Wonderful!

I looked at the title of this book and was hesitant. I gave it a try by listening to the sample and was hooked. Now my kids are listening to it and really enjoying the story. Every time we are in the car and get home - they don't want to leave the car because they are listening to the story. Quite a bit heavy on the swearing - but my kids pointed out - she is not really saying them since it is a book and it was only written down.

I love this book!

I can listen to this book over and over, it is one of my favorite books!

I couldn't wait until this was over....I suppose if you are a teenager, this story may be of interest, but if not, don't waste your time.

Do NOT buy this audiobook. Read this work, and the other strong followup novels in the series, especially "Super Human."

Jazmin's Notebook

Covering the course of a year for Jazmin, this book is full of vignettes which capture her life as a fourteen-year-old in Harlem in the 60's. As always, Grimes is a masterful image maker and the poetry that is sprinkled throughout this book is lovely. I would have liked to see more of a plot in this book, but found it to be an enjoyable read. The book is shorter than most YA books, so might be good for reluctant readers between 12-16.

Jazmin's Notebook

Two of the major literary elements in this book are the point of view and the setting. The point of view of this book is first person. The book is actually Jazmin's journal, so the entire novel is told through Jazmin's perspective. Through the eyes of this 14-year-old girl the reader sees what Harlem in the 1960's was like. In reading this book it is as if the reader is actually picking up someone's journal and taking a peek. Jazmin is young and still exploring her world. She does not have the hard bitterness that could be seen if an older person was writing this book, nor does is have the obliviousness that could be seen if a child was writing it. Jazmin's personality is portrayed through her journal, and the point of view of this story allows for the soul searching and revelations that only a journal could provide. Another major literary element of this book is the setting. The setting is told through Jazmin's commentary in her notebook. This commentary gives the reader a clear picture of what Harlem was like in the 1960's, or at least what it might have been like. Jazmin's descriptions of her surroundings are both matter-of-fact and accepting. The following description of a nearby bar gives the reader vivid mental imagery of what it is really like. "The bar & grill blasts rhythm and blues on the jukebox all hours of the night, while cocaine changes hands in dark corners, and pool-sharks in the back room beat amateurs out of a week's pay." page 6. The setting is developed throughout the book by descriptions like this and casual comments, until the reader is able to picture the tenement houses with their paper-thin walls and the rats that can sometimes be found creeping from openings in the floor and walls. The time is not developed as well as the place, but it is apparent in some places such as the drugs that are prevalent in some scenes and the clothing that is described.

Hard to get through

Bought this for my daughter as it was required summer reading. She had to push hard to get through it, and she read me a few chapters so I could understand why it was so laborious. Just not our kind of book I guess - the story line and characters failed to capture, and the author's style didn't resonate.

It was a ok book, telling the story of a young? apprentince coinsmyth. What I didn't like is no refrence to year, time of year or even what year. when he is first taken to the knight's household, and runs away, and captured, it seams like the following about him fixing the pots and such and becoming used to being there, takes days atleast if not weeks or longer, but is then called to see the Kinght, and you learn it was the same day. You don't even know how long they were at sea to the crusades. otherwize a good book about the not so nice life of the crusaders

Surprising and fun

I expected a book about a girl living in a big magical house with magical servants, wandering through charmed rooms - but the story is much more complicated, interesting and unique than that. The story has dark streaks (alcoholic/neglectful parents, addiction and hunger)embedded in a lush story that frequently brought forth the idea of jungle for me. There is, of course, magic of the conventional, spell-casting kind, but the story itself is a sort of magic. The only reason this gets 4 instead of 5 stars is that it all ties together a bit tidily for me - but it is, after all, a children's book.

