    Members Reviews:
A perfect book, but a bit advanced for most
What did you love best about What Is a Law of Logic??
He says what a law of logic is; he really nails it, exposing all of ambiguities and nuances to which my midwit college profs were (I now see) quite blind. The difference between Kuczynski and the average college prof is the difference between a professional tennis player and a bad country club instructor.
What other book might you compare What Is a Law of Logic? to and why?
something by plato, probably, maybe the Parmenides, because of the combination of rigor and honesty.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    It was one scene.
If you could give What Is a Law of Logic? a new subtitle, what would it be?
    Case Closed
    Any additional comments?
I liked the narrator. Good sound quality. It's good that the author outsourced production on this one.
    a hard book
If you could sum up What Is a Law of Logic? in three words, what would they be?
    very, very smart
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
the way that cogent answers to foundational questions were developed through an organic dialogue
What about Samuel Ungers performance did you like?
the clarity, the steady and slow pace
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
it made me think, made me see things
    Any additional comments?
it's a little bit high level for most people

    Titre: Le prince
    Auteur: Nicolas Machiavel
    Narrateur: Michel Galabru
    Format: Unabridged
Durée: 2 hrs and 27 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 07-21-16
    Éditeur: Éditions Thélème
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy

    Great Description of Power Management
I am very surprised to see little has changed in 500 years in the way governors should behave in order to attain and maintain power. I am also amazed to see how the tactics and recommendations made by Machiavelli in The Prince are nowadays applied and followed in corporations, companies and organizations
    I like it.

  • Isn't This Fun Audiobook by Michael Foley

    Title: Isn't This Fun
Subtitle: Investigating the Serious Business of Enjoying Ourselves
    Author: Michael Foley
    Narrator: John O'Mahony
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Michael Foley wants to understand why he doesn't appear to be experiencing as much fun as everyone else. So, with characteristic wit and humour, he sets out to understand what fun really means, examining its heritage, its cultural significance and the various activities we associate with fun.
He investigates pursuits such as dancing, sex, holidays, sport, gaming and comedy and concludes that fun is not easy, simple and fixed, as many seem to believe, but elusive, complex and constantly changing. In fact fun is a profoundly serious business - a range of new group rituals evolving in response to cultural developments, often motivated as much by spirituality as hedonism. Also, while fun is a modern phenomenon, it turns out to have re-created many of the elements of early ritual.
His findings will invigorate you with insights, make you laugh at life and quite possibly help you to understand why the post-postmodern is actually the pre-premodern.
Michael Foley was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, but has lived most of his adult life in London, working for 23 years as a lecturer in information technology at the University of Westminster before retiring in 2007 to concentrate on full-time writing. He has published critically acclaimed poetry, novels and nonfiction, including New and Selected Poems (Blackstaff Press, 2011). His first nonfiction book, The Age of Absurdity (Simon & Schuster, 2010), was a best seller and has been translated into seven languages.
    Members Reviews:
    Rich, funny, interesting.
It's not often an author is so thought provoking, effortlessly eloquent and funny at the same time. A future classic and one that I will revisit as there are so many great quotes that resonate. "Examine anything and you illuminate everything ". Loved it.
Not quite ''The Age of Absurdity''
What did you like best about this story?
Foley's skill to approach very ordinary experiences and values from a very different angle, leading the reader to re-think some basic issues of modern Western life.
What does John O'Mahony bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Well read. The reader's voice expresses the nuances of the contents, making it easy and enjoyable to listen to the book.

Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-01-16
    Publisher: Agora, New Internet Technologies
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Nonfiction, Philosophy
    Publisher's Summary:
Art is the creative manifestation of essences. In order to understand the relation between art and reality, we need a philosophical guide. The best way to comprehend how the creative act of imagining enables the mind to seek reality is to employ the kind of dialectical thinking that Plato used in his dialogues. Beginning with the shadows on the wall of the cave in which each person dwells, that process gradually enables us to grasp the essences that are manifested in individual works of art.
Without a philosophical guide, we are likely to encounter only a blur of images in the visual arts, a cacophony of sounds in music, a whirl of activity in the theater, and chaos in the building of cities. It is too much to expect a set of final answers to any serious question about what is true, good, or beautiful. If we abandon the quest for reality, we settle for too little. Plato's dialectical approach offers a path between Scylla and Charybdis.
