Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
The Gospel of Thomas, unearthed in Nag Hammadi Egypt in 1945, remains one of the most exciting archeological finds of recent centuries. But how prepared are we to approach this text on its own terms? How accurately are we able to discover what it is saying, immersed as we are in 2000 years of Platonic and dualistic Christian orthodoxy? Thanks to the influx of Eastern knowledge and the new crop of Western teachers willing to reapproach their Christian tradition as the Eastern event that Jesus was, we may finally be able to see the meaning and philosophical structure of this ancient and truly remarkable text. The Gospel of Thomas delineates the Way of Yeshua, a spiritual path that guides us through six clear movements of searching, finding, trouble, wonder, reigning, and rest. The resonance with classic Yogic paths makes this document the bridge many searchers need to reconcile and fully embrace the wisdom of both the East and the West.
    Critic Reviews:
"I suspect you will find this book quite exciting, comforting, and also challenging!" (Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M. Center for Action and Contemplation Albuquerque, New Mexico)
"Using poetry, reason, sacred insight, and spiritual practice, Kim provides a pragmatic and engaging pathway into this Gospel." (Rev. Dr. Thomas Thresher Suquamish, United Church of Christ, WA)

can only contribute to a great understanding of the material
True wisdom teaching (and learning) takes some investments, both of time and patience. It requires stillness and contemplation. It necessitates openness and lack of judgement. Yeshua's Yoga approaches the Gospel of Thomas in a novel way by inviting us to approach it through a variety of mediums for each logion (saying attributed to Jesus)-poetry, written commentary, snippets of complementary eastern wisdom, suggestion for going deeper and a final summation. Many books on religion either require a confession of faith or an advanced degrees to understand. This book requires neither, which is part of why it works. On the other hand, having either one of those, as I do, can only contribute to a great understanding of the material.
The author takes you on a journey of exploration for each logion in such a way to invite your own wisdom to the table. It's like she holds up the logion as one would a beautiful jewel, and describes it from every possible angle. Each chapter is complete in and of itself and short enough that it makes a beautiful way to begin or end your day.The best compliment I can give any book is that I already purchased one as a present (much loved from all reports) and plan on giving it to two more people.
Maybe I'm a Christian after all....
I have recently become aware of the Gospel of Thomas and have read it a couple of times. It makes me consider that being a Christian might just be okay after all. The Gospel of Thomas can be difficult to understand tho and I have been wanted some help in interpreting the text--at least one persons idea, anyway. Kim's book is exactly what I was looking for. She has you read the actual Logion, followed by her initial thoughts on it--followed by a deeper consideration of what it might mean. Its clear that I can still interpret in the best way for me...these are just her thoughts on the text.

  • Modern Scholar: God Audiobook by Ilan Stavans

    Title: Modern Scholar: God
    Subtitle: A History
    Author: Ilan Stavans
    Narrator: IIan Stavans
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 4 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-14
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
In this sweeping history, Ilan Stavans, one of todays preeminent essayists, cultural critics, and translators, explores the way humans have evolved in their conception of the divine, from an animistic view defined by spirituality to Greek myths and the Aztec pantheon, onward to the development on monotheism as a powerful religion in the Middle East that was crystallized in the biblical narrative. He meditates on what type of divine presences coexist in the Hebrew Bible and how these entities take bifurcating paths in Christianity and Islam. He reflects on the difference between prophetic such as the Abrahamic type and wisdom religions such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism. In these eight fascinating lectures he also ponders the way philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, Maimonides, Averroes, Aquinas, Spinoza, and Nietzsche reflected on the role of God in the world. Stavans criticizes the legacy of monotheism as based on violence, analyzes theology from a strictly linguistic perspective, and ponders atheism as an alternative in a world such as ours defined by science and technology. Along the way, he explores his own ordeal - my wrestling, as he puts it - with his own personal God. God: A History will make the listener question preconceived ideas, seeing them in the larger narrative of human belief.

A light introduction to God and philosophy
    Any additional comments?
This book is a light introduction to a history of God, and perhaps philosophy. Alternative titles that would have been more fitting kept coming to mind for me. "A Brief Introduction to the Abrahamic God" or "God 101" were a few titles that I kept thinking of.
"God: A History," is a series of lectures that are mildly similar to, "The Evolution of God," by Robert Wright. For those unfamiliar with this excellent book, Wright makes the case that the Bible is is a reflection of man's thoughts about God. And because of this, what you see in the Bible as God changing over time is really the evolution of man's concept of God -- from polytheism to monotheism, from law to love -- over time.
The weakness of "God: A History," is also its strength, however. Whereas the audiobook to "The Evolution of God" came in at 18 hours and 29 minutes, "God: A History," comes in at a much more comfortable 4.5 hours. Of course, trying to learn all about God in 4.5 hours of your life is slightly laughable. But on the other hand, the lecture series did bring something to the table, and did so in a timely manner. That's not always a bad thing.
The lecture series is divided into 8 lectures:
    Introduction
    Polytheist and paganism
Hebrew Bible (and the god or gods thereof)
Legacy of monotheism in the Abrahamic religion
The wisdom religions. Prophetic vs. Wisdom traditions
    Debate of philosophers regarding God.
    God and Politics...
    Atheism
In my opinion, the best lecture was on the wisdom religions, followed by the lecture on atheism. Having the option of getting some deeper lectures on these subjects would be really nice.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-04-14
    Publisher: Nexgate Press
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 24 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
How does Jesus Christ fit in a UFO universe? The answer may surprise you. The answer may change you.
After following the History Channel's Ancient Alien program, I began researching the Bible and other ancient texts used by ancient astronaut theorists. Initially, I set out to prove that Jesus fit into their premise - that humans are descendants of an alien race - but that's not what I found. What I discovered blew my mind. I realized that there is far more information in the Bible about UFOs than I imagined... bright spheres zig zagging through the sky... fiery balls of light ascending and descending upon the Earth, and metallic craft watching over the planet... they're all in the Bible.
After studying the biblical and ancient texts ufologists use on the History Channel, I've concluded that Jesus Christ is the Admiral of the biggest UFO fleet man will ever see.
    Critic Reviews:
"You've done a great job writing this book for people who have faith and those without. Even for those of us who believe, to have it spelled out in context is great because it's hard to remember otherwise. And even for those who aren't 'Christians', it's not overly preachy in any way." (Beta Reader)
    Members Reviews:
Very well written in how it explained the subject.
This is the best explanation to date. It doesn't hurl accusations at those who have experienced abductions and does an excellent job of tying everything together.
    Great book
The content of the book was great but could've used a better narrator. I found myself drifting away from the story
    Good read
If you are into the alien/demon/angel scene, then this is for you. Very detailed explanation of differences between the three.
    Not what it's described as...
According to 'Alien', every ufo or alien encountered is actually an angel. This book is promoted as an objective comparison of religious encounters versus ancient alien theory, but is no more than a weak attempt to discredit AAT and ram Christianity down your throat (or in this case, ears).

