of WW2
Is there anything you would change about this book?
As this is Part 5 of a series, a few more gentle reminders of who some of the characters were and their 'backstory' could have been woven in to make the current story more understandable and relevant.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I never quite grasped who the lead character was, what motivated him. I enjoyed the series, but the lead character doesn't seem as clearly drawn as those by other authors exploring some of the same territory, such as Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon or Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther.
What about Simon Vances performance did you like?
I adore Simon Vance's narration and much prefer these fine British actors telling WW2 or spy stories in general. They own them, in my opinion. I see Simon Vance also has a blog speaking about a variety of topics, including history. His blog contains an ad for a contest to compare James Bond movies to the audio narration of the same book. For those of us old enough to have had some of our earliest stories delivered to us without the benefit of pictures, the power of the spoken word has re-emerged as delightful way to enjoy a book, beyond the obvious conveniences of an audiobook, especially when the narration is as good as this one.
Was Lehrter Station worth the listening time?
Yes, it was. It can be grim at times, but for a story taking place 6 months after the end of WW2, exploring the effects of war on a range of characters, that is to be expected.
    Any additional comments?
This book illustrates the social and political realities in the months following the war through the stories of individuals and does a great job accomplishing that goal. I'm somewhat of a WW2 buff and feel after this book, I now have a much greater grasp of Europe, especially Berlin, in the months after the war ended. One sees the different powers jockeying for their place in post-war Berlin and making tough choices that are easy to question all these years later.

    Lumbering Ludlum
It is a good thing Robert Ludlum writes a good adventure because this book is long and full of great detail. To tell the truth I selected it over several I was considering because of Scott Brick who I think is fantastic. If you are feeling that you want to get lost in an endless story this is a great choice.
the narrator isn't right for the story
the lilting rhythm of the narrator was completely at odds with the intrinsic tension of the "spy thriller" making it almost unbearable to finish.
    A twisted spy novel
What did you love best about The Parsifal Mosaic?
The best thing I liked about this book is the way that they kept you guessing who was the top enemy spy until near the end of the book.
What did you like best about this story?
Scott Brick does a good job of portraying the characters and keeping them real.
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene is when the enemy spy master sends people to kill the doctor and his body guards only to find out that it's a trap so he sends another of his teams to take out the first team he sent so they can't get caught in the trap, really cold.
    Riveting Story
Strong story with fairly straight line to end. Gets tedious at times due to "over-telling" (too many details).
    Overall very good and suspenseful.
    Once again, goes beyond awesome!
It's been awhile since I last read a Ludlum book. I forgot how great of an author he truly was. Exciting storyline that inserts the reader into a worldwide journey.

Buy the Book Not the Audio
The story was good and I wish I had read the book. The narrator was in such a hurry and he didn't vary the voices or the narrated portions at all. I can't remember the last audio book that was this poorly narrated. I'm spoiled by all the other great narrators and I'll remember to avoid ones Rob Patterson does unless he improves. The story was pretty good, however.
Very good story ruined by an awful reader
I've been an Audible member for over ten years (607 downloads) and I'm hard pressed to think of a worse read than this one. Every conversation sounded the same, whether deciding what to eat for dinner or staring down an incoming missile. Men, women, Americans, Chinese, all sounded the same. This was particularly frustrating when men and women were talking because you had to listen especially hard to figure out who was who.
I don't know who Rob Patterson is and what he's done before, but it's as if they pulled some random guy off the street and said, "here, read this novel." "Never done it before?" "No problem."
The biggest shame is that the story is actually quite good. Put in the hands of even a competent reader, and it would have been fabulous. As it was, I put this down three or four times and had to push myself to finish it.
    Interesting and entertaining story
The book was quite good. Interesting subject, the story seemed well researched and therefore very plausible.
But, this is one of the few times I have been very disappointed with the reader of an Audible book. It was read in a monotone, almost computer like way, lacking any kind of understanding of what was being read. Especially dialogues were very difficult to follow. My apologies to the reader, but it just was very distracting.
    Well done espionage thriller
Red Cell marks the evolution of the spy novel from Soviet / cold war era through terrorism to now China as the major threat. "Red" teams are typically structured as sparing partners for war gaming. Here, the "red cell" consists of a CIA intellectual renegade and a rookie covert operative on the losing end of poorly planned (but not executed) mission.

