Questo dialogo, noto anche col nome di Simposio, è il più noto fra i dialoghi di Platone. La sua struttura non è in realtà quella di un dialogo ma una successione di orazioni effettuate dagli intellettuali ateniesi, che hanno per oggetto le lodi del dio dell'Amore (Eros). Troviamo qui, fra l'altro, la famosa descrizione dell'uomo ermafrodito, che, tagliato in due dagli dei, cercherà poi nella sua vita, la sua metà mancante, grazie alla quale, e solo grazie ad essa, ritroverà il suo senso di completezza e, quindi, la felicità. Ma, quando è il turno di Socrate di parlare, egli si limita a riferire l'insegnamento che Diotima gli ha somministrato, e che termina con queste parole: "Cosa succederebbe allora se uno riuscisse a vedere la Bellezza in sé, in tutta la sua adamantina purezza, e non già quella offuscata dalla carne, dai colori, da tutte le altre vanità terrene, se gli riuscisse, insomma, di scoprire la Bellezza in sé, divina e uniforme? Credi forse che sarebbe miserabile la vita di quell'uomo che fissasse quel punto, lassù, e lo contemplasse come va contemplato, congiunto con esso? Ed è soltanto in quel punto, contemplando la bellezza, con quella facoltà che la rende visibile, che egli potrà dar vita non a parvenze di virtù, dato che non è a una falsa immagine di bellezza che egli si è accostato, ma a una virtù vera, per il fatto che egli è nella verità; non pensi del resto, che avendo dato vita alla virtù vera e avendola continuamente alimentata, costui potrà diventare caro agli dei, ed essere anch'egli immortale, se mai altro uomo lo è stato?" Robert L. Humphrey was an Iwo Jima veteran, a Harvard graduate, and a cross-cultural conflict resolution specialist during the Cold War. He proposed the dual life value theory of human nature. From the experiences of childhood in the Great Depression, trips as a teenager in the Panamanian Merchant Marines, national-class boxing, the awe-inspiring sights of selfless sacrifice on Iwo Jima, and finally 15 years in overseas ideological warfare, Humphrey observed that universal values exist and ultimately control human behavior.

Humphrey is a graduate of Wisconsin University, Harvard Law School, and the Fletcher School of Diplomacy. At the beginning of the Cold War, he left a teaching position at MIT to help lead the struggle against Communism. Finding that US education was contributing to rather than reducing American overseas problems, he developed a new leadership approach that overcame "ugly American" syndrome among hundreds of thousands in crucial third world areas. More recently his methodology won commendations for educating the alleged uneducable: Mexican American street-gang youths in Southern California and Canadian native teenage dropouts.

Until Communism's fall, Humphrey kept his new methods confidential. Those methods are significant: (1) From his experiences with young infantrymen in heavy combat and with the peasants in many villages of the world, he perceived humankind's basic goodness that philosophers have missed or underrated. (2) In place of compartmentalized, primarily mental education, Humphrey has developed a human-nature-guided (moral, physical, artistic, mental) approach.

Robert is one of the mentors of Jack Hoban author of Ethical Warrior and for those that have not read this book and work in the world of developing leaders you should stop what you are doing and invest in its purchase and read the book from cover to cover, dog ear the pages, underline, whatever it takes to ingrain in your heart and mind what this book offers. It does not read as either a text book or a guide but is a masterful story which will give you countless story examples to explain its content and teach you how to better communicate with a lasting effect.

Timeless truths for everyone wanting to know how they can make a difference with others they care about

I had the privilege of working with Dr Humphrey 20 years ago and found his methods of helping at risk youth turn their lives around truly effective. In this book he tells his story of how he developed his "duel life values philosophy" to guide his work with the U.S. government in many countries around the world, which helped resolve serious problems caused by cultural differences. He then returned to apply his same philosophy here in the U.S. to helping kids learn to make different and better choices in their lives.