    Change your life
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Finally, the Law of Attraction is explained properly. I have learned WHY it's not worked for me in the way I desired. Donna's writing style is easily understood and she has a gift for explaining by using stories.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the story of liver and onions...I don't want to spoil the book, but it was a brilliant way of simply explaining what could have been a complex issue.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I think I would have to say the liver and onion story again. It was very engaging!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to this book in one sitting, and I think that was helpful because you got the whole concept in one go. I think it will be useful to now go back and listen again in stages to make sure the messages are fully absorbed.
    Any additional comments?
If you've been wondering why the law of attraction isn't working for you in the way you want, or perhaps have never heard of it, but really want your life to be different then you must read or listen to this book. Donna really does explain what's going on and why, and more importantly what YOU can do to make it better. Best thing I've listened to. Empowering, powerful stuff.
    woah man!!
What did you love best about How to Be Happy and Live Free?
to learn that I have been creating my reality with my thoughts, and to learn that me and only me can change my reality, now that I am conscious and awakened, and that I shoould change myself and not others.
What was one of the most memorable moments of How to Be Happy and Live Free?
to learn that I am the force behind ALL of my life circumstances
Which character as performed by Michael A. Smith was your favorite?
    Donna
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
most of the book moved me...to learn that we create everything..law of attraction..that out beliefs came from our parents and their parents ....
    Any additional comments?
I love Donnas accent, so I wished she would have narrated this book..Michael did a great job though..

Title: Culture and the Death of God
    Author: Terry Eagleton
    Narrator: Paul Boehmer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-01-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
How to live in a supposedly faithless world threatened by religious fundamentalism? Terry Eagleton, formidable thinker and renowned cultural critic, investigates in this thought-provoking audiobook the contradictions, difficulties, and significance of the modern search for a replacement for God. Engaging with a phenomenally wide range of ideas, issues, and thinkers from the Enlightenment to today, Eagleton discusses the state of religion before and after 9/11, the ironies surrounding Western capitalisms part in spawning not only secularism but also fundamentalism, and the unsatisfactory surrogates for the Almighty invented in the post-Enlightenment era.
The author reflects on the unique capacities of religion, the possibilities of culture and art as modern paths to salvation, the so-called war on terrors impact on atheism, and a host of other topics of concern to those who envision a future in which just and compassionate communities thrive. Lucid, stylish, and entertaining in his usual manner, Eagleton presents a brilliant survey of modern thought that also serves as a timely, urgently needed intervention into our perilous political present.
    Members Reviews:
    Intelligently written and without Grace
Most Idealist thinkers were Pelagians. Didnt everyone already know that? If you didnt know it already, you might be lost with this book, because hes not going to explain what that means, but he just asserts it. I found that kind of writing incredibly refreshing, and I like an author who doesnt talk down to the reader (or in my case listener) and he always assumed the reader was interested in the topic under consideration and already has a familiarity with the topic under consideration. Not once, was I not on the edge of my seat as he was telling his story and connecting the dots for me. (I do most of my listening while riding a bicycle and I was literally on the edge of my seat, but I meant it metaphorically, of course).
The Enlightenment, the German Idealist and the Romantics are covered in detail, as are the masters of suspicion (Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud), and then the nature of culture and post-modernism. Every page was a delight, and I probably disagreed with something he was saying on every other page. He was right when he said Hegel oversaw the completion of history in his own mind, but everything else he said about Hegel and his Phenomenology of Spirit I took with a jaundice eye. And his statement that Schopenhauer remained a full-blooded metaphysician, a nightmarish version of the Hegel he envied so deeply beggars belief for me. Perhaps, that is true, but Ive never seen a footnote more cutting towards someone then Schopenhauer had towards Hegel in his Will and Representation, and one cant help notice the different world views of each. Yes, they both claim kinship with Kant. In particular, Schopenhauer says that directly in Will as Representation, but Hegel uses Kant only to go elsewhere and uses him as launching pad.
Im nitpicking. I just love the way this guy wrote. He was not afraid of dropping names or concepts or educating his reader. I dont think its possible to find a more concise review of the period under consideration then this survey and it was all tied together by his narrative: religion always needs to be with us and culture acts as its surrogate. As hes telling his story he gets at why Kierkegaard and Nietzsche really matter.