As Soldier Spies opens, it is November 1942. War is raging in Europe. The invasion of North Africa has begun. In Washington, OSS chief William J. Donovan finds himself fighting a rear-guard battle against an unexpected enemy: the rival intelligence chiefs back home. In Morocco, Second Lieutenant Eric Fulmar waits in the desert for a car containing two top-level defectors - or will it be full of SS men instead? In England, Major Richard Canidy gets the mission of his life: to penetrate into the heart of Germany and bring out the man with the secret of the jet engine, before the Germans grab hold of him first. The only hope? An experimental pilotless flying bomb. Or at least that's what a lieutenant named Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., thinks.
Everywhere adventure crackles, fueled by the narrative realism, rich characters, and that special flair for the military heart and mind that have always made Griffin's novels so popular. The Soldier Spies is further proof that "Griffin rates among the best storytellers in any genre." (Phoenix Gazette)

Alex saves the world again with a lot of class
I think this is Ted Bell's best book yet. Alex has become more arrogant and a bit pompus, even for an elite Brit character. He has absolutely no qualms about killing or being the bad guy, but is a pussycat with now having a family! It is a very interesting mix. I loved every minute and the narration was again superb. John Shea is the perfect narrator for this series. I'd like to listen to more of his books. Don't pass this one up if you like thrillers!!
    It is excellent :-)
    AI Gone Amok
I found the plot of this book extraordinarily unbelievable. Yes, I realize it is fiction. But, I really don't think artificial intelligence is anywhere near the capabilities described. The story, based on the improbably AI gone amok premise is very hard to get in to. I listened to the entire novel but frankly, couldn't wait for it to end. The narration is terrible and sleep inducing. Don't recommend this one.
    Wow! Scary times!
So glad Hawke is at the helm of this science fiction adventure! Man vs machine! Crazy times that are coming into realty soon - great read!
Another excellent well written and verbose novel
Intrigue and suspense a very well thought out story, A great midwinter action novel

    A lot like Tom Clancy
What did you like best about Dreamland? What did you like least?
If you like Tom Clancy you'll love it. Every weapon is cataloged, no alpha designation get unused.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Leave out all the excruciating details of weapons' detailed names and just use the real names of things instead of an alphabet soup of mnemonics. The ABC dropped the Xyz123x12 cartridges into his XXX-23 and fired. What? Seriously does the author think I can or want to remember every alphanumeric he drops?
    Which scene was your favorite?
When people were actually talking to one another with something to say.
    Any additional comments?
While I normally read Dale Brown easily, this one was difficult. IT was so full of acronyms and technical detailed weaponry descriptions that I wanted to scream. Also his characters were all very macho, even the women. It seemed that the characters were being rushed in and about with no sense of reality or real character. They were all in exactly the right place and time, highly unlikely plotting, all tough guys (and gals) and the enemy were fools. In an attempt to make it seem topical, America is at odds with Iranian Muslims in cahoots with Somali pirates and the heroes (all of them) come to save the day.It channels Tom Clancy with "See Jane Run" characterizations.
Love Dale Brown, I can't believe he wrote this.
I'm stunned Dale Brown put his name on this I was so disappointed. It may be the reader but I barely got it finished. It's not good.
    Book name well chosen
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This is one of most boring books I have ever listened to. It was named well- Dreamland will surely put you to sleep - not good if you listen to books in your car like me. The story was so slow moving and the characters uninteresting I gave up about 1/3 of the way through. I don't think it was the narrators fault it was the material he had to read.

Histrionic performance ruined this book for me!
I've read The Bourne Identity many times. It's a great thriller - full of excitement, well-paced and well-constructed. It's a little old-fashioned nowadays, I guess, but I was really excited when I saw it was available from Audible and bought it straightaway.
What a disappointment!!! The reader, Scott Brick, who is billed as an outstanding performer, gave an over-the-top histrionic performance which completely ruined this talking book for me!
"And he LOOKED over the BOAT'S RAILING and he SAW ...". Enough of that - you get the picture. Every noun and every verb was declaimed in a tone of almost complete hysteria.
I was driving the car down a country lane while I listened to the start of the book and I had to pull off the road after about 20 minutes and stop the performance. I just couldn't stand any more!
I'll never listen to The Bourne Identity now, sadly -- what a total waste of an excellent book. And why on earth did the reader feel the need to do this?? I'll be watching out for books read by Scott Brick in future -- to make sure I avoid them ...
Such a pity - but mostly excellent
    Huh? What did he say?
Unfortunately Mr Scott Bri has the tendency to use a soft voice with some parts so if you are listening in a noisy environment, like in a moving vehicle, you tend to lose the las par of some wo. (And possibly some sentences too?)
The book is exceptional. The story much better than the story in the movie but I see it as a bonus (similar stories in the same vein).
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and look forward to the next in the series (Supremacy) BUT I am going to opt for the abridged version narrated by Jeff Harding, even though it is 20 hours shorter. From the sample it sounds acceptable.
The performance of the narrator is mostly top notch but I hate it when people do not finish their words or sentences. If a word is worth saying then say it, dont sa i.
Scott Brick improvised by far too much!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. The book is great; a page turner. But this audio book is a bit annoying. Why? See below.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Yep.
What three words best describe Scott Bricks performance?
    Improvisation, Dissident, Character.
    Any additional comments?
Scott's performance isn't bad, but it's more an interpretation than reading the book. Certain passages got completely altered by Scott, which makes it hard to follow when listening to the audio book and reading the book at the same time. His characterization is believable, though. The story comes to live.

