Throw the baby out with the bath water.

If you can get passed the grating, condescending tone and strange pronunciation of some words by the narrator, there's information on international adoption here that's worth thinking about. I wanted to love the book but often came away exhausted by the constant Christian-bashing and heavy onslaught of anyone considering adoption. You're left with the impression that adoption is almost never a good option. Tell that to my son who's biological parents chose Meth over him.

It's hard to believe that so much can be written about silence in a book. This is without a doubt the best one out there. It's very comprehensive and will motivate you to bring silence into your life.

SILENCE

Anyone who is seeking to grow in their spiritual life can find guidance in this book. The very tool needed to go deep within is easily accessible to all. SILENCE. The journey can lead us from the chaotic mire of our own self-delusion and leave us stripped naked of our egos to stand before God and others in true humility. We LEARN to abandon the false self with it's egoic center and begin to embrace our true selves.

A Powerful, Thought-Provoking Book

It seems that a lot of junk being sold these days garners dozens, sometimes hundreds, of reviews on this site. It is a shame that a book of this quality has, to date, received only two reviews (mine being the third).

This is a powerful work - well-written, well-researched, incredibly authentic from start to finish.

The author's goal is to encourage readers to find ways to incorporate periods of silence into their lives by explaining that many benefits that can be accrued, and supporting these claims with dozens of examples of people from different walks of life, and in different parts of the world, who engage in silence as part of their lives.

Definitely worth the time to read - and ponder.

One of the best books I have ever read, and I have read thousands in my almost two-thirds of a century of living.

Fascinating exploration of the concept of silence

I was enticed into reading this book after listening to Graham Turner talk about it on Radio 4. He talked about his own experience as a young man in which he was asked by en evangelical Christian friend of his (with whom he was stationed in Singapore on national service in the 1950s - and did not appear to like very much) to try experiencing total silence for a short period. Although he was agnostic, Turner took up the challenge and allowed any random thought to come into his mind. The experience surprised him because he found that long suppressed thoughts and feelings came to mind.

It isn't about trying to attain anything, rather it is about losing false views and perceptions. To remove all that the ego so desires to cling to. The path to enlightenment is the realization that there is nothing to find, nowhere to go, nothing to achieve. There is no need to search for God for God has been within you always. God, itself is your true self, your true being. It is nothing more than waking up from the dream. "Upon returning home on a cold winter night, I begin my evening by building a fire in the fireplace to chase away the chill. Once I have gathered the logs and placed them so, I start the fire. At the birth of the flames starting to flicker among the logs, it is in that moment I know that I am releasing all the memories that have been stored up in that tree. I know that I am releasing the sunshine that gave warmth to that tree, that tree from whence the firewood came.

I know that I am releasing the clouds that gave it shade, the rains that quench its thirst, the soil from which it received its nourishment, and all those enjoyments that the tree experienced so joyfully, like those memories of the autumn breeze caressing its leaves and the still of the moonlight on a winter night while that tree stood stoic in deep contemplation. And in the knowing of giving shelter in the spring and being a refuge to the song birds and the animals that called it home. Yes, while I witness the flickering of those flames, I see all of this and more, for the log in the fire is more than what it seems. It is at once an explosion of all its life's experiences and joys, and a reminder of what we leave behind, for this log has shown me, how even I, am connected to it all."

Honestly, I didn't love the narration. The book could have used more vigorous editing and rearrangement. That being said, the essential narrative is luminous.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Keeping Faith?

There is an epiphany of the role of ritual and the physical in the growth of the emotional and spiritual.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The female voice (narrator) for a character who is so importantly finding his identity as it does or does not relate to his sexually is frequently confusing.

This was a book I will probably listen to several times. There was so much in there from biography to history to dogma to philosophy all woven into what felt like a great conversation with someone who bared their soul to me. "Wow" is all I can say.