Banished Blue Butlers and Other Oddities

When your house has 11,000 rooms it seems utterly unfair that you are sleeping in a broom closet. Even a very nice, cozy broom closet. However, with the butler banished Flora's house is not in the best of shape. The potty disappears sometimes, the front door won't open, and the elevator once kidnapped her father for a week. Nevertheless, when she is running late to return a library book she dares the elevator. The elevator kidnapps her too and takes her to the library where she meets the banished butler. Before she knows it she is forging signatures, planning daring rescues, and sneaking into abandoned houses to steal words of power. She has a limited amount of time to rescue herself and her butler all before her mother gets home. And in the middle of all of this she has to get a dress made and invitations sent out for her birtday party!

I really really wish the second installment, Flora's Dare, had been put out on audio!

Whimsy with soul

It's a fantasy YA novel different from any other I've read.

Despite its delightful whimsy, it deals with some very harsh issues.

Flora Secunda is the daughter of a great general (her mother )who is a workaholic and absent most of the time, and a war hero (her father) so debilitated by his prisoner of war internment he has retreated into drinking and madness. The last of a crumbling, great lineage and certainly not the best, 14 year old Flora has been left trying to maintain the family and take on the responsibilities of the adults who aren't there for her.

Obviously, she gets into trouble. And what wonderful trouble it is. Flora has ideas of her own about what she wants for her life.

I bought this to listen in the car with my age 12 and 15 boys. The frank talk about oral sex and sex in general was surprising to me.

I guess it didn't hurt them, but rate this one R. It's not PG-13.

YA lit for Adults, too

I checked out King Dork to see if it might be something my teenage son might like, and ended up loving it myself. The bumbling teenager that I was long ago was suddenly present front and center, radar out for slights and bullies, longing for validation, convinced that life has no meaning outside of friends and music, and desperate for sexual experience of any kind. Took me right back there, and helped me remember that being a teenager is still the hardest time of life. It's amazing that any of us survive. Frank Portman has told a story that will resonate with teenagers, and with anybody who has ever been a teenager.

a gem of a novel

What an absolute delight this audio book is! I don't give out five stars lightly, but this work deserves it. I'm well into middle age, but King Dork made me feel like a teenager again. A wonderful smart protagonist brought to life by the perfect reader. You'll be in stitches. An added plus to the audio version is a short interview with the author, who also performs a few songs he wrote for King Dork. All in all, a gem.

It's not just for teens

In fact, it's really more for adults or anyone who thought high school was a farce. If you liked the TV show, "Freaks and Geeks," this book is for you. A smart, hilarious story that will have you laughing and reminiscing. The author defintely did his research of 1970s music, which added to my enjoyment of the story. I am so glad I listened to this one! Note to parents: if you're liberal and open with your teens, this book is great for them. If teen sex references aren't your thing, don't share it with your kids.

A Hit for Any Age

I couldn't love this book more! I am an adult but when I read the description of this book I thought, "why not?" I was so glad I did!

You can't help but fall in love with the main character: his trials and mishaps that shuttle you back to the that age and his obervations that make you want to giggle behind your hand.

The narrarator captured the attitude and personality of the character and the feel of the book perfectly.

This is definately a repeat listen.

A low in the series, but still well worth the time

I think the trouble with this book is the huge leap of faith we need to take in order to accept that any adult would ask children (or even untrained adult civilians) to go into such a heavily contested military zone. I had trouble swallowing this, and so the rest of the book also felt a little more "make believe" than the previous books had.

Even with that aside, however, I didn't find this book as compelling as the first three. I have purchased the next in the series, but feel a bit wary. It is difficult to put my finger on the problem exactly (it is still a good listen), but this installment felt a little forced. I got the impression that there were meant to be only 3 in the series, but the publishers made such a great offer Marsden dusted the characters off for number 4.

I have marked the narrator lower on this recording than the first 3 - this is simply because she has so much trouble with the New Zealand accents! She does a fabulous job otherwise and captures the personalities of the main characters well.

Awesome book, amazing series, highly recommend!

I own the paperbacks too and have read them many times but still I bought the audio books because I can listen while I'm at work (I clean houses). Love these books!