THREE DECADES. TWO MURDERS. ONE CONSPIRACY
    WHO IS AGENT 6?
Tom Rob Smith's debut, Child 44, was an immediate publishing sensation and marked the arrival of a major new talent in contemporary fiction. Named one of top 100 thrillers of all time by NPR, it hit bestseller lists around the world, won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and the ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In this spellbinding new novel, Tom Rob Smith probes the tenuous border between love and obsession as Leo Demidov struggles to untangle the threads of a devastating conspiracy that shatters everything he holds dear. Deftly capturing the claustrophobic intensity of the Cold War-era Soviet Union, it's at once a heart-pounding thriller and a richly atmospheric novel of extraordinary depth....
Leo Demidov is no longer a member of Moscow's secret police. But when his wife, Raisa, and daughters Zoya and Elena are invited on a "Peace Tour" to New York City, he is immediately suspicious.
Forbidden to travel with his family and trapped on the other side of the world, Leo watches helplessly as events in New York unfold and those closest to his heart are pulled into a web of political conspiracy and betrayal-one that will end in tragedy.
In the horrible aftermath, Leo demands only one thing: to investigate the killer who destroyed his family. His request is summarily denied. Crippled by grief and haunted by the need to find out exactly what happened on that night in New York, Leo takes matters into his own hands. It is a quest that will span decades, and take Leo around the world - from Moscow, to the mountains of Soviet-controlled Afghanistan, to the backstreets of New York - in pursuit of the one man who knows the truth: Agent 6.
    Members Reviews:
Well Executed, (but didn't stick the landing)
Points off for a lack of plot twists, turns and surprises (there's only a slight veil of a mystery surrounding "whodunnit" in this one). But this slight lapse is more than made up for by the author's strong, deep and fully fleshed-out character development as well as the arc of the main character's journey of discovery. The book spans decades, so we get to see Leo as a young, sharp secret police agent, as well as a "consultant" in Afghanistan who has hit rock bottom. This book is a good read, artfully done. I enjoyed it as much as the first Leo Demidov thriller, Child 44, and even more than the second one, The Secret Speech, which was, still, very well done. Dennis Boutsikaris does a great job in all three.
    A Real Russian Thriller
What a thrilling ride with unexpected twists and new characters all along--well developed. Couldn't wait to finish this book. Highly recommend the first two books in this "series". Well written and researched. A good look into the KGB, their ruthlessness and the change possible in some. Near the end, however, the author has a character watching the sun go down from "Brighton Beach."-- did the author forget that the Atlantic is facing east from this area? Perhaps I misunderstood. Highly recommend this book.
    Heart Wrenching!!!!!!!!!
Oh such a sad end to a great series. This book takes you so many places and follows such a wonderful story line. As a HUGE fan of Child 44 and The Secret Speech this book really took you to another world and covered the most ground.

The time is early 1943: In the Philippines, a ragtag American guerrilla army battles the Japanese, under a most unusual commander. In Budapest, an agent must keep two key prisoners from being interrogated by the Gestapo, his only choices being to rescue them - or kill them. In Washington, an Army Air Corps captain suddenly finds himself assigned deep under the sea, his mission an improbable one of submarines, supplies, arms, and gold. And in Cairo, an undistinguished pilot named Darmstadter wonders why in the world the OSS is interested in his services, only to find out in the most dramatic way possible -and become a hero in the process.
Everywhere adventure crackles, fueled by the narrative realism, rich characters, and special flair for the military heart and mind that have always made Griffin's novels unique. The Fighting Agents is further proof that "Griffin rates among the best storytellers in any genre." (Phoenix Gazette)

    Spies
Over the years I have read most of W.E.B. Griffins books. Now they are coming out in audio form I have gone back and checked my records for the ones I had missed reading. This book is one of them. Unlike some of the other series this one is about spies primarily the OSS. It is best to read the series in order; this is the fourth in the series. This book has two main plots going on, one with James Whittaker who is being sent to the Philippines to meet with General Wendell Fertig. He is a Lt Colonel that promoted himself to General to unite all the wandering U.S. and Philippino Army members that had fled into the jungle from the Japanese. He managed to gather 30,000 + men to fight as a guerrilla army against the Japanese. General MacArthur refused to recognize him so Donovans OSS went in to help supply him.
The other plot was with Canidy and his group bringing nuclear scientist out of Germany. In this particular case they were coming out via Hungry but Eric Fulmar and his scientist were caught for being Black marketers and sentenced to 90 days hard work in a coal mine. Canidy set up a rescue before the SS discovered who they were. The book has lots of action, suspense, some humor. Scott Brick was great narrating the book. If you are into military historical fiction you will enjoy this book. I was particularly interested in the authors comments at the end of the book. Will not tell you, you must read the book to find out.
    Great
The series just keeps getting better and better. character development is very interesting and in depth.
    Typical Griffin, always entertaining
Scott brick is the best in the business. Thank you Scott for hours of entertainment! Keep up the good work
    Good book, terrible performance!
If you could sum up The Fighting Agents in three words, what would they be?
    great book, fun series
Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Bricks performances?
NO!!!!!! He is the worst narrator on Audible! Restrict Scott to American stories only, he does not handle non-english words, makes for a very tough listen!
    addicted to W.E.B Griffin' books
I love all of his books. he is one of the best authors in my opinion
